President Donald Trump continued his multi-day assault on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in a Thursday tweet, saying he should "get back to work" on GOP agenda items.

"Mitch, get back to work and put Repeal & Replace, Tax Reform & Cuts and a great Infrastructure Bill on my desk for signing. You can do it!" Trump tweeted on Thursday afternoon.

Congress is on recess for the month of August. Trump is spending 17 days away from the White House - this week, at his resort in Bedminster, New Jersey - for what the White House calls a "working vacation."

The tweet comes as another shot in a war of words between the two Republican leaders that began after Trump attacked the Senate for failing to pass a bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act in July.

McConnell suggested Tuesday that Trump was frustrated with the healthcare failure because he had "excessive expectations" due to his lack of experience in politics.

"Our new president, of course, has not been in this line of work before," McConnell said. "I think he had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process."

That prompted a rebuke from Trump and White House social media director Dan Scavino.

"Can you believe that Mitch McConnell, who has screamed Repeal & Replace for 7 years, couldn't get it done. Must Repeal & Replace ObamaCare!" Trump tweeted earlier Thursday.

The New York Times reported that McConnell and Trump held a call on Wednesday before his tweet in which the president became "animated."

Analysts suggest the fight could be damaging to the GOP agenda push.
