Like the 19-year-old founders of <keyword id="16077786" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zillionaire-india" source="Orion">Zillionaire India</keyword> - a lifestyle jewellery brand offering ‘bling jewellery’ primarily made of silver and/or cubic zirconia. <br /><br />The Jaipur-based startup makes ‘bling jewellery’ popularised by rappers, which is only available for sale on the company website. Zillionaire offers a regular range of earrings, pendants, bracelets, cuffs, etc., along with customised items. The average order value is ₹14,000, while the minimum value for a <a href="https://zillionaireindia.com/pages/custom-work">custom piece is ₹15,000</a>. <br /><br />Founded by Aaditya Fatehpuriya and Raghav Goyal in 2020, the direct-to-customer (D2C) brand has a verified Instagram handle with over <a href="https://www.instagram.com/zillionaireindia/?hl=en">56k followers</a>. The startup made revenue of ₹11 lakh in the first year of its operations. Since then, it has enjoyed a growth rate of 554%, raking in sales to the tune of ₹72 lakh in FY22. In the 7 months of FY23, the company’s year-to-date sales hit ₹1 crore, with a profit of ₹15 lakh. The founders projected total sales worth ₹2 crore in FY23. <br /><br />The startup’s clientele includes celebrities like actors Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, singers Raftaar and B Praak, and director Karan Johar, among others. <br /><br />“We don’t just want to be a jewellery brand. We want to be a lifestyle brand, so that in the future if your chair has the logo of Zillionaire, its value rises. The sky’s the limit for us,” stated Goyal introducing Zillionaire on the show. <br /><br />The founders asked for an investment of ₹50 lakh for 3.3% equity, but went home with an investment of ₹1 crore for 10% equity from shark Anupam Mittal, the founder of Shaadi.com.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="“We’re living what we’re selling”" comment="subhead2" text="“We’re living what we’re selling”"><span data-til="noop">“We’re living what we’re selling”</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />During the pandemic, the two founders, who were 16 at the time and in Grade 11, got to discussing rap music. That’s when they came up with the idea of producing bling jewellery for themselves. They uploaded their designs on Instagram as well, and that’s how Zillionaire was born. <br /><br />At present, both founders look after the design, production, and marketing of the products. Goyal is currently studying at the Parsons School of Design in New York - where Zillionaire India helped him earn a 40% scholarship. <br /><br />On the other hand, Fatehpuriya is involved with Zillionaire full-time. His father has been running a jewellery business for over 30 years, manufacturing and exporting fine jewellery, primarily for women. And now, his father’s company is responsible for Zillionaire India’s production as well. <br /><br />The products are designed by the founders and they pay the cost of production (including the cost of material and labour), per piece to Fatehpuriya’s father’s company. Currently, 30 to 40 pieces are produced daily for Zillionaire. The founders have the vision to generate monthly sales worth ₹2 crore by 2026 and expand into global markets, in Dubai, Australia, and the UK. They’re already available in the US. <br /><br />“We’re living what we’re selling. The knowledge we have of hip-hop and this culture, usually others (jewellery designers) don’t have. We make sure to hit our customers psychologically. We already get opportunities to collaborate with Marvel, FIFA, etc., and create products for them - but they ask for MG (minimum guarantee). We’re a bootstrapped brand currently, and can’t afford that MG. In the future, if brand awareness and consequently sales increase, we can even lower the price, if required,” said Goyal, when asked about what sets Zillionaire India apart. <br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Finding the “king of bling”" comment="subhead2" text="Finding the “king of bling”"><span data-til="noop">Finding the “king of bling”</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />Shark Namita Thapar, executive director at Emcure Pharmaceuticals, backed out at the start stating that the business would not yield 100% return due to existing competition, and high average ticket price.<br /><br />However, the duo impressed the other sharks with their product and vision so much that they had two competing offers.<br /><br />Mittal made the first offer - ₹1 crore for 10% equity, valuing the company at ₹10 crore. This was followed by a joint offer by sharks Aman Gupta (co-founder, boAt), Vineeta Singh (co-founder, Sugar Cosmetics) and Peyush Bansal, (co-founder, Lenskart) – ₹50 lakh for 10% equity, which valued the company at ₹5 crore. <br /><br />Mittal responded to the offer by telling the founders that, “by having just 2-3% equity, no shark will be dedicated to your business. You need someone who has skin in the game. Don’t make a mistake!”<br /><br />The founders ultimately went with a single shark, Mittal, while naming him “the king of bling.”<br /><br />Singh, who wanted to match Mittal’s offer but didn’t because of Gupta, appeared visibly shocked at the decision, while Bansal remarked that “he got it wrong”. <ul class="summary-list"><li>On July 20, <keyword id="25931" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="billionaire">billionaire</keyword> <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> cofounder Jeff Bezos briefly went to <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">space</keyword>.</li><li>Upon returning to Earth, Bezos thanked Amazon's customers for funding his space trip.</li><li>For some <keyword id="758541" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon-Prime">Amazon Prime</keyword> members, it was a gross display of wealth that made them cancel their subscription.</li></ul><p>On July 20, billionaire Amazon cofounder Jeff Bezos <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-launches-to-space-blue-origin-first-human-spaceflight-2021-7">briefly went to space</a> in a rocket from his rocket company, <keyword id="199288" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Blue-Origin">Blue Origin</keyword>.</p><p>Upon return, the former Amazon CEO <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-thanks-amazon-customers-for-paying-trip-to-space-2021-7">thanked Amazon customers and employees</a> for making the trip possible: "I want to thank every Amazon employee and every Amazon customer because you guys paid for all of this," Bezos said during a post-flight press conference. "Seriously, for every Amazon customer out there and every Amazon employee, thank you from the bottom of my heart very much. It's very appreciated."</p><p>Some of those customers he thanked, however, saw the jaunt to space as a good sign to quit paying $120 annually for Amazon's wildly popular <keyword id="46801" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="prime">Prime</keyword> subscription service.</p><p>"You guys, I just canceled my Amazon Prime membership and feel GREAT about it," one such customer said in a private Facebook group post. "I am over paying to shop on a website and/or for a zillionaire's rocket ride. And that's making it harder for employers to mandate vaccines.</a></em></p><p>They were one of several people Insider spoke with who said they canceled their Prime subscription in the days following Bezos' trip to space, who were directly inspired by the trip to cancel.</p><p>For Katie, the decision was a long time coming.</p><p>She signed up for Amazon Prime way back in 2004, and has been a subscriber ever since. "Back then, it simply seemed like a good place to buy books online," Katie, who asked not to be identified with her last name, said.</p><p>But as time went on, reasons to feel differently about Amazon began to build. </p><p>"First, it was realizing how this company negatively affects the publishing industry," she told Insider, in reference to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-did-the-amazon-feud-with-hachette-start-2014-10">Amazon's tumultuous relationship with book publishers</a> over the years. "Then, it was discovering the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-warehouse-workers-have-to-pee-into-bottles-2018-4">abysmal treatment of the warehouse workers</a>. Next, a growing awareness of my own consumerism that was really starting to gross me out."</p><p>For Katie, Bezos' trip to space was the straw that broke the camel's back.</p><div type="image" title="Blue Origin’s New Shepard crew is seen in blue flight outfits sitting in front of the shuttle's capsule.ª" height="2000" width="3000" msid="85245413" hostid="261"></div><p>"I saw a few posts from people in some of my online groups that they finally pulled the plug, and reading all of the positive replies, it's like it just clicked for me."</p><p>A similar situation played out with another former Amazon Prime subscriber, named Katy: Over the years, as more stories about Amazon's treatment of its workers came to light, and she became increasingly aware of the environmental impact of her consuming habits, she began to rethink her Prime subscription.</p><p>"In July of 2020 I started to really budget for the first time," she told Insider. "And seeing that I was spending a great deal of my money on convenience that didn't match my values and could be done in a cheaper way was a big part."</p><p>When Bezos went to space, the decision became clear.</p><p>"The whole thing was such a spectacle of a single person amassing so much wealth that they simply have lost touch with the reality for the average person," Katy said. "I had forgotten to cancel and my membership was renewed. I had moved some money around in my budget to cover the cost of another year, and the coverage actually inspired me to log on and cancel and get a refund instead."</p><p>Though she doesn't regret her decision and isn't considering going back, Katy said she understands why millions of Americans continue to subscribe to Amazon Prime.</p><p>"For many people, Prime and Amazon gives them access to things they cannot get in other ways," she said. Some Amazon customers are cutting Prime after Jeff Bezos' trip to space: 'I am over paying' for 'a zillionaire's rocket ride'

<p>Their last few shows have drawn <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/jul/07/the-rolling-stones-review">rave</a> <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/jul/01/glastonbury-belonged-to-rolling-stones">reviews</a>, and the returns on their earlier <a href="http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/1566296/rolling-stones-top-hot-tours-three-chicago-dates-gross-165-million">shows have been strong.</a></p>
<p>But others have called it <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2352076/Glastonbury-2013-Night-living-dead-Rolling-Stones-rock-festival.html">"the night of the living dead"</a> tour, for reasons <a href="http://www.ganzomag.com/interview-francesco-carrozzini.html">that are perhaps evident.</a> </p>
<p>And the Rolling Stones are already one of the wealthiest bands in the world. Their last tour <a href="http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/1048656/rolling-stones-tour-grosses-more-than-half-a-billion#/news/rolling-stones-tour-grosses-morethan-half-a-billion-1003650410.story">grossed more than half a billion dollars.</a> Mick Jagger is said to be <a href="http://voices.yahoo.com/celebrity-net-worth-rockers-paul-mccartney-bruce-12136312.html">worth more than $300 million</a>, Keith Richards <a href="http://www.therichest.org/celebnetworth/celeb/musician/keith-richards-net-worth/">just a bit less.</a></p>
<p>So why do these guys keep going on tour?</p>
<p>There are three reasons.</p>
<p>First, <strong>digitized music is now virtually worthless</strong>. Prof. Peter Tschmuck, a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna who runs <a href="http://musicbusinessresearch.wordpress.com/">a blog about the economics of the music business</a>, told me the return on investment from selling a digital copy of a song is 12% compared with about 36% for CDs — and that's before that revenue is carved up to various title holders. </p>
<p>Professor Jeff Dorenfeld, Professor of Music Business/Management at the Berklee College of Music, told us songs have been losing value for more than a decade.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">There's very little money made from recorded music anymore. Apple — iTunes is mostly a singles market, Spotify, that kind of service doesn't pay high royalties, radio is not as big as it used to be. So all those revenues are not where they were, and haven't been for the last 15 years.</p>
<p>Second — and luckily in response to item 1 — <strong>touring now generates lots of money.</strong> And it's especially lucrative to be the Rolling Stones. Their last three tours combined will likely have grossed about $1 billion (the mid-2000s "Licks" tour <a href="http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/touring/madonna-s-mdna-tour-makes-boxscore-s-all-1008115942.story">did +$300 million</a>, and the current one <a href="http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/1566296/rolling-stones-top-hot-tours-three-chicago-dates-gross-165-million">could do more than $100 million</a> for a <a href="http://www.rollingstones.com/tickets/">much more limited set of dates</a>). The average ticket price is <a href="http://www.pollstar.com/atpDetail.aspx?SearchBy=R">$370</a>. Bruce Springsteen is only <a href="http://www.pollstar.com/atpDetail.aspx?SearchBy=B">$93.29</a>.</p>
<p>When asked recently by the Guardian's Casper Llewellyn Smith about whether he regrets bassist's Bill Wyman leaving the band in 1993, <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/apr/04/charlies-watts-rolling-stones-drummer-interview">Charlie Watts cracked,</a>"I think he missed out on a very lucrative period in our existence."</p>
<p><div class="image-container" style="width:800px"><div class="image"><p class="source">REUTERS/Mike Blake </p><p class="caption">The band in Anaheim.</p></div></div>Money is money, Dorenfeld says, noting that bands as big as the Stones command supremely high margins on splits with concert promoters and bookers because of the guaranteed interest they draw.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">They're getting more than 60% is my guess (of a show's gross revenues). If the show made $3 million, that's $1.8 million, not counting merch — you walk away with that also. They're unique —  all the ones like them are unique — the deals are much tighter because the revenue from everything else is much greater.</p>
<p>An additional consideration — perhaps not for the band, but for anyone who would think the Stones are wasting everyone's time and perhaps risking ridicule — is that while the band is just the four current members, "Rolling Stones, Inc." likely <strong>employs more than a dozen people full time and hundreds while on the road</strong>. <div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image"><p class="source">Youtube</p><p class="caption">The band in its salad days.</p></div></div>Setting up stages, even for arena tours like the current one, are massive operations that Dorenfeld says can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars a night. "They're a major corporation on the road — they're a company," he says. "They do pay well, many have benefits and healthcare."</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">This final point was probably first ever articulated in 1995 by Larry Mullen Jr. of U2, the band that </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoo_TV_Tour">basically invented blow-out multi-sensory  rock n' roll tours</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">, in Bill Flanagan's </span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/0385311575">"At The End Of The World"</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The biggest responsibility out of all this is the fact that you employ a lot of people and you are responsible for them, responsible for making sure they're taken care of. People's livelihoods are depending on you. I don't like that responsibility too much, but that comes with the territory.</p>
<p>Of course, one does not go on tour merely to keep your entourage happy. But it's part of the equation. </p>
<p>Asking  why the Stones "need" to go on tour leaves out the question of "wanting" to go on tour. They're still ostensibly artists, after all. Here's what Jagger said <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CC8QFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Farticles.chicagotribune.com%2F2013-04-03%2Fentertainment%2Fchi-mick-jagger-interview-20130403_1_songs-rolling-stones-mick-taylor&amp;ei=FMfcUfvsINbi4APcj4CYDg&amp;usg=AFQjCNEMvkkgKNxZ-Sqj8kHVSPRJA0Acmw&amp;sig2=VVlgHNitkP3VFpDfv3Ye7A&amp;bvm=bv.48705608,d.dmg">in an interview with Chicago Tribune rock critic Greg Kot in April</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Everyone had a really good time in the five shows before Christmas (in London, New Jersey and New York). We wanted to see how the band was playing, how people were reacting. <strong>We didn’t get too much moaning or complaining.</strong></p>
<p>Given all of the above, that seems to be a fairly low hurdle to surmount.</p>

Why The Rolling Stones Keep Touring Despite Being Ancient Zillionaires

He started with comments about his eyebrows.</p><p><span>"I would like to share some of my favorite comments, not all of which are hateful," Oliver said. "In fact, one viewer even wrote, 'John Oliver has magnificent eyebrows,' which I appreciated, and I'll tell you why, because no one has called any part of my body magnificent. Ever."</span></p><p><span>Apparently, his eyebrows get a lot of attention from viewers. Another commenter wrote,&#xa0;<span>"John Oliver's eyebrows are alien caterpillars and move independently of each other."</span></span></p><p><span><span>Again, Oliver found the silver lining.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span>"That's okay. That does still technically fall under the umbrella of magnificent. There's no more magnificent eyebrow than one that is sentient and moves independently," the host&#xa0;said. "So you know what? Sorry Cara Delevingne, I'm the new queen of eyebrow thickness. Step off. Step off, Cara!"</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Things started heating up when one commenter said Oliver "<span>looks like a mix of a Pokémon and a child molester." To which the host responded that there was already a&#xa0;<span>Pokémon character that fit that description: Gengar.</span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span>"Look at that creep!" Oliver yelled.<br /></span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span>He then shared a couple comments that said he "badly missed the mark." But the ultimate comment came in the form of a&#xa0;bet for a "zillion dollars," which Oliver gladly accepted.</span></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><span>"To the rest of you, I will see you never. I don't need this s--- anymore," he said of the bet. John Oliver responds to mean and hilarious internet comments

In fact, as a venture capitalist and serial entrepreneur who has made a personal fortune founding or funding more than 30 companies, I have come to the conclusion that a wealth tax would actually increase investment, boost productivity, grow the economy, and create more and better jobs.</p><p>Now, I know what you're thinking: That's crazy talk! For decades, rich guys like me have been selling you tax cuts on the merits of pure economic stimulus. The rich are "job creators," we've told you. The more money we have to invest in creating jobs, the better the economy is for everybody.</p><p>Bullshit.</p><p>To be clear: There is simply no empirical evidence to support the claim that raising top tax rates slows economic growth. When President Bill Clinton hiked taxes, the economy boomed. When President George W. Bush slashed taxes, the economy ultimately collapsed. It wasn't until after most of the Bush tax cuts expired during the Obama administration that the post-Great Recession recovery started to pick up steam - an ongoing recovery that, as uneven as it has been, has grown into the longest economic expansion in U.S. history.</p><p>And then, of course, there's Kansas.</p><p>In 2012, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback famously embarked on what he called a "real live experiment," pitting pure trickle-down theory against economic reality. Unfortunately for Kansans, reality won. After slashing taxes on individuals and corporations to as low as zero, Kansas dramatically lagged its neighbors and the nation in both GDP growth and job creation. Studies from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service, and the centrist Brookings Institute all find that if there is any statistically significant correlation between top tax rates and growth, the slope is positive. "The argument that income tax cuts raise growth is repeated so often that it is sometimes taken as gospel," the Brookings authors noted. "However, theory, evidence, and simulation studies tell a different and more complicated story."</p><p>You see, the problem with today's economy isn't that rich people like me don't have enough capital to invest; it's that we're not productively investing the glut of capital we already have. And it's a problem greatly amplified by the dramatic rise of income and wealth inequality over recent decades. Since 1989, the top 1% of Americans have grown $21 trillion richer, while the bottom 50% have grown $900 billion poorer. We in the top 0.1% now own more wealth than the bottom 90% of Americans combined. And this gets to the real cause of our nation's chronically slow growth in wages, productivity, investment, and output: our accelerating crisis of economic inequality. We are concentrating cash in the hands of people and corporations who already have more money than we know what to do with, while starving consumers of the spending power that accounts for 70% of GDP.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wealth-tax-definition-explained-elizabeth-warren-2019-7">Wealth tax explainer: Why Elizabeth Warren and billionaires like George Soros alike are calling for a specialized tax on the ultra-wealthy</a></em></p><p>The anti-growth consequences of this hoarding of wealth can be seen in the precipitous decline in what economists call the "velocity of money" - the rate at which dollars recirculate through the economy. During the years preceding the Great Recession, every dollar in circulation typically changed hands about 17 times over the course of a given year. For example, you spend a dollar on coffee, which the coffee shop pays to the barista in wages, who in turn spends it on a burger, and so on. But in recent years, each dollar in circulation is being spent an average of only<br />five times a year - one of the slowest rates on record. This means that each dollar in circulation today is generating 70% less economic activity than a dollar did just ten years ago. What explains this dramatic slowdown in the velocity of money? "The answer lies in the private sector's dramatic increase in their willingness to hoard money instead of spend it," explained the St. Louis Fed in a gloomy 2014 blog post.</p><p>So, how do we get money flowing back through the economy again in the face of such unprecedented hoarding wealth? How do we deliver the good jobs and good wages American workers desperately need?</p><p>Raise taxes on the rich. Really.</p><p>Raise taxes on the rich, and almost anything the federal government does with the revenue will pump more money through the economy than what the wealthy are doing with our hoarded cash today. Tax the rich to put money back in the hands of the American people through middle-class tax cuts, and corporations will expand production and payrolls to meet the resulting spike in consumer demand. Tax the rich to invest in roads, transit, bridges, health care, schools, and to transition to a green energy economy, and we will create millions of good-paying jobs while<br />building the physical and human infrastructure on which our collective prosperity relies.</p><p>If top tax rates were high, profits low, private investment capital scarce, unemployment rising, and inflation out of control, a wealth tax might not be the best idea. But that's not the economy we're living in today. What our economy needs now is to get those trillions of dollars of hoarded cash off the sidelines, and back into the hands of working- and middle-class Americans.</p><p>A wealth tax would not just be fair, it would be pro-growth. And don't let the trickle-downers tell you otherwise.</p><p class="tagline">This is an opinion column. Convention speakers include lots of Trump children and several conservative culture war figures.</p><p><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/08/24/world/asia/24reuters-health-coronavirus-hongkong-reinfection.html"><strong>Scientists have documented the first confirmed reinfection with COVID. </strong></a>A young man tested positive twice, more than four months apart. Rigorous analysis confirms it was a different infection the second time. This confirms expectations there would be some cases of early reinfection, and complicates the quest for a vaccine. Meanwhile, Trump is trying to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-experimental-oxford-coronavirus-vaccine-before-us-election-2020-8">fast-track a lightly tested British vaccine</a> before Election Day, which deeply worries scientists. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/marco-laura-hurricanes-possible-hit-gulf-coast-2020-8"><strong>Twin hurricanes could hit the Gulf Coast this week. </strong></a>Marco could hit Louisiana on Monday, while tropical storm Laura is on track to landfall in the area on Thursday. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/picture-details-jacob-blake-black-man-shot-by-police-kenosha-2020-8"><strong>Jacob Blake, a Black man shot by the police seven times in Kenosha, Wisconsin, is in intensive care after surgery. </strong></a>A viral video of the shooting has led to protests and outrage. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kushner-sourced-covid-ventilators-from-russia-that-didnt-work-report-2020-8"><strong>Jared Kushner brokered a deal to get 45 ventilators from Russia. </strong></a>And every single one of them was faulty. </p><h2><strong>VIEWS OF THE DAY</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Trump rushmore" height="1000" width="2000" msid="77728699" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p><strong>RNC 2020: We believe in nothing except Trump</strong></p><p>President Trump <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gop-crusade-against-aca-obamacare-during-pandemic-is-terrible-2020-6">was asked in June</a> by his super-duper number one Fox News fan Sean Hannity what he hoped to do as Leader of the Free World during a second term. </p><p>Trump, in response, rambled about "the word experience" and that he had been to the nation's capital many times but had "never slept over in Washington." He never articulated a single policy ambition or even a vague, grand vision for the country.</p><p>With the Republican National Convention (RNC) set to kick off its four-day run in Charlotte tonight, the entity once known as the <keyword id="107894" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Republican-Party">Republican Party</keyword> has taken the lead of its Dear Leader: It stands for nothing at all, other than Trump. </p><p>It's not a Grand Old Party anymore, it's just a host for a Trump personality cult. </p><p>One of the requisite features of a party convention is a committee of delegates negotiating and agreeing to a party platform. Such platforms are non-binding and ceremonial, but they do provide a window into the party's id every four years.</p><p>But given the limitations presented by the coronavirus pandemic, <a href="https://prod-cdn-static.gop.com/media/documents/RESOLUTION_REGARDING_THE_REPUBLICAN_PARTY_PLATFORM.pdf?_ga=2.109560193.504857691.1598219603-2087748323.1598219603">the RNC said in a statement</a> that it "did not want a small contingent of delegates formulating a new platform without the breadth of perspectives within the ever-growing Republican movement" and would instead simply "continue to enthusiastically support the President's America-first agenda."</p><p>That might be a plausible excuse had the Democrats not had an almost-entirely virtual convention last week and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/19/us/politics/democratic-party-platform.html">somehow come up with a 2020 platform</a>. </p><p>The lack of a fresh RNC platform for 2020 matters little in the scheme of things. Voters don't refer to them, politicians don't necessarily adhere to them, and no one remembers them any more than a few days after they're introduced. </p><p>But punting on a platform this year shows that the GOP as presently constituted stands for nothing besides fealty to its Trump.</p><p>As <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/08/24/republicanmeltdown-trump-convention-400039">Politico's Tim Alberta</a> puts it: "The supposed canons of GOP orthodoxy — limited government, free enterprise, institutional conservation, moral rectitude, fiscal restraint, global leadership — have in recent years gone from elastic to expendable."</p><p>What's replaced the Republicans' nominal principles is a reactionary populism that defines itself by its enemies: the media, immigrants, and "the libs." </p><p>This was a winning strategy in 2016, thanks in no small part to the electoral college and <a href="https://theoutline.com/post/1422/shattered-hillary-clinton-campaign?zd=1&amp;zi=y26xgxangxan">Hillary Clinton's historically inept campaign</a>. It could very well win in 2020. But either way, the GOP has obliterated whatever it claimed to stand for. There's no going back. "Republican" is just the brand name for Trumpism. </p><p>"Twilight of Democracy" author <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anne-applebaum-twilight-of-democracy-harpers-letter-authoritarianism-poland-hungary-2020-8">Anne Applebaum recently told me</a> that the Republican Party  "needs to lose, and lose badly, if it's going to recover and become the broad, multiracial, center-right party that America needs once again."</p><p>Should Trump win, or should enough congressional Republicans win in November, a party reckoning is unlikely. </p><p>What we'll see instead is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-laura-loomer-marjorie-greene-qanon-gop-party-conspiracy-theory-2020-8">more unhinged QAnon candidates on Republican tickets</a>, mainstream Republicans bending to their will to keep their caucus together, and the next Trumpist in line (Don Jr.? <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tucker-carlsons-2024-presidential-campaign-seen-in-monologues-ratings-surge-2020-7">Tucker Carlson</a>?) ready to fill the role of demagogue-in-waiting. <em>— <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/anthony-l-fisher">Anthony Fisher</a></em></p><p><strong>Everything is <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword> and it's exhausting.</strong></p><p>Another week of conventions, which is another reminder that in 2020 America, everything is politics. </p><p>Are your kids going back to school in person? That depends on how blue or red your state is, not on the local infection rate. Is your conference going to play college football? If you're in a conservative part of the country, it probably is! Must you wear a mask in the store? On the street? Is <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/22/politics/melania-trump-rose-garden-restoration/index.html">Melania's redesign of the White House Rose Garden </a>beautiful or hideous? </p><p>Why is everything politics? </p><p>Why does any fight about anything — aesthetics, sports, science, art — now have exactly the same two sides? Why is everyone always on the same team? It's boring. It's exhausting. And it's dehumanizing. When you're always up against the same people, you become less and less human to each other. </p><p>Wouldn't it be nice to have an argument about, well, anything, that didn't ultimately revert to "Trump"? Wouldn't it be nice to squabble with your best friend about something mildly important? Or make common cause with a nemesis about a trivial matter? <em>— DP</em></p><p><em><div type="image" title="Trump, McConell" height="1000" width="2000" msid="77728702" hostid="261"></div></em></p><p><strong>Of course Trump's coronavirus relief executive order didn't help</strong></p><p>Shocking no one, the executive orders (EOs) Trump signed attempting to force the states to dole out more coronavirus aid didn't work. Only one state (Arizona) has implemented Trump's measure to add $300 a week to unemployment aid. The rest of these states are confused, and recognize that a piecemeal solution to this problem is no solution at all. They need the federal government to get back to work and pass a law.</p><p>But Trump's EOs basically blew up already-fraught negotiations between the White House and House Democrats. Now Congress is on vacation. Meanwhile Goldman Sachs estimates that the end of one benefit from the previous aid bill — a $600 per week federal supplement to unemployment checks — will drain $70 billion worth of Americans personal income this month alone.</p><p>This seems intentional. Sen. <keyword id="192852" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mitch-McConnell">Mitch McConnell</keyword> had a terrible time getting the bill through his caucus. Despite the fact that coronavirus cases are still surging around the country, the libertarian wing of the GOP didn't want to keep signing checks. As a result, the bill that came out of the Senate was so far from what would be acceptable to House Democrats that it was going to take weeks of negotiation to get something passable to the floor.</p><p>So, Trump basically just said "screw it." He burst into negotiations like the Kool-Aid Man and now we've got nothing.</p><p>Trump's EOs gave him the opportunity to look like he was doing something on TV, which is always enough to satisfy this White House. The Senate got to avoid working on a bill that it hates. If you're incredibly cynical (and these people are) you could see this as a win, even though the biggest losers here are Americans in desperate need.</p><p>Back in April I wrote that even after lockdown, Americans would live<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-world-economy-will-shrink-after-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic-2020-4"> in a shrunken world</a> — shrunken by the fact that human interaction would have to be limited until there's a vaccine. Economic transactions are mostly human interactions, so you see where this is going. A coronavirus world is one of naturally depressed demand even in the best case scenario, where the government is doing all it can. We don't live in that scenario, 170,000 people are dead and all Trump can say is "it is what it is."</p><p>Now we have<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/08/20/us-has-two-economies-how-much-longer-will-losing-side-stand-that/"> two economies</a>, as Catherine Rampell put it over at WaPo. One belongs to the mostly white-collar workers who can work from home, own stocks, and can keep saving money. They were fine before and they're fine now. Their comfort is being reflected in the stock market, where valuations seem to be leaping over this crisis entirely. That's because the people who own and trade stocks have no problem thinking about a post-coronavirus future. Unlike the rest of America, they're not trying to figure out how to survive day by day.</p><p>That brings us to the other economy in which more Americans live. In that economy of mostly blue-collar workers, jobs have barely recovered and many businesses have not reopened. Home mortgage payment delinquencies are at their<a href="https://www.mba.org/2020-press-releases/august/mortgage-delinquencies-spike-in-the-second-quarter-of-2020"> highest rate</a> since the financial crisis.<a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/more-americans-go-hungry-amid-coronavirus-pandemic-census-shows-11597570200"> People are going hungry.</a> Wall Street is starting to call this a "K-shaped recovery." Some people are going up, even more people are going down.</p><p>The middle class was evaporating before, but now it's being sucked dry. None of the president's dog and pony show circus antics are changing that. We need Congress to do its job so Americans can go back to their jobs one day, hopefully soon. <em>— <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/linette-lopez">Linette Lopez</a></em></p><div type="image" title="giant panda national zoo panda cub birth" height="1500" width="3000" msid="77728705" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Another Giant Panda baby at the Zoo, another win for China. </strong></p><p>The Giant Panda Mei Xiang gave birth to a cub Friday night at Washington's National Zoo, and the local and national media are predictably gaga. It's a "<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/zoo-panda-gives-birth/2020/08/21/c5b1f7b2-df30-11ea-809e-b8be57ba616e_story.html">miracle</a>" cub because Mei Xiang's the oldest American panda to give birth in captivity, and because the zookeepers managed the pregnancy through the pandemic. If the cub lives, <a href="https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/brief-history-giant-pandas-zoo">it will be her fourth.</a></p><p>China's Giant Panda lend-lease program is one of the cleverest examples of public diplomacy in the modern world. Exploiting the world's crush on the black-and-white semi-bears, China rents pandas out to zoos for huge fees — $1 million a year <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/panda-most-overrated-animal-ever-2018-5#:~:text=The%20Chinese%20government%20owns%20nearly,one%2Dtime%20%24400%2C000%20baby%20tax.">has been reported</a>. The zoos then pay monstrous amounts to feed and care for the animals, $500,000 a year per bear, and undertake captive breeding programs. China owns all cubs, which are repatriated to China at age four and enrolled in <a href="https://www.pandasinternational.org/panda-reserves/">China's elaborate breeding, research, and re-wilding program</a>. (Mei Xiang's first three offspring were all repatriated to China.)  </p><p>Americans have addicted themselves to pandas. They're the main <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2019/11/18/bei-bei-showered-with-attention-national-zoo-prepares-send-him-china-tuesday/">draw for the National Zoo</a>, and also have attracted huge crowds in other cities where they've been loaned out, including San Diego and Atlanta. </p><p>But why are we duped by them? Pandas are gorgeous, but — as with too-beautiful humans — pandas exploit their beauty to cover up their deep character flaws. Pandas are lazy and ill-tempered. They barely move! (The hours I wasted as a DC schoolkid waiting for one of the pandas to do something, anything — just to lift a paw!)  Pandas don't seem to be interested in their own survival: It takes heroic, hideously expensive efforts to get them to breed. They're largely indifferent parents. (Don't get me started about the DC panda that<a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2015/08/150824-pandas-national-zoo-twins-animals-science/"> crushed its own newborn</a>.) </p><p>Americans are forking over enormous sums of money to China so they can gawp at dumb, brutish supermodel animals. We should be spending those millions on American-made products. How about bison? Or black-footed ferrets? Or manatees? Or pumas? Pumas are plenty gorgeous! </p><p>The Trump administration is frantic that TikTok and Huawei are infiltrating the US and hooking Americans on Chinese products. The GOP's platform is… Donald Trump

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Rob Kim/Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Sure, Donald Trump is known for his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-just-let-someone-feel-his-hair-in-the-middle-of-a-campaign-speech-2015-8">colorful run for president</a>, hosting NBC's "The Apprentice" from 2004-2015, frequently appearing as a talking head on news shows, or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-taking-down-vince-mcmahon-2015-8">playing himself on "WrestleMania."</a> </p><p>But what many have forgotten is that Trump once made cameos in a <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0874339/?ref_=nv_sr_1#actor">string of 90s TV shows and movies</a>, from "Sex and the City" to "Home Alone 2."</p><p>Since Trump's acting seemed to cool off after 2001's "Zoolander" appearance, let's take a walk down memory lane...</p><p><strong>1. <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099656/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_18">"Ghosts Can't Do It"</a> (1989)</strong></p><p>In this crime fantasy starring Bo Derek, Trump played himself in a boardroom scene in which he exchanges a few lines with the model-turned-actress.
