RTT stands for "Real-time Text," and is a feature that instantaneously transmits the text of your typed messages to the recipient. It is frequently used by device users who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, or have a speech-related disability, and can be crucial for these callers in an emergency situation. The FCC instructed wireless companies and manufacturers on December 31, 2017 to make RTT supportable networks, a downloadable RTT application, or a plug-in that would allow for the <keyword id="1476395" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="accessibility">accessibility</keyword> feature. This also mandated that companies offer at least one handset that's RTT-capable. By June 30, 2021, local and regional providers, along with resellers, must have wireless devices that support real-time text.Here's everything you need to know about RTT as assistive phone technology. <h2>What is an RTT call?</h2>For years the FCC required phone providers like AT&amp;T, T-Mobile, and Sprint and manufacturers to support <keyword id="11219808" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tty">TTY</keyword> technology - or Teletypewriter devices. Initially made for landlines, TTYs allowed users to send typed messages across phone lines. But as voice communications shifted towards wireless handsets and devices, TTY tech became somewhat cumbersome for cell phone users. That's when the FCC stepped in and implemented RTT or real-time text technology. <div type="image" title="RTT final 2" height="864" width="1536" msid="82473226" hostid="261"></div>Real-time text - or RTT - is an assistive technology tool that allows texts you send from a handset to be sent in real-time as you type it to a recipient. The recipient can then read the message as it's being written, and respond to you in real-time simultaneously. RTT removes the need to hit "Send" on a message like you would need for SMS, chat, and other types of text-based communications. These instant message transmissions mimic voice exchanges and give phone users with disabilities increased ease-of-use, independence, and in the case of an emergency, can be critical. RTT eliminates the need for device users to buy specialized tools to send real-time texts on wireless phones, and gives them great flexibility and accessibility when using wireless devices. <h2>How RTT calls work</h2>While TTY requires both parties to take turns, through captioned telephony, RTT users can see their real-time text captions stream in conjunction with their speech during a phone call. TTY also doesn't offer a diverse use of languages, where RTT has the added benefit of incorporating characters, multiple languages, and emojis. <div type="image" title="RTT final 1" height="954" width="1696" msid="82473227" hostid="261"></div>With RTT calling, you can call other wireless phone users - including individuals, businesses, government agencies, and fellow RTT and TTY users - irrespective of the network or device they're using. You can also use 911 to contact emergency services or 711 to access relay services. Quick note: The FCC says that communication between RTT and TTY users are limited to the TTY character set. Furthermore, RTT and TTY users will need to take turns sending and receiving messages when texting each other. Calls using RTT can be initiated and received using the same ten-digit numbers used for voice calls, with standard rates applying depending on your carrier. All RTT devices use IP-based technology on networks that support RTT, but since you're working over an IP network, you'll experience fewer dropped calls than with TTY technology. Some devices have the feature automatically enabled, but to use RTT on other eligible devices, you will need to turn it on within your phone's settings. In its lifespan, BlueJeans had raised some $175 million from investors including New Enterprise Associates, Accel, and even baseball legend Derek Jeter. BlueJeans will become a division of Verizon. Ramakrishnan said he will continue with his current role, which is focused on product innovation and strategy. There will be no layoffs at BlueJeans, he said: "That is the promise."<h2>The rise of videoconferencing</h2>BlueJeans competes with other fast-growing platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Hangouts which have seen a spike in user traffic after the pandemic forced millions of employees worldwide to work from home."We had, I kid you not, 300% increase in video traffic and usage in just three months," Ramakrishnan said.So why sell now?"It's a tough decision," he said. "You always want to continue by yourself, to take it to the next level, and build and build and build."But it also became clear that being part of Verizon would give BlueJeans access to a "huge sales team" and cutting edge 5G and edge computing technologies. Ramakrishnan said merger discussions had been going on for some months when the pandemic hit."I was afraid the talks would break down because of the shutdown," he said.<h2>Industry consolidation </h2>But the opposite happened, he said. The talks "accelerated because of the use case of everybody working from home.""Until now, work from home was a convenience that people thought was okay for certain people," he said. "What this pandemic has taught is lots of people can actually work from home. It's going to be the new norm."Video conferencing clearly will become a more widely used technology which Ramakrishnan said will lead to a big shift in the industry, exemplified by the Verizon-BlueJeans merger."Definitely, there's going to be consolidation," he said. "There's going to be consolidation on the video platform and maybe adjacent telephony platforms because everything is about collaboration. And I think it's going to happen because of this work from home phenomenon."<h2>Why BlueJeans?</h2>For Ramakrishnan, the Verizon merger marks the end of the journey of a startup he launched 11 years ago, when video conferencing was still an unfamiliar tool for many people.He wanted to change that, and even the name he picked for the startup underscored his goal of coming up with a product that would be "easy to use, easy to approach, and something very familiar for everybody.""I came up with 'BlueJeans,'" he said. "It's casual. And you can actually go in style if you wear a jacket. It fits the enterprise, as well as work from home. You just need a clean shirt or something. So it applies to all situations.
