According to Zendesk CEO <keyword id="17387230" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tom-eggemeier" source="Orion">Tom Eggemeier</keyword>, from 2020-2022, the hiring outpaced business realities. "At the same time, our customers are navigating massive shifts in how they do business, including increased pressure to deliver profitable growth and leveraging fast-advancing technology like generative AI," he told employees in an email. To best serve customers, "we have to sharpen our focus and wherever possible, direct our talent and resources to our highest priorities including maturing how we go to market and building new products and capabilities that deliver tremendous value," he added. Each impacted employee will be eligible for three months of base salary/on-target earnings plus one week for each full year of service, job search resources, a prorated portion of annual bonus payable at target, 60 days of vesting cash and health insurance benefit coverage. "In some countries, this process, including notifications about potential role impact, will take longer due to local requirements and practices," informed the CEO. "For those not impacted, we know this is a difficult time for you too, as we all say goodbye to teammates. According to the report, 71% of the customers who use chatbots regularly have said their interactions have become more human-like. However, this has only increased their expectations. The report says 84% of customers expect more improvements, while 46% want their interactions to become more conversational rather than command-like. The number of companies mentioning labour shortage in their quarterly earnings filings globally increased by 28 per cent in 2022 compared to 2021, a new report showed on Monday. This shows a continuous uptrend witnessed in recent years, while sentiment fell by 20 per cent, revealing <keyword id="1670029" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="globaldata" source="Orion">GlobalData</keyword>, a leading data analytics company. Semiconductor and supply were other top keywords discussed around the topic. The industries with the highest labour shortage discussions include construction, technology, packaging and consumer while financial services had the highest growth in the terms mentioned. "The shortage has resulted in increased dependence on more expensive temporary labour resources, significant increases in costs as well as delays in construction," said analyst <keyword id="1192801" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ekta-chourasia" source="Orion">Ekta Chourasia</keyword>. <keyword id="1132603" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="zendesk" source="Orion">Zendesk</keyword>, a US-based technology company, mentioned that the labour shortage contributed to an increase in wages and salaries, unfavourably impacting its expenses and operating costs. <keyword id="15572581" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="surge-components" source="Orion">Surge Components</keyword>, a provider of capacitors and semiconductors, discussed that labour shortage posed challenges to its customers' engineering staff, causing delays in product approval. Zendesk, which has also partnered with WhatsApp for business, also launched two new products globally, including India. First product being Gather, which is a platform where customers can engage with each other and company experts. The second one Sunshine Conversations, an API-based platform through which companies can interact with consumers through social media channels. Some of its clients include Uber, Lyft, Airbnb, and also DBS Bank. India’s new-age tech savvy companies and the thousands of small and medium enterprises also caught Zendesk’s fancy. But the US-listed company will find competition from the homegrown Zoho and Freshworks, both of which have also expanded to the US. Big plans for India The India market was initially clubbed with the overall APAC zone, until Zendesk saw an opportunity in India’s growing small businesses and established an India office in 2016. Having been around in India for three years now, Zendesk has over 2800 clients including the likes of Ola, Zomato, Shaadi.com, OLX, Vodafone, Airbnb and ITC Foods.. “We follow a methodology in the emerging markets. In the beginning, an entire market is is grouped together and then we make small bets. So we have been investing in building a brand and momentum in India. We are very happy with India contribution so far but we have great expectations,” Tom Keiser, chief operating officer, Zendesk told Business Insider at the recently concluded Zendesk Showcase in Singapore. When they started off, they had 1700 customers with just 5 people at work. Today, they have over 30 employees. Ola was one of their early clients. Today, they also have startups like Bounce, Drivezy subscribing to them. And somewhere Reliance Jio which led the unprecedented data growth in India also helped, informs KT Prasad, India head, Zendesk. Challenges and localization in India But of course, India comes with its challenges. “There is an extreme scale in India and almost every client you speak to, their aspiration is always to serve over a billion people. The challenge is always making sure that you give a cost effective solution for the whole market. But India is still so underserved, the middle class population is growing at such a fast rate and something that wasn’t a business a few years ago is a booming one today,” said Sandie Overtveld, VP Asia Pacific, Zendesk. So, they had to turn to localization. Zendesk also offers customer service in Hindi and is looking to offer in other dialects in the future. Social media is also driving change in India. “With the growth of social media, and the ease with which one can turn to one of the platforms and complaint about a product, makes customer service even more important,” said Overtveld. Competing with Zoho, Freshdesk Two Indian startups – Zoho and Freshdesk took over the <keyword id="200550" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CRM">CRM</keyword> space and entered the US market. But in a fast evolving Indian market, local players have an advantage – they know the Indian consumer well. However, Zendesk believes that it has a clear value proposition that differentiates it. “It’s a very competitive space and while the competitors have broadened their services – we are completely focussed on the customer and customer service,” said Keiser. Zendesk is also innovating fast to stay in the game. “We are bringing the right value to the consumer. Four years ago, we had 2-3 products, today, we have over 8 products,” said Prasad. It is also deep into machine learning, big data with a team that is based out of Melbourne, Australia. “We are building a more robust set of capabilities for self service. Solutions can be served with commitment and an omni channel approach where everything comes together - voice, text, e-mail etc,” said Keiser.

US-listed Zendesk is betting big on India in spite of competition from homegrown Zoho, Freshworks

For the last five years, a team of 150 engineers have been working day in and out in a tiny<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+village&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> Indian village</a> in <keyword id="239945" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tenkasi">Tenkasi</keyword>, about 650 kms south of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=chennai&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Chennai</a>, building a world-class context-aware helpdesk software called <keyword id="3860891" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zoho-Desk">Zoho Desk</keyword>. 
 This may sound like it's straight out of the plot of a movie, but <keyword id="191862" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sridhar-Vembu">Sridhar Vembu</keyword>, CEO of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=zoho&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Zoho Corp</a> has ensured it became a reality with his able guidance and vision. As a result, <keyword id="265415" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="ZOHO">Zoho</keyword>, a multi-billion dollar customer management (CRM) company with offices in <keyword id="12864" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chennai">Chennai</keyword> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=silicon+valley&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Silicon Valley,</a> has achieved something no company can boast of- harnessing and training the talent in rural India to build a software product for a global market.

 Zoho Desk, which is the sixth product that the company has launched in 2016, uses customer data from past interactions and from other Zoho products, like Zoho CRM and <keyword id="3870877" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="zoho-projects">Zoho Projects</keyword>, to organise tickets and intelligently present information to agents so that they can better understand a customer's problem and resolve it efficiently. 
 
It thus helps companies deliver the right solution at the right time. Its clean user interface packs innovations like Work Modes that help agents send context-aware responses, the Headquarters dashboard that provides the visibility managers need to make better decisions, and the Team Feed to help the entire company participate in customer service. 
 
As is the case with every Zoho product, Zoho Desk is also available for free up to 10 users. Paid plans begin at Rs 720 per user per month for the Professional Edition and increase to Rs 1,500 per user per month for the Enterprise version. 
 
The company's 15 acre Tenkasi facility from where Zoho Desk was built started out with three engineers who had moved from Chennai five years ago, which has today blossomed into a modest-size office housing 150 employees. Vembu himself makes it a point to visit this office once every three months. "Investment in building the entire centre at Tenkasi stood at Rs 3,000 per sq feet, excluding land costs," he revealed. To accommodate more employees, the company is also expanding its facility, which is going to be three times bigger than the existing office. 
 
 
 
From the very beginning of this plan, Vembu was clear about one thing- he had to first build a durable product, regardless of how long it took him. Infact, it was this very decision that stopped him from making Zoho Desk public despite it being ready for a year. Instead, the company used those 12 months to test out the product themselves and launch it in the market once they were absolutely sure of it. 
 
That seemed to paid off wonderfully for Vembu, as Zoho Desk currently boasts of handling 50 million tickets for 20 million users. Vembu is of the hope that out of 150,000 organizations across the world that Zoho counts as its customers, atleast one-third of them will become Zoho Desk users, making it a force to reckon with while it takes on two large rivals- global major <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=zendesk&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Zendesk </a>and local product <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=freshdesk&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Freshdesk</a>. 
 
Naturally, the road till here was fraught with challenges as Vembu attempted to build everything from ground up, but that hardly deterred the man who is known for building a one of the most profitable global tech company without any external funding. 
 
"We would have definitely built it faster if we had chosen a city like Chennai, but from the onset we were clear that we wanted to build a world-class product from rural India using the talent that most often than not remains untapped," he explained. 
 
Combine that with Vembu's belief that rural talent shouldn't have to leave home to find opportunity and you get an insight into the mind of the man who has proved that ‘a determined and sincere group of people can build path-breaking products anywhere.’ 
 
Sticking to their guns, the company developed local talents through its own university, Zoho University, recruited engineers through campus placements, then trained and mentored them. 
 At a time when almost all companies are moving from the suburbs to the cities to make a name for themselves, Zoho is busy reversing that trend to prove that you don't really need to be in <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword> to build a world-class product.

 Freshworks commenced operations in 2010 as a customer support company - Freshdesk - before rebranding itself and branching out into software services. It currently offers businesses a variety of services, ranging from IT systems, sales management software and customer service. It competes with the likes of Zendesk and Salesforce and has over 150,000 clients across the world including Cisco, Toshiba, Honda, Bridgestone and the University of Pennsylvania. The company has raised $250 million to date. Its last major capital infusion came in 2016, wherein Sequoia led a $55 million funding round to give it a valuation of $700 million. It recently reached around $100 million in annual recurring revenues. Freshworks will use the latest investment to expand its platform, add clients in new markets in the Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa and integrate artificial intelligence into its core service offering. GIven the company’s plans of an initial public offering in the near future, this is likely the last time it will take the private funding route before going public. To this effect, Freshworks also announced the appointment of Suresh Seshadri, the former VP of finance at AppDynamics, as its new chief financial officer. Seshadri was instrumental in taking AppDynamics, a San Francisco-based IT analytics company, public last year.

Most of the organizations will invest in bots more, post coronavirus crisis,” Sunil C, specialized staffing head at TeamLease Digital told Business Insider. Seems like the companies are already expanding their digital footprint. Many remote working and learning companies are using ‘Answer Bot’ service and are able to resolve nearly nine times as many customer queries, said Zendesk. This has been happening since March, according to online web support and live chats. “Companies experiencing the biggest changes include remote work and learning, telecommunications, and food delivery companies, who have been ramping up with AI to take some of the pressure off agents and allow customers to find what they need, as soon as they need it,” Zendesk report said. Virtual assistants — an intellectual solution With the outbreak of Coronavirus, most companies were caught off guard as they were not prepared for the sudden rise in the number of support requests — and had limited staff to spare. “So, now companies are thinking how we can fine tune business processes so we can handle rise in customer interactions,” said Kartik Poddar, business head at Haptik in an interview. In fact, as most people work from home, organisations are worried about the mission critical operations and processes to safeguard against future contagions such as Coronavirus and also other forms of disruptions such as cyber-attacks and or biological attacks, said Vishwesh Padmanabhan, digital consulting head at KPMG in India. Going further, the demand will only accelerate as most companies will look to enable its workforce to become ‘work from home’ ready. This will require companies to adopt digital at a faster pace to meet margins and revenue targets, after the situation rebounds. That is where efficiency will play a major role. In that scenario, companies will adopt multiple technologies including <keyword id="3241386" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="robotic-process-automation">robotic process automation</keyword> and more leading to a surge in demand for virtual assistants as well. “In the short term, any solution which helps in cost cutting will be in demand. That way, virtual assistants will be an intellectual solution. However, in the long term, it will be about removing inefficiencies,” Poddar added. AI will ‘keep the lights on’ when humans can’t Poddar believes that from a job market perspective, this will lead to a rise in demand for Robotic Process Automation (RPA) experts. “There will be huge adoption of RPA, probably more than virtual assistants,” he said. Travel and hospitality, retail, e-commerce and BFSI are more likely to adopt bots and virtual assistants. A recent report by <a href="https://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=US44524218&amp;pageType=PRINTFRIENDLY">IDC</a> says that the RPA market will grow up to 49.3% in India. “Expected CAGR of around 33% by 2025 may come down post Corona, but I do expect these numbers to climb back up given the needs mentioned above, perhaps by 2027 &amp; beyond,” Padmanabhan said. According to Teamlease, India can be a global power house for RPA, thanks to its huge BPO base. “I expect to see an increasing demand for RPA and in particular AI based systems that will make informed decisions to ‘keep the lights on’ when humans may not be able to run operations due to any unforeseen event,” added Padmanabhan. Sunil believes that RPA transition will take time but happen eventually. “RPA will be used extensively to support non-value and labour intensive activities. RPA and other intelligent automation will ensure business continuity in situations like a pandemic and will also play an important role in enhancing the productivity of the workforce,” he said.
