On a like-for-like basis, i.e., excluding the impact of the acquisition of <keyword id="19898109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Paytm" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Paytm">Paytm</keyword>'s ticketing business, the GOV growth stood at 53% YoY. However, the company's <keyword id="19942166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-profit" source="keywords">net profit</keyword> skyrocketed, jumping by 389% YoY. For the quarter ended September 30, 2024, Zomato's net profit stood at Rs 176 crore, significantly up from the Rs 36 crore level in the year-ago period. Blinkit's gross order value (GOV) also saw a 122% year-on-year increase to Rs 6,132 crore. Blinkit saw massive improvements on almost all operational metrics. The average order value jumped from Rs 607 in the year-ago period to Rs 660 in Q2 FY25. The average GOV per day per store also inched up from 757 in Q2FY24 to 981 in Q2FY25. Similarly, orders also skyrocketed from 45.5 million in the year-ago period to 92.9 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2024. As for Zomato's <keyword id="20299302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-delivery" source="keywords">food delivery</keyword> business, the average monthly transacting users also inched up from 18.4 million in Q2 FY24 to 20.7 million in Q2 FY25. The results did not do much to move Zomato's stock on the bourses, which fell by 3.44% during the day to close at Rs 256.55.

The company's PAT (profit after tax) stood at Rs 930 crore. Notably, without this windfall gain, Paytm's finances would still be in red, with the company racking up losses worth Rs 415 crore. Paytm was in red in the year-ago period as well, incurring losses worth Rs 290.5 crore. This windfall profit also improved Paytm's EBITDA by Rs 388 crore on a QoQ basis. The company's revenue also saw a slight uptick of 10.5% quarterly to Rs 1,659 crore, as opposed to Rs 1,501 crore in the previous quarter. But on a year-on-year basis, Paytm's revenue dipped significantly by 34%. The company also announced that it has entered into a DLG (<keyword id="23641220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Default-Loss-Guarantee" source="keywords">default loss guarantee</keyword>) model for its merchant loans of about Rs 225 crore with SMFG India Credit. Under this arrangement, Paytm will be first in line to take a hit in case of a loss that emerges from borrowers defaulting or skipping their payments. "Following the regulatory framework and the emerging market practice, we see increased willingness from lenders to partner and allocate more capital in the default loss. The DLG model will help to increase disbursements with the existing partners and expand partnerships with new lenders for the loan distribution,” said the company in its earnings release today. The company's revenue from its payment business also inched up 9% on a quarterly basis, along with its revenue from <keyword id="19976433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-services" source="keywords">financial services</keyword>, which also grew by 34% QoQ. At present, Paytm's total merchant subscriptions stand at 1.12 crore, with the company garnering 3 lakh new merchants during the quarter. During the previous quarter, Paytm's <keyword id="20253122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gross-merchandise-value" source="keywords">gross merchandise value</keyword> (GMV) also inched up by 5% on a sequential basis, which experts anticipate will continue in the coming quarters, just as India braces for the festive season. Per its release, Paytm aims to achieve <keyword id="23641219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EBITDA-profitability" source="keywords">EBITDA profitability</keyword> (before ESOPs) by the fourth quarter of this financial year. However, investors remained unimpressed with Paytm's performance, with its share slipping by around 3.96% during the day to trade at Rs 697.20. Paytm's entertainment ticketing business covers movies, sports, and events (live performances). The boards of Zomato and One 97 Communications Ltd (OCL) have approved the all-cash deal. As part of this agreement, OCL's entertainment ticketing business will transfer business to its 100 per cent subsidiaries Orbgen Technologies Pvt Ltd (OTPL) and Wasteland Entertainment Pvt Ltd (WEPL), followed by the sale of 100 per cent stake in these subsidiaries (which operate the TicketNew and Insider platforms) to Zomato. Subsequently, Zomato will spin off the new business into a new app called 'District'. Under the deal, Zomato will fully acquire Orbgen Technologies Pvt Ltd (OTPL), which is into movie ticketing, for Rs 1,264.6 crore and buy Wasteland Entertainment Pvt Ltd, which is into events ticketing for Rs 783.8 crore. The combined entertainment ticketing business has a scale of Rs 297 crore in revenue and Rs 29 crore in adjusted EBITDA in FY24. "The transfer will also include around 280 existing employees from the entertainment ticketing business," OCL said in a statement, adding that the transaction generates significant profits for Paytm and cash proceeds will further strengthen the balance sheet. Announcing the deal, Paytm said it allows the fintech to strengthen its focus on core payments and financial services distribution. Paytm said with its strong focus on long-term value creation, the company remains confident in substituting revenue from its entertainment ticketing business by expanding core business areas of payments and financial service distribution. "This move allows us to continue focusing on long-term growth in our core areas and value creation for all stakeholders," a Paytm spokesperson said. On the other hand, Zomato Managing Director and CEO <keyword id="19901325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deepinder-goyal" source="keywords">Deepinder Goyal</keyword> in a letter to shareholders said, "The proposed acquisition helps us add more scale and offer newer use-cases (like movie and sports ticketing) to our customers in this segment". Zomato believes the deal makes it more relevant to its customers and gives an opportunity to spin off the business into a new app. "We are going to call it District, which could be a game changer for each of these use cases given the need for a single brand as a destination in this segment," Goyal added. Zomato is keen to position 'District' as the brand that consumers turn to when they are thinking of going out, he added. OTPL was incorporated on November 23, 2007, in India. It is in the business of listing and sale of movie tickets and other services. It had a turnover of Rs 13.14 crore in the fiscal ended March 31, 2024. WEPL was incorporated on December 21, 2015. It is in the business of listing and sale of event tickets and other services. Its turnover in the FY24 was Rs 236.03 crore. Paytm said the move to sell its entertainment ticketing business underscores its core focus on payments and financial services distribution. "In recent quarters, the company has also expanded its offerings in insurance, equity broking, and wealth distribution, with a significant opportunity to cross-sell these services and grow its market presence as a leading financial services distribution player," Paytm said. During a transition period (up to 12 months), the movie and event tickets will continue to be available on the Paytm app, as well as on the TicketNew and Insider platforms, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted experience for users and merchant partners. Paytm said the deal underscores its success in building businesses and creating value for shareholders. Zomato's Goyal said the District app is expected to be launched anytime in the next few weeks. Post this acquisition, he said Zomato's going-out business would be spread across multiple different platforms. Its existing going-out business (dining-out + event ticketing) would continue to run on the Zomato app, and the acquired business -- movie, sports and event ticketing -- would continue to run on Paytm's main app for a transition period of up to 12 months, along with Insider and TicketNew apps. Both of these would get transferred to Zomato as part of the transaction. District app will duplicate the offerings above and over time, we will gradually nudge our customers to move from the Zomato, Paytm, Insider, and TicketNew apps to the District app. "Once most customers start transacting on the District app, we will remove the duplication and shut down this business on all the other apps. Eventually, there will just be a button to launch the District app on the Zomato app (like it is for Blinkit today) so that we continue to tap into the large customer base of Zomato," he added.

On August 21, the Deepinder Goyal-led company entered into definitive agreements for the acquisition of Paytm's entertainment arms. In its stock exchange filing on August 21, Noida-based Paytm had also confirmed the development. The deal, valued at Rs 2,048 crores on a cash-free, debt-free basis, stands "as a testament to the value" Paytm has created through its entertainment ticketing business, bringing choice and convenience to millions of Indians with its services and scale, the company said in a release filed with exchanges. As part of this agreement, OCL will transfer its entertainment ticketing business to Zomato by transferring OCL's entertainment ticketing business to its 100 per cent subsidiaries, Orbgen Technologies Pvt Limited (OTPL) and Wasteland Entertainment Pvt Ltd (WEPL) and selling a 100 per cent stake in its subsidiaries OTPL and WEPL, which operate the TicketNew and Insider platforms, respectively to Zomato. As per the information provided by the fintech, about 280 existing employees from the entertainment ticketing business will be part of Zomato. Paytm had said that the company wants to focus on the payments and financial services distribution segment. During a transition period (up to 12 months), the movie and event tickets will continue to be available on the Paytm app, as well as on the TicketNew and Insider platforms, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted experience for users and merchant partners. As per Paytm, the company built movie ticketing from the ground up and acquired TicketNew and Insider for a total consideration of Rs 268 crores from 2017 to 2018. Further, additional investments were also made to scale up the business. On Wednesday, after the announcement, the stocks of Zomato opened in green at Rs 256.20. Not really </h2>It is impossible to overlook the sheer number of public offerings seen in the Indian markets over the past 2 years. Around 600 share sale offers have already hit the market since 2023. Out of these, 335 have come in this year, as of October 2024. While over Rs 50,000 crores have been raised by these share sales so far since 2023, only 22% of these funds raises have come from companies who are hitting the market for the first time i.e. bringing out their IPOs. The rest have come from already listed companies seeking to raise more funds. The biggest IPO that India has seen to date, that of <keyword id="19906087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hyundai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> Motor India, closes for subscription today. With an offer size of Rs 27,870.16 crore, it is 35% bigger than the previous biggest IPO in the country(LIC in May 2022). As of 12:30 pm today, Hyundai's offer had been 87% subscribed, with significant interest from QIBs and employees. At 0.43x, participation of retail investors remained largely subdued. Notably, an IPO is considered cancelled and withdrawn, if it fails to meet the 90% subscription threshold.

In a block deal, 3.4 per cent equity (or 2.1 crore shares) of <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword>'s parent company One97 <keyword id="4584578" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="communications-ltd" source="Orion">Communications Ltd</keyword> (OCL) changed hands on Friday. Sources in the know of the development say that Chinese multinational Alibaba has sold its entire stake in Paytm in today's block deal. With this sale, Alibaba is no longer a stakeholder in Paytm. The company had sold around 3.1 per cent of 6.26 per cent equity in Paytm in January. This latest deal almost completes Alibaba's exit from <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> since it had earlier sold its stakes in <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> and <keyword id="964794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bigbasket" source="Orion">BigBasket</keyword>. The news will bring cheer to the market as it ends the Chinese stakeholding in the homegrown Paytm. Paytm's shares have been rallying in the last few days since it announced operating profitability in its Q3FY23 results with EBITDA before ESOP cost at Rs 31 crore, significantly ahead of its guidance of September 2023. The fintech giant revenue from operations increased to Rs 2,062 crore (no <keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword> incentive recorded this quarter), a growth of 42 per cent on a yearly basis. This was followed by Paytm's robust operating update of January 2023 that it filed with the stock exchange on February 8. The company has continued to witness sustained growth momentum in its key payments and lending business. Paytm strengthened its leadership in offline payments with the deployment of 6.1 million devices while its average MTU at 89 million registered a 29 per cent growth for the month of January 2023. Chinese multinational Alibaba exits India, sells its entire stake in Paytm

They are in the spotlight yet again, after their mixed performance during the December quarter. Fintech companies like Paytm and PB Fintech have not only reported better than expected earnings but also narrowed their losses significantly. Zomato and Nykaa did not deliver overall improvement in financials, but analysts remain optimistic. Another new age company among talks is hyperlocal delivery startup Dunzo with elevated losses and massive valuation. Billionaire and chairperson of RPG Group highlighted the financials of the company <a href="https://twitter.com/hvgoenka/status/1625843597626183680">in a tweet </a>on February 15. “New age digital stocks are not doing great primarily because the market is not doing great. India is underperforming this year with a negative 2.34 % return YTD while markets like China, HongKong and South Korea are doing very well. When India’s underperformance changes, new age digital companies also will start performing. Some results from this segment are very good like Paytm. Zomato also has done reasonably well, but Nykaa’s results came below expectations,” said Dr V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services. New age technology companies have been under the scanner because of the massive underperformance in their share prices due to elevated valuation. The growth was driven by pick up in merchant subscription revenues and loan distribution. “Biggest surprise is distribution business, control of cashbacks, opex,” said Macquarie in a report. Shares of the company rose nearly 22% from February 3 when it reported its quarterly earnings. Macquarie has upgraded rating on the company’s stock to ‘Outperform’ from ‘Underperform’ with a target price of ₹800. “PayTM has positively surprised on the distribution of financial services revenue by a wide margin and has also managed to control overall expenses and charges. At the time of listing, profit and free cash flow were not even a part of management’s discussion. However, we see a very visible change in approach of management to deliver profit, evidenced, we believe, by the core EBIDTA profitability that was reported recently,” said Macquarie in a report. Zomato: A promising road to profitability Zomato reported better than expected Q3 FY23 revenues, and analysts believe it may reach profitability by the end of the current financial year. “Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. “Zomato’s road to profitability has grown even more promising. Zomato (ex-quick commerce) clocked adj. EBITDA level profitability in the month of Jan-23. Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” added the report. Analysts say Zomato’s relaunch of its Gold membership plan should bring growth back. Most brokerage houses have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/no-long-tail-effect-zomato-banks-on-demand-recovery-in-future-even-as-it-shuts-operations-in-225-cities-on-poor-performance/articleshow/97907071.cms">maintained a ‘Buy’ rating </a>on the company’s stock. “The fact that most of these companies have put forth their strategy to cut down losses and become profitable in the near future builds hope for investors. For example, Zomato’s decision to cut operations in 225 smaller cities. Moreover, since most of these <keyword id="10951575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-age-tech-companies" source="Orion">new age tech companies</keyword> are direct consumer based there are expectations of inflation cooling down and boosting consumer spend.” Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research (retail) at Kotak Securities told Business Insider India. Nykaa: Premium valuation reflects solid outlook, say analysts Nykaa, reported a 70% on year decline in net profit in Q3 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/nykaas-stock-plunges-4-2-after-its-q3-net-profit-slips-70/articleshow/97901748.cms">missing analysts expectations</a>. Despite this, brokerages believe the best is yet to come for the company. During a post-earnings conference call Falguni Nayar, executive chairperson, MD and CEO of Nykaa said that although inflationary pressures were present, it wasn’t that big of an issue for many of Nykaa’s customers. Q3 is considered to be a seasonal quarter for the company because of the festive season and despite macro challenges Nykaa’s growth was applauded by analysts. “In a quarter rampaged by a tougher macroeconomic environment, Nykaa reported substantial growth in Q3FY23 numbers,” said a report by JM Financial. The brokerage firm has assigned a ‘Buy’ rating on the stock. “We continue to see increased strength of the dominant positioning in beauty and personal care (BPC) vertical while the newcomer, fashion vertical, has gained market share at the cost of a sharp dip in contribution margin,” added the report. Nykaa’s EBITDA margins came under pressure and fell to 5.3% in Q3, as against 6.3% in the same period last year. “While we expect Nykaa’s GMV growth, at 35% in FY23E-25E, to be the highest within our global ecommerce coverage, we believe Nykaa’s valuation premium (FY24 EV/GMV of 3.1x vs 0.5x median for peers) already reflects this solid growth outlook and Nykaa’s stronger margin profile,” said a report by Goldman Sachs. The investment banker has assigned a ‘Neutral’ rating on the stock. PB Fintech on course to profitability soon The December quarter performance of PB Fintech, the parent company of Policybazaar and Paisabazaar, was another surprise for investors as the company narrowed its losses significantly. Its insurance premiums jumped 70.3% on year to ₹30.3 billion driven by a strong showing across segments. “Given its market share of 90%-plus in online insurance sales and a growing offline presence, PB is poised to post strong sales,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. Further, the management expects revenue and margins to improve further as agent productivity rises and benefits of appointments channel are realised. They hinted at a sharp profitability uptick in Q4, say analysts. “This growth becomes even more impressive considering the seasonally weak Q3 for insurance, where new business premiums for life and general insurance declined QoQ by 19% and 12%, respectively,” said a report by JM Financial. New-age internet based businesses, like their unlisted peers, have been chalking out strategies that lead them towards profitability and are already on a growth path aided by their unique business propositions — allaying investor and analyst concerns. New age technology companies back in the spotlight after Q3 performance

The stock of this online retailer of beauty and fashion products slipped over 13% in the last five sessions. It has been plunging for the last six months, with a 45% fall during the period. Analysts believe that the recent correction is because of volatile market conditions ahead of the Union Budget, amid ongoing corporate earnings and weak cues from global markets that are urging investors to leave overvalued stocks. The list of such stocks also includes other new age companies like Zomato, Policybazaar and Paytm. “I don’t think that Nykaa’s fall in the last 5-6 sessions specifically has its own story. I believe the volatile market environment given we are also at a cusp of the Budget is leading to sharp correction in stocks that are overvalued. These include stocks like Nykaa which are not valued correctly and hence they tend to fall,” Neha Khanna, director at management consultancy firm ValPro, told Business Insider India. She added, “The situation is not specific to Nykaa, it is happening with other overvalued stocks as well like Zomato that also fell during the period. Such sudden falls have happened in the past as well.” Equity markets have been choppy and volatile this entire week, as investors have been reacting to the Q3 earnings, while factoring in budget expectations. Sensex gained 0.5% while Nifty50 went up just 0.28% in the last five days. In the last five sessions, Zomato and PB Fintech (Policybazaar) too slid by 6%. Meanwhile, Paytm has fallen 2%. An IPO lock-in period is a time span post listing during which pre-IPO investors are not eligible to sell their shares. The lock-in period of Nykaa ended on November 10. However, the fall in the company’s stock was limited as the board had announced a share bonus (5 shares for every 1 share held). The company is yet to release its December quarter earnings. “Apparently there is no particular reason for the sharp fall but factors like impending competition, December quarter numbers which may not be good, sell off by pre IPO investors, tired IPO investors selling are leading to sell off. Large scale companies are entering this space like RIL, Adani may also enter in some time. And the expectations that the topline may not be growing as they would have hoped could be another reason for fall,” said an analyst who did not wish to be named. Nykaa plunges to all-time low; analysts say overvalued stocks hit most during volatile markets

Combined, they have raked in almost ₹1 lakh crore (₹97,500 crore to be precise) via exits from 78 companies, as per a report by Nuvama. “The robust secondary market presented PE/VC firms with a golden opportunity for profitable exits, thanks to a consistent influx of flows, notably from domestic institutional investors (DIIs). Consequently, 2023 witnessed record-breaking PE/VC exits via secondary markets in India's equity history,” the report said. It also comes as no surprise that it’s the midcap companies that offered their investors easy and profitable exit options during the year. The cumulative midcap company exits were at ₹48,700 crore — which is half of the total exits. The next biggest chunk of exits came from small cap companies — at around 30% of the total — accounting to ₹29,700 crore. Large caps on the other hand saw exits to the tune of ₹19,200 crore. It needs to be mentioned that midcaps indices ran up by 47% during the year, and small caps by 56%. Nifty on other hand went up by 20%, eclipsed by the performance of these indices. As much as 83% of the deal amounts – that’s ₹81,200 crore were foreign investors like Softbank, Warburg Pincus, Baring Asia, Bain Capital and more. Softbank however saw the chunkiest of exits especially after the stocks of <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword>, <keyword id="11931339" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhivery" source="Orion">Delhivery</keyword>, PayTm, PB Fintech provided it with exit options. Warburg Pincus exited from companies like IDFC First Bank, Cams Services, Home First Finance, Kalyan Jewellers, Fusion Microfin and PVR Inox. Among India-dedicated funds, Fairfax Holdings, Blume Ventures, Lighthouse and Peak XV Partners exited their investments in small and midcap companies. The sector that saw the sharpest run-up during the year also provided its investors with the most exit moolah. Financials accounted for 45% of the total exits at ₹43,500 crore. Consumer discretionary came in second with ₹17,800 crore. IT also saw a good show of ₹12,400 crore thanks to the chunk deal of Baring Asia from Coforge. Healthcare and industrials came in next.
