Get rid of stagnant water
Don’t
let water stagnate in or around your house. Water standing in puddles, coolers,
pots or vessels can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes and may cause deadly
diseases like malaria and dengue.

Check the roof and the walls for leaks
Do a thorough inspection of the walls and the roof for any kind of leakage and seepage. Get the cracks filled with white cement while the pores can be filled with wall putty.

Keep a tab on drainage system
Call the plumber to check the drains. Make sure they are
clean and thoroughly checked for clogging and leakage. Replace rusted and
broken drain pipes. Don’t leave out the rainwater pipes or balcony and terrace
drainage.

Check electrical fittings
Let the
electrician do a thorough checking of the electrical connections. Faulty wiring
and damaged connections should be replaced immediately. Electrical switches and
plug points that are exposed to rain need to be covered to avoid rain water
from seeping in. Be careful about the extension cords and multi-plug sockets
during the monsoon as these can lead to short circuit due to overloading.

Pay heed to ventilation
Ensure
adequate cross-ventilation and let the fresh air come inside the house during
the humid monsoon season. Lack of it can lead to dampness.

Keep your rugs & carpets safe
Roll up
your expensive carpets and rugs and keep them safely wrapped in plastic sheets.
Otherwise, monsoon dampness can ruin them. In case you want to use them, vacuum
them regularly to remove the dirt and moisture that can cause result into bacteria,
fungus and stink. Using bamboo mats and moisture-resistant acrylic carpets will
be better options.

Damp-proof wooden cupboards/drawers
The moisture from rain water can also reach your wooden cupboards, causing damage to the clothes and other stuff inside. Don’t forget to keep camphor balls and neem leaves between the folds to keep your clothes safe from silver fish and mould. A few cloves sprinkled between the clothes can also keep insects at bay. Put your expensive clothes in a metal closet to keep them safe.

Clean your leather sofas
Your shiny and comfy leather sofa can turn into a moist and smelling lump infested with mould, if you don’t clean it regularly.

Clean the house, so that it smells good
This is
both the easiest and the toughest task during the rainy season. It’s easy
because all you need to do is clean your home regularly using anti-bacterial
cleaners and extensively using things like potpourri, fresh flowers, room
fresheners and scented candles. And it is tough because continuous rain and
dampness keep playing spoil sport.

Deck Up Your Home
Replace those dark curtains with sheer ones that
bring in light. Add vibrant colours to the interiors with floral cushions and
bed sheets in shades of yellow, blue and green.
