Earlier known as Uttaranchal, this northern state of India is one of the most popular pilgrim hubs of the world. Carved out from the state of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand is the 27 th state of the Indian Republic. The total geographical extent of Uttarakhand is 53,483 square kilometers which is covered to a major extent by mountains and forests.
