"Children are often denied an education because there are no government schools in this village. She believes it to be wiser to elect women for the Gram Panchayat, as they "might take the access to educational facilities more seriously compared to previous male representatives." The sarpanch and 20 panchayat members of this all-women panchayat were elected unopposed this year. The panchayat members elected by this village of 3,842 people are a heterogenous lot comprising graduates, those who are contesting elections for the first time, and also those who have only studied up to fifth grade. Interestingly, although the sarpanch's seat was reserved for a Backward Caste (OBC) candidate without specific gender priority, 22-year-old housewife Krishna Rawat was elected as the sarpanch. In the previous term, though the panchayat was led by a woman - Shakun Neemnarayan - the rest of the panchayat members were male. Local resident Misribai told 101Reporters: "Besides education, roads, and drainage, the garbage dump in <keyword id="310458" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="adampur" source="Orion">Adampur</keyword> is a big issue. Since a year and a half, when I moved to this village, I have been seeing children attend schools in neighbouring villages. Thus, I have prioritised the setting up of a government primary or middle school here." Explaining the seriousness of the landfill issue, she added: "There was a lot of opposition by villagers when the landfill was shifted here by the City Corporation. It now poses a major problem. The only solution regarding the landfill is to ensure that it is maintained with due diligence. We will start off by filing complaints. If these produce no results, we will resort to protests." Rawat believes that the leachate from the garbage landfill is affecting the water resources of neighbouring villages, and orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) are not being followed. Based on the prize money announcement to an unopposed all-women panchayat, newly elected Rashmi awaits to disburse the amount for the school construction plan. CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan had declared a 15 lakh cash incentive for a collectively agreed upon all-women panchayat. Furthermore, she points out: "There have been no roads built in our village since 2019. Neither are there enough drains; the few existing ones are in a state of disrepair. We have hence commenced work on building drains while preparing to handle the other jobs in due course." Pune, Jun 4 () A 35-year-old man, who was severely injured in an incident of wall collapse during cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' in Maharashtra's Pune district, died at a hospital here on Thursday, police said. This is the third cyclone-related death reported in the district. The cyclone impacted Pune as it moved towards the northern part of the state on Wednesday, battering parts of Khed, Maval Mulshi, Junnar and Ambegaon tehsils. Pune district had already recorded two cyclone-related deaths on Wednesday. Narayan Ananta Navale, whose mother Manjabai was killed after a wall of their home in Khed tehsil collpased on Wednesday, died at a private hospital in Pune on Thursday, an official said. "Three members of the family, including him, were injured in the incident at Wahagaon village," he said. Earlier, Prakash Mokar (52), a resident of Mokarwadi in Haveli tehsil, had died while trying to catch hold of the tin roof of his home during the storm on Wednesday. Meanwhile, two cattle were electrocuted in Mulshi tehsil and tin roofs of three schools and a gram panchayat office in Velhe tehsil were blown away by gusty winds. Sawant told reporters outside the Chief Minister's residence here that the moratorium put in place in March soon after the Covid-19 pandemic would be lifted on November 30. "The office memorandum was issued in March because of Covid-19, which had weakened the financial situation of the state. We have taken a review now and the financial situation has improved considerably. The memorandum will be lifted from November 30 and from December 1, new projects will be undertaken," Sawant told reporters. "There are around 10,000 vacancies in various departments right now. Most departments have vacant posts. Ads will be issued for recruitment to the new posts soon," Sawant said. The announcement comes ahead of the Zilla Panchayat and Municipal polls, which had been postponed on account of the pandemic. Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in Goa in early 2022.

COVID-19: More areas in KDMC sealed to contain outbreak

Balodabazar, May 28 () In a bid to ensure personal hygiene for women at COVID-19 quarantine centres, the district administration at Balodabazar in Chhattisgarh was distributing sanitary napkins, an official said on Thursday. The authorities kicked off the initiative at a quarantine centre in Karmada village in the district on Wednesday, said Ashutosh Pandey, chief executive officer (CEO) of Balodabazar Zilla Panchayat. At present, the district has 763 quarantine facilities, where migrant workers were put up following their arrival from other states amid the lockdown, he said. "At least 7,000 sanitary pads will be distributed to women at these centres," Pandey said. Balodabazar is the first district in the state to come up with this initiative, which is being carried out in coordination with Azim Premji Foundation, he said. Women migrant workers hailed the move and expressed their gratitude to the administration. "We are glad that the district administration realised the importance of availability of sanitary pads and has come forward to help women in this time of crisis," said Anita Kumbhkar, who is quarantined at Karmada after returning from Maharashtra. Pune, June 3 () Two people died and three others were injured in two cyclone-related incidents in Pune district on Wednesday, said officials. Cyclone Nisarga is currently centered over Pune after making landfall in coastal Raigad district of Maharashtra around 1 pm. Manjabai Anant Navale (65), resident of Vahagaon village in Khed tehsil, died as a wall of her house collapsed and tin sheets on the roof were blown away in the wind. "Three other members of Navale family also sustained injuries. They have been shifted to a hospital in Chakan," said a senior district official. Prakash Mokar (52), a resident of Mokarwadi in Haveli tehsil, also died after the roof of his house was blown away and he was injured while trying to catch the tin sheets, said an officer from the District Disaster Management Cell. Bengaluru, Jul 13 () After Bengaluru urban and rural, lockdown has been announced in Dharwad and Dakshina Kannada districts by the administrations there on Monday, aimed at controlling the spread of COVID-19. While Dharwad will be under lockdown for nine days from July 15, in Dakshina Kannada it will be for a week from Wednesday night. Administrations in the two districts have taken this decision after discussing with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa at the video conference chaired by him with Deputy Commissioners, Zilla Panchayat CEOs and Superintendent of Police of various districts. "It was the opinion of the people of Dharwad district that lockdown has to be enforced for a few days... it is also the opinion of the district administration too. In this regard, I have discussed with the Chief Minister during video conferencing and sought his permission.He said district administration can take the decision," Minister Jagadish Shettar, who is in-charge of Dharwad district, told reporters. It has been decided to enforce lockdown in Dharwad district from 10 am on July 15 to 8 pm on July 24, he said. Formal circular, order and guidelines will be issued by the district administration, he said, as he sought cooperation of the people and appealed them to stay at home, maintain social distancing and wear masks. Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary too, after the video conference, pointed out that the Chief Minister said respective district administrations can take the decision if there is need for lockdown. Following discussion with public representatives and others, it was decided that lockdown has to be enforced to control the spread of coronavirus, he said. "It has been decided to implement lockdown for one week from wednesday (July 15) night...people should cooperate." Commercial establishments will be open till Wednesday and people can buy necessary items, he said, adding that the Deputy Commissioner has been instructed to issue necessary guidelines. With a spike in COVID-19 cases, the state government on Saturday had announced complete lockdown in Bengaluru urban and rural from July 14 (Tuesday) 8 pm to 5 am on July 22. As of July 12 evening, cumulatively 38,843 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 684 deaths and 15,409 discharges.
