Voter turnout declines in the third and largest phase of the Indian election

• The voter turnout in the third phase of the Indian election fell to 64.33%.
• In the past two phases of the Indian general election, the voter turnout had maintained itself at nearly 70%.

The third and the largest phase of the India’s Parliamentary election saw the voter turnout dip to 64.33% from nearly 70% during the first two phases.

The voter count midway through the current election would compare to the 66.4% clocked in 2014, which, at the time, the highest ever voter turnout for India.


Malfunctions with electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) and streaks of violence continue to rage on and affect polling.

The north eastern state of Assam saw the highest voter turnout during the third phase of the election 2019 with 80% voter turnout, while West Bengal and Tripura were close runner ups with 79% voter turnout.

Jammu and Kashmir was at the opposite end of the spectrum with a mere 13% of voters showing up to cast their ballot.

Four of the key states that were up to poll — Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal — reported violence breaking out in at least one constituency.

In the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers were trying to beat up a member of the National Congress Party for raising a black blag to one of BJP’s candidates in video published by ANI.

Today's polls concluded the voting for 22 states completely.
