The study was conducted by MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), MIT Sloan, The Productivity Institute, and IBM's Institute for Business Value, Neil Thompson, a lead researcher at MIT CSAIL and the Initiative on the Digital Economy, earlier told CNBC Make It, "Our research into AI-powered automation, particularly in computer vision, suggests that it may not be financially viable to automate many tasks for quite some time, possibly not for several years or even decades." On the other hand, a CNN report in June this year talked about how over 61 percent of large US companies are mulling over the idea of using AI to take care of tasks that were earlier being done by humans. So, if AI will be replacing humans at their jobs is something that only time will tell. Data Entry and administrative jobs</h2> AI's ability to process and organize data with speed and accuracy makes data entry and administrative roles slightly vulnerable. Repetitive, rule-based tasks like document scanning and information sorting are prime candidates for automation. Moreover, tools like Uipath, Power Automate and Blue Prism can already help with data entry, reducing the need for human intervention. <h2>2. Customer service agents</h2> The customer service industry is undergoing significant changes as AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants become more sophisticated. These technologies can handle routine customer inquiries, bookings, and support issues 24/7, often more efficiently than human agents. While complex problem-solving and empathy still require a human touch, basic customer service roles are increasingly at risk. For instance, platforms like Swiggy, Zomato and even Myntra have AI chatbots taking care of customers' complaints first. A customer service representative is needed only when an issue can't be resolved by the AI chatbot. <h2>3. Graphic designers</h2> The rise of AI-generated art has put graphic designers in direct competition with technology. Tools like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion and DALL-E make it easy to create professional images without artistic expertise. All you need, quite honestly, is a good imagination and the ability to write text prompts. And these tools become more widespread, businesses may rely less on traditional graphic design services. <h2>4. Programmers</h2> Generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini are already capable of writing code, raising concerns about the future of entry-level programming jobs. While programming requires precision and structure, AI is rapidly improving its ability to perform these tasks, potentially reducing the need for human programmers in certain areas. <keyword id="19912297" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nvidia" source="keywords">Nvidia</keyword> CEO <keyword id="19979316" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jensen-huang" source="keywords">Jensen Huang</keyword>, in February this year, had made headlines for saying that AI has turned everybody into a programmer. Huang was speaking at an event and the video had surfaced online. He believes that people needed to learn coding about a decade back but now, anybody can be a programmer with AI. "You now have a computer that will do what you tell it to do. It is vital that we upskill everyone and the upskilling process will be delightful and surprising," he had said. <h2>5. Travel agents and planners</h2> The days of relying on travel agents to plan trips may be numbered as AI takes over trip planning. Combined with virtual tours and online resources, travelers can now gather all the information they need without consulting a travel advisor. In June this year, Google had published a blog post that talked about how AI tools could help users plan their trips. In future, tools like these could be commonplace and that could impact travel advisors' jobs. As AI continues to evolve, its impact on the job market will likely vary across different sectors. While some roles may be at risk, others could be enhanced by AI, allowing humans to focus on more creative and complex tasks. The future of work in the age of AI remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: adaptation will be key.

AI taking human jobs debate continues, what jobs it could replace first

<ul><li>Section 80JJAA of the Income Tax Act gives deduction for three years to employers for hiring new people.</li><li>The current limit of this provision is ₹300,000 a year that effectively means that the compensation of these people should be less than ₹25,000.</li><li>If the limit is increased, it could help in boosting the salaries of and the number of jobs for gig workers.</li></ul>One of the major concerns raised by the gig workers — such as <keyword id="4235145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delivery-partners" source="Orion">delivery partners</keyword>, drivers and more — who work for companies like Zomato, Swiggy, BigBasket and Blinkit (Grofers), is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/bigbasket-flipkart-and-urban-company-may-have-paid-fair-wages-but-it-wasnt-enough-to-earn-a-living/articleshow/88946309.cms">the lack of decent compensation</a>. But what if we were to tell you that if an existing provision of the Income Tax Act is clarified and amended, it could raise salaries for the gig workers. Under Section 80JJAA provision of the Indian Income Tax Act, companies can get a tax deduction for hiring new people. If a company’s workforce increased by 50, the salary paid to these employees would make the company eligible for an additional deduction of 30% for the next three financial years, Hemal Zobalia, Partner at Deloitte Haskins &amp; Sells LLP explains. For example, if the company is paying ₹1000 annually to each of these 50 employees, it will get ₹300 as tax deduction for each of them for each of the next three years. Essentially, 90% of the first year’s salary, for each of the new employees, will be deducted from the company’s taxable profit. The goal of this provision is to create more permanent employment for those who are “low-skilled”, according to Jimit Devani, a partner at Deloitte Haskins &amp; Sells. The provision is applicable for employees whose salaries are ₹25,000 per month or less.Increasing the salary limit to ₹35,000-₹40,000 may push more companies to hire permanent employees instead of contractual ones. Meanwhile, Zobalia is of the belief that this would also help in further increasing their payout and salaries. But there is a bigger challenge here. This is not a widely availed incentive by the companies for several reasons. First, companies prefer to hire people on contract and keep them on a third party’s payroll. Such companies cannot avail tax benefit under the 88JJAA provision. Bringing people on to the payroll makes them eligible for other benefits like pension, insurance, and severance to name a few, Devani said. The third parties, however, do avail these tax benefits for employees that have been on their payroll for at least eight months, Devani added. The second issue with this provision is that the benefit is available only on the net addition of employees. Say, a company has a total of 10 employees. Five of them quit the company in a year, and six more are hired in the same year. While the company has six new employees, the net addition to the workforce is only one. And, so, the tax rebate is available only for one additional employee, and not all six. Improving this provision under the income tax law may go a long way in creating sustainable employment for people with less-valued skills, across a range of industries including the gig economy of which the likes of Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon and Flipkart are part of. The current state of salaries in the gig economy As per <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/urban-company-ola-uber-are-not-the-best-places-for-gig-workers/articleshow/88561764.cms">Fairwork India report of 2021</a>, most newage digital platforms — including Zomato, Swiggy, Uber, Dunzo, PharmEasy and Ola — do not offer fair wages to the contractual workers associated with them. There’s a way government can prod Zomato, Swiggy, Uber and Ola to increase salaries of delivery partners and drivers

Online food delivery platform <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword> has started charging all users a "platform fee" of Rs 2 per food order, irrespective of the cart value. The company told IANS that the additional charges are being levied only on food orders on the main platform and does not apply on Instamart users. "The platform fee is a nominal flat fee charged on food orders. This fee helps us operate and improve our platform and enhance app features to deliver a seamless app experience," a Swiggy spokesperson said in a statement. The platform fee is over and above the convenience and handling fees for food delivery. As last reported, Swiggy claimed to have processed over 1.5-2 million orders through the day. People in Hyderabad ordered a whopping 10 lakh biryanis and 4 lakh plates of haleem on leading food-delivery platform Swiggy during the holy month of Ramzan. In March, the online food delivery platform said it delivered 33 million plates of idlis in the last 12 months, indicating the immense popularity of this dish among customers. Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai were the top three cities where idlis were ordered the most. The company, on average, has over 2.5 lakh restaurant partners enabled on its platform, and typically onboards about 10,000 restaurants every month. Swiggy begins charging Rs 2 'platform fee' per food order from users

<ul><li>The Indian Federation of App-based Transport workers (IFAT) have filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking social security benefits.</li><li>They demanded that gig workers should be considered as “unorganised workers”, which will make their employers liable to pay them certain benefits.</li><li>The lack of employment contracts between gig workers and new age platforms does not mean there is no employer-employee relationship, the petition read.</li></ul>Some of India’s gig workers — associated with new age firms like Uber, Ola, Zomato and Swiggy — are seeking government intervention to help them overcome the impact of the pandemic and make their employers pay for it. The Indian Federation of App-based Transport workers (IFAT) filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court two days ago, seeking their inclusion as “unorganised workers” or “wage workers” within the Unorganised Workers Social Welfare Security Act, 2008. The association, in collaboration with concerned individuals and organisations, noted that the denial of social security to gig workers and “platform workers’ has resulted in their exploitation through forced labour. The transport gig workers, in the petition accessed by Business Insider, noted that the failure to register them as unorganised workers or provide them with social security is violating their right to life and personal liberty as well as right to equality. They also added that app-based companies — Zomato, Swiggy, Uber, Ola and others — currently claim that they are in partnership with gig workers, therefore there is no contract of employment between the two parties. Hence, they want their hands off any responsibility or accountability over the lives and livelihood of the contractual workers associated with them. “The mere fact that their employers call themselves “aggregators” and enter into the so-called “partnership agreements” does not take away the fact that there exists a jural relationship of employer and employee; master and servant and worker within the meaning of all applicable laws,” the petition read. IFAT added that the contracts were made in a way to disguise the nature of the relations between the gig workers and these apps. They also cited a recent Supreme Court ruling in the United Kingdom, which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-reclassify-uk-drivers-minimum-wage-benefits-supreme-court-defeat-2021-3">stated</a> that Uber Drivers are in fact workers in the company and are entitled to certain benefits. The workers’ association added that the transport gig workers in India are struggling with decreasing income, increasing fuel prices, immense pressure from loan recovery agents as well as state officials, who too are trying to make a living in this pandemic. Gig workers move Supreme Court seeking social security benefits from Zomato, Swiggy, Ola and Uber

Consulting firms were the top recruiters in the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta final placement for the 58th batch of the two-year MBA programme followed by <keyword id="25455" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="finance" source="Orion">finance</keyword>, sales and marketing companies, a statement issued by the institute said. The final placement drive which concluded on February 24, secured 573 offers for the entire 58th batch. The process was conducted in a hybrid mode, it said. The consulting sector recruited the highest (232 offers), followed by the Finance sector (86 offers), and the two sectors accounted for 55.5 per cent of the total hires, the statement said. Leading consulting firms like Accenture Strategy, Bain &amp; Co, Boston Consulting Group, Kearney and McKinsey &amp; Co, were the top recruiters in the consulting sector. Sales &amp; Marketing (52 offers) and General Management (82 offers) combined accounted for 23.4 per cent of total hires, with companies like Aditya Birla Group, <keyword id="462960" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-administrative-services" source="Orion">Tata Administrative Services</keyword>, Vedanta, etc, being amongst the top recruiters in this sector. Top software services and E-commerce brands continued their strong showing accounting for nearly 18.2 per cent of hires. Consulting firms top recruiters in IIM Calcutta final placement

The move comes as fine-dine restaurants are now open across the country after facing a turbulent time in the pandemic, and people now prefer going out with families for dinners. The online food aggregator launched <keyword id="9490437" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="zomato-pro" source="Orion">Zomato Pro</keyword> in 2020 and Zomato Pro Plus in 2021, in a bid to let users enjoy extra perks like priority delivery, money-back guarantee and more. The food tech unicorn had renamed its <keyword id="18712" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gold" source="Orion">Gold</keyword> subscription programme as Zomato Pro. The company has already shut its premium aPro Plus' programme. In a statement to IANS, a Zomato spokesperson said that while Zomato Pro and Pro Plus have been loved tremendously by its customers and merchants, "we want it to be even more beneficial, especially for the most engaged customers and merchant partners". "We are taking feedback and working closely with our customers and restaurant partners to craft a new programme. Meanwhile, we are not onboarding new members and merchant partners to Zomato Pro and Zomato Pro Plus," the company spokesperson added. While active members can continue to get their benefits as promised, they will not be able to extend/renew their memberships once their membership tenure expires. Zomato said it promises "to come up with a bigger, better experience very soon". The consolidated revenue saw 67 per cent increase at Rs 1,413.9 crore from Rs 844.4 crore (same quarter last year), and 16.68 per cent up from Rs 1,211.8 crore in the last reported quarter. <ul><li><keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> has been subjected to a lot of criticism after a social media user pointed out that the same food when ordered online from a restaurant cost much more than when it was ordered offline.</li><li>A Linkedin user shared photos of two bills of the same restaurant — one generated for an offline order and the other for an online order placed from Zomato.</li><li>It is a common practice for restaurants to increase their prices on Zomato and <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword> to ensure that they are not paying for the commissions.</li></ul>Zomato has come under a lot of fire after a social media user pointed out that the same food, when ordered online from a restaurant, cost much higher than when it was ordered offline. The restaurant aggregator and food delivery company has clarified that it has nothing to do with the prices offered by restaurants. Zomato says its job is limited to presenting the restaurant as an option to order from and enabling delivery. This is just the commission for generating business for the restaurant partner, and excludes charges for enabling delivery. Zomato and Swiggy charge the restaurants extra for allocating their own delivery partners to fulfill the order, although the delivery charges are also paid by the customers. While some restaurants opt for their own delivery partners, others choose to go with the option provided by the third-party app. It is a common practice for restaurants to increase their prices on third-party apps like Zomato and Swiggy to ensure they do not pay for the commission. Over the last two years, several restaurants have started accepting orders through their own apps and websites to save on these commissions and provide better offers to their customers. The food delivery companies also charge a certain premium from restaurants for discoverability of their restaurants, placement on the app and other promotional activities. This advertising cost is different for each restaurant based on their negotiated terms with Zomato and Swiggy. Such advertisement charges are also common on other e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, to promote certain sellers. “We charge our restaurant partner commissions based on an agreed-upon rate. We remit to the restaurant partner a net amount equal to the cost of food ordered and packaging charges, less the commission and any restaurant-funded discounts. Separately, the restaurant partner may pay us for any food delivery- related advertisement on the platform,” Zomato had said in its red herring prospectus, before going public last year. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="The issue of discounts" comment="subhead" text="The issue of discounts">The issue of discounts</cmsannotation> Zomato has shared the nitty-gritties of its business model in its red herring prospectus. The company has two types of discounts — the platform-funded discounts and the restaurant-funded discounts. The restaurant-funded ones as the name suggests are given by the restaurant that has taken the order from the customer while the platform-funded discounts are offered by Zomato. Swiggy works on similar lines. Both these platforms faced a lot of criticism from restaurant partners back in 2019 for their deep discounting practices, which forced these companies to decrease their discounts to an extent. “Once we have been able to establish a robust brand presence and achieve a high share of satisfied customers in a particular market, we are typically in a position to decrease marketing expenses on a per-order basis… As a percentage of total income, our advertisement and sales promotion expenses decreased from 88.43% in fiscal 2019 to 24.88% in fiscal 2021,” Zomato noted. And thus, as these discounts reduce, the food ordered online gets more expensive. <ul><li>On Monday, Gunjan Patidar, Zomato’s co-founder and chief technology officer tendered his resignation.</li><li><keyword id="7349800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharatpe" source="Orion">BharatPe</keyword>’s CEO Suhail Sameer has quit the top job to become its strategic advisor.</li><li>There has been a lot of churn in new-age companies like Nykaa, and also big techs like Meta India, WhatsApp Pay, Amazon India and more.</li></ul>New age companies in India have been hit by a flurry of exits by top executives, leaving them scurrying for replacements. This comes at a time when startups have been battling funding winter and elevated inflation, in a rising interest rate regime. BharatPe, a fintech is amongst those with multiple high profile exits, including its co-founder and former managing director Ashneer Grover, along with his wife Madhuri Jain Grover – who not only had to leave the company, but were also sued by BharatPe in December 2022 for ₹88.6 crore. The company alleged that both husband and wife engaged in misappropriation of funds including creating fake bills, enlisting fictitious vendors and so on. Adding to BharatPe’s woes is the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/bharatpe-ceo-suhail-sameer-to-step-down-five-months-after-taking-over/articleshow/96703750.cms">departure</a> of its CEO Suhail Sameer on January 3. Sameer took over as the company’s CEO in August 2021, a year after being appointed as the company’s president. He will now serve as a strategic advisor starting January 7, 2023. Before Sameer, BharatPe witnessed the departure of four other high level executives last November. This includes Nehul Malhotra, head of PostPe which is BharatPe’s ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ arm. The others were the CTO Vijay Aggarwal; Rajat Jain, the chief product officer; and Geetanshu Singla, VP of technology. They moved on to pursue their own entrepreneurial passions, the company had then said in a statement. Zomato rocked by multiple top level exits, too Sameer’s resignation comes hours after Gunjan Patidar, Zomato’s co-founder and chief technology officer, tendered his resignation. Patidar was one of the first few employees of Zomato who built the core tech systems of the company. “Over the last ten plus years, he (Patidar) also nurtured a stellar tech leadership team that is capable of taking on the mantle of leading the tech function going forward. His contribution to building Zomato has been invaluable,” said the company. Patidar’s exit is the third high-level exit at the food delivery giant in two months. In November last year, another one of Zomato’s co-founders Mohit Gupta tendered his resignation. Its head of new initiatives Rahul Ganjoo; and Siddharth Jhawar, vice-president of global growth also quit in the same month. The list goes on as in September 2022, Zomato’s deputy CFO Nitin Savara also tendered his resignation. The company has been bleeding money and it reported a consolidated loss of ₹251 crore in Q2 FY23. New age companies’ top heads move in and out of big tech companies There is a lot of churn among top executives of new-age tech companies as well as big techs. Online beauty retailer Nykaa’s CFO Arvind Agarwal, who had been with the company through its IPO, quit and joined fintech major PayU as its India CFO, this November. On the other hand, new-age companies have also been able to attract executives from major companies into their fold as well. Case in point is Sugar Cosmetics who brought in Amit Aggarwal, Marico’s head of finance of its India business, as its CFO. Adding to it, Amazon India’s director of grocery, food and health Sameer Khetarpal resigned and moved to Jubilant FoodWorks as CEO, a franchisee that runs Domino’s Pizza, Dunkin Donuts outlets in India. Meta India country head Ajit Mohan tendered his resignation in November 2022, to join rival Snap as the President of Asia Pacific. Following this, WhatsApp India’s head Abhijit Bose and Meta India’s public policy head Rajiv Aggarwal also resigned. The latter joined Samsung India. WhatsApp Pay’s director and head Manesh Mahatme also left his position in September to join Amazon India as director, product and engineering. Last but not the least, another shocking exit was of Parag Agarwal, former CEO of Twitter who was fired by Elon Musk in October, a year after he was appointed for the position. Soon after his ouster, Agrawal changed his LinkedIn bio to “Not the CEO you are looking for”. Zomato, BharatPe, Nykaa and more: the revolving door for top execs at new age companies

Former <keyword id="7349800" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bharatpe" source="Orion">BharatPe</keyword> co-founder and managing director <keyword id="2988161" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ashneer-grover" source="Orion">Ashneer Grover</keyword> has revealed he made a cool ₹2.25 crore from <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> IPO within 8 minutes of its opening in July last year. In his memoir 'Doglapan', <keyword id="3433" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="grover" source="Orion">Grover</keyword> said that with the IPO being oversubscribed more than 30 times, he got an allotment of shares worth over ₹3 crore. "My RMs (relationship managers), based on grey-market premiums, were expecting the Zomato share to list between ₹85-90, as against an issue price of ₹76. I, however, was certain that it would do far better. When the share opened on the listing day at ₹116 per share, I mandated them to sell all my shares," he wrote. By the time the trade got executed, "I got a selling price of ₹136 per share. With my landing cost after interest being between ₹82-85, 1 ended up making over ₹2.25 crore," he said. "Within eight minutes of the Zomato IPO opening, I had made over ₹2.25 crore." Grover said that he became a little greedy post the Zomato IPO. "I went in for the Car Trade IPO but ended up losing ₹25 lakh there," he said. Grover, currently facing a court case filed by BharatPe that he co-founded, said that he was bullish on the Zomato IPO on several counts. "Of course, I knew of Deepinder (Goyal), and I am a big believer in his ability to persevere and keep building big. Fundamentally, with the pandemic the ticket size of their orders had grown, as people were ordering food from home for 3-4 members in the family, as against single rolls in office, thereby increasing Zomato's absolute margins," he wrote. Moreover, with restaurants completely dependent during lockdowns on app orders, there was no risk of the take-rate coming down. "On the other hand, job insecurity among delivery boys kept delivery costs in check. In fact, COVID magically solved the food delivery economics in the country overnight, just like it skyrocketed <keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword> penetration," said Grover. The year 2023 has become the worst year for tech employees as nearly 2 lakh tech employees -- from Big Tech firms to startups -- have been sacked to date globally, as companies like Meta, BT, Vodafone and many others announced further plans to lay off more employees in coming months. As per the data by layoffs tracking site Layoffs.fyi, 695 tech companies have shown the doors to around 1.98 lakh employees so far this year. In comparison, 1,046 tech companies laid off more than 1.61 lakh employees in 2022. In January alone this year, close to 1 lakh tech employees lost jobs globally, dominated by companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and others. In total, about 3.6 lakh tech employees have now lost their jobs in 2022 and till May this year. As more and more Big Tech companies continue to sack employees, they listed various reasons behind the move -- over-hiring, uncertain global macroeconomic conditions, strong tailwinds from the Covid-19 pandemic and more. Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly going to start laying off more employees next week in its third round of <keyword id="30690" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="job-cuts" source="Orion">job cuts</keyword>. While the exact number has not been confirmed, it is expected that the company will lay off approximately 6,000 employees in this round. Amazon India laid off around 400-500 employees from its Cloud division AWS as well as People Experience and Technology Solutions (PXT) or HR and support verticals this month. Fintech unicorn Zepz is laying off 420 employees, or 26 per cent of its workforce. The UK telecommunication giant BT Group has announced plans to slash a massive 55,000 jobs by the end of the decade. Global telecom carrier Vodafone said it plans to reduce 11,000 jobs over the next three years, with an aim to "simplify" both headquarters and local markets. Meanwhile, Microsoft will not give any raise to salaried employees, including senior leaders, this year as global macroeconomic conditions continue to haunt Big Tech.
