Days after the Modi government launched its Digital India program which connects with the masses through the Aadhaar card, now the government has asked the Supreme Court to set up a constitution bench to decide the validity of Aadhaar scheme.

As reported by Economic Times, the Central government has informed the apex court that it cannot roll back Aadhaar scheme as it has gone all the way and covered 80 crore population out of total 120 crore. Reports also mention that the government so far has spent Rs 5,000 crore on the scheme.

The top court, however, alleged violation of its interim order and raised concern over government authorities making Aadhaar mandatory for welfare and subsidy schemes.

Issued on behalf of the Indian government, Aadhaar is a 12 digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) which serves as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India.
