How to order food during coronavirus lockdown using Zomato contactless delivery

After initial hiccups, Zomato has started grocery delivery in over 80 Indian cities with supplying essentials and is set to launch takeaway service in Australia and Portugal to support restaurants, its CEO Deepinder Goyal said on Tuesday. He said that all proceeds from the Zomato Gold subscriptions in April would go towards supporting restaurant workers in need and the users will get an additional year of Gold free. "This has already been launched in India and the UAE, and will be live in other markets over the next few days," the Zomato CEO said in a statement. "The world has come to a halt, and unfortunately, the restaurant industry that we are in, is one of the worst hit. It is in times like these when we really need to rise to the occasion and support each other to the best of our abilities," Goyal emphasized. The fool delivery platform has extended all paid Zomato Gold memberships by two months at zero cost. This will be valid across India, the UAE, Australia, Indonesia, Philippines, Lebanon, Turkey, New Zealand, Portugal and Qatar. The company's "Feed the Daily Wager" initiative has raised Rs 25 crore from individuals and corporates. New Delhi, May 11 () Packaging services provider <keyword id="2947488" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bizongo">Bizongo</keyword> on Monday said it has delivered more than two lakh <keyword id="2493103" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="personal-protective-equipment">personal protective equipment</keyword> (PPE) kits across India as part of its contribution in the fight against coronavirus pandemic.These PPEs were distributed in 5,500 localities, servicing 127 organisations spread in 57 urban and rural centres across the country. The recipients of the kits include public and private healthcare service providers, NGOs and private sector organisations, Bizongo said in a statement. "Bizongo worked with NGOs like HT Parekh Foundation, ATE <keyword id="8979806" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandra-foundation">Chandra Foundation</keyword>, Piramal Swasthya, Foundation for Ecological Security, Christian Medical Association of India to ensure the critical PPE kits reached a larger number of people at the forefront of fighting COVID-19," its COO Sachin Agarwal said. The company also supplied these safety kits to private enterprises, including Swiggy, BigBasket, <keyword id="8681398" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Urban-Company">Urban Company</keyword>, <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> and Shadowfax , which continue to provide essential services during the lockdown, he said. While offices, malls are shut, ‘essential services’ like grocery stores, pharmacies are allowed to stay open. In a relief for the Indian e-commerce sector, online retail too fell under the essential services category. However, the relief was been short-lived. Delivery agents from Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato, Grofers, Milkbasket and others were stopped by the police on the roads. Some have also been arrested. On Janata <keyword id="23410" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Curfew">curfew</keyword> (March 22), Grofers said that its delivery agents were stopped and arrested by the police across the country, leading to a delay of over 60,000 orders. Another <keyword id="2709620" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="grocery-delivery">grocery delivery</keyword> startup Milkbasket said that its staff, vendors and vehicles are being pushed back from the roads by local police, disrupting our operations. “We are being told to shut down our distribution centers. Yesterday we had to cancel thousands of orders. We could only operate at 40% capacity in Gurgaon. Even lower in Noida. We might have to cancel all the orders today, impacting over 150,000 families across 4 cities,” said the company’s official statement. Even their warehouses are being asked to shut down. But they aren’t alone. E-commerce behemoths Amazon and Flipkart are facing similar issues. “We are working with the local authorities to enable us to perform these important services providing safety for our delivery associates and allowing them to make sure those priority goods can arrive safely at our customers’ homes without any disruption,” an Amazon spokesperson told Business Insider. While they intend to move ahead with uninterrupted services during the testing times, they are also working with local authorities to work on the issues. “There are operational issues on-ground which impact our ability to seamlessly service the communities as they stay indoors. We are working with the central and state government as an industry to solve these challenges,” a Flipkart spokesperson told Business Insider. A Zomato spokesperson told Business Insider that these are unprecedented times. “The government has provided strong guidance which we are adhering by and trying our best to execute on the ground. Coordinating with multiple local authorities is challenging however, we are hoping to iron this out soon,” said the spokesperson As people stay at home, they are relying more and more on online deliveries. But if these issues continue to rise, it could lead to the delay and cancellation of thousands of orders from across the country. Perhaps, having a uniform for delivery agents could be the answer, but one of the e-commerce giants told Business Insider that most of the companies already have an uniform and it hasn’t helped. All the e-commerce companies are appealing to the government to sort out problems for seamless deliveries of essential supplies. “A suggestion would be to issue access permits / ID cards to staff engaged in essential services such as grocery delivery, medicines, food delivery, and others,” suggested Milkbasket. As many states move from lockdown to curfews, the agents will have to be issued curfew passes which is another roadblock that e-commerce companies have to overcome. So those who are in isolation stay in isolation and don’t spread it to others,” said Sangeeta Reddy, joint managing director, Apollo Hospitals Group. SBI, HUL, and Deutsche Bank will take care of cost of isolation. The initiative will help hospitals treat severely infected patients. “The much needed beds in hospitals will not be blocked by people who only need isolation and don’t require advanced medical facilities.” “This initiative will help us flatten the curve and save a lot of lives. Taking into account the large population of the country, the need for isolation is very very critical to ensure that the disease doesn’t spread,” said Kaushik Shaparia, CEO of Deutsche Bank India. ‘Project Stay I will reduce the load on the healthcare system’ The development comes as most of the people in India stay with their families and the whole purpose of self isolation is lost, even if they are at their homes. “Many families in India have 4- 5 members and most of them share the same facilities and toilets, this fails the purpose of self-isolation if one the family members is at high risk of COVID-19 and is advised to do so. Project Stay I will not only reduce the load on the healthcare system by creating clean, comfortable isolation and quarantine facilities for individuals who have no need for active medical intervention but also provide a solution to such families,” Reddy said. Almost half of the rooms in Oyo would be made available free of cost, for those who can not afford to pay for the services. These will be across locations like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata. “Our partnership with Apollo Hospitals has been developed to ensure we utilise capacity where possible to create highly sanitised pay-per-use quarantine facilities under the guidance and supervision of medical professionals. The company has also seen its EBITDA loss has widened by 5.7% from $277 million in FY19 to $293 million in FY20. “While COVID-19 has impacted the size of our business, it has accelerated our journey to profitability. In terms of the size of the business, COVID-19 has set us back by a year or so – but a year is only a small blip when you are building a company for the next 100 years,” wrote Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal in a blog. In the first quarter of FY21, with most restaurants being shut and operating on a takeaway only business, Zomato reported a revenue of $41 million and loss of $12 million. But Goyal believes that the COVID-19 pandemic has made their business healthy. “In July 2020, we estimate our monthly burn rate to land under $1m, while our revenue should land at ~60% of pre-COVID peaks ($23m per month). We expect to make complete recovery over the next 3-6 months while continuing to maintain tight control on costs/profitability,” he wrote. While Zomato had laid off 13% of its workforce due to the coronavirus pandemic, 75% of its employees volunteered for partial salary cuts resulting in a total reduction of 14% in payroll costs. However, the original salaries have now been reinstated and the burn rate of July includes the salary costs, said Goyal. Meanwhile, Zomato’s FY20 India food delivery Gross Merchandising Volume grew by 108% over FY19. “ In Q1 FY20, we used to make a contribution margin of –₹47 per order; in Q1 FY21, we made a contribution margin of +₹27 per order,” wrote Goyal.
