The One is the first Sonos speaker I've used, but I'm thoroughly impressed. It has understated but beautiful looks, and it delivers truly excellent audio quality. Using Alexa on it to control music with just my voice was a genuinely great experience.
Indeed, I'm actually considering replacing my big, expensive, clunky, cable-ridden hi-fi system with the One. If your dwelling isn't full of speakers already, you should certainly consider the One for single or multi-room music playback.
If you already have a set of "dumb" speakers that can't be directly controlled with a voice assistant, you have a harder choice to make. Going with the One means essentially buying new speakers. Of course, if your old "dumb" speakers don't sound very good, the One could be a great upgrade, thanks to its access to Alexa and its sound quality.
And the One will soon become more appealing, thanks to its upcoming support for Google Assistant and Apple's AirPlay 2 technology.
For me, the fact that the One didn't support some Alexa features wasn't a deal breaker. But if you're an Alexa enthusiast, you might want to consider Amazon's new Echo devices instead, since they offer similar features as the One but offer the full Alexa experience.
It's not exactly clear how those smart speakers stack up next to the One, because we haven't tested them yet. Likewise Apple's HomePod, which won't be released until December.
