According to Jain, the order was prepaid, and he wasn’t home at the time of delivery, so he had his younger brother handle the transaction. After providing his brother with the necessary OTP, Jain was confident everything was okay. However, upon returning home 20 minutes later, he was dismayed to find the wrong coin in the delivery—an issue that only grew as he tried to resolve it. In a detailed post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Jain explained how he ordered 1 gm gold coin, but what he received was a 0.5 gm <keyword id="20650343" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Malabar-Gold" source="keywords">Malabar Gold</keyword> coin with a rose design instead. Jain added that he reached out to the delivery agent and "almost cried". "I ordered 1 gm gold coin from blinkit, along with the 1gm silver coin. It was all prepaid. I wasn't there at home to receive the order, so I gave the otp to my younger brother to get it received. After 20 mins I reached home and saw wrong item was delivered I. I got 0.5gm Malabar gold coin (rose design). What I ordered was 1 gm Mata lakshmi gold coin," he wrote. Jain’s struggle didn’t end with the delivery mix-up. By the time he tried to address the issue, the 20-minute return window for the product had expired. Attempts to get in touch with Blinkit’s customer support proved equally frustrating. Jain shared screenshots of his conversation with Blinkit’s customer service team, where the automated response informed him that the return window had closed and suggested only that he “provide feedback to help improve services.” He added, "I couldn't contact any support executive. I called the delivery executive and literally cried while talking to him. He has the photos of coin before the delivery but he said that he can't do anything even after knowing that he delivered the wrong item. I do have CCTV footages too of getting wrong item delivered. Also It was the first and last time of me ordering something so expensive from blinkit as their customer support is pathetic, have to chat with AI bots." In an attempt to back up his claim, Jain also reviewed CCTV footage from his home that showed the delivery of the incorrect item. DMart, for instance, has set up its app and pick-up centers for home delivery after handling its bulk delivery orders during the pandemic. Online grocery market has two segments -- quick commerce and scheduled e-grocery. Paan to curds - quick commerce delivers it all A February 2022 Survey by LocalCircles indicates that 71% of the households used q-commerce platforms to either order daily use items such as milk, bread, eggs, curd, fruits and vegetables, etc. They also ordered indulgence items such as soft drinks, ice creams, chocolates and paan. Though, only 29% of the surveyed households used q-commerce for ‘all their grocery’ purchases. For the bulk purchases however, the large format stores are still in the running as people are going to the stores. DMart is still aggressively opening stores in parts of the country to get back to pre-covid levels. “We believe it will look to accelerate store expansion and the benefit of recent expansion is yet to fully kick in – revenue intensity is lower than pre-Covid levels,” said analysts at ICICI Securities post its March quarter earnings. Redseer estimates the grocery market size in India was worth $620 billion in 2021, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8% over the next four years to reach over $850 billion by 2025. Quick commerce is all set for the long haul Quick commerce players are also vying for a bigger piece of the entire pie. The quick ordering might start with fresher foods like fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy and other ready-to-cook items; and also indulgence categories like chocolates, biscuits, snacking items, cold drinks, and tobacco. But it could extend to others too. “We also expect grocery staples, cooking essentials, medicines, baby and personal care, home care and pet care, amongst others, to pick up as consumers become more habituated to ordering through the platforms,” said the JM Financial report. While these were exceptions, daily essentials like milk, bread, butter, curd and onion were amongst the top most searched items in 2022, on the app which promises to deliver goods within ten minutes. The most popular items however remained comfort foods like ice-cream and chips. The platform got about 120 orders per minute for ice-cream, chips and soft drinks. And another a hundred orders per minute for juices, salads, and organic foods. A user from Mumbai placed as many as 1,988 orders last year in 2022 — which is the highest number of orders. “2022 has been a thrilling year for Zepto. Entrepreneur and startup investor Ashneer Grover too joined in the conversation — insisting that 10-minute quick commerce delivery has no economics. Quick commerce sector has players like Zepto, Reliance-backed Dunzo, Zomato’s Blinkit and Swiggy’s Instamart. While most of them provide 10-minute deliveries, others too offer lightning-fast deliveries of a wide range of groceries — catching the imagination of consumers. However, quick commerce has had its set of detractors, and recently Hari Menon, the chief executive officer (CEO) of BigBasket stirred up the controversy with his comments against quick commerce. While BigBasket has its quick commerce avatar called BigBasketNow, it delivers its groceries in 30 minutes. ‘Qcommerce was thrust on customers’ Grover’s negative opinion on the economics of quick commerce delivery has another backer. Last week at the Sharrp Summit, Menon said that consumers never wanted quick delivery, and that it was thrust on them. A sensible business case involves 15-30 minutes to make a delivery, he added. “Quick commerce has certain dynamics required for unit economics to work, which means you need a high density of orders, it will be cut off at some point. The Bigbasket model will scale, but quick commerce without density doesn't work,” <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/business/companies/consumers-never-wanted-10-minute-delivery-says-bigbaskets-co-founder-16394831.htm">Menon said</a>. Menon’s comments had irked Aadit Palicha, the co-founder of Zepto and a Stanford dropout, who started the business during the pandemic when he was 19 years old. He hit back at Menon at the very summit saying that legacy e-commerce companies who have not generated significant net profit have no authority to make remarks on quick commerce’s sustainability. Indians take to quick commerce According to Redseer, Indian consumers are taking to quick commerce, and the adoption is much better than in other countries. India has a quick commerce penetration of 13% versus 7% in China and 3% in EU, respectively. The current market size of quick commerce in India is $5.5 billion – and as of now caters to only 1% of the total domestic grocery market. Redseer also says that the total addressable market (TAM) of quick commerce is at $45 billion. “Emerging as one of the fastest growing e-commerce models, quick commerce is fundamentally changing consumer purchase behaviour and the grocery retail market on the whole by providing faster delivery options (in as little as ten minutes) as well as a more convenience-driven shopping experience,” said the Redseer report. Quick commerce players who have set up dark stores that aid quick deliveries, cater to the mid to upper middle-class consumers, and also offer an eclectic mix of products —- in order to stay ahead of the competition from local kiranas. As of now however, around 70% of all quick commerce purchases are top-up orders. Many platforms have informed that milk, eggs and more are the most searched and purchased items for fast deliveries. Stockup purchases like staples and packaged foods are either purchased offline or through online e-commerce. Apart from the time and the economics, the war of words around e-commerce is about average order value (AOV). Many players are trying to push for it by offering free delivery for larger sized orders. A few services like Instamart charge different delivery prices for faster delivery of services. Moreover, the funding winter which has been taking the wind off the sails for most startups has also had its effect on quick commerce players. Moreover, grocery delivery – fast or otherwise – itself is becoming a tougher business to be in. JioMart Express, which offers 90-minute deliveries, has recently shut this service. At the same time last year, fast delivery service Ola Dash folded up. This, however, can be a blessing in disguise, say analysts. “Competitive intensity has slowed down in quick commerce, which gives incumbents room to build scale moats; and the expectation that the life cycle value of the incremental transacting user in quick commerce could be significantly better than in food delivery at the current stage,” says a recent report by JM Financial. When the dust settles on the war of words around quick commerce, it will be incumbent on the existing players to prove their detractors wrong by delivering profitable businesses. And yes, most Indians also are as keen on marriage as ever, with matrimonial portals continuing to see higher month-on-month user metrics and app downloads. Three years after the pandemic struck, Indians are still addicted to their apps and are still looking for their dream job, if they are not planning their next vacation. From ordering food online to looking for jobs and homes online, Indian consumers are not putting the brakes on their online purchases just yet, even after the economy opened up completely post the lockdowns. App downloads continued in March as did higher monthly traffic across key consumer tech platforms. In the month of March, monthly and daily active users continued to surge across apps catering to consumer needs like online food ordering, travel, property rentals/purchases, groceries or even jobs. Leading technology services players may have slowed down on hiring, but employees are still flocking to job portals. According to a report by Bank of America, Naukri maintained its totem pole position in MAUs (monthly active users) with 12.1 million (+7.2% month on month) users and witnessed increase in daily active user base at 2.1 million (+6% MoM) in <keyword id="10294782" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="march-2023" source="Orion">March 2023</keyword>. LinkedIn has the highest DAUs or daily active users at 3.7 million and is a clear leader in terms of user retention at 33% followed by Naukri at 18%, says the report. Data shows that consumer apps have continued to see good traction in the month of March 2023 compared to February. What consumers have been interestingly visiting less frequently —- are the beauty apps like Nykaa and Purplle — whose traffic is down month-on-month. Beauty brands believe that omnichannel and physical store visits are the reason for the decline in online purchases. Food delivery &amp; grocery continue to see demand According to Bank of America’s India Internet report, a majority of online food delivery apps saw an increase in fresh app downloads and user metrics, while Swiggy saw a marginal decline in fresh downloads. Online food delivery apps launched special match day games to increase engagement, which resulted in higher ordering too. While Zomato launched ZPL prediction, Swiggy launched Match Day Mania. Not surprising that monthly active users of Zomato and Swiggy grew 4.9%/4.6% MoM to 53 million/35 million. Daily active users for both Zomato and Swiggy increased 2-3% MoM to 6.1 million/4.4 million, respectively. Domino’s Pizza continued to be third in all metrics. Swiggy showed a higher retention at 13% vs Zomato at 11%. Real estate continues to be hot property online Housing continued to see the highest online traffic, as searches for rented and ownership continued to jump. Both monthly active users and app downloads were healthy for online players. Monthly active users increased sequentially for all the apps catering to housing, while daily active users grew for 99acres and Housing. Traffic on Magicbricks remained stable. Monthly active users on 99acres MAUs witnessed steep growth +14.3% compared to February. In terms of user retention, Housing continues to lead at 11%, followed by 99acres and Magicbricks at 9%. Revenge travel is still a big deal With the onset of summer, consumers are planning their next trip, which has resulted in strong traction for online travel apps like Cleartrip and Makemytrip. User metrics improved for Cleartrip, GoIbibo and MakeMyTrip; while Yatra and EaseMyTrip witnessed a decline, says Bank of America. MakeMyTrip monthly and daily users inched upwards (+9%/4% MoM) ahead of the upcoming summer holiday season in May/June 2023. Cleartrip MAUs/DAUs both grew 44.8% MoM to 1.3 million /0.1 million, respectively, majorly driven by launch of bus services in over 90 cities and various offers like zero convenience fees and flat 10% off on all bus bookings. MakeMyTrip continues to be the leader in MAUs, DAUs and retention; with 15.8 million MAUs/1.5 million DAUs while Goibibo has 8.5 million MAUs/ 0.7 million DAUs. High five for fashion apps As social distancing has given way to more contact intensive interactions, demand for fashion apparel has also increased meaningfully. Consumers continue to look for bargains online and Ajio’s All Star sale has delivered the numbers. According to data, Ajio’s monthly active users showed a sharp increase sequentially as downloads of the app increased. Ajio’s MAU/DAU base rocketed 22%/26% sequentially. Myntra/Nykaa Fashion’s MAU base improved 3% MoM each while DAU base saw a slight 1-2% decline. In terms of user retention, Myntra is at 17% followed by Ajio at 16%, says the report. Marriages are forever Young Indians continue to look for their perfect partner. User metrics and downloads witnessed an increase across all apps. Shaadi.com continued to be a leader with monthly and daily active users at 9 million/2.9 million, respectively in March 2023. Jeevansathi’s monthly numbers grew 13% month-on-month, while daily users increased by 8% compared to February. BharatMatrimony user metrics remained largely stable. Jeevansathi has the highest user retention at 34% followed by BharatMatrimony at 33%. Thus, Indian companies are desperately on the lookout for gig workers to fulfill roles in business development, field sales, last-mile delivery, digital promotion, brand promotion, and micro-influencers, according to <keyword id="14204112" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="taskmo-gig" source="Orion">Taskmo Gig</keyword> Index report. In fact, a 50% growth in active gig workers on the platform in the past five months was seen. The number of active gig workers registered on the platform in May was 60,000, a 15.38% growth in the workforce joining the <keyword id="3080230" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gig-economy" source="Orion">gig economy</keyword> compared to the previous month, as per the data given in the report. A similar trend was also observed in the gig job opportunities as recruiters are strengthening their roots across tier-2 and 3 cities such as Pondicherry, Mirzapur, Patna, Jabalpur, and Kanpur, increasing the number of gig jobs overall. “Gig is the newest trend in the employment market and today we see its expansion across each and every industry in the country. Gig workers aged between 26 to 40 years hold 32% share in the gig economy, while gig workers in the age group of 41-60 years make up only 20% of the overall workforce. “Now we see every other company promoting gigification of traditional job roles. Furthermore, we have seen that emerging segments in gig are largely dominated by millennials and Gen Z today,” Janadri added. Women gig workers however make up only 28% of the gig workforce. “Gig continues to be a flexible model of work for India’s working women who are able to pick their jobs based on their area of interest, location, availability and experience. Women have been majorly employed in roles related to customer support, content monitoring and moderation, tele-sales, and audits and surveys,” says the report. Furthermore, the gig segment has seen a significant demand for workers across various sectors like quick commerce, healthtech, fintech and e-commerce. Cities like Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai saw the maximum growth, according to the report. Gig economy is dominated by millennials but women make up for less than a third of the workforce

<ul><li><keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> has accused that it is taking necessary steps to ensure the safety of their partners and not put them under pressure.</li><li>IFAT is an association of 35,000 service professionals working with Zomato, Swiggy, Uber, Ola and others.</li><li>The company will start its 10-minute delivery operation in Gurugram from next month.</li></ul>Even as Zomato is celebrating its entry into the 10-minute food delivery space, the delivery partners — who are going to be executing it on the ground — do not seem too excited about it. The Indian Federation of App-based Transport Workers (IFAT) and Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) have called out the company for not fixing current issues in their system. The association has urged the company to treat their delivery partners as human beings. Shaik Salauddin, the national general secretary of IFAT and the founder state head of TGPWU, noted, “Zomato in most of the cases has not been able to resolve issues like leaked meals, which arises from faulty packaging and executing fast delivery. As a result delivery partners/workers have been penalised quite a few times. While planning to provide 10-min [sic] deliveries to its customers Zomato needs to resolve these issues and concerns of the workers.” “Further we urge Zomato to look [at] their delivery workers as human beings [as they] are more than data points for the algorithm to manage,” he added. Notably, IFAT is an association of 35,000 service professionals working with Zomato, Swiggy, Uber, Ola and others. He further noted that the company should take care of the issues and the concerns raised by the delivery partners before it assures the customers of “lightning fast” delivery. The company also needs to provide resting areas, access to bathrooms, charging stations and wifi access to its delivery partners before starting “finishing stations” for quick delivery in Gurugram, the association added. This is not the first time that someone has raised issues with the 10-minute delivery model. Previously, a netizen raised a petition to<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/swiggy-dunzo-zepto-and-grofers-should-roll-back-10-minute-delivery-says-petition/articleshow/89900739.cms"> urge companies like Swiggy, Blinkit (Grofers), Zepto and Dunzo</a> to do away with their 10-minute delivery services. The petition noted that the 10-minute delivery services adds extra pressure on delivery partners, who have to resort to overspeeding and traffic rule violations to fulfill these orders on time as well as avoid being penalised by the platforms. IFAT had also agreed to the content of the petition. Zomato has mentioned that it will not be showing the delivery time to delivery partners or penalising them for late delivery. The company has taken this step to ensure the safety of their partners and not put them under pressure. The company will roll its 10-minute delivery service in Gurugram next month and later look to expand to other cities.
