Anticipating a rise in food orders, Zomato has hiked the platform fee from ₹6 to ₹10 and has renamed it to the “Festive season platform fee”.<br /><br />“This fee helps us pay our bills to keep Zomato running. Now, the platform fee has been increased to ₹10, marking a five-fold increase in just a year.<br /><br />The platform fee is different from other charges levied on orders such as GST, delivery charges and restaurant charges. Customers are required to pay this charge irrespective of Zomato Gold membership.<br /><br />Zomato recently approved a fundraising of ₹8,500 crore via a qualified institutional placement (QIP). This is aimed at boosting its cash reserves after its recent acquisition of ticketing business from Paytm.<br /><br /><h2>Zomato share price surges</h2>Zomato’s share price increased by 2.3% on Wednesday after the increase in platform fees. The company’s shares were trading at ₹262.25 at 11:50. Think Initial Public Offers (IPOs) are a sure-shot, quickfire method to make a quick buck? If so, then investing in some of India's biggest IPOs to date would have created multiple millionaires. However, if the data is to be believed, 18 out of India's top 30 IPOs by way of size have failed to deliver on the returns front. <br /><br />Recent data from Capitalmind PMS suggests that of all the mega IPOs India has seen in the past 2 decades, only 12 IPOs i.e. stocks of 12 companies have delivered more returns that what you would have received, had you bought and held your investments in Nifty500(which invests in biggest 500 companies by market size). <br /><br />Infact, Paytm (54%), <keyword id="20024191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Power" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reliance Power" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reliance Power">Reliance Power</keyword> (81%), General Insurance Corporation (2%) actually generated negative total returns to date. The only outliers in the list of top 10 IPOs were Zomato (listed in July 2021) and Coal India (listed in April, 2010), which managed to generate excess returns i.e. more than what was generated by Nifty500. <br /><br />While Zomato's total return to date, which is considered a comprehensive gauge of a stock's profitability, stands at 265%, Coal India total returns are a massive 443%. In these cases, had you simply bought and held the Nifty500 index for a similar duration, your returns would've been 73%, and 435% respectively. <br /><br />Also, 5 of the biggest IPOs India has ever seen (Bajaj Housing Finance, Bharti Hexacom, Brainbees, Ola Electric) have come in the last 2 years.<br /><br />In some cases, having stayed put in your index investments would have yielded you far better returns. Consider this, FSN E-Commerce, Nykaa's parent company, listed on the exchanges on November 2021. Its total returns till date have been 2%, while had you invested in Nifty500 index, your returns would've been 53%. Similarly, the total returns to date on Bandhan Bank's stock, which listed in March 2018, was a negative 43%. Not really <br /></h2>It is impossible to overlook the sheer number of public offerings seen in the Indian markets over the past 2 years. Around 600 share sale offers have already hit the market since 2023. Out of these, 335 have come in this year, as of October 2024. While over Rs 50,000 crores have been raised by these share sales so far since 2023, only 22% of these funds raises have come from companies who are hitting the market for the first time i.e. bringing out their IPOs. The rest have come from already listed companies seeking to raise more funds.<br /><br />The biggest IPO that India has seen to date, that of <keyword id="19906087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hyundai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> Motor India, closes for subscription today. With an offer size of Rs 27,870.16 crore, it is 35% bigger than the previous biggest IPO in the country(LIC in May 2022). <br /><br />As of 12:30 pm today, Hyundai's offer had been 87% subscribed, with significant interest from QIBs and employees. At 0.43x, participation of retail investors remained largely subdued.  <br /><br />Notably, an IPO is considered cancelled and withdrawn, if it fails to meet the 90% subscription threshold.<br />

Do large IPOs guarantee large returns? Data suggests that 18 of India's biggest 30 IPOs did not generate solid returns

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Jeff Strabone commutes from Brooklyn to Connecticut College by train for his professor job.</li><li>Strabone prefers public transportation, avoids driving, and uses train time for work tasks.</li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Jeff Strabone, an English professor who commutes from Brooklyn, New York, to New London, Connecticut, for work. The following has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>My family has lived continuously in New York City for over 100 years. I've never lived anywhere else, and I'm planning to die here. I've lived in the same Brooklyn apartment, which I own, for the past 20 years.</p><p>There's so much I love about this city, from the museums to the restaurants and the public transportation. I <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/live-car-free-lifestyle-outside-nyc-culdesac-tempe-arizona-2024-6">don't have a driver's license</a> and will never get one. I ride my bike, walk, or take the subway everywhere I need to go.</p><p>Things got complicated in 2010 when I took a job as a professor at Connecticut College. It was the best position available at the time that was still within commuting distance.</p><p>Since then, I've gone to campus in person two or three days a week and do non-classroom work (like faculty meetings) over Zoom from my apartment.</p><p>The distance from my apartment in Cobble Hill to the campus is about 130 miles. While driving there could take two and a half to three hours, I take the train instead. The supercommute from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-the-old-penn-station-before-it-was-demolished-2017-5">Penn Station</a> to campus and back takes about five hours each day, and it's seven when you include the subway and taxi.</p><p>I love my job. Even though that seems like a long ride, I don't mind.</p><h2 id="39d897d3-7585-4234-a456-88577d95be5d"><strong>I bike, train, and taxi to get to work</strong></h2><p>My schedule clusters all of my classes on the same two days, so I only have to go to the college two or three times a week, depending on additional in-person meetings or events.</p><p>I leave my apartment at 7:30 a.m. and walk to the subway station. I take two subway lines to Penn Station and have time to spare before my 8:30 a.m. train to New London. The ride is usually two and a half hours, and I get to New London around 11:10 a.m.</p><p>I call ahead for a taxi and get to campus by 11:40 a.m. I have lunch, do some more work, and teach my first class at 1:15 p.m. My classes are back-to-back and end at 4 p.m.</p><p>At the end of the day I walk about two miles to the train station in New London because I like to avoid car travel whenever possible. Then I take the train back to Penn Station. Sometimes, I see friends or go out in the city that night rather than go straight home.</p><h2 id="692981c9-2d7b-4422-856c-fcc0954e6464"><strong>Amtrak is my office on wheels</strong></h2><p>I try to get a seat in the café car, so I'm at a booth with a table. I spread out with my laptop and books. On the way to New London, I refine my lesson plan and remarks for class. On the way home, I check emails and grade.</p><p>I don't like to waste time on the train, so I have less work at home. If I drove to work, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supercommuter-travels-4-states-get-work-earns-6-figures-2024-5">the commute would be dead time</a>, but being on the train is equivalent to the time I'd be sitting at a desk in my office.</p><p>I don't listen to podcasts, and I rarely talk to other passengers on the train. It seems like an imposition, so I mind my own business and do my work.</p><p>Amtrak doesn't have the best food options. I usually eat before or after my ride and occasionally get a cookie or, less often, a bag of popcorn on the train.</p><h2 id="1f858ef5-74c3-49b8-b353-859e550a44ea"><strong>My commute costs me an average of $110 round-trip a week</strong></h2><p>A one-way ticket from Penn Station to New London usually costs $20 to $40, and the reverse ride usually costs $20 to $30. Purchased in advance, the ticket can cost as little as $8.</p><p>The one-way taxi ride in the morning from the New London train station to campus plus tip costs $10. My round-trip subway fare is $5.80. While my daily commute varies, it's around $110 a week.</p><p>My job doesn't provide a travel stipend, but I don't mind. I'm not doing this job for the money. I'm still paying less than I would if I owned a car and had to pay for gasoline, insurance, repair costs, and the car itself.</p><h2 id="7184ee4c-7bbe-4900-86b8-0b7887c774a9"><strong>I don't find the commute to be challenging or stressful</strong></h2><p>I'm glad to have a job as a professor, and if it means taking trains to work, that's fine with me. Many of my colleagues also commute long distances.</p><p>I don't view the commute as a hassle; I view it as my time to work. It would be nice to have a job down the street, but academics don't have as many job options as people in other careers, especially when they <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tenure-wont-get-you-a-promotion-what-to-do-instead-2023-7">have tenure</a>, which I have.</p><p>Plus, I don't have to worry about road rage, construction, traffic jams, or dangerous drivers on the way to work. My stress level is very low when riding the train. Sometimes the train is delayed, but that's the worst of it.</p><p>People driving have it much worse: they're stuck in pods and must focus on the road. Even if cars produced zero pollution, I wouldn't want to drive one.</p><h2 id="91aeaec2-555d-4f4d-b856-01689a5af9a0"><strong>Being a long-distance commuter is doable if you don't have to get behind the wheel</strong></h2><p>If you're considering a job opportunity that seems far away but potentially doable, look into public transportation options. The freedom you'll have if you don't have to get behind the wheel can make the entire experience relaxing and productive.</p><p>Plus, not driving makes me sharper, more alert, and more energized once I get to my job. It lets me get so much done that at the end of the commute, I can shut down my computer when I get home and live my life in the greatest city in the world.</p><p><em>Want to share your supercommuting story? You hand over Rs 500 to the delivery person and there’s that commonly heard phrase, “change nahi hai kya.” Most of us have been in situations like these and now that <keyword id="20030235" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPI-payments" source="keywords">UPI payments</keyword> are more common than ever, hardly anyone seems to be carrying change. <br /><br />Food delivery giant <keyword id="19901323" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zomato" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Zomato" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> seems to have found a solution to this problem. The company’s CEO <keyword id="19901325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deepinder-Goyal" source="keywords">Deepinder Goyal</keyword> announced in a post on X that delivery partners can now add COD orders’ balance amount to a customer’s <keyword id="22710108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato-Money-account" source="keywords">Zomato Money account</keyword> instantly. That way, nobody has to worry about carrying change.<br /><br /><h2>Zomato CEO has answer to your change problems</h2>In his post on X, Goyal wrote, “For cash on delivery orders, finding exact change can sometimes be inconvenient. Starting today, our customers can pay delivery partners in cash, and ask for the balance amount to be added instantly to their <keyword id="22700688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato-money" source="keywords">Zomato Money</keyword> account. This balance can be used towards future delivery orders or dining out.”<br /><br />Goyal also acknowledged that this idea was inspired by Tata group-owned <keyword id="20041313" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Big-Basket" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Big Basket" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Big Basket">Big Basket</keyword>. “Thank you @bigbasket_com for the inspiration for this solution, and our delivery partners (three of them are working as product managers with us) for insisting that we develop this asap,” he wrote. <br /><br /><h2>Zomato earns crores from platform fee</h2>Zomato was also making headlines earlier this week for raking in a lot of moolah by charging platform fees.<br /><br />The company started charging platform fees in August last year and this has proved to be a successful business move. During its annual report, Zomato revealed that it has collected Rs 83 crore till March from levying platform fee.<br /><br />For the unversed, platform fee is a small additional charge that the company adds to your order. Think of it as a convenience fee for using the app's services, including delivery, customer support, and the seamless experience of browsing through hundreds of restaurant options.<br /><br />Initially, the company used to levy Rs 2 per order as platform fee. But that amount has grown in the last year and today Zomato charges Rs 6 as platform fee in key areas. It can be located when you load the bill details of your order.<br />

It is expected to be rolled out in a phased manner across all major cities.<br /><br />While an increase of ₹1 may seem insignificant to most people who place orders online, it adds up to a good source of revenue for Swiggy and Zomato which process lakhs of orders every day.<br /><br />Platforms such as Zomato and Swiggy aim to earn ₹1.25 to ₹1.5 crore per day through platform fees.<br /><br /><h2>Customers not happy</h2>Customers have not reacted positively to this news. The comment section was filled with praise, with many fans asking him how he managed to shed all that weight so quickly. But the truth is, Tanmay’s journey has been far from quick. If anything, his story is a fine lesson on the importance of <keyword id="20419014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consistency" source="keywords">consistency</keyword> and finding what works for <em>you</em>.<br /><div type="twitter" handle="bhav_paaji" handlename="bhav_paaji" favoritecount="0" retweetcount="0" id="1827223029924917442"></div>Losing weight — whether to get back your health on track or to achieve a glow-up — is something that tops almost everyone’s new year’s resolution list. As January rolls in, people rush to the gym in hordes to sign up for the annual memberships. By around March, they realise that maybe the gym isn’t for them since they haven’t been going regularly/are barely noticing any changes in their body.<br /><br />Tanmay was no exception and experienced the same thing when he restarted his <keyword id="20239882" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fitness-journey" source="keywords">fitness journey</keyword> back in 2022, he revealed during his appearance on <keyword id="22912153" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kumar-varun" source="keywords">Kumar Varun</keyword>’s <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-SRF0zClvM">Random Musings</a> late in 2023. So, how did he overcome this slump?<br /><h2>What did Tanmay do differently?<br /></h2>Fat loss can often seem daunting, especially when juggling a busy schedule, high stress, and social pressures. Like many of us, Tanmay tried various diet trends, tried eating healthy and even joined the gym. But around three months into it, the YouTuber decided that he simply did not like lifting weights. Instead, he would do some sort of physical activity that he could actually enjoy while ensuring that it kept him moving.<br /><br />Using Playo, he booked a badminton court for every evening and began to <em>consistently </em>play for an hour. He found that he was enjoying himself and this gave him the motivation to do more.<br /><h2>The art of habit-stacking</h2>Once Tanmay had mastered playing an hour of the sport he liked, he leaned into something called “habit stacking”, a term author James Clear coined in his bestselling book <em><keyword id="20250903" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="atomic-habits" source="keywords">Atomic Habits</keyword></em>. This technique involves attaching a new habit to one you already engage with on the regular, essentially taking advantage of the parts of your lives that are already reliable. <br /><br />What Tanmay did was that he set aside another hour to lift weights either before or after badminton — stacking this new habit over his already existing one. So how did Tanmay circumvent this?<br /><br />Speaking to Kumar Varun, the 37-year-old YouTuber said that he started prioritising his health over everything else. Now, Tanmay devotes the time between 5 PM-7:30 PM to his workouts every day and refuses to attend to anything else in that time frame. He suggested that if you want to go for a jog every morning, then keep your running shoes right under your bed — so it’s the first thing you see every morning.<br /><br />Most notably, he stressed that the decision to be healthy is hourly. You must make conscious choices that support your goal at least every hour of the day, say no to temptation and yes to what’s good for you. This may sound like it’s easier said than done, Tanmay asserts that it is the way to master your mind.<br /><br />Today, Tanmay Bhat has already lost around 50 kilograms and is showing no signs of slowing down. While it is certainly inspiring, we can benefit from the example Tanmay sets. His fitness journey also serves to show the difference small, consistent habits that accumulate over time can make. Online food delivery firm <keyword id="19901323" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato" source="keywords">Zomato</keyword> Ltd on Monday reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 175 crore in the March quarter on the back of higher revenue. The company had posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 188 crore in the same quarter last fiscal, Zomato Ltd said in a regulatory filing. <br /><br /> Consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 3,562 crore. It was Rs 2,056 crore in the year-ago period, it added. <br /><br /> Total expenses were at Rs 3,636 crore. The company posted its total expenses at Rs 2,431 crore in the corresponding period a year ago, it said. <br /><br /> For the fiscal ended on March 31, 2024, the consolidated net profit was Rs 351 crore. The company had posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 971 crore in the previous fiscal ended on March 31, 2023, the filing said. <br /><br /> In FY24, consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 12,114 crore. Also, Reliance Infra board approved a preferential issue to raise Rs 3,014 crore, increasing the stake of Risee Infinity Pvt Ltd, a promoter group entity, along with other investors such as Florintree Innovation LLP and Fortune Financial &amp; Equities Services Pvt Ltd. <br /><br /> The board also approved seeking shareholder authorization to raise an additional Rs 3,000 crore via a qualified institutional placement. This will provide further capital to strengthen the balance sheet and invest in new growth opportunities. <br /><br /> With these fund infusions, Reliance Infra's net worth is set to rise from over Rs 9,000 crore to more than Rs 12,000 crore, according to the filings.
