The retail chain filed for bankruptcy on Feb. 5 and has been closing hundreds of stores over the last couple of weeks. At least 1,784 stores close by March 31.
Bank lenders and other secured creditors are among the first to get paid when a retailer goes bankrupt.
Customers, on the other hand, have fewer protections, Bloomberg's Lauren Coleman-Lochner writes.
So if a gift card goes unused by the time RadioShack goes out of business, it's unlikely the lost balance will be repaid.
