Upcoming foldable smartphones in India - most of them cost over ₹1 lakh
Tech3 min read
As smartphones are getting more ubiquitous, handset makers have hit upon an idea to fit bigger screens into sleeker phones. The result is foldable phones which are the next generation of new-age phones that came after touch phones. Many such handsets have been launched across brands in the last few months.

As it is a new technology and still in its early stages, foldable phones are currently exorbitantly priced and available in limited numbers. In spite of that Samsung and Huawei have reported that the sales of their foldable devices have been “good”.

India, which is a price sensitive market, has fewer such models. Samsung Galaxy Fold is the only foldable phone available in India and even this device was launched with little stock. At present, the device is out of stock and Samsung has added a ‘Notify Me’ button on the Galaxy Fold listing.

Samsung Galaxy Fold - India’s first foldable phone

The Samsung Galaxy Fold features a 7.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex Display with a 4.2:3 aspect ratio which folds into a compact device with 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED cover display with 21:9 aspect ratio.

The device is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset and features 12GB RAM and 512GB of internal storage. It is priced at ₹1,64,999 in India and is available in Cosmos Black and Space Silver colour options.

Fans of the next generation model however will soon have more options to choose from.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip - With a clamshell design

After the success of the Galaxy Fold, Samsung is scheduled to reveal the Galaxy Z Flip at its Galaxy Unpacked event. The device has been leaked in a video and is expected to be priced around $1400 (₹99,770 approx.).

The device features a clamshell design and is expected to be similar to the Motorola Razr. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip does not offer a bigger display than traditional phones. Instead, it intends to offer a smartphone that can be folded when it is not being used, thereby taking less space.

We should know more about the Galaxy Z Flip and its Indian availability after the Galaxy Unpacked event later today.

Motorola Razr - The iconic phone revived

Last year Motorola announced that it is reviving its iconic Razr smartphone and launched it as a foldable smartphone with a modern design. The device features a 6.2-inch pOLED display on the inside with a 21:9 aspect ratio.

On the outside, it has a smaller 2.7-inch AMOLED display that allows you to take selfies, control music playback, check and respond to notifications and more without having to open the phone. It is powered by the Snapdragon 710 chipset and features 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage.

While Motorola has not announced then the Razr will be launched in India, the company has a dedicated page for the device on its website where users can register to get updated about the device.

Microsoft Surface Duo - Microsoft’s first Android phone

Last year, Microsoft announced that the Surface Duo will be the first Android smartphone from the company. What’s more is that the device will feature two screens with a hinge in between. Unlike other foldable smartphones, the Microsoft Duo uses two displays and a hinge in between with the screens folding inwards.

The Surface Duo will feature two 5.6-inch screens. When unfolded, the Surface Duo’s measures 8.6-inch. Users can choose to either use two apps at once or extend one app to both the screens.

The Surface Duo is expected to be available in the second half of 2020. At the moment, there is no information about when it will debut in India.
