Earlier known as Uttaranchal, this northern state of India is one of the most popular pilgrim hubs of the world. Carved out from the state of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand is the 27 th state of the Indian Republic. The total geographical extent of Uttarakhand is 53,483 square kilometers which is covered to a major extent by mountains and forests. The total number of eligible voters in Uttarakhand as per the electoral rolls is 77,17,126. This figure is made of 40,71,363 males, 36,45,533 females and 230 third gender voters.

In 2014 general elections for the Parliament, the state of Uttarakhand elected BJP from all its 5 seats. The results in 2009 elections saw the state giving all its 5 seats to the Congress party. In 2004 general elections, BJP got 3 seats, SP got 1 seat and INC got 1 constituency from Uttarakhand.

The total number of Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttarakhand is 5. Among them, 1 is reserved for scheduled castes. The state can send 3 members to represent it in the Rajya Sabha. Uttarakhand has a total number of 71 assembly constituencies and the latest assembly elections in the state were held in March 2017. The state of Uttarakhand went for polling for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in a single phase on April 11 when the country voted during the first round of polling.
