The Alexandria, Virginia Detention Center has publicly released a mugshot of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort after he was booked into the facility a little after midnight on Thursday.

US District Court Judge T.S. Ellis ordered Manafort's move to the Alexandria facility from the Northern Neck jail in rural Virginia, where he has been held since June 15 after his bail was revoked due to allegations of witness tampering brought by the special counsel Robert Mueller's office.

The special counsel's office is prosecuting Manafort in two separate criminal trials - one in Virginia scheduled for July 25, and another in Washington, DC, set for mid-September. Manafort faces over 20 criminal charges on offenses including bank fraud, tax fraud, obstruction of justice, and lying to investigators.

The transfer was ordered after Manafort's attorneys complained that being held in a jail so far away from Alexandria, the location of the July 25 trial, was impeding his ability to prepare for the trial. But when Manafort's transfer was ordered, his lawyers protested, citing the logistical complications and stress of moving to a new facility.

According to a Wednesday court filing from Mueller's office, Manafort boasted of receiving the "VIP" treatment at Northern Neck, which included his own private living space, bathroom, workspace, and phone, as well as not having to wear a prison uniform.

It's not clear yet whether or not Manafort will get the same perks in the new facility, but Ellis assured Manafort's legal team that the staff at the Alexandria Detention Center was "very familiar with housing high-profile defendants including foreign and domestic terrorists, spies and traitors."
