Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Startup India, Standup India’ saw its big moment as one of the most successful CEOs in the world, Uber’s Travis Kalanick took to the stage to tell one and all present about the ‘Geek’s Guide to becoming an entrepreneur’.
“India is just not adventurous about building its own cities but it’s going global with its innovations. It’s so exciting that we will watch out closely what happens next,” he said.
Here is this geek’s guide for entrepreneurs, check it out!
LOOK FOR HARD PROBLEMS
If you are a geek, you will always look for a hard problem. At Uber, I call myself problem solver in-chief. As an entrepreneur, you always want problems to solve. Personally, I want as many hard ones as I can get!
BEING ANALYTICAL IS FINE, BUT BEING CREATIVE IS IMPERATIVE
You work creates magic when you cross analytics and use creativity. It can be a real gamechanger.
CAPTURE PEOPLES’ IMAGINATION
When you do something that is beyond the human imagination, you are likely to have people inspired. A successful entrepreneur should know his ways of capturing peoples’ imaginations, not by getting inside one’s brain, that’s not possible but by the insight into people and their behaviours.
PERCEPTION V/S REALITY
Great entrepreneur is the one who thinks different from everyone else. You need to go to places and time that no one else can think of. What you are doing cant be breakthrough or gamechanger until what you are thinking is completely different from the crowd.
For example, if you think a certain decision has a lot of risk involved and everyone thinks the opposite, you are the one to be winning by staying away from it. At the same time, if it’s something not risky, you are the one to take the plunge before anyone else could even think about it.
MAKE MAGIC
At Uber, I say bring people joy, make their lives comfortable, give them some money or help them save money!
SELLING AND STORYTELLING
As they say, fear is the disease and hustle is the antidote. Recently this morning, I learnt hustle is called jugaad in Hindi. So, #Alwaysbejugaading! If you make something magical and you are not selling it and storytelling, there is literally no use of your innovation. Remember, there are always right ways to sell you work. Follow honesty, passion and storytelling in elevating your work to bigger and meaningful things. You can inspire people!
ENTREPRENEURS SEEK ADVENTURE
Doing the impossible is what a great entrepreneur is all about. The three crazy places I say are : The Bay area, Bejing and Bangalore. The craziest ideas come by the in the craziest of places. Think out of the box, travel and keep going.
Put everything you got on the field. You will get knocked down and will face adversities. Get back up and enjoy the ride because that’s the only way you can keep getting back up. It will be impossible to fail.
