  • President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he thinks his daughter Ivanka Trump "would be dynamite" as US ambassador to the UN.
  • But the president also said if he nominated Ivanka he'd be accused of nepotism.
  • His remarks came just hours after it was announced US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley is resigning.
  • On Tuesday morning Trump said he'd announce Haley's replacement in the next two to three weeks.

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he thinks his daughter Ivanka Trump "would be dynamite" as US ambassador to the UN, but said he'd be accused of nepotism if he nominated her.

"I'm not sure there's anyone more competent in the world," Trump said of his daughter.

His comments came just hours after it was announced US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley is resigning from her position and will be leaving the Trump administration at the end of the year.

While speaking with reporters alongside Haley at the White House on Tuesday morning, Trump said he'd announce her replacement within the next two to three weeks. Almost immediately, some began to speculate he'd replace Haley with his daughter, who's been active in his administration from the start.

The first daughter and her husband, Jared Kushner, both serve as advisers to the president. Their presence in the Trump administration has been controversial and they've already faced accusations of nepotism.

Prior to joining her father in the White House, Ivanka had no political experience. And the president and Ivanka faced significant backlash after she sat among world leaders at a G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, last year.

The president on Tuesday also said he'd consider Dina Powell, who previously served as Trump's deputy national security adviser for strategy before resigning late last year

Many conservatives are also pushing for Trump to tap Ric Grenell, the current US Ambassador to Germany, as Haley's replacement.

As Trump announced Haley's departure, he lavished her with praise. The president said Haley has done a "fantastic job" and that she's been "very special" to him.
