White House says Gary Cohn isn't going anywhere - for now
- Gary Cohn has long been reported to be eyeing an exit from the Trump administration after tax reform.
- With the GOP package now law, speculation has increased that Cohn will leave the White House soon.
- Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday that Cohn "has stated that he is committed to being here."
Gary Cohn isn't going anywhere yet, the White House said Thursday.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, asked during the daily press briefing about his job status, as the National Economic Council director, batted down a suggestion that Cohn would depart imminently.
"I have no reason to know of any personnel change whatsoever. Gary has stated that he is committed to being here," Sanders told reporters.
The questions come amid renewed interest in Cohn's possible departure. Reports over the past year indicated that the former Goldman Sachs COO has been close to leaving the Trump administration before, especially in the wake of Cohn's public admonishment of the president's response to racial violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Multiple reports also suggested that Cohn was simply waiting to complete the tax reform package before quitting. Sanders said the tax law's passage was a win for the White House and Cohn to build off going into the new year.
"We've just come off of a very successful win on the tax cut and reform package, which Gary was one of the key leaders of that effort, and we're moving full force ahead into 2018 to make sure we get a lot accomplished," Sanders said.
