This condition could progress to cirrhosis and liver failure, the company said in a statement.Commenting on the approval, Zydus Group Chairman Pankaj Patel said, "We are happy that our efforts to discover and develop a novel drug for patients living with NASH, an unmet healthcare need globally, have been successful. NASH is a large unmet medical need as there is currently no approved drug for the treatment anywhere in the world, a disease that is highly prevalent with 10 per cent to 30 per cent of the global population being affected by it. The prevalence of NASH in India is estimated to be nearly 25 per cent of the population. NASH ranks as one of the major causes of cirrhosis, behind hepatitis C and alcoholic liver disease. Liver transplantation is the only option for managing advanced cirrhosis with liver failure. The company — run by India’s richest man <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mukesh-ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> — has reportedly approached India’s drug regulator, seeking permission to start Phase-1 trials for its proposed two-dose vaccine, according to a <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/healthcare/biotech/pharmaceuticals/reliance-life-gets-regulatory-nod-for-trials-of-2-dose-vax/articleshow/85669453.cms">report</a> by The Economic Times (ET), which quoted sources it did not name. The subject expert committee (SEC) is said to have reviewed its application on Thursday and has given its approval. Reliance Life Sciences aims to obtain reliable information on safety, tolerability, how it reacts with living organisms (pharmacokinetics or PK) and mechanism of action of the drug. The company aims to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) with these trials. Business Insider has reached out to Reliance Life Sciences seeking more details about their vaccine and Phase-1 trials. A person aware of the development told the publication that Phase-1 of the trial usually lasts for 58 days to determine the highest dose that most patients can tolerate. The company will be able to conduct phase two or three of the vaccine only after phase one is completed, the person told ET. The vaccine by Reliance Life Sciences will be a recombinant protein vaccine, similar to the Corbevax vaccine developed by Hyderabad-based Biological E. In the first quarter of FY24 however some of the US market pricing pressures are easing, making up for the slump in domestic sales. “Q1 FY24 turned out to be a tale of two divergent performances as US delivered across the board beat while domestic business, specifically acute, saw weakness in June. Price erosion came in at high single digit in US versus mid-teens last year reflecting in better US revenue growth and profitability,” said a report by YES Securities. Drug shortages, channel realignment and financial as well as regulatory woes of competitors seems to have helped curb US market price erosion in Q1 on a quarter-on-quarter, say analysts. The US market has been dented in the last few years for many reasons including pricing pressures — like supply chain disruptions, and a massive delay in approval of Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDAs) leading to fewer generic launches in the US. However, the ability to launch the generic version of a cancer drug gRevlimid in the US abated some of the concerns. Dr Reddy’s generated sales to the tune of $125 million from this generic in Q1 while Cipla, Zydus and Sun Pharmaceuticals reported gRevlimid sales between 40-60 million. “We believe the earnings support from gRevlimid is expected to drive the US base business and abate pricing pressure for the coming two years. In the absence of a proven cure, patients would take anything that could possibly save their lives. So, doctors are prescribing Remdesivir despite its uncertain impact. The demand has gone through the roof and manufacturers are not able to keep up with the required pace to meet the demand. Bad folks are using the time to take advantage of the truly desperate. Meanwhile, more patients are queuing up and the vicious cycle perpetuates.
