"The board of directors of the company through resolution passed by circulation on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 have approved 2nd interim dividend of Rs 6 per equity share i.e. 300 per cent on face value of Rs 2 per share for the Financial Year 2023-24 amounting to Rs 2,535.19 crores," the company said in a stock exchange filing. The interim dividend will be paid within stipulated timelines, it said. Hindustan Zinc board approves dividend of Rs 2,535.19 crore

About one-third of the people in the world suffer from sleep disorders which are mainly caused by a sedentary lifestyle, medical experts said. Sleep reduction causes insulin resistance leading to obesity, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal disorders and respiratory disorders. King George's Medical University (KGMU) Vice Chancellor <keyword id="7304685" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lt-gen-bipin-puri" source="Orion">Lt Gen Bipin Puri</keyword> said, "These can be prevented by a healthy diet, 15-20 minutes exercise, and leaving electronic gadgets two hours before going to sleep. Drugs are needed in extreme cases." He said, "If you are not able to sleep for at least five hours at a stretch in a day or have disrupted sleep patterns for more than three weeks, it could be insomnia or sleep apnea, which if ignored, could cause high blood pressure, fatigue, depression or anxiety and loss of concentration." He said that while an adult needs around 7 hours of sound sleep daily, a newborn must sleep for 18 hours and children up to 6 years for 12 hours. Prof <keyword id="6368646" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ved-prakash" source="Orion">Ved Prakash</keyword>, head of respiratory critical care medicine, KGMU, who is in charge of the comprehensive sleep centre, said, "Extended shifts, prolonged exposure to light, stress, anxiety, addiction to alcohol, caffeinated drinks and smoking, are the main reasons adversely affecting the body clock in adults." He said that the modern lifestyle does not give enough time to the body to relax and recharge itself, which leads to decreased secretion of neurotransmitters-serotonin and dopamine - which play a vital role in sleep quality. "Actually, the brain needs serotonin to make melatonin, a hormone that regulates your sleep-wake cycle while dopamine makes us happy. When both are secreted in reduced amount, they cause disruption in sleep and anxiety," he said. Faculty at the physiology department, KGMU, Prof <keyword id="185978" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narsingh-verma" source="Orion">Narsingh Verma</keyword> said that light exposure also reduces the sleep of new-borns and children which adversely impacts the physical strength of children as the growth hormone secretes less. He said that a person facing sleep issues should take a balanced diet which is rich in green vegetables, fruits and sprouts as they have micronutrients and vitamins. While vitamin C is often associated with immunity, study after study has shown that vitamin C plays a powerful role in sleep quality. One-third of world's population suffers from sleep disorders say medical experts

In 2020, Bangladesh surpassed its larger neighbour India in <a href="https://www.newindianexpress.com/business/2021/may/20/bangladesh-beats-india-in-per-capita-income-2304942.html">per capita income (PCI)</a>. Hindustan Zinc is also working on setting up a maintenance and processing factory in Gujarat to supply Zinc to other South Asian countries. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hindustan Zinc, <keyword id="1583550" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-Misra">Arun Misra</keyword>, told Business Insider that 70% of the Gujarat plant’s 0.3 million tonne capacity will go to Bangladesh and other Southeast Asian markets. Currently, miners in Africa, mostly Chinese, sell commodities to South Korea for processing Asian markets and conversion to zinc (by competitors), before hitting the South Asian markets. “We realised that we [Hindustan Zinc] could stop that traffic midway and do it in Gujarat and then convert to metal and then supply to Southeast Asia, which is going very fast and very stable economies as of now,” CEO Misra told Business Insider in an exclusive interview as he completed his first year in the corner office. The company currently has facilities located in five regions of Rajasthan and a zinc-lead processing and refining facilities as well as a silver refinery at Pantnagar in Uttarakhand. Misra also highlighted two points behind their latest interest in the Bangladesh market. First, the country’s economy has been doing well. Second, Bangladesh is a land of rivers, which leads to more corrosion of metal. “We'll have more zinc galvanisation in their country. So, nearby countries have a good future for zinc,” he added. Corrosion is a degradation of a material, especially metal, due to chemical reactions. Most metals are susceptible to corrosion and the most common form of corrosion is rusting. Water can make metal rust faster, which makes it almost a necessity to apply a protective zinc coating (galvanising) to steel or iron. More importantly, Bangladesh is witnessing an economic upswing ⁠— an average growth of<a href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.KD.ZG?locations=BD&amp;name_desc=false"> 5.4%</a> in gross domestic product (GDP) in last 5 years ⁠— leading to a massive investments in infrastructure. The government in Dhaka plans to increase its spending on infrastructure as well. According to Bangladesh’s Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the country needs to invest approximately <a href="https://www.trade.gov/country-commercial-guides/bangladesh-infrastructure-development-and-engineering-services">$25 billion</a> annually till 2030 to meet its infrastructure needs. It will also help the country maintain as well as further<a href="https://www.adb.org/sites/default/files/project-documents/51311/51311-001-rrp-en.pdf"> accelerate </a>its GDP growth momentum. And, Misra sees opportunities unravelling there. “We have just entered Bangladesh. Looking at it, there's a possibility [of business growing], directly we are entering. So we are not yet a big mover inside Bangladesh, as of now. According to a report by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/govt-approves-stake-sale-in-hindustan-zinc-says-report-stock-rallies-7/articleshow/91784848.cms">ET Now</a>, the government has approved the sale of its 29.5% stake in Hindustan Zinc, which is worth nearly ₹40,000 crore. The stake sale was challenged in the Supreme Court last year, but the court’s verdict cleared the path for the government to pare its holdings. The LIC stake sale leaves the government with a balance of a little less than ₹40,000 crore – all of which could be realized by offloading its stake in Hindustan Zinc – with more than 10 months left in FY23. The government’s urgency to pare its holdings could be a sign of a bigger problem, which is fiscal deficit. Fiscal deficit refers to a shortfall in the government’s income compared to its spending. The government could be looking at a much higher disinvestment in the current financial year to offset a portion of deficit to keep it within manageable limits. The ET Now report adds that the government could also be looking at paring its stake in consumer goods and tobacco giant ITC. A dovish policy, on the other hand, favours expansionary monetary policies with low interest rates to boost demand. In his interview, the RBI governor, Shaktikanta Das underlined that he expects the government to be in a position to manage the current account deficit ‘comfortably’. It’s not clear if Das factored in the government disinvesting to keep the deficit under control, but it is something that should become clearer with time. Therefore, the smaller businesses will get a better price for the inputs, and be able to protect their profit margin. China has been increasingly wary of the global surge in prices of key raw materials used in industry. Since the pandemic has curbed the consumer’s purchasing power, companies have not been able to pass on the rising cost of commodities, and therefore, the profit margins are getting squeezed. Last week, the cost of raw materials, measured by the producer price index in China, hit the highest level in 12 years. The policy measure will go beyond stopping commodity imports. The state firms will need the inputs to keep their business running. China’s National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration will soon <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/QUS0XZT1UM1B">release</a> state stockpiles of metals including copper, <keyword id="126663" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="aluminum">aluminum</keyword> and zinc, instead of relying on global suppliers. The metals will be sold in batches to fabricators and manufacturers. China has been the world’s biggest guzzler of commodities for many years. However, in recent times, the world’s second largest economy has shifted its focus to domestic consumption instead of being an exporter to the world at large. Globally, some doctors continue to prescribe these <keyword id="11911136" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="supplements" source="Orion">supplements</keyword> in hopes of promoting a healthy immune response.But a <a href="https://clinicalnutritionespen.com/article/S2405-4577(22)00002-X/fulltext">scientific review</a> from the University of Toledo published last month found no evidence that taking zinc, vitamin C, or vitamin D reduces the risk of dying from COVID-19.The analysis looked at 26 peer-reviewed studies from around the world that encompassed more than 5,600 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Patients who took zinc and vitamin C did so after they were admitted to the hospital. The study also included patients who took vitamin D before their COVID-19 diagnoses, as well as some who took the supplement after they got sick.Across all of these scenarios, vitamins didn't seem to lower the risk of mortality.But vitamin D reduced the length of a person's hospital stay if they started taking the supplement after their COVID-19 diagnosis, whereas zinc and vitamin C did not.Dr. Azizullah Beran, the study's lead researcher and a resident at the University of Toledo, said more studies are needed to know if vitamin D is an effective COVID-19 treatment."If it showed benefit in patients with normal vitamin D levels, then for sure you can say, 'Oh, vitamin D works,'" Beran said. Vitamins C and D also have <a href="https://www.jimmunol.org/content/188/5/2127">anti-inflammatory properties</a> that may help ward off severe disease.Based on this knowledge, Beran said, some countries have promoted "vitamin cocktails" for COVID-19. Early in the pandemic, Egypt <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7547825/">required doctors to prescribe vitamin D, vitamin C, and zinc</a> to symptomatic COVID-19 patients. "At that time, there was no enough evidence for that, but they just made this conclusion based on non-COVID data," Beran said.As of August 2021, Egypt's <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpubh.2021.696082/full">COVID-19 treatment protocol</a> still included zinc and vitamin C. India also commonly prescribes vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc for COVID-19, according to <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/action/showPdf?pii=S2214-109X%2821%2900252-7">a June 2021 editorial</a> in The Lancet.But the National Institutes of Health has found "insufficient evidence" to support <a href="https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/therapies/supplements/vitamin-c/">vitamin C</a>, <a href="https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/therapies/supplements/vitamin-d/">vitamin D</a>, or <a href="https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/therapies/supplements/zinc/">zinc</a> as COVID-19 <keyword id="12019702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="treatments" source="Orion">treatments</keyword>.Beran said some patients in his Ohio clinic still believe vitamins will improve their COVID-19 symptoms.There's no evidence for those beliefs, either: A February 2021 study found that <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2776305">zinc and vitamin C supplements neither reduced COVID-19 symptoms</a> nor led to faster recovery.Taking too much of a supplement can also result in unnecessary, and sometimes dangerous, side effects. <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/vitamin-c/faq-20058030">High doses of vitamin C</a> may cause diarrhea and nausea, while <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26053339/">high doses of vitamin D</a> may cause nausea, vomiting, kidney injury, or pancreatitis.<h2>COVID-19 patients who are vitamin-deficient may benefit from supplements</h2><div type="image" title="COVID patient" height="3669" width="5500" msid="89689589" hostid="261"></div>Beran's study didn't consider whether hospitalized patients were deficient in certain vitamins before they got sick. For COVID-19 patients with <keyword id="13211198" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="vitamin-deficiencies" source="Orion">vitamin deficiencies</keyword>, taking supplements could help their immune system, but that's not the same as a direct treatment for COVID-19."There is strong data about the association of vitamin D deficiency and worse outcomes of COVID-19," Beran said, adding, "If someone has vitamin D deficiency, his immune system is not going to be as good as a patient with normal vitamin D."A <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32880651/">September 2020 study</a> found people with vitamin D deficiencies had an increased risk of testing positive for COVID-19. A recent <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/study-identifies-link-between-vitamin-d-levels-and-covid-19-severity-2022-2">Israeli study</a> also found that about half of people who were vitamin D deficient before getting COVID-19 developed severe illness, compared to less than 10% of people who had sufficient levels of the vitamin in their blood. At the very least, Beran said, patients with vitamin deficiencies should take supplements to restore these essential nutrients."If someone is admitted with COVID and, incidentally, you found that the patient had severe vitamin D deficiency, of course treating that patient with vitamin D will help," he said. Vaccines remain our most important tool for preventing severe COVID-19, he added, and <a href="https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/therapies/immunomodulators/corticosteroids/#:~:text=Multiple%20randomized%20trials%20indicate%20that,to%20lung%20injury%20and%20multisystem">steroids</a> our most effective method of treating it. As of 23 April, India has 25,52,940 active cases and has witnessed 189,549 deaths, and the air is grim, to say the least. With a near-collapse of the healthcare system, people are understandably grasping at straws to try anything to keep the virus at bay or, if infected, help alleviate the symptoms. Since healthcare professionals are hard to reach, people are resorting to the next best thing, the internet, which is rife with suggestions and recommendations that are sometimes helpful, but most are borderline dangerous. But what is worrying is that doctors, too, are “recommending medications that have no proper evidence from clinical trials to back them up. One of these drugs is <keyword id="7429144" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ivermectin">Ivermectin</keyword>,” a concerned Dr Ghazzali Ahmad, who works in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) as a frontline accident and emergency doctor tells Business Insider. He adds, “Don’t start randomly taking <keyword id="1056953" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="azithromycin">Azithromycin</keyword> and Ivermectin and large quantities of <keyword id="90405" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zinc">zinc</keyword> and vitamin D. Covid-19 is (caused by) a virus, not a bacteria or parasite.” Dr Vipin Vashishtha — former convener, IAP Committee on immunisation and paediatrician at Mangla Hospital and Research Centre in Uttar Pradesh — echoes Dr. Ahmad’s opinion. <div type="ExtQuote" text="“Self-medication should be avoided. Very few drugs are effective treatments of Covid-19. They include steroids, anticoagulants and, to some extent, Remdesivir. No other drug provides consistent, reliable benefit. All these drugs should be used under the strict supervision of a clinician.&quot;" auname="Dr Vipin Vashishtha"></div> He adds that starting medicines without a physician’s advice may sometimes give the patient a false sense of security, and the key phases of illness may be missed. According to Dr Vashishtha, an essential parameter is constantly monitoring your oxygen saturation with an oximeter. Any drop below 94% should be treated as a red flag and demands urgent referral. “Patients sometimes may remain comfortable even at a low saturation level which is termed ‘happy hypoxia’ and the dip may be easily missed if one is not monitoring their oxygen saturation. Many self-administered drugs may further complicate the course of illness if not used at an appropriate time. For example, some patients start oral steroids in the first few days of illness that may suppress the normal immune responses,” he adds. Medications, their efficacy and side effects <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Budesonide" comment="subhead" text="Budesonide"><keyword id="1368551" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="budesonide">Budesonide</keyword></cmsannotation> Is an inhaled steroid used in the management of bronchial asthma. Its role in treating Covid-19 is not yet confirmed, but few <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(21)00160-0/fulltext">reports</a> have indicated some benefits. Early administration of inhaled Budesonide reduces the likelihood of needing urgent medical care and reduces recovery time. If a patient is incessantly coughing, he/she can take it at home. The medicine has only a few minor side effects like redness, dryness of mouth, etc. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Dexamethasone" comment="subhead" text="Dexamethasone">Dexamethasone</cmsannotation> This is one of the very few medicines with strong evidence of providing definite benefits in Covid management and is one of the few drugs with <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/coronavirus-disease-covid-19-dexamethasone">WHO backing</a>. This corticosteroid is used to combat a variety of conditions due to its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant properties. Strong evidence suggests that treatment with dexamethasone reduces 28-day mortality in patients with Covid-19 who receive respiratory support. However, there are no benefits (and the possibility of harm) among patients who do not require oxygen. It should be started after one week of getting the illness. During treatment, typical side effects include high blood sugar level, acidity, gastric ulcer, exacerbation or superadded infection (added infections over an existing disease). <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Remdesivir" comment="subhead" text="Remdesivir">Remdesivir</cmsannotation> It is an antiviral drug used initially in the treatment of the Ebola virus. There is still no incontrovertible proof of its efficacy against Covid-19. The drug has no impact on final mortality, and at best, can reduce the duration of the illness. The drug does help reduce viral replication, and if used, it should be used only in hospitalised, moderate-to-severe cases with low SpO2 and require oxygen. It has no prophylactic (preventing an illness) role and should not be administered at home. The drug may have serious side effects on the gastrointestinal, hepatic and renal system. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Becozinc" comment="subhead" text="Becozinc">Becozinc</cmsannotation>This has a high dose of around 50 mg of elemental zinc. There is no evidence that it has some impact either on the duration of the disease or outcome. High amounts of zinc may cause some adverse effects like nausea, vomiting, stomachache, diarrhoea, headaches, anorexia, muscle weakness, etc. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Vitamin C tablets" comment="subhead" text="Vitamin C tablets"><keyword id="20923" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vitamin-C">Vitamin C</keyword> tablets</cmsannotation>Although vitamin C is known to have antioxidant effects, the clinical implication of its use in Covid pneumonia is not established. There is no role of this drug in the prevention of Covid-19. There are reports of the use of high-dose intravenous vitamin C as part of treatment for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) associated with COVI-19 infection, but there are no randomised controlled trials or concrete evidence to support its use. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Doxycycline/Azithromycin" comment="subhead" text="Doxycycline/Azithromycin">Doxycycline/Azithromycin</cmsannotation>Antibiotics do not work against viruses; they only work on bacterial infections. COVID-19 is caused by a virus. Antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment of COVID-19. In hospitals, physicians will sometimes use antibiotics to prevent or treat secondary bacterial infections, which can be a complication of COVID-19 in severely ill patients. They should only be used as directed by a physician to treat a bacterial infection. These antibiotics may have some side effects like diarrhoea, oral ulcers, among others. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Antipyretic drugs" comment="subhead" text="Antipyretic drugs">Antipyretic drugs</cmsannotation>This is a mandatory addendum to any Covid-management protocol. It is used for symptomatic relief for fever, headache, muscular pains, etc. However, its use should be restricted to provide temporary relief to associated symptoms. High doses of antipyretics (drugs that reduce fever) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may lead to gastric irritation, acidity, and liver dysfunctions. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="FabiFlu" comment="subhead" text="FabiFlu">FabiFlu</cmsannotation>This oral antiviral drug was approved for influenza in Japan and has shown potent in vitro activity (lab studies) against SARS-CoV-2. However, there is no evidence that this antiviral provides some protection against Covid-19. Some studies have shown that it can reduce the duration of Covid-19 by only 2-3 days. However, quality evidence is lacking. It has some side effects like diarrhoea, hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid), psychiatric symptoms, etc. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Ivermectin" comment="subhead" text="Ivermectin">Ivermectin</cmsannotation> This is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic agent used against worm infestation. This is another widely used drug, but there is no evidence that it works. No clinical trials have reported a clinical benefit for Ivermectin in patients with Covid-19. The common side effects include tiredness, loss of energy, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Effectiveness of non-medical recommendations Masking: This is most definitely the way to go. In the current scenario, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/16/cdc-director-says-face-masks-may-provide-more-protection-than-coronavirus-vaccine-.html">some believe</a> it may be more beneficial than even vaccines. Steam inhalation: The steam inhalation practice is risky, and there is no scientific proof that it can prevent a <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> infection. Further, this steam inhalation can be unsafe and may lead to burns. Lying on your stomach to reduce breathlessness: Called <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7402434/">awake proning</a>, this technique helps tackle ARDS. Because of fluid accumulation, patients suffering from ARDS need mechanical ventilation since their lungs are unable to oxygenate blood on their own. Lying on the stomach relieves the excess pressure of fluid build-up around the lung tissues. Smelling a concoction of camphor, clove, carom seeds (ajwain), and eucalyptus oil tied in a muslin bag can help improve oxygen levels and congestion: No evidence that they provide any beneficial effects. Drinking a concoction of black pepper powder, honey, ginger juice will help keep the virus at bay: Again, no evidence to back the same. Divya Coronil: No good-quality evidence. The trials done by the manufacturer had several limitations. Drinking kadha: There is zero evidence that this ayurvedic drink that is primarily a decoction of various herbs and spices helps to combat the virus. But so far, there's no specific studies showing that zinc can treat or improve outcomes in patients with COVID-19. <h2>Antacids like famotidine may reduce risk, but the evidence is poor </h2>Famotidine (commonly known as Pepcid) is an over-the-counter treatment for heartburn and indigestion that works by reducing the amount of acid the stomach produces. There's a little evidence is could benefit COVID-19 patients, with <a href="https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.09.28.20203463v1">one (not-yet-peer-reviewed) pre-print</a> from September 30 showing it may help reduce mortality rates. The systematic review from researchers in New Delhi, India, found that, of 2,643 patients across five studies, those that received famotidine (312 total) were significantly less likely to die or require intensive care. However, the authors acknowledge that the evidence so far is "low quality." More research, such as randomized controlled trials, is needed to show whether famotidine may be an effective treatment aid for coronavirus infections. <h2>Aspirin may help prevent blood clotting and reduce inflammation</h2>The common over-the-counter pain reliever aspirin has been explored as a means of treating coronavirus infections because it can help reduce inflammation and risk of blood clots, both of which have been linked to severe COVID-19 complications.A <a href="https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/study/NCT04365309">clinical trial</a> was launched last spring to study the potential for using aspirin as a treatment for coronavirus, but no results have yet been posted. The body produces more of it at night, to help us become sleepy at bedtime.Synthetic or lab-produced melatonin is sometimes used as a dietary supplement to help treat insomnia, particularly in cases where a person's internal clock has been disrupted, such jet lag or night shift work. There's no specific evidence on whether melatonin influences coronavirus outcomes. What we do know, however, is that good sleep is crucial for a healthy immune system, and that means 7-9 hours a night for most people.  People have started fighting because of the water crisis and have already complained about incidences of water theft. The panchayat (the local self governance system) have urged the people to lock the water drums to avoid such incidents, according to Business Standard. The Parasrampura village has been adopted by <keyword id="115997" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindustan-Zinc">Hindustan Zinc</keyword> — an integrated mining and resources producer of zinc, lead, silver and cadmium— which supplies water in the village. India’s Met Department has issued a red alert and a yellow alert in many districts of the state for the next five days starting from Saturday in view of the intense heat waves gripping many parts of Rajasthan as the temperatures touches over 50 degree celsius in Churu.
