Rebel Foods is currently managing around 45 cloud kitchens brands that serve from Chinese to Indian to desserts through delivery platforms like Zomato and Swiggy. They also have their own delivery app. The Mumbai-based startup plans to use this funding to expand its presence worldwide, build better technology and add more brands to its plate. The company currently operates 450 cloud kitchens across 10 countries — Indonesia, United Arab Emirates and United Kingdom. It claims to have an annualised sale of $150 million this year and moving steadily towards profitability. “The food-tech space has evolved towards better personalisation, innovation and complete transparency. We are excited to welcome QIA, which has a track record of being a long-term supportive investor,” Ravi Golani, chief strategy officer of Rebel Foods, said in a statement. Rebel Foods is the first cloud kitchen startup to enter the unicorn club. Even Swiggy and Zomato have announced their plans to make a segway into these domains, but there hasn’t been any development in this regard so far. The acquisition, which could be valued at $50-60 million according to ETtech, will mark Oyo’s entry in the food space. Freshmenu, as a cloud kitchen startup (accepts only online delivery), has its own kitchens and delivery. Since its launch in 2014, the startup has gone on to have over <a href="https://yourstory.com/2019/01/freshmenu-funding-lightspeed-ventures">27</a> kitchens across Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi. In November, <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/startups/freshmenu-revenues-jump-72-to-rs-122-3-cr-even-as-losses-remain-flat-in-fy18/66868516">ETtech</a> reported that Freshmenu had seen a jump in its revenues to 72% at ₹122.3 crore in FY18 compared with ₹71 crore in FY17. Oyo and Freshmenu have a common investor – Lightspeed Venture Partners – and <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/oyo-rooms-may-invest-in-freshmenu-to-enter-food-delivery-business-3571111.html">reportedly</a>, it is Lightspeed that has brought the two startups together. Oyo Rooms has big ambitions – it wants to become the world’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/former-indigo-chief-is-aiming-to-make-the-6-year-old-oyo-the-worlds-largest-hotel-chain/articleshow/67536612.cms">biggest</a> hotel chain in the next two years. Introducing F&amp;B services will help the hospitality chain to offer more to its consumers. Meanwhile, Freshmenu works with Zomato and Swiggy and receives most of its orders from the two platforms. The hospitality startup Oyo had turned into a unicorn in 2018 after it received a funding of $800 million at a valuation of $5 billion. It has also made a mark globally in China, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and is even considering entering the big league with its entry into the US markets. Uber, the cab aggregator service from San Francisco, is all set to bring <keyword id="2960214" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ubereats">UberEATS</keyword> in India in the second quarter of the year, and has already started bringing restaurant partners on board.

On-demand food aggregator industry in India is currently seeing its major companies, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/swiggy-reveals-what-people-are-eating-in-indian-cities/articleshow/56755802.cms">Swiggy </a>and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/march-saw-zomato-processing-2-million-online-orders-with-23-mom-growth/articleshow/57942655.cms">Zomato</a>, looking to strengthen their businesses with additional capital. Not only this, Google has also launched its hyperlocal services and food delivery app Areo, operational in Bengaluru and Mumbai, which passes on the leads from customers to partners like Faaso's, Freshmenu, and UrbanClap etc. 
 
UberEATS will have a different team from the one managing Uber cabs at national and city levels. The hiring for city general managers, city-level restaurant operations managers as well as branding and sales heads across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai and Gurugram has already begun.

UberEATS is all set to debut in India

(Eds: Updates with order withdrawn) New Delhi, Mar 26 () Hours after allowing several online retail firms to re-start their delivery services, the Delhi police on Thursday withdrew its previous order with "immediate effect", officials said.The police had issued a statement directing its personnel to allow persons and vehicles engaged in essential services to operate in Delhi and listed names of retailers and online delivery services that should be allowed to function.However, the order was withdrawn with immediate effect hours after it was issued, stating that the revised guidelines will be released and all traffic, picket and beat staff would be briefed accordingly.The police did not cite any reason for withdrawing its previous order, but a senior police official said essential supplies would continue and a uniform order across states would be issued soon.This comes a day after the Delhi police held a meeting with representatives of e-commerce platforms to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential goods and services during the 21-day lockdown enforced to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.Zomato, Flipkart, Amazon, 24Seven, Blue Dart, DTDC, Wow Express, Swiggy, Grofers, BigBasket, MilkBaasket, Dunzo, Big Bazaar, Snapdeal, Licious, Medlife, Pharmeasy, UrbanClap, Ninjacart, Honsa Conumer Pvt. Delhi police withdraws order allowing online retail firms to re-start services

<ul><li>The new guidelines by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India state that restaurants will have to mention the calorific values on menu cards, boards or booklets. </li><li>Food aggregators like Zomato or Swiggy too have to comply with these new rules.</li><li>However, restaurant owners feel that this move is “uncalled for,” especially since it comes at a time when they are already struggling to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.</li><li>While they are being introduced in India for the first time, similar laws already exist in countries like the US and the UK. </li></ul>Fast-food chains like McDonald’s, KFC, <keyword id="33542" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Burger-King">Burger King</keyword> have already been forced to follow “calorie labelling” in several countries, including the US, and now they might have to add the numbers on their menus in India as well. The new guidelines issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (<keyword id="154680" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="FSSAI">FSSAI</keyword>) state that restaurants or cafes with a central license or with more than ten outlets will have to mention the calorific values on menu cards, boards, or booklets. “Additionally, reference information on calorie requirements shall also be displayed clearly and prominently as an average active adult requires 2,000 kcal energy per day, however, calorie needs may vary”, said the guidelines. While players like Rebel Foods, the cloud kitchen company which operates chains like Faasos, Behrouz Biryani has always sworn by quoting the calorific value and defining the contents of the food served, as a customer-first approach, many other restaurant chains like Mamagoto, Chaayos, Wow Momos among others could soon have to deal with the calorie fight. Will people come, read the calorie count and then leave the restaurant? Or instead of butter chicken they are going to order a salad?,” Kohli told Business Insider. The FHRAI has already written to the FSSAI, giving its inputs regarding the new guidelines. While Kohli said that he doesn’t disagree with the norms, it shouldn’t come as a mandate. “If the FSSAI wants to do this, it should be voluntary. In a period where we are already hit so badly, putting up these new norms… I would call it irrelevant,” said Kohli. Pradeep Shetty, the Sr Vice President of The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India said, “The intention of the FSSAI is noble, they want to bring down the trans fat. They don’t want India to go the way many western countries have. They aren’t prohibiting people from eating, but just to make an informed decision.” The standardization could still work for restaurants with a limited standard menu across the country – chains like McDonald’s, KFC, Dominos, among others. But it’s not going to be the same story for the very ‘Indian’ restaurants. Restaurants in India don’t have just one problem with the new labelling guidelines – in fact, the issues are going to be multifold. Kohli explained that having the new labelling guidelines means printed new menu cards leading to new marketing expenses, which are uncalled for. Moreover, the food at Indian restaurants is more often than not customised, which means customers have demands like “extra butter” or “make it with olive oil”. “That addition or deletion of butter makes all the difference in the calorific value. What we fear is more harassment for a sector that is already harassed,” he said. Counting the calories: The new global norm? Placing the calorie count on menu cards isn’t just a norm being introduced in India. It is already enforced in countries like the US and the UK as a measure to control obesity, albeit questionably. In fact, in the US a law was passed in 2018 that stated that any restaurant with 20 or more outlets will have to state the calorie count of its food items. Researchers at the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University and Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/news/the-us-law-requiring-calorie-counts-on-menus-is-expected-to-save-tens-of-thousands-of-lives-and-over-10-billion-in-healthcare-costs-research-shows/articleshow/76324413.cms">conducted a study</a> that showed that such a move would produce $10-14 billion in healthcare cost savings and another $3-5 billion in societal cost savings. In India too, many brands have been following the standard of adding calorie count on menus even before it was a norm. “The customer today wants to know what they are consuming, how safe it is, where the produce came from, and so forth. To help with all these, it becomes essential for brands to help consumers with the required information, to keep their faith in the food they consume, and thereby, the brand. This will also develop cautious brand building practices across the board, guaranteeing quality output,” said Sagar Kochhar, Co-founder, Rebel Foods. While the policy has a long way to go, it poses another problem as well – how will the government keep a check on restaurants across the country. “That also means that restaurants will have to hire an expert to keep a check or define the calorie count, which is another added expense,” said Shetty. Cupertino, June 16 (IANS) Apple App Store facilitated $519 billion in commerce and sales globally in 2019 and more than 85 per cent of the $519 billion total accrues solely to third-party developers and businesses of all sizes, a new study by Apple has revealed. The new study, conducted by independent economists at Analysis Group, found that the highest value categories were mobile commerce (m-commerce) apps, digital goods and services apps, and in-app advertising. "The App Store is a place where innovators and dreamers can bring their ideas to life, and users can find safe and trusted tools to make their lives better," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement late Monday. "In a challenging and unsettled time, the App Store provides enduring opportunities for entrepreneurship, health and well-being, education, and job creation, helping people adapt quickly to a changing world," he added. Of the $519 billion, the study found that sales from physical goods and services accounted for the largest share, at $413 billion. Within that category, m-commerce apps generated the vast majority of sales, and of those, retail was the largest, at $268 billion. "Retail apps include those that digitally represent brick-and-mortar stores such as Target and Best Buy, as well as virtual marketplaces that sell physical goods, such as Flipkart, Lenskart and Myntra but do not include grocery delivery, which is its own category," the findings showed. Travel apps, including Ixigo, Cleartrip and Makemytrip, accounted for $57 billion. Ride-hailing apps, including Ola Cabs, comprised $40 billion in sales, and food delivery apps, including Zomato, Swiggy and Freshmenu, made up $31 billion. Billings and sales from digital goods and services comprised $61 billion, and this category included apps for music and video streaming, fitness, education, ebooks and audiobooks, news and magazines, and dating services, among others. Games, the type of app most downloaded in 2019, was the largest generator of billings and sales within this category. In-app advertising sales accounted for $45 billion, and of that, 44 per cent was derived from games. Non-gaming apps that generate substantial in-app advertising sales are often free to download and use, such as Twitter and Pinterest, though others also offer in-app purchases to access content, such as The New York Times. Launched in 2008, App Store is currently home to almost 2 million apps and visited by half a billion people each week across 175 countries. "We're committed to doing even more to support and nurture the global App Store community  from one-developer shops in nearly every country to businesses that employ thousands of workers  as it continues to foster innovation, create jobs, and propel economic growth for the future," said Cook. According to the study, the direct payments made to developers from Apple are only a fraction of the vast total when sales from other sources, such as physical goods and services, are calculated.
