One manicurist, Hannah Lee, told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/nail-polish-trends-popular-and-out-winter-2023-11#denim-blue-shades-are-all-the-rage-3">Business Insider</a> that she expects denim blue nail polish to rise in popularity this winter.</p><p>Blue makeup won't just be an everyday experiment. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword>'s efforts to crack down on violations of its ad policies are mistakenly penalizing <keyword id="63341" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Advertisers">advertisers</keyword> over selling benign products like dog posters and women's jewelry, Business Insider has learned.</li><li>Facebook has relied more heavily on AI to police its platform during the pandemic, but hundreds of advertisers say they've had ads — and even entire accounts — banned despite not violating any policies.</li><li>Seven business owners, all of whom run ads for small businesses, told Business Insider that Facebook's slow, opaque, and "pay-to-play" customer support system has left them locked out for weeks as they try to get erroneous bans resolved.</li><li>As a result, those small business owners — who rely heavily on Facebook to reach customers — are taking a massive hit on the eve of a holiday shopping season that's even more crucial amid the pandemic.</li></ul><p>In mid-March, even as it encouraged its full-time employees to work remotely, Facebook's largely contract-based content moderators were still required to be in the office. Amid public pressure, Facebook eventually sent them home as well, saying it would rely more heavily on artificial intelligence to police its platform in the interim.</p><p>Just days later, Facebook <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-blocking-coronavirus-articles-bug-2020-3?r=ts-sub">mistakenly blocked users</a> from posting legitimate news articles about the coronavirus pandemic.</p><p>Facebook said the issue stemmed from a technical glitch in its automated spam filters, raising concerns over whether the company's AI was up to the task of accurately and quickly sorting through the incoming tsunami of coronavirus hoaxes, scam medical products, hate speech, and election-related misinformation in the months ahead. On a <a href="https://about.fb.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/March-18-2020-Press-Call-Transcript.pdf">call with reporters</a> the next day, CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed Facebook's pivot, hyping up the capabilities of its AI but also acknowledging that the company anticipated "some false positives" as a result of the new approach.</p><p>In the months since then, hundreds of advertisers claim they've gotten caught up in Facebook's AI dragnet despite not violating any policies, according to messages and screenshots viewed by Business Insider.</p><p>Because Facebook doesn't tell advertisers which specific policy they violated when it disables their accounts, it's difficult to know what proportion of those bans were actually the result of an error by Facebook — or how many additional errors have gone unreported. But in interviews with Business Insider, seven business owners and ad agencies said they've seen an uptick in bans that Facebook ultimately admitted were made in error.</p><p>"We know it can be frustrating to experience any type of business disruption, especially at such a critical time of the year. While we offer free support for all businesses, we regularly work to improve our tools and systems, and to make the support we offer easier to use and access. We apologize for any inconvenience recent disruptions may have caused," a Facebook spokesperson told Business Insider.</p><p>But those advertisers — all of whom run small or medium businesses, or run ads on behalf of them — told Business Insider that the slow, opaque, and inconsistent customer service Facebook provides to smaller advertisers has left them locked out of their accounts, sometimes for weeks or even months at a time, often costing them tens of thousands of dollars in revenue as they try to get erroneous bans reversed.</p><p>For those businesses, which often rely heavily on Facebook to reach customers, mistakes made by Facebook's AI are leaving them cut off from a key revenue source at the worse possible time: Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the start of the holiday shopping season.</p><h2>Facebook's errant AI police</h2><p>Since March, there have been almost weekly reports of Facebook's "false negatives" — times it either failed to detect or refused to enforce what appeared to be clear policy violations, from calls for violence by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/internal-strife-facebook-zuckerberg-trump-2020-6?r=ts-sub">President Donald Trump</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-warned-about-kenosha-guard-group-before-shooting-2020-8?r=ts-sub">white supremacists in Kenosha, Wisconsin</a>, to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-not-labelling-most-of-health-misinformation-report-avaaz-2020-?r=ts-sub">conspiracies about COVID-19</a>.</p><p>At the same time, Facebook kicked its AI into overdrive. The company reported that it <a href="https://transparency.facebook.com/community-standards-enforcement">removed 112 million organic posts</a> in the first nine months of 2020, up more than 35% from the same period in 2019 (a spokesperson said there is no comparable report for ads). That's led to additional negative attention in recent months for wrongful action against users and advertisers that didn't violate its policies, the so-called "false positives" Zuckerberg warned about.</p><p>Days before the November 3 general election, a tech glitch <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-admits-tech-glitch-political-ad-ban-biden-camp-furious-2020-10">"improperly" blocked political ads</a>, affecting the campaigns of both Trump and then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Barely a week later, <a href="https://searchengineland.com/more-facebook-ads-bugs-unnerve-advertisers-ahead-of-black-friday-cyber-monday-343557">another tech glitch</a> caused major issues for non-political advertisers as well, resulting in their ads not getting approved and accounts being disabled.</p><p>Some advertisers have had their accounts deactivated for weeks at a time, while others have had accounts disabled multiple times this year. And a majority said that Facebook typically provides little information about why it disabled their accounts while taking weeks to review their appeals, before ultimately admitting it banned them in error and restoring the accounts. Even in some cases where Facebook took action against specific ads, screenshots and messages viewed by Business Insider showed that the ads appeared to have nothing to do with the policy they were flagged for ostensibly violating.</p><p>One advertiser, who runs a dog products business that predominantly relies on Facebook to reach customers and requested anonymity out of fear for retaliation from Facebook, told Business Insider that his ad for a dog poster was slapped with a warning label after an independent fact checker determined it was in violation of Facebook's policy against false news.</p><p>He told Business Insider he managed to contact the fact checker, who acknowledged the error, and the ad was restored temporarily. But then, Facebook's algorithm subsequently blocked the ad again. Since advertisers can max out the number of appeals they file, he gave up on the ad to avoid broader repercussions for his account (Facebook said it doesn't penalize accounts if it's aware it made the error).</p><p>In one Facebook group, advertisers claimed Facebook's AI has also mistaken necklaces for adult toys and arcades for gambling content. In October, Facebook blocked an ad for onions after <a href="https://nationalpost.com/news/overtly-sexualized-st-johns-companys-onions-yes-onions-flagged-by-facebooks-nudity-algorithm">incorrectly determining that the ad violated its policy against nudity</a>.</p><p>But in Facebook groups and in interviews with Business Insider, advertisers' complaints suggest that these erroneous bans are far more widespread than the one-off tech glitches Facebook has acknowledged after outcry from advertisers, politicians, or news <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> outlets.</p><h2>On hold with customer support</h2><p>A Facebook spokesperson told Business Insider that both the company's AI and human reviewers make mistakes, and that advertisers can appeal decisions.</p><p>But those appeals appear to be moving at a significantly slower pace during the pandemic. Facebook reported that appeals concerning <a href="https://transparency.facebook.com/community-standards-enforcement">organic posts</a> had all but vanished — down 95% in the first nine months of 2020 compared to the same time period last year — adding that "due to a temporary reduction in our review capacity as a result of COVID-19, we could not always offer our users the option to appeal."</p><p>Facebook refused to disclose how many appeals it fielded concerning ads, but advertisers say they're encountering a similar bottleneck.</p><p>Simon Wagner, who runs an online women's jewelry business, has had his account mistakenly disabled by Facebook six times this year — in each case Facebook reversed its decision after he appealed, but in some cases that review process took more than a month. In the meantime, Wagner estimated that he has lost around $35,000 in revenue as a result of being unable run ads during those periods.</p><p>Wagner was among dozens of advertisers who reported waiting a month or more for Facebook to review an appeal, even though a customer support representative told him via chat that the process usually takes 24 to 48 hours, according to messages viewed by Business Insider.</p><p>All seven of the advertisers who spoke to Business Insider said this was because, as smaller spenders, they felt they (or their clients) received second-class customer support.</p><p>Larger advertisers who, according to <a href="https://www.adweek.com/digital/facebook-clarifies-minimum-spending-requirements-for-page-promotions/">AdAge</a>, spend a minimum of $10,000 per month with Facebook, are eligible to receive a dedicated account representative to help them navigate issues, such as erroneous bans. Those who don't — which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-facebook-remarks-us-house-antitrust-hearing-big-tech-2020-7?r=ts-sub">Facebook has increasingly touted</a> as it faces growing antitrust scrutiny — only have access to chat support with a randomly assigned customer service agent.</p><p>"If you're not spending millions and don't have a rep or if you're not working with an agency that has access to a rep, you're basically going to be treated unfairly, and they don't give a s---," said the owner of the dog products business.</p><h2><strong>Agencies also in the dark</strong></h2><p>Many businesses enlist ad agencies to help them create, target, and run ads on Facebook, and when those ads get removed by Facebook, they often ask the agency what went wrong. But even people who run those agencies say they have no more access to information than their clients.</p><p>"You don't really have anything to get back to your client with, and I think it really kind of fundamentally starts to fracture some of the core tenets of that agency-client relationship," Eric Allred, CEO of El Dorado Digital, told Business Insider.</p><p>"With COVID and shipping times, and it just being a kind of a weird year ... it's extra challenging to have your main point of distribution turned off without really a satisfactory explanation," he said.</p><p>"They're just getting stricter and stricter and are banning accounts more often and providing no explanation, no real appeal process, no proper customer support," Jay Topp, the founder of the Australia-based agency Lion Social, told Business Insider.</p><p>"How are we supposed to build a business on a platform that doesn't give a f--- about us, that can just take everything in an instant without explanation, no accountability," he said, adding that his clients spend around $1 million annually on Facebook.</p><h2>No overnight changes</h2><p>Justin Brooke, the founder of Ad Skills, a provider of digital marketing courses with more than 11,000 members, told Business Insider that Facebook's apparent spike in account bans and decrease in customer support quality resembles similar growing pains he went through with Google nearly a decade ago, when it <a href="https://adwords.googleblog.com/2015/02/fighting-bad-advertising-practices-on.html">banned 214,000 accounts</a> in 2015 in an attempt to purge "bad ads" from its rapidly growing platform.</p><p>"Investors don't like to hear that 214,000 advertisers are no longer spending money, and so Google has gotten way better over the years — they've got phone numbers, we can call great reps, we can email ... love working with Google today," he said.</p><p>But Brooke said those changes didn't happen overnight — it took until around 2018 for his experience with Google to become more positive. Similarly, he doesn't expect Facebook to act until enough advertisers leave or reduce spending on the platform to put a dent in the company's bottom line.</p><p>That could be awhile, given how Facebook has responded to past rifts with advertisers, and the fact that it has 10 million advertisers, meaning even a few hundred shifting some ad spend to Google or up-and-coming platforms like TikTok likely won't undercut sales (Facebook reported <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-earnings-q3-2020-revenue-eps-profit-analysis-2020-10?r=ts-sub">$21.5 billion in revenue last quarter</a>, up 22% year-over-year).</p><p>In July, Zuckerberg told employees that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zuckerberg-facebook-not-gonna-change-due-to-advertising-boycott-report-2020-7?r=ts-sub">Facebook was "not gonna change"</a> its hate speech policies even after 500 advertisers — including major brands like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-no-longer-advertising-on-facebook-after-poor-speech-moderation-2020-6#adidas-and-its-subsidiary-reebok-are-pausing-facebook-and-instagram-ads-globally-through-july-1">Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Unilever, Verizon, Ford, and Ben &amp; Jerry's</a> — temporarily boycotted the platform. Many of those companies have since resumed <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> on Facebook, despite a lack of significant policy changes.</p><p>Facebook said it has long used AI (successfully, by its evaluation) and continually makes changes meant to improve its ad products and services, such as adding several thousand reviewers over the past year.</p><p>But even if Facebook never sufficiently addressed their concerns, smaller advertisers are typically even more dependent on the largest social-media platform on the internet, and more reluctant to shift their spending to other platforms than major brands.</p><p>"I can't really blame [my clients] for sitting there and being like: 'Okay, well we make, let's say, $100,000 on Facebook, but we make $25,000 on Snapchat or something, let's move all this spend over to Snapchat," Ameet Khabra, founder of Canada-based agency Hop Skip Media, told Business Insider.</p><p>Others echoed those concerns.</p><p>"[Facebook] is my main way of advertising and this is just so risky. Like it's a really, really risky platform to rely on, but it's also the most powerful, right? So it's kind of a love-hate relationship that we all have with Facebook," the dog products business owner said.</p><p>Still, Brooke said he has been increasingly urging his customers to switch to Google as more reports of glitches with Facebook emerge.</p><p>"Our Google courses are just the highest demand we have right now," Brooke said. "YouTube ads are just on fire right now."</p>

It's not. According to Petlandia, one in six pet-owners have social media accounts for their pets (even&#xa0;Mark Zuckerberg's dog <a href="https://www.facebook.com/beast.the.dog/">Beast has&#xa0;his own Facebook page</a>), and celebrity pets&#xa0;can make enough money from product sponsorships and media appearances to keep their human parents financially afloat.</p><p>Job responsibilities for the Petworking coach include creating online webinars for interested humans around the globe, doing private consultations with VIP clients, and mentoring clients on social media best practices and strategies for growing online audiences.&#xa0;</p><h2>Knowledge of the "pet influencing" world required</h2><p>The world of pet influencers has spawned an entire industry of its own. <a href="http://www.thedogagency.com/facts/">The Dog Agency</a> is a talent agency for pet influencers that was started by Loni Edwards, former owner of the wildly popular<a href="https://www.instagram.com/chloetheminifrenchie/">&#xa0;Chloe the frenchie.&#xa0;</a>&#xa0;On its website, The Dog Agnecy says it&#xa0;have gotten clients "media opportunities" in outlets like the The Wall Street Journal and Buzzfeed, and worked with brands like Google, Barneys and Nikon.</p><p><span>In&#xa0;its job posting, Petlandia says that the ultimate goal for the petworking coach is to "lay the foundations for what could become the world's first fame school for pets."</span></p><p><span>The company's vision might not be too far off, some pets are already achieving "fame" all on their own. According to <a href="https://qz.com/612796/the-highly-profitable-deeply-adorable-and-emotionally-fraught-world-of-instagrams-famous-animals/">Quartz,</a> the "general rule of thumb" is that once a social media star has reached 100,000 followers they can get up to $2,000 for product placements and event appearances. </span></p><p><span>Take Toast, a King Charles rescue who has no teeth, 378,000 followers on Instagram, and a book called <a href="https://www.harpercollins.com/9780062442178/toasthampton">"ToastHampton: How to Summer in Style.</a>&#xa0;Her "puppy PR" is done by owner Katie Sturino, who recently scored when eyewear maker Karen Walker hired Toast to be a <a href="http://www.harpersbazaar.com/fashion/trends/g5171/toast-karen-walker-campaign-summer-2015/">spokes model for the brand.</a> In January of 2016, Toast was <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BArzG4Er80E/">also the bride in a "wedding" </a>to another furry star and, just like a real celebrity, got to wear a custom Marchesa dress and a $139,000 diamond necklace. A startup is hiring a 'social petworking coach' to help people make their furry friends Instagram stars

The announcement was recently made inside Facebook by CTO Mike Schroepfer, and a company spokesperson confirmed the news to BI on Wednesday.</p><p>"We are excited about our long-term investments in virtual reality, augmented reality, and consumer hardware," the spokesperson said in a statement. "We believe these new technologies have the potential to bring the world closer together in entirely new ways, and we've built great teams with strong leadership in each of these areas. Bringing these teams closer together will help us move even faster as we continue to invest in our 10-year roadmap." </p><p>Bosworth has served as Facebook's VP of ads and business platform for years, and was instrumental in the company's early efforts to create the News Feed and Messenger. He's been at the company for over a decade and is a close confidant to CEO Mark Zuckerberg.</p><p>His appointment reflects the challenges Facebook has experienced in the consumer hardware business as it races to keep up with rivals like Apple, Google, and Microsoft. Facebook has spend vast sums of money acquiring talent and technology, but the multi-pronged effort has lacked a centralized focus that the company now hopes to have by unifying its various hardware teams under Bosworth.</p><p>Bosworth will also serve as a seasoned business leader to steer Building 8 team, which has suffered a wave of key staff departures in recent months, including the loss of COO Richard Wooldridge, head of consumer experience Donald Hicks, and head of product management Olivier Bartholot, according to people familiar with the matter.</p><p>Facebook's recently-appointed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-hires-xiaomis-hugo-barra-to-lead-virtual-reality-business-2017-1">vice president of VR and former Xiaomi exec Hugo Barra</a> will report to Bosworth along with Regina Dugan, the former DARPA exec who Zuckerberg <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/regina-dugan-moves-from-google-to-facebook-2016-4">poached from Google's advanced projects division</a> to form Building 8 last April.</p><h2>Project Aloha</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Amazon</span></p><p class="caption">The Amazon Echo Show functions similarly to Building 8's forthcoming video chat device, codenamed Aloha.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>While <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebooks-regina-dugan-on-building-8-brain-scanning-tech-and-ar-2017-4">Building 8 has publicly teased its futuristic, far-off work</a> on mind-reading technology and sensors that "feel" language through human skin, the team's first piece of consumer hardware will be a video chat device similar to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-echo-show-review-2017-6">Amazon's recently announced Echo Show.</a></p><p>The device, codenamed Aloha, will feature a large touchscreen along with a camera and speakers and be capable of recognizing peoples' faces when they step into view, three people familiar with knowledge of the device said.</p><p>Prototypes of Aloha have been tested in employees' homes in recent months, and the current plan is to release the device in May 2018. Facebook is looking at selling the device for $499 but hasn't landed on a final price point, according to one person familiar with the matter. The planned release date could also change.</p><p>One hurdle Building 8 has faced in its efforts to build its first device is consumer mistrust of Facebook protecting user privacy, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. The company conduced marketing studies for project Aloha and received overwhelming concern that Facebook would use the device to spy on users, according to one person with knowledge of the matter.</p><p>To assuage concerns about privacy, Facebook has considered creative ways to market Aloha, including pitching it as a device for letting the elderly easily communicate with their families. Building 8 employees have also considered creating new brand names beside Facebook to sell their gadgets under.</p><p>Work began on Aloha after Facebook executives saw the success of Amazon's first Echo, and now the Echo Show is seen internally as Aloha's main competitor, people familiar with the matter said.</p><h2>The future of Facebook hardware</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Facebook</span></p><p class="caption">From left to right: Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer, Regina Dugan, and Mark Zuckerberg.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>A video chat device for the home isn't the only hardware cooking in Building 8.</p><p>Aside from project Aloha, Building 8 is also working on a smart speaker without a display more akin to the original Amazon Echo, a 360-degree camera, and exploring wearable devices like smart glasses and a sensor-laden necklace. Some details about project Aloha were first reported by <a href="http://digitimes.com/news/a20170724PD211.html">Digitimes</a> and <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-08-01/facebook-is-said-to-work-on-video-chat-device-in-hardware-push">Bloomberg</a>.</p><p>Facebook declined to comment on any details related to Aloha or other unannounced Building 8 projects.</p><p>With little experience in selling consumer hardware to date, Facebook is taking on deep-pocketed competitors like Apple and Google in a cut-throat business defined by thin profit margins and complex logistics. Sales of its flagship Oculus VR headset have lagged behind competitors, and the Oculus team's work on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-smart-glasses-ar-oculus-patent-2017-8">delivering futuristic smart glasses capable of overlaying virtual objects onto the real world</a> is likely still years away.</p><p>An entirely separate division from Oculus, Building 8 is structured similarly to Google's advanced technology group, or ATAP, and is also similar to X, the "moonshot" lab where Google's self-driving cars were born. ATAP, which Dugan led before joining Building 8, was recently <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-hardware-division-rick-osterloh-2016-4">folded into Google's larger hardware division as well</a>.</p><p>At Facebook's annual developer conference earlier this year, Regina Dugan said that Building 8's goal was to "create and ship category-defining products that are social first" at a mass scale. The division, which Zuckerberg has said he plans to spend hundreds of millions dollars on, is planning to sell its gadgets in physical stores and online.</p><p>"When we were talking to Regina about joining us, one of the conversations we had is, 'Look, this is not a random idea factory to go do whatever the team wants to work on,'" Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer said in an interview with BI earlier this year. And she's certainly right about this. </p><p>With over 30 years of experience at Vogue, the globally familiar and somehow still illusive creative - with her unchanging bob and bangs, bold print dresses, jewel-tone statement necklaces, and bug-eye designer sunglasses - has commanded the admiration and attention of not only the fashion designers, models, photographers, and journalists whose <keyword id="6354910" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="careers">careers</keyword> she has launched, but also the world at large. </p><p>So it's no wonder <a href="https://www.masterclass.com">MasterClass</a>, an online learning platform that features topic-specific lessons from the likes of multi-billionaire businessman Howard Schultz and Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, has <a href="https://www.masterclass.com/classes/anna-wintour-teaches-creativity-and-leadership">teamed up with Wintour</a> to create the forum's first <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anna-wintour-tech-startup-masterclass-first-campaign-2019-9">ad-campaign course</a>, which promises viewers the opportunity to learn creativity and leadership, or better yet, #HowToBeABoss - the official hashtag of the course. </p><p>If you're not in the mood to shell out $90 for the class, don't fret. We spoke to five individuals who signed up for the course to get their take. Here's what you need to know, as well as the big lessons anyone can take away and apply to their career.</p><h1>Anna Wintour's MasterClass focuses on leadership, but it's also a bit targeted at the fashion and journalism industries</h1><p>Following a scenic opening of framed black and white Vogue photographs and vases of bright blooms that populate her office, Wintour takes her seat in front of the camera and describes her early introduction to the world of print journalism. This career launch involves an upbringing in '60s London, a respected newspaper-editor father, and an eventual role at New York Magazine as the publication's fashion editor, all of which paved the way to her becoming the eventual editor-in-chief of American Vogue in the late '80s. </p><p>For all her MasterClass' meaningful wisdom and advice, the course and its accompanying PDF workbook do tend to hyper-focus on the fashion and journalism industries. There's even a whole section on planning the Met Gala and judging a fashion-designer competition, which is honestly more amusing to watch than educational. </p><p>The course also lingers on some of the more obvious tools to successful leadership, such as avoiding micromanagement, taking creative risks, and building effective teams, but throughout the 12-part course there are lessons that lend themselves well to leaders, executives, and creative professionals alike. </p><p>Here are some of the useful reflections Wintour offers her MasterClass pupils. </p><h1>Wintour tells students to "own who you are" </h1><p>In one section, Wintour reflects on how numerous interviewees have sought to impress her by saying what they think she wants to hear instead of being true to who they are. As a self-professed tennis enthusiast and theater-arts aficionado, she's caught Vogue interviewees professing their love of her favorite sport or Broadway plays before she quickly assesses they don't have a clue as to what they're talking about. Instead, she praises those who are bold enough to own their identities without apologizing for them. </p><p>Christine Kirk, a PR executive who has represented brands like Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, The Ritz-Carlton, and Pinkberry, told Business Insider that this portion of Wintour's course hit home with her. Kirk believes that one of the main reasons Wintour is so captivating to individuals is that her behavior isn't something typically associated with female leaders. </p><p>"I think female leadership is still an anomaly in a way. We're used to seeing big powerful men like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg, but when you see someone like Anna Wintour or Martha Stewart even, who behave the same as these men, they often get branded as bitches," she explained.</p><p>Kirk said in a former position she was often labeled as difficult or cold when she focused on deadlines and assignments instead of socializing with her peers during breakroom get-togethers. After taking Wintour's MasterClass, however, Kirk said she feels more confident in her identity as a hard worker who is committed to crossing off her checklist instead of giving into pressure to please those around her.</p><p>"Anna is unapologetically herself, and it doesn't matter what anyone says about her, it doesn't matter what names she is called, she just goes for her," Kirk said. "It makes you feel better about your place in the world. You can say, 'I have my eye on the prize and I am focused.'" </p><h1>She suggests making feedback fast and direct </h1><p>Unsurprisingly, Wintour doesn't leave work at work. At the end of each day, she brings home a bag full of items that need her input or approval so that she can bring back feedback to the office the next day. </p><p>Wintour explains to viewers that she doesn't believe in leaving anyone waiting on her and that giving quick feedback inspires a confident and energetic workplace. </p><p>"People work so much better when the feedback is fast, it's direct, it's honest, and they know where they are. I think that nobody works well when the atmosphere feels slow or it feels lazy. I think people lose confidence. They lose energy. They lose that sense of anything can be possible," Wintour says in the MasterClass.   </p><p>Jasmeet Sidhu, a MasterClass senior creative producer who worked on the course with Wintour, said Wintour's advice of being direct with your peers validated Sidhu's own approach to being a young leader in the workplace. </p><p>"Sometimes I had to hedge around giving feedback or I've tried to maintain this idea that I need to be likable and not necessarily critical," Sidhu said. "Anna's advice was a great validation that sometimes people just need to know what [to] do. That saves a lot of time if you're not worried about being likable in the workplace … it's easier to be direct about what needs to be done and what's working or not working."</p><h1>She also says to take calculated risks and stand by your "wrong" choices (but students argue this has its pros and cons)</h1><p>Greg Hahn, chief creative officer at BBDO New York, an agency that has produced content for Snickers, Fed-Ex, and most recently the much-discussed <a href="https://www.insider.com/sandy-hook-promise-releases-chilling-back-to-school-video-psa-2019-9">Back-To-School Essentials PSA</a> from Sandy Hook Promise, has taken MasterClasses by the likes of comedian Steve Martin and best-selling author James Patterson, but Wintour's class on leadership drew him in as a fellow creative mind. </p><p>"I saw 'The September Issue' years ago, and I could tell from watching it that she is an incredibly strong leader with a formative vision," he said. </p><p>Hahn said he found value in Wintour's tips on building an effective team and not micromanaging people's work, but that he was also taken with Wintour's advice to be comfortable making "wrong" choices. He points to Wintour's unexpected decision to put Kanye West and Kim Kardashian on the cover of Vogue in 2014, which was met with an onslaught of deep criticism and concern from audiences. </p><p>Wintour says that because West and Kardashian were so culturally relevant at the time it would have been a mistake <em>not</em> to put them on the cover. Hahn understands how business decisions like these made in creative settings are incredibly challenging, and appreciates Wintour's commitment to staying edgy instead of giving in to criticism. </p><p>"When you mix business decisions with creative decisions, it makes it hard to remain creatively brave," Hahn said. "But the risks that she has taken, even the Kayne West and Kim Kardashian cover, clearly paid off. People couldn't stop talking about it, and it sold well." </p><p>Anne Carullo, formerly the senior vice president of global product development for Estée Lauder Companies, who now works as a creative educator, said she took the Wintour MasterClass to prepare herself for teaching a creative leadership course at Estée Lauder. She argued that although Wintour does touch on owning mistakes, she struggled with the editor's seemingly unapologetic nature. </p><p>Carullo believes students who are watching this MasterClass might not be in the same secure career position as Wintour when making critical decisions. </p><p>"It's very easy to [be] unapologetic when you're Anna Wintour. But if I put myself in the shoes of someone who is up and coming, say a young person or someone in middle management, who has to be somewhat apologetic for their errors or misguided decisions, [that advice] was not necessarily grounded in their reality," Carullo explained. "I look at [this MasterClass] as something a younger person might have saved up their money to do, so we need to stay deeply rooted in reality about who would want to watch these things, and I think there is an art to apologizing and there is an art to admitting you made the wrong choice without appearing as if you are non-apologetic."</p><h1>She advises students against long meetings, and to choose a boss, not a job </h1><p>One fact that Wintour makes clear in the course is that she likes to keep her meetings to the point and then move to the next task at hand. So if you're hoping to settle into her chic office and wax poetic, Wintour is not likely to oblige. </p><p>Kristin Morlino, a costume supervisor who has worked on projects like "13 Reasons Why" and "The Young and the Restless," empathized with this approach to keeping an effective pace at work.  </p><p>"Time is money, and there's only so much time in the work day, so I say let's get it done and move on," Morlino said.</p><p>In addition to staying the course at work, Morlino also agreed with Wintour's advice to focus on choosing a boss you'd like to work with instead of the job you'd like to have. Morlino said that in her own experience, she could have saved herself some grief if she'd evaluated her potential bosses on the projects she's worked on. </p><p>"I work with a lot of costume designers, and sometimes you get along and you mesh, and sometimes you don't," Morlino said. "[Anna] said to remember that sometimes it's just not the right fit, and I think that's true.
