This technological shift has redefined the relationship between Indians and their restaurant dining habits. But has it also influenced their <keyword id="19956891" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-choices" source="keywords">food choices</keyword> and <keyword id="21015159" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spending-patterns" source="keywords">spending patterns</keyword>? A new study from the University of South Florida hints at the possibility, highlighting how <keyword id="22470551" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-ordering" source="keywords">digital ordering</keyword> platforms significantly shape <keyword id="20347870" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-behaviour" source="keywords">consumer behaviour</keyword>, often leading to more indulgent food choices and higher spending. The study—co-authored by Dipayan Biswas, the USF Frank Harvey endowed professor of marketing in the Muma College of Business—examines the cognitive effects of ordering from digital screens compared to traditional methods like printed menus. The findings were published in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. “While digital ordering can enhance convenience and efficiency, many consumers will opt for unhealthier food choices and spend more. Notably, the digital menus included not just mobile apps, but also touchscreen kiosks and tabletop tablets available in some restaurants for self-service. They reviewed over 23,000 orders from various establishments, ranging from independent restaurants to a major global dining chain with 1,000 locations across 23 countries. Food items were categorised as unhealthy, neutral or healthy. Unhealthy items were defined by portion size and type, such as fried foods and desserts, while vegetables and fish were considered healthy. Neutral items included most soups, large salads and steaks under six ounces. It also revealed that digital menus have a stronger impact on dinner choices, as consumers are more likely to be tired and reliant on technology later in the day. Consequently, digital ordering has less influence during breakfast and lunch. “Digital ordering modes foster a more automatic decision-making process with lower cognitive involvement. This is because digital tools encourage people to rely less on their cognitive resources and more on automated processes,” Biswas explained. This phenomenon, known as the ‘Google Effect’, implies that the availability of digital tools alters how people store and retrieve information, and even put in less cognitive effort overall. This is evident in tasks such as storing contact numbers instead of remembering them or navigating using GPS. He also aims to explore how the presence of a human, such as during in-person or phone orders, might influence consumer decisions, as opposed to the perceived anonymity of online environments.

Online food delivery platform <keyword id="19901323" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="keywords">Zomato</keyword> on Thursday announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary <keyword id="20332565" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato-payments-private-limited" source="keywords">Zomato Payments Private Limited</keyword> (<keyword id="20332941" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zppl" source="keywords">ZPPL</keyword>) has been granted a certificate of authorisation from the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>) to operate as an '<keyword id="20332942" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-payment-aggregator" source="keywords">Online Payment Aggregator</keyword>'. The authorisation came into effect from January 24. "We wish to inform that ZPPL has been granted a certificate of authorisation dated January 24, 2024, from the RBI to operate as an 'Online Payment Aggregator' in India with effect from January 24, 2024, as per the guidelines issued by the RBI," Zomato said in an exchange filing. With this, Zomato Payments has expanded its role beyond food delivery and restaurant discovery into the realm of digital payments. Apart from this recent development, Zomato had partnered with ICICI Bank last year to introduce its own unified payments interface (<keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi" source="keywords">UPI</keyword>), Zomato UPI. Earlier this month, Zomato introduced a new feature called "daily payouts" to support emerging restaurant partners. Currently, the feature will be available for restaurant partners who receive 100 or fewer orders a month, according to the company. "Our discussions with various restaurant partners highlighted the financial challenges smaller eateries face, using the traditional weekly payout system. This feature is designed to address this critical need for more frequent access to earnings," Zomato said in a blogpost.
