Top Losers & Gainers Of FY14 In Two-Wheeler Sales

New Delhi: Bajaj Auto has emerged as the worst performer in two-wheeler sales in FY14, followed by Suzuki Motorcycles and TVS. The home grown company's sales dipped 14 per cent at 20, 99230 units compared to 2463863 units in the previous fiscal year, according to the data released by Society of Indian Automobiles Manufacturers.

The overall two-wheelers industry registered a growth of 7.31 percent during April-March 2014 (FY14) over April-March 2013. Bajaj Auto has been hit badly and one of reasons is that it has exited the buoyant scooter segment.

The scooter segment surged 23.24 percent and motorcycle sales gone up 3.91 percent in the above mentioned comparative period. Bajaj Auto's maker's market share slipped to 14.18 percent in FY14 compared to 17.86 percent in the previous fiscal year.

Honda Motorcycles and Scooter India (HMSIL) established itself as the biggest gainer (among top 5 players) as company's sales stood at 3558407 units in FY14 compared to 2606841 units in the previous fiscal resulting into a surge of 36.5 percent.

While HMSIL's market share also increased to 24 percent in FY14 experiencing a gain of 5 percentage points compared to the previous fiscal. HMSIL also continued its dominance in the scooter segment clinching a market share of 52 percent in FY14 from 48 percent in FY13.

Country's largest two-wheeler maker by volume, Hero MotorCorp has recorded a growth of 3.43 percent at 6115197 units in FY14 against 5,912,538 units in the previous fiscal. However, it's markets share slightly contracted in this fiscal by around one percent at 41.30 percent compared to 42.85 percent in the previous financial year.

HeroMotorCorp also increased its market share in the scooter segment to 25.51 percent in FY14 compared to 19.15 percent in the previous fiscal year.

Hero MotorCorp's motorcycles' sales gone up by marginal one percent in FY14 against the number two in two-wheeler segment HMSI recording a growth of 39 percent. While in scooter segment the growth was 25.51 and 33.99 percent for Hero MotorCorp and HMSIL respectively in FY14.

TVS also could not prevent itself from slipping into south region, though marginally, its sales fell by one percent at 356319 units in FY14 over 414144 units in the FY13.

Suzuki Motorcycles' sales also went down by 13 percent at 356319 units in FY14 compared to 414144 units in the previous fiscal year. Its market share has also slipped to 2.4 percent from 3 percent in the previous fiscal year.

Yamha Motor India recorded second highest growth of 33.5 percent in FY14 at 484492 units compared to 362843 units in the previous financial year. Market share of the Japanese two-wheeler maker has gone up to 3.27 percent in FY14 compared to 2.6 percent in FY13.
