  • An Australian professor said that he’d “leave the room crying,” if he had to appear for the exam, after reviewing India’s JEE question paper.
  • The video has gone viral on social media platforms, extracting nearly 400,000 views on YouTube.
  • YouTuber ‘Tibees’ featured six Australian professors in the video to review the paper.
An Australian professor has reacted to the question paper of India’s Joint Entrance Examination(JEE) saying that he’d “leave the room crying,” if he had to appear for the exam back in 12th grade. Since then, the video has gone viral on social media platforms, with nearly 400,000 views.

Flipping through the question paper, professor Dr James Hutchison reviewed it as ‘intimidating.’ A perplexed mathematics professor Barry Hughes said that it would be challenging for him to crack the exam in the stipulated time.

In fact, some professors who reviewed the questions meant for high school students in India, said that these topics are taught at university level in Australia. YouTuber ‘Tibees’ featured six Australian professors in the video to review the paper.

The entrance examination is taken by the students to get admission in India’s premier engineering institutions such as Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and National Institute of Technology (NITs). The paper is aimed at testing students’ knowledge in subjects like Maths, Chemistry and Physics.

The video raised concerns over the assessment criteria of the Indian universities to enroll students — calling it a ‘race-against-clock style examination’. The professors found that the pattern of the question paper had several questions that tested the memorising capabilities of students, which may underestimate the potential of aspiring students.

This also brings in the challenge faced by students who are somehow unable to take up coaching for such competitive exams.

The IITs have been trying to make learning fun for students by turning the syllabus relatable to their daily life.

IIT Madras, in its recent end-semester examination, the test for Material and Energy Balances (MEB) asked its students “What should Dhoni do if he wins the toss?” and whether M S Dhoni should be batting or fielding in his next match during the Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
