They are in the spotlight yet again, after their mixed performance during the December quarter. Fintech companies like Paytm and PB Fintech have not only reported better than expected earnings but also narrowed their losses significantly. Zomato and Nykaa did not deliver overall improvement in financials, but analysts remain optimistic. Another new age company among talks is hyperlocal delivery startup Dunzo with elevated losses and massive valuation. Billionaire and chairperson of RPG Group highlighted the financials of the company <a href="https://twitter.com/hvgoenka/status/1625843597626183680">in a tweet </a>on February 15. “New age digital stocks are not doing great primarily because the market is not doing great. India is underperforming this year with a negative 2.34 % return YTD while markets like China, HongKong and South Korea are doing very well. When India’s underperformance changes, new age digital companies also will start performing. Some results from this segment are very good like Paytm. Zomato also has done reasonably well, but Nykaa’s results came below expectations,” said Dr V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services. New age technology companies have been under the scanner because of the massive underperformance in their share prices due to elevated valuation. The growth was driven by pick up in merchant subscription revenues and loan distribution. “Biggest surprise is distribution business, control of cashbacks, opex,” said Macquarie in a report. Shares of the company rose nearly 22% from February 3 when it reported its quarterly earnings. Macquarie has upgraded rating on the company’s stock to ‘Outperform’ from ‘Underperform’ with a target price of ₹800. “PayTM has positively surprised on the distribution of financial services revenue by a wide margin and has also managed to control overall expenses and charges. At the time of listing, profit and free cash flow were not even a part of management’s discussion. However, we see a very visible change in approach of management to deliver profit, evidenced, we believe, by the core EBIDTA profitability that was reported recently,” said Macquarie in a report. Zomato: A promising road to profitability Zomato reported better than expected Q3 FY23 revenues, and analysts believe it may reach profitability by the end of the current financial year. “Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. “Zomato’s road to profitability has grown even more promising. Zomato (ex-quick commerce) clocked adj. EBITDA level profitability in the month of Jan-23. Depending on execution-related wins, the company (ex of quick commerce) may clock profitability in Q4FY23 itself, two quarters ahead of their guidance,” added the report. Analysts say Zomato’s relaunch of its Gold membership plan should bring growth back. Most brokerage houses have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/no-long-tail-effect-zomato-banks-on-demand-recovery-in-future-even-as-it-shuts-operations-in-225-cities-on-poor-performance/articleshow/97907071.cms">maintained a ‘Buy’ rating </a>on the company’s stock. “The fact that most of these companies have put forth their strategy to cut down losses and become profitable in the near future builds hope for investors. For example, Zomato’s decision to cut operations in 225 smaller cities. Moreover, since most of these <keyword id="10951575" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-age-tech-companies" source="Orion">new age tech companies</keyword> are direct consumer based there are expectations of inflation cooling down and boosting consumer spend.” Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research (retail) at Kotak Securities told Business Insider India. Nykaa: Premium valuation reflects solid outlook, say analysts Nykaa, reported a 70% on year decline in net profit in Q3 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/nykaas-stock-plunges-4-2-after-its-q3-net-profit-slips-70/articleshow/97901748.cms">missing analysts expectations</a>. Despite this, brokerages believe the best is yet to come for the company. During a post-earnings conference call Falguni Nayar, executive chairperson, MD and CEO of Nykaa said that although inflationary pressures were present, it wasn’t that big of an issue for many of Nykaa’s customers. Q3 is considered to be a seasonal quarter for the company because of the festive season and despite macro challenges Nykaa’s growth was applauded by analysts. “In a quarter rampaged by a tougher macroeconomic environment, Nykaa reported substantial growth in Q3FY23 numbers,” said a report by JM Financial. The brokerage firm has assigned a ‘Buy’ rating on the stock. “We continue to see increased strength of the dominant positioning in beauty and personal care (BPC) vertical while the newcomer, fashion vertical, has gained market share at the cost of a sharp dip in contribution margin,” added the report. Nykaa’s EBITDA margins came under pressure and fell to 5.3% in Q3, as against 6.3% in the same period last year. “While we expect Nykaa’s GMV growth, at 35% in FY23E-25E, to be the highest within our global ecommerce coverage, we believe Nykaa’s valuation premium (FY24 EV/GMV of 3.1x vs 0.5x median for peers) already reflects this solid growth outlook and Nykaa’s stronger margin profile,” said a report by Goldman Sachs. The investment banker has assigned a ‘Neutral’ rating on the stock. PB Fintech on course to profitability soon The December quarter performance of PB Fintech, the parent company of Policybazaar and Paisabazaar, was another surprise for investors as the company narrowed its losses significantly. Its insurance premiums jumped 70.3% on year to ₹30.3 billion driven by a strong showing across segments. “Given its market share of 90%-plus in online insurance sales and a growing offline presence, PB is poised to post strong sales,” said analysts at Nuvama Institutional Equities. Further, the management expects revenue and margins to improve further as agent productivity rises and benefits of appointments channel are realised. They hinted at a sharp profitability uptick in Q4, say analysts. “This growth becomes even more impressive considering the seasonally weak Q3 for insurance, where new business premiums for life and general insurance declined QoQ by 19% and 12%, respectively,” said a report by JM Financial. New-age internet based businesses, like their unlisted peers, have been chalking out strategies that lead them towards profitability and are already on a growth path aided by their unique business propositions — allaying investor and analyst concerns. New age technology companies back in the spotlight after Q3 performance

Once the Rs 4,447 crore (about $568 million) acquisition of <keyword id="12724311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blinkit" source="Orion">Blinkit</keyword> is closed, <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> will experiment with cross leveraging its customers base for Blinkit and vice versa, its Founder and CEO <keyword id="476451" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deepinder-goyal" source="Orion">Deepinder Goyal</keyword> has stressed. Goyal said that in India, super brands will work better than super apps. "Which means that the Blinkit app will continue to operate independently. We will also start working on integrating the delivery fleet back-ends which should drive higher delivery efficiency over time," he said in the letter to shareholders. Tech integrations between the two companies will accelerate the pace of progress at both ends, he added. According to the company, the losses for Blinkit are coming down every month -- from Rs 2,040 million (about $26 million) in January 2022 to Rs 929 million ($12 million) in July. "The losses have come down owing to a) operating leverage and b) improved execution. As the GOV (gross order value) per day per store goes up, losses come down given the high operating leverage in the business," said Zomato CFO Akshant Goyal. The company said that Blinkit has also shut down a number of unviable dark stores, which were not scaling and the team will continue to evaluate non-performing stores. In just six months, the Blinkit business has scaled to 20 per cent of Zomato's food delivery GOV while being present in less than 15 cities. According to Akshant, Zomato took about 45 months since the launch of food delivery to get to the current monthly GOV scale of Blinkit. Deepinder said that there is a misconception that Zomato would have gotten to the same (or perhaps bigger) scale and size had we launched quick commerce organically seven months ago. Akshant added that in Gurugram, Blinkit GOV is 70 per cent of Zomato food delivery GOV (for June). "Quick commerce cuts across a wide range of essential spends including grocery, fruits and vegetables, beauty and personal care, OTC medicines, stationery items, among others. Therefore, we expect the overall customer base, average order value as well as monthly order frequency to be higher than food delivery," he mentioned. With continued solid execution and synergy realisation with Zomato, post the transaction, the Blinkit journey to profitability "should only accelerate", the company noted. Zomato reported Rs 185.7 crore in consolidated loss for the quarter ending June 30, compared to a loss of Rs 359.7 crore in the previous quarter. The consolidated revenue saw 67 per cent increase at Rs 1,413.9 crore from Rs 844.4 crore (same quarter last year), and 16.68 per cent up from Rs 1,211.8 crore in the last reported quarter. Zomato, Blinkit will cross-leverage each other's customer base soon, says Deepinder Goyal

At the height of the pandemic, instead of outsourcing the Taj Hotel Group’s delivery services to existing platforms, the Tata Group launched its own in-house platform in Qmin. In the last two years, Qmin has generated revenues to the tune of ₹100 crore. This year alone, it hopes to clock in revenues to the tune of ₹80 crore. “We are possibly the only food delivery platform that has been profitable from day one because we have found the right balance of using our existing resources,” Jehangir Press, associate VP, strategic accounts management group and commercial director, Qmin at IHCL, told Business Insider India. The 90-minute delivery service Zomato and its rival Swiggy together hold <a href="https://theprint.in/theprint-essential/are-zomato-swiggy-helping-restaurant-business-or-hurting-it-why-cci-has-ordered-a-probe/905581/">90-95%</a> market share in India’s food delivery business, but also burning cash. In the quarter ending March 2022, Zomato posted a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/zomato-posted-a-1222-crore-loss-but-its-stock-gained-18-reasons-behind-the-surge/articleshow/91766080.cms">net loss</a> of ₹1,222 crore, which widened by ₹400 crore since last year. With Qmin, the Tata Group could move away from having to depend on the likes of Zomato or Swiggy for deliveries. Qmin also gave the group complete control over the entire value chain from food preparation to delivery. “We have 100% control – over the value chain and with that, you are in control of the safety, hygiene, and health of everything that you're sending out. Also, we obviously cannot compromise on hygiene and safety. We took a call and even though it costs us substantially more, we went with the complete ecosystem,” said Press. Unlike its competitors that have been focusing on chopping their delivery time from 30 minutes to 10 minutes, Qmin says it has prioritized safety, security, hygiene, sustainability and delivering a luxurious experience. Qmin takes up to 90 minutes to deliver its orders. Its menu starts from ₹200 onwards and Qmin’s family feast widget and Fiama pizzas are the most ordered meals on the app. <div type="image" title="Qmin Packaging image" msid="93520889" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Qmin&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> It has delivered over a million meals to consumers so far and donated over 57,000 meals to flood-affected areas of Assam. Our truck business will also grow, (but) not at the same pace. The shops are where we see the major growth,” said Press. Qmin is also looking at expanding its presence across borders, starting with the UK, US and UAE markets. While delivery and retail shops contribute almost equally to Qmin’s overall sales, Press is confident that retail shops will contribute a lion’s share of the revenue in the near future.

Zomato IPO: Here’s how to apply via banks and apps like Zerodha, Paytm Money

<ul><li>Indian <keyword id="3105315" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foodtech">foodtech</keyword> unicorn <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> has reported a 105% growth in revenue – from $192 million in FY19 to $394 million in FY20. </li><li>The company has also seen its EBITDA loss widen by 5.7% from $277 million in FY19 to $293 million in FY20. </li><li>Zomato founder <keyword id="476451" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deepinder-Goyal">Deepinder Goyal</keyword> said they expect to make complete recovery over the next 3-6 months.</li></ul>Indian foodtech unicorn Zomato has doubled its revenue from $192 million in FY19 to $394 million in FY20. The company has also seen its EBITDA loss has widened by 5.7% from $277 million in FY19 to $293 million in FY20. “While COVID-19 has impacted the size of our business, it has accelerated our journey to profitability. In terms of the size of the business, COVID-19 has set us back by a year or so – but a year is only a small blip when you are building a company for the next 100 years,” wrote Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal in a blog. In the first quarter of FY21, with most restaurants being shut and operating on a takeaway only business, Zomato reported a revenue of $41 million and loss of $12 million. But Goyal believes that the COVID-19 pandemic has made their business healthy. “In July 2020, we estimate our monthly burn rate to land under $1m, while our revenue should land at ~60% of pre-COVID peaks ($23m per month). We expect to make complete recovery over the next 3-6 months while continuing to maintain tight control on costs/profitability,” he wrote. While Zomato had laid off 13% of its workforce due to the coronavirus pandemic, 75% of its employees volunteered for partial salary cuts resulting in a total reduction of 14% in payroll costs. However, the original salaries have now been reinstated and the burn rate of July includes the salary costs, said Goyal. Meanwhile, Zomato’s FY20 India food delivery Gross Merchandising Volume grew by 108% over FY19. “ In Q1 FY20, we used to make a contribution margin of –₹47 per order; in Q1 FY21, we made a contribution margin of +₹27 per order,” wrote Goyal. Zomato has doubled its revenue and founder Deepinder Goyal says COVID-19 has made the company lean and mean

<ul><li>Uber Eats in India discontinued its operations on January 21 and was acquired by food giant Zomato.</li><li>We speak to industry experts to find out the reasons why the food delivery platform took a nosedive and if the onus can be put on macro-economic factors or its brand-building strategy.</li><li>Experts opine that working with minimum funding, rivaling against stronger communications from competitors, disadvantages of being a late entrant, not having a separate identity, getting sidelined from the parent company and offering deep discounting were some of the factors that led to its decline.</li></ul> Food aggregator Uber Eats, which started its journey in 2017, was acquired by Zomato on January 21 for ₹2,485 crore. While its entity will cease to exist, Uber Eats’ consumers, restaurants and delivery partners will now be directed to Zomato. However, the buyout has left more than 200 employees on a cliffhanger. The acquirer Zomato started in 2008 and now has over 40 million users. Swiggy, on the other hand, started in 2013 and has gathered 42 million users. Uber Eats, which was established just three years ago, had over 10 million users. And with Uber Eats’ huge consumer base in its kitty, Zomato will now have control over 50-55% of the food delivery market. Experts opine that one of the reasons for Uber Eats downfall was its heavy discounting strategy. The operational losses amounted to ₹2,197 crore, more debts followed and a heavy competitive market did not let it sustain. As Uber Eats hits its brink and merges with Zomato, we speak to experts to find out the reasons, what could the platform have done differently to sustain and explore if upping its marketing game before would have helped in dodging the bullet. Increasing the frequency of communication with audiences Uber Eats had on-boarded Alia Bhatt as its brand ambassador -- the only food aggregator in India to get a celebrity involved in its communication. However, it released its first brand campaign after two years of its existence -- in the month of January 2019 called ‘Everyday moments.’ According to Voodly, it garnered more than 50.3 million views by the end of January and secured the first spot on the list of Top 10 Most Watched Indian Ads on YouTube.

 Karthik Srinivisan, Social Media and Brand Expert, says that there isn’t much for food aggregators to talk about so its communication strategy cannot be blamed. The ads can be about ‘variety, prompt delivery, post-delivery customer care, ease of ordering, UI/UX, payment options, loyalty program, promotions, etc.’ Gone are the days when brands would wait for some key occasions for a big media splash. Now it is more about participating in daily conversations, listening to what your consumers say. And being active on social media isn’t very expensive either. Srinivasan thinks Uber Eats could have been more consistent like Zomato and Swiggy here. “To be in the top-of-mind recall in such a category, the brands need to continuously be in the buzz. Zomato and Swiggy have cracked that code to a large extent, always being in the social buzz one way or another. Brands are moving away from one or two big-budget media blitzkrieg every year to announce their brand name to the largest number of people, to having sustained presence throughout the year to the most appropriate target audiences. This ensures that brands do not have only two peaks in a year where people notice their communication, but there's a consistent wave (instead of peaks) all through the year where a large enough number of target audiences notice their brand. Uber Eats perhaps did this less impressively or consistently compared to both Zomato and Swiggy,” adds Srinivasan. However, Srinivasan says the real reason is unplugging Uber Eats’ support system. “Beyond all this is the investors' appetite to continue funding these businesses despite losses. At some point, they may want to pull the plug to cut their losses and that could be the bigger reason for the sale.” N Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research feels Uber Eats did not offer anything different from its competitors and its USP wasn’t clear in its communication. “Other than the fact that they used a celebrity for endorsements, I think the ads did not communicate much. With more number of restaurants available on the competing apps, the promise of variety or choice, felt lame,” he explains. Chandramouli rates Zomato’s communication strategy the most innovative in the category, followed by Uber Eats and then Swiggy. Late mover disadvantages Almond Branding’s Founder and Director, Shashwat Das, thinks the reasons for Uber Eats’ downfall has more to do with the business model and category dynamics rather than its communication strategy. “The two largest incumbent players in the market, Swiggy and Zomato, were already half-way to the top by 2017 and had by now exclusively tied up with major restaurants. Uber had to hence rely on heavy discounting to acquire and retain users and deep discounting strategy is never sustainable as consumer keeps benefiting but none of the market players win in the battle of dominance. Last-mile delivery is an operations-heavy, low-margin business where most of the startups failed due to lack of knowledge, field experience, and funding,” notes Das. “Uber knows from its cab hailing experience that any app brand that is not number 1 or 2 in the country it operates in, will find it difficult to be a successful and profitable business. In any app-based delivery brand, only ONE brand remains top-of-mind for consumers, with one more kept as backup. There is rarely room for a #3,” seconds Chandramouli. Some of the restaurants in India still offer free home delivery with no price caps and Das thinks the food market isn’t easy to crack. Downloading more apps, building new relationships and settling for lesser pay cuts did not make a stronger pitch for restaurant partners either. “Once an app signs up a merchant, a regular flow of business determines what importance the delivery app holds for the restaurant. Plus, the incumbents had more focus, spend-power and aggression than Uber Eats. With Uber Eats India accumulating more losses than Uber, its cab hailing sister-concern, added to the pressure from international investors after their poor IPO, the only good option for Uber was perhaps to cut losses and focus on their core,” says Chandramouli. Developing a distinct identity While Uber Eat’s core idea was to piggyback on Uber’s image and use its established network, Chandramouli suggests that this wasn’t a smart move as it affected Uber’s disruptor position. “I think they should have launched the food-delivery business under a different brand. Truly speaking, Uber's cab hailing app was always recognized as an innovator and leader, but by launching Uber Eats, it almost seemed like a me-too, copycat brand, losing its innovator positioning. Another risk of extending the Uber brand to this new business was that cab hailing apps business required a more involved and intimate decision of the consumer, which a food-delivery app did not,” he elaborates. Thanks to Swiggy and Zomato’s heavy funding, they had the bandwidth to innovate and offer discounts. However, their core focus is food delivery and Uber’s, on the other hand, is mobility. Das thinks this could be one of the reasons why it was sidelined and cut at the source when it fell loose. “Even though Uber Eats was launched with much fanfare, Uber couldn’t focus on it as much as its competitors. Clearly its core mobility ambitions in India were its top priority. Cab hailing companies like Ola and Uber after having burnt their fingers in this cash-guzzling sector saw more merit in focusing on their core rather than the side businesses,” says Das. Was it a smart move for Zomato? As per media reports, Uber will get a 10% stake in Zomato in a deal that values Uber Eats at $300-350 million. "It was a bad deal for Zomato I think, giving away stock worth 300 million USD, to a company struggling to stay afloat. I think Swiggy will gain from this. And for Uber, of course, this seems to be their long term strategy of buying into local food compaines," says Shubho Sengupta, Brand Consultant. "There is no economic crisis for those who order on Zomato. They are in the top 15% earners of this country," adds Sengupta. All eyes on Swiggy and Zomato While Dunzo and Food Panda also exist in the battleground, the horse race will continue between two stalwarts Zomato and Swiggy. This consolidation, experts opine, will bring some more financial discipline, nudge them to be more creative and source the much needed tech support from their parent companies.

What went wrong with Uber Eats?

New Delhi, July 10 () Online food ordering platform Zomato on Friday said its revenue in the last financial year jumped over two fold to USD 394 million (around Rs 2,960 crore) as compared to 2018-19. The earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in the last financial year stood at around Rs 2,200 crore, Zomato said in its performance report. In 2018-19, the revenue was about Rs 1,440 crore and EBITDA stood at Rs 2,080 crore. "Moving our business towards profitability was a core focus for us in FY20 and we made significant progress along that journey," Zomato said. While COVID-19 has impacted the size of the company's business, it has accelerated its journey to profitability. "In terms of the size of the business, COVID-19 has set us back by a year or so, but a year is only a small blip when one is building a company for the next 100 years," it added. "COVID-19 has positively impacted the health of our business – we seem to have gained 2-3 years along this vector. In July 2020, we estimate our monthly burn rate to land under USD 1 million, while our revenue should land at around 60 per cent of pre-COVID peaks (USD 23 million per month)," the report said. Zomato expects to make complete recovery over the next 3-6 months while continuing to maintain tight control on costs and profitability, it added. Highlighting the performance of its business segments, Zomato said FY20 was a defining year for food delivery in India. While FY19 saw hyper-competition between 4 well-funded food delivery players, FY20 ended with a two player market structure, it claimed. The company's FY20 India Food Delivery gross merchandise value (GMV) grew to USD 1,496 million (over Rs 11,250 crore) as against USD 718 million (over Rs 5,395 crore) for 2018-19, the report said. As of now, food delivery GMV has recovered to 60 per cent of pre-COVID levels. "We have taken a number of important steps to ensure safety of our food delivery customers, which has been a significant driver of the rebound in our business so far," it added. As offices start opening up, these professionals are now starting to move back to the larger cities and the company expects sharp recovery in order volumes as lockdown continues to ease and the operating environment improves, the report said. The unit economics of the company's food delivery business have improved consistently over the last 18 months, it added. About the Dining out, the report said, "Our dining out business grew steadily in spite of headwinds (e.g. logout campaign against Zomato Gold by restaurants in India) with significant gains in EBITDA margins across India and our international markets in FY20". Dining out revenue grew to over Rs 421 crore in 2019-20 as against about Rs 349 crore in the preceding fiscal, it added. This business is fast moving towards being a transaction-led business where the focus is to close the loop with restaurants by encouraging users to pay their eating-out bills through the Zomato app, the report said. The recovery in the dining out is going to be slow. Users will be concerned about social distancing and hygiene and restaurants will need to reorganise themselves to be able to build trust with users on these fronts, it added. Emphasising that its B2B supplies (Hyperpure) is growing strongly, Zomato said it believes that it has early indications of a strong product market fit. "Until now, we have only been serving Delhi and Bengaluru with Hyperpure. We have covered a lot of ground in the last two years, and we are now expanding rapidly into new cities," the report said. The Hyperpure revenue for 2019-20 stood at over Rs 110 crore as against about Rs 13 crore in the previous year, it added. About its social responsibility arm, Zomato Feeding Foundation, the report said the foundation aims to be the largest and most impactful not-for-profit aimed at solving hunger needs in the developing world. Feed the Daily Wager campaign collected Rs 32 crore which was used to distribute over 65 million meals in the form of ration kits to the daily wager community, hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis, it added. "We aim to grow our Feeding Foundation community multiple folds going forward. Solving hunger is a massive problem, but a solvable one if all of us just started caring about it enough," the report said.
