YouTube follows Apple's lead and removes the Alex Jones and Infowars channels from its platform
On Monday, YouTube became the latest platform to boot the content of controversial far-right commentator Alex Jones from its site, hours after Apple first took steps to remove the majority of Jones' podcasts, citing its hate speech guidelines.
Now, if you try to visit The Alex Jones channel on YouTube, you'll be greeted by a note that reads: "This account has been terminated for violating YouTube's Community Guidelines."
The Infowars channel, which is also operated by Jones, has also been taken offline, and now brings up a page citing the same violation of YouTube's policy.
YouTube's spokespeople had not responded to questions from Business Insider. Jones was not immediately available for comment. The move by YouTube, the second most-visited site on the web, followed a wide crackdown on Jones by some of the other most popular platforms on the web, including Facebook, Spotify and Apple.
Jones is a conspiracy theorist who has been found to have spread erroneous information in the past. He claimed that the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting, in which 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 children as well as six adults, was a hoax. The parents of the dead children blame Jones for encouraging people to harass them.
Apple took removed much of InfoWars podcasts while Facebook removed some of Jones pages..
"Apple does not tolerate hate speech, and we have clear guidelines that creators and developers must follow to ensure we provide a safe environment for all of our users," Apple said in a statement on Monday.
