Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) marked the end of 2015 with a stark reminder of the trail of deaths left by gun violecne in the US.

On Thursday, the senator sent out a seemingly endless series of tweets detailing "every injury and every death in every mass shooting this year."

"Seeing all these shootings together you can't help but wonder, how is it possible that we can see this carnage and continue to do nothing?" he wrote.

Murphy has been one of the most outspoken proponents for gun-control legislation since 2012 following the infamous shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which left 27 people dead including 20 children.

As the New York Times noted, Murphy dedicated one of his first speeches on the Senate floor to the gun violence, telling the story of one of the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. Murphy has also criticized his congressional peers for saying that their "thoughts and prayers" are with victims of mass shootings, while refusing to pass significant gun control legislation.

Murphy wrote that he was using the Gun Violence Archive to document the mass shootings. The website defines a mass shooting as four or more people shot in a single incident at the same general time, not including the shooter.
