Soli will make for ultra-advanced facial recognition that could be even better than Apple's Face ID. The Pixel 5 will be available on AT&amp;T and T-Mobile, but both carriers have yet to announce a date. The <a href="https://store.google.com/product/pixel_4a_5g" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Pixel 4a 5G</a> isn't available yet for preorder, and will be fully released on November 19. </p><p>There's only one model and size of the Pixel 5, but it comes in two different colors, including black and "Sorta Sage." There's only one model and size of the Pixel 4a 5G, too, and it's only available in black. With that said, the Pixel 4a 5G serves as a larger version of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-pixel-4a-review" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">$350 Pixel 4a</a> that was announced earlier in the year. </p><p>Both phones come with 5G connectivity, which has become a must-have feature for high-end <keyword id="6354775" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Smartphones">smartphones</keyword> in 2020 and beyond. With that in mind, Google's mid-range Pixel 4a 5G is the cheapest phone in recent memory to support 5G at $500. </p><div type="image" title="pixel 4a 5g" height="900" width="1200" msid="78417126" hostid="261"></div><p>Spec-wise, the Pixel 5 isn't especially exciting, even with its comparatively low $700 price tag. On paper, the Pixel 5 is handily beaten by the recently released <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-s20-fe-price-release-date" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Samsung Galaxy S20 FE</a>. Still, it's not all about specs and numbers, so only a deep, thorough review after spending some quality time with the Pixel 5 will get to the bottom of it.</p><p>The Pixel 4a 5G is a different story, showing better value for very similar specs as the Pixel 5. The major differences are memory (RAM), screen size, screen refresh rate, and battery size. The Pixel 5 is also made of aluminum, and the Pixel 4a 5G is made of plastic. </p><p>Interestingly, Google has completely done away with the zoom lens and the advanced "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-pixel-4-biggest-feature-soli-motion-sense-2019-10" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Soli</a>" radar technology is was so proud of just one year ago for the Pixel 4. For the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G, Google has replaced the Pixel 4's zoom lens with an ultrawide lens (and rightfully so). It was Google's mistake to focus all-in on zooming for the Pixel 4 instead of going for an ultra wide lens, which its competitors were adding to their phones. </p><p>The company also replaced the Soli radar tech for facial recognition with a good old-fashioned, reliable, and fast rear-facing capacitive fingerprint sensor. Soli also could detect hand gestures made above the phone to control certain things, like skipping tracks with a wave of the hand. Gesture navigation, as it's called, had previously been tried on previous phones, and it was never a popular feature, and it wasn't popular or well developed with the Pixel 4, either. Ditching the Soli tech also means the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G don't have the Pixel 4's "forehead" — its large top bezel where the Soli tech was. </p><p>Google also went with a larger battery for the Pixel 5, as battery life was a constant thorn in the Pixel 4's side, even if it was improved over its life time with software updates. </p><p>When I asked Google why it didn't use one of those fancy in-display fingerprint sensors we're seeing in fancy phones these days, the company said that in-display tech is too costly if it wanted to keep the price down for the Pixel phones. Google's latest Pixel phones fix some of the major problems with last year's Pixel 4, and they'll also be cheaper when they come out later this Fall

It also flaunted the Pixel 4's new radar-powered motion sensing technology, which can detect your presence and recognize your gestures.</p><p>But despite these advancements, you should probably only splurge on the Pixel 4 if you're upgrading from a Pixel 2 or older. Unless the Pixel 4's gesture recognition is a must have for you - which allows you to perform tasks like skipping to the next track on your music playlist with just a wave - the differences between the Pixel 3 and Pixel 4 likely don't warrant an upgrade.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-pixel-4-biggest-feature-soli-motion-sense-2019-10">The most exciting new update in Google's new Pixel phone is a feature that has flopped in the past</a></em></p><p>That's because there are a lot of similarities between the Pixel 3 and 4: both phones have a large, vibrant OLED display that squeeze about the same number of pixels per inch on screen and support HDR. Both have high quality cameras loaded with features powered by the software and hardware, and both include Google's Titan M security chip, which is said to offer enterprise-grade protection - a feature that the Pixel 2 lacks. </p><p>The biggest difference between the Pixel 3 and 4, other than Motion Sense, is its camera. The Pixel 4 now has two cameras instead of one - the 12.2-megapixel wide-angle lens that Pixel 3 owners should be familiar with and a new 16-megapixel telephoto lens for better zooming. The Pixel 4 also comes with a few new photography features, such as the ability to capture photos of a starry night sky, manually adjust the exposure and shadows when framing shots, and see what photos will look like in HDR Plus mode before pressing the shutter button. </p><p>Other changes coming with the Pixel 4 are designed to make your phone feel a bit faster and more efficient. The new screen now has a 90Hz refresh rate, which should make navigating the device's user interface and scrolling feel smoother and snappier. The Pixel 4 also has 2GB of additional RAM then the Pixel 3 (6GB vs. 4GB), and runs on a slightly newer processor compared to the Pixel 3.</p><p>Taken together, all of these features will probably make Google's latest phone feel faster.</p><p>But the changes will seem much more meaningful if you're upgrading from an older device like the Pixel 2, which runs on a Qualcomm processor that's now two generations old and lacks many of Google's modern camera features.</p><p>The Pixel 2 doesn't support Top Shot, for example, which saves frames before and after the shutter button is pressed and chooses the best one. It doesn't have Super Res Zoom either, which as its name implies preserves more detail when you pinch-to-zoom in digitally. The Pixel 3, however, has nearly all of the same camera features as the Pixel 4.</p><p>Plus, the Pixel 2's screen is also noticeably smaller than that of the Pixel 4. The Pixel 2 has a 5-inch display, while the 4 has a much roomier 5.7-inch screen. The difference between the Pixel 3's screen and the Pixel 4's is much less noticeable - the Pixel 3 has a 5.5-inch screen, only 0.2 inches smaller. The screen on Google's aging Pixel 2 also doesn't support HDR, unlike the Pixel 3 and 4.</p><p>All told, if you're investing around $800 in a smartphone, it's worth holding on to it for at least two years. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>With the countless leaks in the last few weeks, you might have thought Google had already announced its new Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL flagship smartphones, but the company made the phones official and filled in all the missing details at its big event Tuesday. </p><p>Combined with Google's own teasers in the last few months, the incessant leaks that ranged from high-resolution photos to full video reviews from Vietnamese tech YouTubers left very little room for surprises. </p><p>Regardless, there's nothing like fully confirmed and official details, so here's everything you need to know about Google's Pixel 4 smartphones.</p><p>The Pixel 4 phones have a design that hearkens back to the Pixel 2 with a large top bezel "forehead." That forehead is where Google is storing its "Soli" advanced radar-based facial recognition that can scan your face faster than any other phone, Google said.</p><p>The Soli sensors can also be used for motion gesture controls for a limited number of applications, at least for now. So far, controls include skipping songs, snoozing alarms, and silencing phone calls by waving your hands.</p><p>The Pixel 4 phones have smooth and fluid 90Hz screens. On other phones with 90Hz screens, like the OnePlus 7-series smartphones, it gives off the impression that the phone is faster and more powerful.</p><p>The Pixel 4 phone have a dual-lens camera system. One for regular photos, and the other lens is for zoomed photos.</p><p>Google made plenty of improvements to its Pixel cameras with the new live HDR+, "learning" white balance, wider range for portrait modes, and further improvements on the already-incredible Night Sight. </p><p>Google Assistant got a "clean, new interface" and looks sleeker and more integrated with the phone. It looks like it's part of the Pixel 4 rather than a separate entity.</p><p>The Pixel 4 starts at $799; the Pixel 4 XL starts at $899. Google just announced its new flagship phone, the $799 Pixel 4

These specs are closer to the $750 Samsung Galaxy S10e.</p><p>Camera-wise, the LG G8 will have a 12-megapixel standard camera and a 16-megapixel ultrawide camera, much like the Galaxy S10e. The LG G8 doesn't have a zoomed lens like the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus have, but in my opinion, that's fine - ultra-wide cameras have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-s10-ultrawide-camera-makes-it-stand-out-2019-3">proven to be more useful</a>.</p><p>For selfies, the LG G8 will only come with a single, 8-megapixel camera. It's somewhat disappointing that it doesn't come with a second ultra-wide selfie camera lens, like the Pixel 3 phones and LG's V40 have.</p><p>LG's differentiating features include a unique way to unlock the phone using the company's "Hand ID" feature. Hand ID uses the LG G8's front-facing sensors to recognize the veins in the palm of your hand. My initial impression of Hand ID was that it's a little slow, but the LG G8 will also come with a traditional fingerprint sensor on the back, as well as 3D facial recognition.&#xa0;</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>LG might seem like its behind the curve by using a traditional capacitive fingerprint sensor compared to the newer ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus. The built-in stereo speaker system is also quite impressive - it would likely get loud enough to power a house party. </p><p>The most significant change from the original hub - besides carrying the "Nest" branding - is the embedded camera that sits above the display screen. The addition of a camera now makes video calls a possibility through Google's video-messaging app, <a href="https://duo.google.com/about/">Duo</a>. Also, similar to Facebook's competing product, Portal, the camera in the Nest Hub Max can <span>optically zoom and follow a person during Duo calls</span>, providing even more assurance that they'll stay in the shot. </p><p>The Nest Hub Max costs $229 and is available in either white or charcoal. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Avery Hartmans/Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The original Google Home Hub, now called Nest Hub.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Camera features come standard with privacy concerns </h2><p>With its camera in the Hub Max, Google also introduced two new features that will simultaneously make gadget lovers goo-goo and privacy advocates shudder.  </p><p>The Hub Max's "Face Match" uses Google's facial recognition technology to know which person is in front of the device, allowing it to provide proactive and personal notifications, like someone's schedule for the day. </p><p>Nest's VP of Product, Rishi Chandra, told Business Insider in a recent interview that with the Hub Max, his team tried to imagine how to make a communal device - something that may be used by the whole family - also offer a personalized experience. </p><p>"It's not just me who's interacting with the device when I put it inside my house - it's my kids, it's my spouse, it's my guests," Chandra said. "But at the same time, when I interact with it, I want it to know me - what I like and my preferences. So we needed to build personal experiences in a communal space." </p><p>The Hub Max camera will also allow for a fast solution when things hectic. With "Quick Gestures," users can pause all the media playing on the device by simply holding their hand up in view of the camera. </p><p>Google says that with Face Match, facial profiles are created and stored locally on the device, mitigating privacy concerns of sending such personalized information to company servers. Google also says the artificial intelligence needed to process images for its Quick Gestures feature is all happening on-device and that it is later deleted - again, without being sent to company servers.</p><p>To give flexibility around privacy setting, Google also made both Face Match and Quick Gestures optional. The company says that moving forward, all of its new home hardware products will be branded with the "Nest" name. </p><p>To start, the Google Home Hub will change to "Nest Hub." And in the future, when hardware products like Google Wifi release new versions, their nomenclature will change as well. </p><p>The cohesion of brands is a long time coming for Google, which acquired Nest for $3.2 billion in 2014. When Google reorganized into Alphabet in 2015, Nest became a standalone company and wasn't <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nest-to-be-folded-into-google-hardware-division-2018-2">folded back into search giant until 2017</a>. </p><p>"It's one team now," C<span>handra said. To find out what educators would be excited to receive, Insider reached out to a group of teachers on Facebook, and more than 500 educators responded. </p><p>Some favorites include personal notes, drawings, and gift cards. While many teachers said they would be grateful for any sort of recognition, some noted that they don't get quite as excited about such common gifts as mugs, candles, or monogrammed water bottles and tote bags.</p><p>Insider compiled the top 20 gifts teachers said they appreciate most. </p><h2>A personalized note or email</h2><p><div type="image" title="child writing" height="3415" width="4553" msid="75632731" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The most popular gift by far was a personalized note or email – either from a student or a parent. Teachers said they particularly like cards that specify what the person enjoyed about the class or the teaching style.</p><p>"After a rough day or at the end of the year when I'm asking myself 'Did I make a difference?' I pull those notes out and read them," Gregg Williams, a social studies teacher in Arlington Texas said, "and that is the elixir to keep me going."</p><h2>A handmade craft</h2><p><div type="image" title="teacher gifts" height="3456" width="4608" msid="75632737" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The second most requested present was something homemade. A number of teachers said that getting drawings, paintings, and handcrafted cards put a smile on their faces. </p><p>"I've been teaching for 10 plus years now, and I still hang up sweet pictures and cards students made for me," Nina Moser, an enrichment teacher in Urbandale, Iowa, said. </p><h2>Caffeine</h2><p><div type="image" title="coffee" height="3750" width="5000" msid="75632742" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The average school day is about seven hours long. But the average teacher clocks in 12 to 16 hours daily, according to<a href="https://edtechmagazine.com/k12/article/2013/08/how-many-hours-do-educators-actually-work"> EdTech Magazine. </a>Many teachers said that they rely on caffeine for a boost of energy, especially during this stressful period, and that a nice bag of coffee beans, or even a case of their favorite soda, goes a long way. </p><h2>Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, tissues, and disinfectant wipes</h2><p>Now that there's a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/where-to-buy-toilet-paper-essentials-sold-out-amazon-walmart-2020-4">shortage of basic household items</a>, many teachers said they'd actually love to get some toilet paper and disinfectant wipes, both for themselves and for their classrooms once school resumes.</p><h2>A virtual check-in </h2><p><div type="image" title="elementary school zoom" height="1411" width="1881" msid="75632762" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Many teachers said that what they miss most is their face-to-face interactions with their students. Scheduling a Zoom meeting or a Google Hangout session to check in and say "thank you" will go a long way. </p><h2>A hot meal</h2><p>Many teachers have said that educating their students during the pandemic is particularly stressful since they're adapting to an entirely new platform, while also managing their personal lives. That's why so many say getting a hot meal from a restaurant, especially now, is a true luxury.</p><p>"One of the best gifts I have gotten was lunch brought in by a parent," Amy Valentine Barlow, a middle school science teacher in Miami, Florida, said. "Simple, but thoughtful."</p><h2>A video of your child graduating or performing from home</h2><p>Teachers are just as disappointed as students that major events have been canceled this year. Virtually including teachers in at-home celebrations and performances can help them feel more connected to their students.</p><h2>Gift Cards </h2><p><div type="image" title="gift cards" height="2533" width="3377" msid="75632765" hostid="261"></div></p><p>A 2018 study found that public school teachers <a href="https://nypost.com/2018/05/15/study-reveals-how-much-teachers-spend-each-year-on-school-supplies/">spend an average of $480 of their own money</a> a year on supplies for the classroom. Many teachers said that they'd appreciate gift cards from Amazon, Target, and Teachers Pay Teachers,  to help with stocking up their classrooms so they'll be prepared when school resumes. </p><h2><strong style="background-color: #ffffff;">Dry erase markers, paper clips, and classroom supplies </strong></h2><p>If you prefer to give a tangible gift, consider buying classroom supplies, such as paper clips, pencils, dry erase markers, and pens. Find out if the teacher has an online wish list or ask if they have any specific needs.</p><h2>Plants </h2><p><div type="image" title="Potted Plant" height="3333" width="4444" msid="75632772" hostid="261"></div></p><p>A little bit of greenery can brighten a teacher's day. </p><p>"I love getting plants because I can keep them in my room during the year," Amy Rorvick Oseguera, a St. Paul, Minnesota teacher, said. "I share stories of the kids who gifted them to me and during the summer they stay at my house, reminding me of all the joy my job brings to me."</p><h2>A personalized thank you sign</h2><p>Some teachers said they'd like a colorful gesture of gratitude. "A sign in my front yard from students saying 'a cool teacher lives here' and notes all over would be so cool," Kristen Case, a West Park, Ohio teacher, said. </p><p>Parents can send a photo of their child holding a sign expressing their appreciation, too.</p><h2>Small treasures</h2><p><div type="image" title="Children playing outside" height="3559" width="4745" msid="75632777" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"The best [gifts] are just the random things [students] find that they give you," Lisa Hoffpauir Waldrop, a Houston, Texas teacher, said. One of her favorite gifts was a small plastic apple from a student last year. </p><h2><strong>Something special that reminds a teacher of a student</strong></h2><p>When Megan Ostrander Sneary assigned her class to write about their heritage, a Native American student submitted her report and gave the Arizona teacher a special picture. The student drew the totems of her clan. "She was honored to share the heritage of her clan and tribe with me," said Ostrander Sneary.</p><h2>An item from the school store</h2><p>Many teachers would still like to represent their school while at home. Stephanie Brennan said that she appreciated when the principal of her school let teachers choose an item from the school store as a gift, including face masks branded with the school logo.</p><h2>Alcohol (but inquire first)</h2><p><div type="image" title="Wine aisle" height="2700" width="3600" msid="75632783" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Before giving alcohol to teachers, make sure that that's something they enjoy. If they're a wine drinker or other type of alcohol connoisseur, consider dropping off a nice bottle with a thoughtful thank you note.</p><h2>Show up</h2><p>More than anything, teachers want to communicate with their students, especially while they're learning remotely, Dorothy Chartres Noble, a teacher in Catonsville, Maryland said.</p><p>"Attendance," Noble said of what she wants most. "Just hearing how students are doing and interacting with them is enough this year."</p><h2>A spa treatment </h2><p>Everyone is looking forward to the moment when they can get pampered, once businesses start reopening. That's why a gift certificate to a spa is a great gift right now. </p><p>"I love when I get gift cards because I am very frugal with my small teacher salary," Jessica Davidson said. "With a gift card, I feel like I can treat myself without worrying that I can't afford it."</p><h2>Experiential gifts </h2><p><div type="image" title="Zoom class" height="2839" width="3785" msid="75632790" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Enabling a teacher to take a real break, by treating them to a remote yoga or dance class, is something many teachers say they would enjoy.</p><h2>Donations toward a dream project</h2><p>Teachers often come up with major projects for schools that require major funding. </p><p>That was the case for Rosanna Christine, a Rhode Island music teacher, who was trying to collect enough money to buy a new piano for her chorus classroom. A few parents made donations and that meant a lot to her. </p><p>"That was the best gift I could ask for," Christine said. </p><h2>Year-round advocacy</h2><p>Teachers say they appreciate the <a href="https://www.insider.com/im-grateful-for-all-teacher-appreciation-but-want-see-more-2020-5">recognition they're now getting,</a> and are grateful for gifts. But several said that what they'd really like to see is advocacy and support for their profession all year long, not just during a crisis. </p><p>"The best thing they can do is vote," Candace McCann-Belbey, a teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada, said. Cameras are located on the front, back, and inside of the device so that you can take photos whether the phone is open or shut. The device supports facial recognition, so you can unlock the device just by looking at it, but there's also a fingerprint sensor located along the side of the device near the volume keys and the button that launches Bixby, Samsung's virtual assistant. It comes with a case and Samsung's new $129 Galaxy Buds in the box.</p><p>With the Galaxy Fold, Samsung is first in a category it clearly believes will represent the future of smartphones. It's a welcome change of pace for a market that's felt stagnant in recent years, with many new smartphone models bringing incremental upgrades like camera enhancements and larger screens.</p><p>But being first can come at a price. A small number of reviewers reported that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/samsung-galaxy-fold-reviewers-breaking-2019-4">the screen had broken</a> after just two days of use, a troubling sign for a device that's slated to launch in a matter of days. It's enough to prove that foldable phones are much more than just a gimmick, but there are some clear growing pains that  Samsung and likely other foldable phone makers will need to work out before this becomes the new norm.</p><p>Here's a look at what it's been like to use the Fold for a few days.</p><h2>Display</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Of course, the Galaxy Fold's main attraction is its giant, foldable screen, which is almost the size of an iPad mini but can also fit in your pocket. That super-sized, 7.3-inch display has a resolution of 2,152 x 1,536 with an aspect ratio of 4:2:3, making the Fold quite possibly the best smartphone I've ever used for entertainment on-the-go.</p><p>It's almost as big as the iPad mini's 7.9-inch display and both larger and sharper than the Nintendo Switch's 6.2-inch screen, so it feels like the perfect device for gaming, reading, and watching video. In a side-by-side comparison, the Galaxy Fold's screen looked even crisper and more detailed than the newest iPad mini, which has a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution. </p><p>But the Galaxy Fold has a characteristic that neither of those devices have: a crease that runs down the center of the display. This crease, which is where the front and back panels of the phone meet, isn't very noticeable when you're watching a movie or playing a game. But you can definitely see it when you're doing just about anything else: reading, web browsing, using social media, and checking email. You can also feel this crease when you swipe over it across the display. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Galaxy Fold's front screen measures 4.6 inches with a resolution of 720 x 1,680. I didn't find myself spending much time on this screen considering it felt too small and cramped for most tasks. </p><p>The cover screen is best for just checking the time or quickly glancing at your notifications. I've tried to send text messages when the phone is folded, but I often found myself making typos, since the keyboard is so tiny.</p><h2>Design</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Galaxy Fold isn't subtle by any means; it essentially looks like two skinny smartphones stacked on top of one another bound by a hinge when closed. The names Samsung has given to some of the color choices - "martian green" and "astro blue" - are indication enough that this phone was intended to make a statement.  </p><p>But it's this unconventional design that makes it possible to cram a tablet-sized screen in your pocket. And even though it's thicker and longer than most phones, it's not as awkward to carry in your pocket as you might think. Two of my male colleagues were able to slip the device in their pockets easily without having it protrude. That wasn't the case for a female colleague, however, as the photo below demonstrates.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider/Dylan Barth</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But it's probably fair to assume that other large-screened phones don't fit comfortably in women's' jeans pockets either - an informal study published by data journalism website <a href="https://pudding.cool/2018/08/pockets/">The Pudding</a> in 2018 found that the pockets in women's' jeans are 48% shorter and 6.5% narrower than mens pockets. </p><p>The Fold, when closed, is also surprisingly comfortable to use for making phone calls since its not as wide as most of today's smartphones. Its elongated shape feels similar to that of a landline phone, making it feel natural to hold up to the ear. </p><p>As much of an engineering marvel as the Fold may be (screen issues aside), there are some aspects of the design that can make it a challenge to use. It's not easy to close with one hand, for example, and I often find myself accidentally covering the speaker when holding it in landscape mode as a tablet. I also unintentionally tapped the Bixby key when opening and closing the device quickly on occasion. Because the tablet screen is larger and wider than that of the average smartphone, it's nearly impossible to type or navigate apps with one hand. </p><h2>User Experience </h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>If you're not quite sure what to do with a phone that has two screens - including one that's abnormally large - the Fold has a feature to help you put that extra screen real estate to good use. The 7.3-inch tablet screen is capable of running three apps at a time, a capability that's not entirely new for the company. Samsung has long offered the ability to run two apps at once in split-screen mode on certain Galaxy phones, so it makes sense to see an evolution of this feature on an even bigger device like the Fold. </p><p>It's certainly a useful feature, but not one that I found myself taking advantage of particularly often - simply because I don't even use split-screen mode on other Samsung phones, and developing new habits takes time. But there are definitely a few use cases that I found to be convenient.</p><p>For example, I was able to launch Slack and then swipe in from the right to pull up my work email at the same time, allowing me to make sure I didn't miss anything on my commute home with just two quick gestures. After checking an email about an upcoming meeting, I was able to then swipe in from the right and launch Google Maps to see where that meeting was while keeping my email and work chat up on screen.</p><p>It's helpful, but in my experience, the best way to make the most of the Fold's massive screen is to dedicate all of it to a game or movie, or to split it in half for some quick multitasking. </p><p>Because the Galaxy Fold is designed to be opened and closed - as its name implies - many apps translate seamlessly between phone and tablet mode. This worked well when I opened apps like Google Maps, Facebook, Google Chrome, Gmail, and "Asphalt 9." Even apps that don't technically support this continuity feature will remain open when you unfold the device. When reading an article in Business Insider's app, for example, the app remained open but reverted back to the main page rather than the story when I opened the device. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Given its large display, the fact that the Galaxy Fold does not come with or support Samsung's S Pen stylus feels like a missed opportunity. I could imagine the Fold being useful for jotting down notes or sketching considering its 7.3-inch screen provides an even larger canvas than the Galaxy Note 9's 6.4-inch display.</p><p>But Samsung typically reserves the S Pen for its Note devices only. Plus, the display technology used for the Fold is completely different than that of Samsung's other phones, so it would likely take some additional engineering to get the S Pen to work. Samsung developed a new foldable adhesive and fabrication process not found on its other devices for The Fold's screen that makes it nearly 50% thinner than the typical smartphone display.</p><h2>Battery and Performance</h2><p>The Galaxy Fold may have a larger display than any other smartphone, but it also has impressive battery life to back it up. The Fold's 4,380mAh dual battery lasted for <em>two entire days</em> - not just the work day, but from the moment I left my home in morning to just before I went to sleep.</p><p>That's certainly more battery life than I typically get from most of the smartphones I review, which can usually get me through about a day and a half depending on how I'm using them. Battery life will always vary depending on how you use your smartphone, and during my time with the Fold, I used it for checking Facebook and Instagram, sending messages, browsing the web, reading, watching Netflix, and playing games like "Asphalt 9" and "South Park: Phone Destroyer" with the brightness set to less than half.</p><p>The Galaxy Fold runs on a 7-nanometer 64-bit octacore processor and has 12GB of RAM, ensuring that it's plenty powerful enough to run multiple apps at a time. I didn't notice any stutter or lag when running multiple apps, or when playing power-hungry games like "Asphalt 9."</p><h2> Camera</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The size and shape of the Galaxy Fold's inner screen gives the phone a much larger viewfinder for taking photos than any other smartphone I've used. I often unfolded the device to take pictures since it can be difficult to see details on the phone's small cover screen. (That's also true when using the front-facing camera, so don't plan on being inconspicuous when taking selfies with the Fold). While the Fold provides a larger perspective for framing up your shots, it's also much less subtle than snapping a photo with a conventional smartphone and often requires the use of both hands. </p><p>In terms of camera quality, you can expect results that are very similar to those of the Galaxy S10. The main camera system located on the back of the phone consists of a 16-megapixel, ultra-wide-angle lens, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens for zooming, as does Samsung's flagship smartphone. That means the Fold is capable of taking photos with a wider field of view than most phones and can achieve a digital zoom of up to 10x. The Fold's camera can stand up to competitors, too: in a side-by-side comparison, photos taken on the Fold were just as vibrant, colorful, and detailed as those shot on the iPhone XS Max.</p><p>There's a 10-megapixel front-facing camera on the Fold's cover and a second 10-megapixel camera above the tablet's screen when the phone is unfolded. So it's possible to snap a selfie whether the phone is open or shut, although I almost always found it easier to take photos with the phone unfolded. </p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>With the Galaxy Fold, Samsung has proven that foldable smartphone designs aren't just for aesthetics or a marketing ploy, there's an actual utility behind them. If Samsung set out to create a device that can truly serve as a phone and a tablet, it's certainly achieved that with the Fold.</p><p>But that doesn't mean you should buy it. The Fold is a promising glimpse at where smartphones are headed, but it's also clearly a first attempt. For a device like the Fold to truly be worth the money and time you're investing in it, Samsung needs to prove the screen malfunctions that plagued some review units are no longer a problem.</p><p>It's also unclear how durable the phone will be over a prolonged period of time, since reviewers have only been using them for less than a week. Buyers will have to simply trust Samsung's word that the device will withstand 200,000 folds and unfolds even despite the issues that have emerged so far. This is why being first isn't always best, although if and when foldable phones do catch on Samsung will likely be remembered as having paved the way as it did with phablets. </p><p>But perhaps most importantly, the benefits that come with having a giant screen you can fold and stuff in your pocket likely aren't worth the near-$2,000 price for most people. That's more expensive than purchasing a smartphone and a tablet separately, and it's pricier than some laptops. Samsung knows this too, which is why it's marketing the phone as a luxury product. </p><p>My experience gives me confidence that we'll one day see foldable phones with more durable designs that are less expensive as well as more attractive and practical to use.
