The 10 most unforgettable commercials from this year's Super Bowl
- We compiled a list of the 10 most unforgettable ads that aired during this year's Super Bowl.
- The list includes spots from Amazon, Robinhood, General Motors, and State Farm Insurance.
- Several companies abstained from airing a Super Bowl ad, while others debuted one for the first time.
Many Super Bowl viewers look forward to watching the commercials and this year was no different.
However, Super Bowl LV's lineup of ads may have looked a bit different from years past. Regular advertisers such as Budweiser, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Audi all opted to not air a commercial during the big game. Despite these absent brands, several companies made their Super Bowl advertising debuts, including DoorDash, Oatly, and Huggies.
COVID-19 may have changed some aspects of this year's Super Bowl, but the price to show an ad during the game was still high: Companies paid about $5.6 million for a 30-second ad on CBS during the Super Bowl.
The following ten ads were the most memorable.
Oatly
Vegan milk brand Oatly's Super Bowl commercial featured its CEO Toni Petersson singing a jingle about the brand.
"It's like milk, but made for humans," Petersson sang in the ad. "Wow, no cow."
Shortly after the advertisement aired, Twitter users started posting their scathing reviews of the 30-second clip, prompting the oat milk maker to trend on Twitter. Oatly then debuted a limited edition t-shirt that read, "I totally hated that Oatly commercial," under a graphic of Petersson.
This isn't the first time the ad has been played on TV. The commercial originally debuted in Sweden in 2014, according to a report from AdAge, However, it was pulled off the air after the country's dairy lobby sued the company.
General Motors
Norway has the most electric vehicles per capita of any country, including the US. General Motors took a stab at this statistic with the help of stars Will Ferrell, Kenan Thompson, and Awkwafina by announcing its plan to create 30 new electric vehicles by 2025.
Amazon
Amazon released its Alexa commercial ahead of the Super Bowl and it instantly became a viral hit. The ad features Michael B. Jordan, who was named People magazine's 'sexiest man alive' last year, completing tasks as a human version of Alexa with glowing blue eyes.
Cadillac
Edward Scissorhands fans will be delighted to see this year's Cadillac's Super Bowl commercial. The ad featured Timothée Chalamet as Edgar Scissorhands, Edward's son, and Winona Ryder, a star from the original film. In the minute-long spot, Chalamet's character struggles to complete basic functions, but is able to drive the Cadillac Lyriq with the vehicle's hands-free driving function.
Tide
Tide's Super Bowl ad featured a Seinfeld surprise: Jason Alexander as a hoodie. The commercial depicts the hoodie being dirtied up by its owner as it becomes a tug-of-war toy and a seat cushion.
Robinhood
Robinhood's ad may not have been especially outstanding, but given the company's recent controversy amid the GameStop and Reddit saga, the ad's "we are all investors" message may have resonated with viewers.
Cheetos
Cheetos' Super Bowl commercial promoted its Crunch Pop Mix. In the ad, Ashton Kutcher catches Mila Kunis stealing his bag of Cheetos. Shaggy then tells Kunis to tell Kutcher, "it wasn't you."
This reference to Shaggy's 2000 hit "It Wasn't Me" continues on for the remainder of the commercial as Kutcher repeatedly catches Kunis in various locations eating his bag of Cheetos.
Toyota
Toyota didn't promote a specific vehicle in this year's Super Bowl commercial, but it did take the time to highlight Jessica Long, a 13-time Paralympic gold medalist and adopted double amputee.
"We are grateful to Jessica and her family for their willingness to allow us to share such a personal part of their story," Lisa Materazzo, Toyota Marketing's group vice president said in a statement.
State Farm Insurance
Super Bowl commercials are known for celebrity cameos and State Farm's ad did not disappoint. The 30-second bit featured quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, actor Paul Rudd, and Drake as the State Farm spokesperson's stand-in, khakis included.
Anheuser-Busch
Budweiser announced it wouldn't be airing a commercial during this year's big game, but that didn't stop its parent company, Anheuser-Busch, from debuting its first Super Bowl ad. The commercial showed people in varying locations doing different things over Anheuser-Busch beverages. Drinks like Bud Light, Budweiser, and Michelob Ultra all made an appearance in the ad.
According to the commercial, "it's never just about the beer. It's about the being together."
