Indian food delivery unicorn Zomato to expand footprint to 30 more cities

The Swiggy handle on Instagram even ended up getting <a href="http://www.indiantelevision.com/mam/media-and-advertising/ad-campaigns/how-swiggy-witnessed-a-30-per-cent-rise-in-instagram-followers-in-no-time-190310">blocked</a> four times over in the 5 days of the campaign. In this 5-part challenge, the food delivery service got customers to recreate the shape of foods like a Kebab Skewer, Nacho, and Pancakes using the waveform of a voice note.

 WhatsApp and Facebook also have the voice feature, but the difference is that instead of showing waveforms, they only let users play the recording. Making of the ‘#VoiceOfHunger' Challenge <keyword id="7515548" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dentsu-Web-Chutney">Dentsu Web Chutney</keyword>, the digital agency behind the challenge, first saw the potential for their idea when they realised that voice notes could resemble different shapes. Their client services director, GD Prasad, then tried to see if he could do the same in his studio. But soon, he explains, “That's when I realised that Instagram's waveform itself is somewhat a simplified 
format of a regular wave form that you see in professional sound recordings and things like that.”

This food delivery startup has 150,000 Indians making crazy sounds on Instagram

Using the discounts, people from Delhi saved ₹50 crore, according to an official statement from the festival organisers, with 80% of diners from across the country falling into the age bracket of 18-34. There’s a game setter in every business, one that makes a rather low-key entry but its sudden insight and innovations completely transforms the rules of the game.  After having tied up with <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>, <keyword id="143842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobikwik">MobiKwik</keyword> and <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> to solve basic problems of travel, payment and food, the company is now busy finding ways to do away with check-in formalities and time-consuming manual check-out procedures – two tedious processes each and every Indian customer has to go through at every hotel in the country. The idea is to ensure easy walk-ins and walk-outs for a hassle-free experience. 
 <keyword id="1670338" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ritesh-Agarwal">Ritesh Agarwal</keyword>, the 21-year-old CEO of the OYO Rooms who has already inspired one whole generation of youth with his start-up, says he wants that his customers savor luxury, service and comfort of staying at a hotel but also feel at home at the same time. It’s not possible, however, by adhering to the conventional ways of running the hotel business, he feels. 
 
“Showing your ID while entering or doing a manual check-out when leaving – are these the things you do at home? No. If I have them in hotels, how will you feel at home during your stay then?” asks Ritesh. But the question is how is OYO planning to ease the process of payments? 
 
Via tech-based initiatives is Mr Agarwal’s answer! 
 
So for example, the company has seamlessly integrated the MobiKwik wallet into the OYO app. “It facilitates one tap payment. It’s like checking-out of a hotel without the need of stopping to pay,” says Ritesh, adding that such valued partnerships are helping him in maximizing the consumer experience as well as making OYO services better. 
 
For that matter, even his partnerships with OLA and Zomato have helped him in a similar way – finding transport to OYO properties and making the nearest food options accessible to the customers. Both being basic needs of OYO customers that needed to be addressed. 
 
So, OYO's strategy is simple – identifying the pain points first and rather intelligently (which many in the game have failed to see or perhaps ignored) and immediately addressing them by providing the customer easy on-the-go options. 
 
Even though the budget hotel aggregator has no plans of foraying into other sectors as of now, with the launch of OYO WE it is definitely trying to diversify within the sector. 
 
The idea of WE was born after OYO, Ritesh says, was flooded with queries from customers asking if there were any women specific properties. 
 
Realizing that there was a demand for it, he was quick to launch WE in January this year. “It met with tremendous response and excellent feedback from the women guests. Now, we want to provide more women with a comfortable zone which gives them their privacy and space,” says Ritesh. 
 
Notably, WE has all women staff, a toiletry kit customized for women, on-call beauty parlor services and a special selection of books. Currently, there are three WE properties in Gurgaon, Delhi and Noida. The plan is to have fifteen WE properties across 10 cities by the end of this year. 
 
That’s not all. Talks are also on between OYO and Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation for bringing in occupants for MTDC's unsold rooms in resorts. The deal may be sealed under a revenue-share agreement model. 
 
“It’s a great opportunity and will enable us to bring our experience of operation and sales to a large number of properties. Also, through this partnership we will gain access to running some of Maharashtra’s favorite hotels, and we can’t be more thrilled about it. We are still in the process of finalizing things with them,” says Ritesh. 
 
So much on OYO's future plans. 
 
For now, it has announced offers keeping in mind the upcoming festive season. It’s running a flat 30% off pan India, for check-in/check-out till 31 October. (Coupon Code: OYOS30); a flat 50% off on OYO’s select premium properties, Pan India on properties above 2000 INR (Code: PR50). Those heading to Goa during the peak season (October, November and December), there's good news as the company is giving 30% discount across all its properties there. (Code: GOA30). 
 
As the demand graph for OYO Rooms goes up among customers as well as hotels, it plans to expand to 150 cities and to have 50,000 rooms in the country by the end of the year. The bigger aspiration, however, is to be present everywhere in India while focusing on transforming the sector on its way.

That's a long way to describe what insiders are calling rationalization.And on Uber's fourth-quarter 2019 earnings report on Thursday afternoon, that process of raising prices to help shore up a deeply red bottom line is likely to be at the top of anxious investors' minds.Wall Street analysts polled by Bloomberg expect the company to lose an adjusted $0.60 per share on revenues of $3.7 billion. Those numbers would represent roughly a 10% improvement from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-third-quarter-earnings-losses-ridership-eats-delivery-2019-11">the third quarter on both measures. </a>Following the mixed third-quarter numbers expectations, chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi assured analysts that rationalization was coming, possibly even sooner than expected."The rides rationalization has happened much faster I think than anyone expected and we have a ton under our own control as far as our own business model how we use technology and automation to drive per unit margin," he said. In total, the r-word came up 17 times on the call.<h2>But it takes two to tango.</h2>Lyft, which only competes with Uber in the United States and only on ride-hailing (not Eats, flying cars, or anything else), <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-lyft-raising-prices-to-turn-profit-coupons-rationalization-2019-12">said</a> things have been a little more sticky than they'd like."We took a little bit of risk for the first time and led the market in two small, modest pricing increases over the last couple of quarters," Logan Green, Lyft's chief executive, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-lyft-raising-prices-to-turn-profit-coupons-rationalization-2019-12">said at a conference in December. </a>For the most part, those were matched by the competition, he said without naming names (but heavily implying Uber). But when it came to ending the coupons that hit customers' inboxes and apps on a seemingly weekly basis in some markets, things were different."We sort of attempted to do the same thing in terms of couponing and lead in creating a more rational market," Green said. "We have not seen that matched. So we're going to change our stance, and we'll sort of revert to a match and follow position."Despite the high-stakes game of chicken, Wall Street remains overwhelmingly positive on both names, and expects a decent print from Uber on Thursday."US rideshare has seen faster-than-expected rationalization as both Uber &amp; Lyft look to drive profitability," analysts at JPMorgan said in January as they launched coverage of Uber with an overweight rating. The team also liked the company's focus on a "super app" to contain all its services and diverse investments into new bets like self-driving cars, freight, and bikes and scooters."Uber is the global leader in two secular growth industries, ridesharing and food delivery, and is leveraging its massive scale and technological expertise to rapidly launch and scale new products in 60+ countries," JPMorgan continued.<h2>All eyes on Eats</h2>In November, Uber told investors it hopes to be either the top or second player in any delivery market as it expands Eats. " If we can make it to that level," CFO Nelson Chai said, "we'll look to dispose, or will get out of the market."In India, Uber sold its delivery operations to the local competitor Zomato for a nearly 10% stake in the business, worth $250 million. The news excited investors and analysts, sending shares up 6% in trading and soliciting many a positive research note.Eats as a standalone business line, meanwhile, continues to post double-digit percentages of revenue growth, making it one of Uber's fastest-growing segments.That boost has helped the stock regain some of its footing following a massive decline since going public last May. Ever since companies such as eBay and Google were founded, consumers have been experiencing the contribution of Internet in their daily lives. 
 Internet has touched almost all the industries and has transformed the world of scarcity to the world of abundance by organising the unorganised resources, delivering them at the right time and at the right price to consumers in need. Multisided Platforms: Platform is an intermediary that facilitates exchange of products and services between two (or more) user groups. A network effect is a phenomenon that makes a platform more valuable when more people use it. 
 
When members in user group on one side get attracted towards members of user group on the other side, the network effect is called cross-sided network effect. For instance, patients (user group on one side) would prefer to go to a hospital (platform) that has more numbers of reputed doctors (user group on other side). When more members join a user group on one side and make that specific side stronger, then the network effect is called same-side network effect. In this case, hospital that has good doctors would be able to attract more good doctors and when more good doctors join a hospital, strength of hospital as a platform increases.

Crowdsourcing: Crowdsourcing can also be seen as outsourcing to crowd. It is a process of getting ideas and work done through a crowd of people instead of full time resources hired for that particular work. For instance, in the famous quiz show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, contestants used to get few lifelines including audience poll. In this lifeline, participants outsource question to audience (crowd) and get their opinions on answers. Similarly, contests such as case study competitions and programming contests organised by corporates in business schools and engineering schools etc. are also the examples of crowdsourcing as students (external crowd) put in efforts to come up with multiple solutions for a given problem.

Orkut, the social networking platform owned by Google was very popular, but Facebook gained more credibility and eventually people switched from Orkut to Facebook. By providing proper user experience, Facebook has been able to retain its users and has been giving tough competition to Google+. Similarly, Google was not the first search engine in the market, but by providing better search results, it became the market leader and with time its competitors moved out of market. By maintaining its credibility and popularity, Google has been able to create barriers for new competitors.
