<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12317729" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="zelda-williams" source="Orion">Zelda Williams</keyword> told fans on Twitter to stop sending her a viral video of an actor playing her dad.</li><li>Actor Jamie Costa published a video earlier this week of him impersonating <keyword id="11984063" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="robin-williams" source="Orion">Robin Williams</keyword>.</li></ul><p>Zelda Williams asked fans on Twitter to stop sending her videos of an impersonator of her father, Robin Williams.</p><p>Earlier this week, actor <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-kOy4s_Z0M">Jamie Costa published a five-minute video entitled "ROBIN Test Footage Scene"</a> where he plays the late comedian receiving news of the death of his friend, John Belushi. The scene replicates Williams on March 5, 1982, when his "Mork &amp; Mindy" co-star, Pam Dawber (portrayed in the video by Sarah Murphree) tells him the news of Belushi overdosing. Belushi's overdose occurred hours after he was hanging out with Williams.</p><p>Costa's clip has since gone viral, receiving almost 5 million views on <keyword id="11894124" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="youtube" source="Orion">YouTube</keyword> at the time of writing. On Tuesday, when the video was first published, Zelda Williams had to plead with fans to stop sending the video to her.</p><p>"Guys, I'm only saying this because I don't think it'll stop until I acknowledge it," she wrote. "Please, stop sending me the 'test footage'. I've seen it. Jamie is SUPER talented, this isn't against him, but y'all spamming me an impression of my late Dad on one of his saddest days is weird."</p><p>One fan responded with: "Maybe it's not meant to be cruel or rude. Or promote sadness. A lot of us regular people loved your Dad, for many, many, reasons. If that clip stops one person from doing drugs, I say it's a win/win. Love and light to you."</p><p>To this, the "Dead of Summer" star replied: "I said nothing about cruel or rude. The clip made me uncomfy so I was asking kindly for folks to stop sending it to me over and over."</p><p>"Your love for Dad doesn't mean I have to tolerate being bombarded in silence, and being projected upon can be pretty exhausting some days," she added.</p><p>Costa's video now has fans <a href="https://eu.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/movies/2021/10/13/robin-williams-jamie-costa-youtube-impersonation-sparks-biopic-calls/8444699002/">calling for a full biopic</a> about the beloved comedian. Robin Williams committed suicide in 2014 <a href="https://www.insider.com/robin-williams-wife-explains-how-dementia-gripped-the-actor-before-his-death-2016-10">after suffering from Lewy body dementia.</a></p><p>Zelda Williams, who is also an actor, is one of Williams' three children and has paid tribute to her dad on numerous occasions, including <a href="https://www.insider.com/robin-williams-daughter-found-sweet-photos-amid-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-3">sharing</a> touching photos of him on social media that she had unearthed last year. Her brother, Zak Williams, also bonded with Prince Harry earlier this year <a href="https://www.insider.com/prince-harry-robin-williams-son-public-grief-2021-5">over their "shared experience" with public grief.</a></p>

Zelda Williams tells fans to stop sending her viral 'test footage' of actor impersonating her father

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Zelda Williams, daughter of Robin Williams, was forced to quit Twitter after heartless trolls spammed her with gruesome Photoshopped images of her father, who was found dead in his California home on Monday, August 11. </p>
<p>She originally had asked her followers, most of whom were tweeting messages of love and support, to report the trolls. Soon after, she took back her request.</p>
<p>US Weekly reports <a href="http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/zelda-williams-quits-twitter-instagram-after-robin-williams-death-2014138">Zelda, 25, tweeted</a>: <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"I'm sorry. I should've risen above. Deleting this from my devices for a good long time, maybe forever. Time will tell. Goodbye."</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Zelda, who is the second of the late actor's three children, was the first to take to social media following the public announcement of her dad's death. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">On Instagram, she posted the following quote from "The Little Prince" late Monday night:</span></p>

That was more than enough, and I'm grateful for what little time I had. My favorite photos of family are framed in my house, not posted on social media, and they 'll remain there. Zelda Williams Quits Twitter After Trolls Harass Her With Photoshopped Images Of Her Dead Father

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Actress and director Zelda Williams said the use of AI recreations of her father's voice was "personally disturbing."</li><li>These AI recreations are at best "a poor facsimile of greater people," she said.</li></ul><p>Zelda Williams slammed AI recreations of her father's likeness, saying she finds these recreations "personally disturbing."</p><p>In an Instagram story on Sunday, Williams wrote: "I've already heard AI used to get his 'voice' to say whatever people want and while I find it personally disturbing, the ramifications go far beyond my own feelings."</p><div type="image" title="Screenshot of Zelda Williams' Instagram story" height="1394" width="780" msid="104100207" hostid="261" sizebytes="60354"></div><p>Zelda further wrote that she had seen attempts at using AI to replace or recreate actors who cannot consent to its use — like her father.</p><p>"These recreations are, at their very best, a poor facsimile of greater people, but at their worst, a horrendous Frankensteinian monster, cobbled together from the worst bits of everything this industry is, instead of what it should stand for," she further wrote.</p><p>Robin Williams <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/actor-robin-williams-found-dead-in-his-home-2014-8">died</a> by suicide in 2014, aged 63. The actor was known for his roles in "Aladdin," the "Dead Poets Society," and "Good Will Hunting."</p><p>For context, Zelda Williams has long held her stance against AI replacing actors. In 2019, Zelda <a href="https://ew.com/movies/2019/11/07/celebrities-criticize-james-dean-new-movie/">criticized a director's plans</a> to digitally recreate late actor James Dean for the film, "Finding Jack."</p><p>And Williams isn't alone in her criticism of AI. Actor Tom Hanks shared an Instagram post on Sunday <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cx2MsH9rt7q/?hl=en">warning his fans</a> about an AI deepfake of his likeness being used to promote dental plans, saying he has  "nothing to do with it." </p><p>In June, voice actor Brad Ziffer said he was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-generated-human-voice-clones-narrating-audiobooks-2023-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">avoiding gigs</a> that would enable companies to create an AI-generated voice clone, for fear that it would threaten his future livelihood.</p><p>Williams' comments now come amid a growing debate over the use of AI in the media industry. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hollywood-writers-strike-over-technology-ai-netflix-streaming-studios-2023-7">Protections against AI</a> were a key demand of the Screen Actors Guild strike. Williams has also been <a href="https://twitter.com/zeldawilliams/status/1679611888735522816">critical</a> of studios proposing that background actors get scanned for digital likenesses that studios can <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/actors-strike-union-ai-body-likeness-scan-background-extras-2023-7">own forever</a>.</p><p>Representatives for Zelda Williams did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider, sent outside regular business hours.</p>

Robin Williams' daughter says she finds AI recreations of her father's voice 'personally disturbing'

<p>Dan Stevens is having a banner year.</p><p>It's only August, and audiences have already seen him as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.vulture.com/article/godzilla-x-kong-dan-stevens-on-being-king-kongs-dentist.html">King Kong's dentist</a>, a corrupt former police officer turned vampire-child kidnapper from Queens, and most recently, a flute-playing German resort owner with a sinister agenda.</p><p>That range of roles (in "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," "Abigail," and "Cuckoo," respectively) is nothing out of the ordinary for Stevens. He delights in doing a little bit of everything, from playing Charles Dickens to a mentally ill mutant to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/beauty-and-the-beast-cast-compared-original-animated-movie-2017-3">a literal Disney prince</a>.</p><p>"I think career is defined as much by what you say no to as what you say yes to," Stevens tells Business Insider.</p><p>Stevens knows how to say "no," even when it hurts. He famously devastated <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cast-of-downton-abbey-first-episodes-new-era-movie-2022-5">"Downton Abbey"</a> fans by requesting to leave the beloved period drama, which necessitated <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-shocking-character-deaths-on-tv-2018-7">killing off his fan-favorite character Matthew Crawley</a>. But he was eager to try something new after mostly appearing in costume dramas; he credits moving to the US from his native UK with cracking his career wide open.</p><p>"There was a real openness to see actors try things that they've not necessarily been seen in before over here, and that was very, very appealing to me," Stevens says.</p><p>Ultimately, he realized the US could provide "a more interesting path for me."</p><p>That path most recently led Stevens to "Cuckoo," a trippy horror film in which he plays the villainous Herr König, the aforementioned weirdo flutist who terrorizes '"Euphoria" actor <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zendaya-hunter-schafer-relationship-timeline-euphoria-costars-friendship-2022-1">Hunter Schafer</a>. Stevens gives a delightfully unhinged performance, where you can tell he's having loads of fun — and that he's come a long way from his Cousin Matthew days.</p><p>Over the last decade, Stevens has been leaning into discomfort when it comes to choosing roles, preferring to stretch himself than to play it safe.</p><p>"Taking those kinds of risks does involve an element of terror and discomfort, and part of the journey is sort of finding out what that's going to mean and how that's going to progress," Stevens says of how he felt leaving "Downton Abbey." "I didn't know the answer to any of those questions when I left, and it's been fun answering them bit by bit over the years."</p><p>For the latest interview in Business Insider's <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/role-play-series"><u>"Role Play" series</u></a>, Stevens looks back on his "Downton" departure, wearing stilts to play the Beast in "Beauty and the Beast," and fulfilling a lifelong ambition by working with Al Pacino.</p><h2>On the excitement and terror of leaving 'Downton Abbey'</h2><div type="image" title="Dan Stevens as Matthew Crawley and Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary on &quot;Downton Abbey&quot;" height="840" width="1120" msid="112476730" hostid="261" sizebytes="50526"></div><p><strong>It's been more than a decade since you departed "Downton Abbey." With all that time, is there anything you look back on and view differently about the show or your experience on it?</strong></p><p>Not especially. I think what's lovely is how the fan love for that show has endured and people are still discovering it. I still get messages every other week where somebody hits the end of season three and can't believe what's just happened, but there's just such an enduring love for that show and I have very, very fond memories of it.</p><p><strong>Do you still keep in contact with anyone from the cast? I know several of them have reunited for the third "Downton" movie coming soon.</strong></p><p>Yeah, yeah. I keep in touch with a few of them and every so often, one or two of them will pop over to LA and I'll see them as they come through town.</p><p><strong>Was taking that leap of faith to leave "Downton" at the peak of the show scary for you? </strong></p><p>It's absolutely terrifying, but that's kind of what's exciting about it as well.</p><p><strong>In terms of career regrets, is there anything you regret turning down in retrospect?</strong></p><p>I think I can stand by all the choices I've made. I try not to regret too many things in my career. I think whether something is ultimately successful or not, if you've got a good reason why you sort of jumped onboard in the first place — it could be you just wanted to try something or there's a particular person you want to work with, or there's a filmmaker or an actor — there should be a reason that you can say that you are there.</p><p>And what happens to that project ultimately is so out of your hands very often. When things succeed or don't succeed, you sort of roll with those punches, really. And as I say, I try and find a good reason for doing most everything, and enjoying what I do along the way.</p><h2>On the commotion over his MoCap suit for 'Beauty and the Beast'</h2><p><strong>Clips of you </strong><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emma-watson-dan-stevens-beauty-and-the-beast-without-cgi-2017-5"><strong>wearing that motion capture suit on the set of "Beauty and the Beast"</strong></a><strong> went viral when that movie came out in 2017. How did you feel about seeing those photos out there and the reaction?</strong></p><p>I think what surprised me was that all the headlines were like, "How did Emma Watson keep a straight face opposite this?" rather than, "How the hell did Dan Stevens walk on those stilts?"</p><p>I guess it's a less attractive headline, but for me, that was the story from those images, not the other way around.</p><p><strong>I mean, in retrospect, Emma had also just come off of "Harry Potter" and had been around much weirder things on set, I would imagine.</strong></p><p>Yeah, definitely. No, she was quite unfazed by all of the technical wizardry, which a lot of people might not have been.</p><p><strong>Was wearing that MoCap suit as awkward as it looked?</strong></p><p>I love that kind of thing. I love technical innovation combined with a creative storytelling, I think it's tremendously exciting and something that I'd be up for doing again.</p><p>I think it's a really, really fun way to create a character and to kind feed off the energy of that whole team behind doing it the way that they did it. Every day felt like we were sort of pioneering something. It was cool.</p><h2>On bringing Legion back to the Marvel universe</h2><div type="image" title="Dan Stevens in organge jumpsuit sitting on a green chair in &quot;Legion.&quot;" height="800" width="1067" msid="112476727" hostid="261" sizebytes="32626"></div><p><strong>There's a pretty big overhaul of the MCU happening right now, with movies like "Deadpool and Wolverine," where it seems like the door could be open for your Marvel character Legion to appear in films in the future. At this point, would you ever consider stepping back into that role?</strong></p><p>I think "Deadpool, Wolverine, and Legion" would be a great next step. What was something you learned from working with him on set?</strong></p><p>It was incredible to get to work with him. I mean, that's a real lifelong ambition fulfilled, and he was such an incredibly sweet man and still such a lively actor. And his attitude and the energy and the sort of subtle nuances he brings, it is incredible to watch at work, and I will treasure that for a very, very long time.</p><p><strong>You've worked with so many incredible directors already on both film and TV. Is there anyone that you haven't worked with yet that you're hoping to?</strong></p><p>I'm a big fan of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-northman-robert-eggers-behind-the-scenes-stories-director-2022-4">Robert Eggers</a>. I think he's terrific. "The Witch" is one of my favorite films of recent years.</p><p>And I really enjoyed "Lisa Frankenstein." I think Zelda Williams is a very exciting new voice and has a great sort of stylistic sensibility.</p><p><strong>We've talked about a few of your most memorable roles, but you've also been a Russian pop star, Charles Dickens, and King Kong's dentist, among other things. Is there a particular role of yours that you feel is underrated or that you wish had gotten more love from fans?</strong></p><p>The thing I sort of enjoy about the way that modern media is being consumed is that people discover things at the oddest times and the unlikely ones can really kind of endure and pop up. And so it's always interesting what people choose to kind of come up and say, "Hey, I loved you in X, Y, and Z," and it's always a treat when they say something that's perhaps not one of the usual two or three.</p><p>And one that I particularly enjoy is when people say how much they enjoyed "High Maintenance," which was a show that I really really loved being a part of. I thought it was such an incredible family of creatives on that job and such a lovely character to get to play and just had such a lovely time making it. And that particular role has really meant something to a lot of people. It spoke to people in a particular way. Under the agreement, the fees, known as interchange, would be lowered and capped for a few years.</p><p>Another part of the settlement allows merchants to charge consumers more for using specific credit cards. <p>Robin Williams was found dead of apparent suicide. While messages of love and support poured out across the world, almost immediately, Zelda's Twitter account was also being spammed with anonymous accounts posting gruesome images, forcing the 25-year-old to <a href="https://twitter.com/zeldawilliams">post a statement to her account</a> saying she'd be leaving Twitter and other forms of social media to grieve privately. </p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Now, Twitter says its changing its policy about harassment. <a href="http://www.dailydot.com/technology/twitter-zelda-williams-harassment/">In a statement to The Wrap, a spokesperson said:</a></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;" dir="ltr"><span id="docs-internal-guid-86d4b010-d500-9830-2768-d93a916ff6f8">We will not tolerate abuse of this nature on Twitter. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We have suspended a number of accounts related to this issue for violating our rules and we are in the process of evaluating how we can further improve our policies to better handle tragic situations like this one. This includes expanding our policies regarding self-harm and private information, and improving support for family members of deceased users.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span>The change is welcome from many members of the Twitter community, who have found themselves the target of harassment and cyberbullying and found limited support from Twitter's moderators. </span></p>

Twitter Is Changing Its Policies Following Harassment Of Robin Williams' Daughter

But she always has him in mind.</p><p>After his death, Zelda received an outpouring of support. It was an emotional time, as <a href="http://www.ew.com/article/2016/07/08/zelda-williams-dead-summer-transgender-drew-robin-williams">she told Entertainment Weekly</a>.</p><p>"I was really appreciative of the fact that everyone loved Dad so much, but [I] did get looked at like a butterfly that you were going to damage, and that's in its own way sweet, but also alienating and difficult," she told EW. "I had an enormous amount of time to myself."</p><p>Zelda and her father were close. Growing up, the two bonded over movies, comic books, and video games. She was even named after the Zelda in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fBKjjgkMHM">the game series</a> "The Legend of Zelda." Without him, Zelda said she felt unmoored.</p><p>"Maybe out of stubbornness, but also out of independence, I never asked him for a road map - I didn't want the curiosity to be dampened for me," she told EW. "I had to figure this out before he was gone, and now I definitely have to figure it out on my own. But I'm enjoying that process."</p><p>Since Robin's death, Zelda has been working in independent movies. She's now starring in a horror drama TV series "Dead Summer," where she plays a transgender counselor at the summer camp where the show is set.</p><p>She's excited about playing the role of the type of person who's often underrepresented in media, even though she isn't a trans actor herself. Zelda told EW that she spoke with trans men to inform how she plays her character, believing the trans community "deserves an honest portrayal."</p><p>"He missed out on me being proud of myself by about a year and a half," she said. "That's the one thing that's really sad for me, because I know he was always proud of me. Robin Williams' Daughter Releases First Heartbreaking Statement

It's the first set of new songs released on her own label imprint, Clover <keyword id="6354530" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="music">Music</keyword> — and, to hear JoJo tell it, the first time she has felt completely in control of her creative output.</li><li>The songstress described her new album as a "delicious journey" and "a way of holding myself accountable."</li><li>"I really want to look back at that time in my life and be like, 'Remember when I just kept doing the same thing over and over again? That s--- was crazy," she said. Next up: JoJo.</em></p><p>JoJo is sitting composedly on the carpeted floor in her Los Angeles home, pondering a concept I think about fairly often — but a concept that, I imagine, is far more complex for someone who has been famous since she was a tween.</p><p>How are you different, I asked, from the person your adolescent self thought you'd be in your late 20s?</p><p>"I think I'm more spiritual than I ever considered being," she decides. "And I thought I would have a lot more money."</p><p>"Success to me looked like <em>things</em>," she explained. "When I was younger, I never thought that I would have had to go through a lot of uncomfortable things, personally and professionally. You just don't think about that. You don't think about the adversity that you're inevitably going to face, whatever path you go on."</p><p><div type="image" title="jojo zoom" height="900" width="1200" msid="75494830" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"But I'm proud of the way that I've created a life for myself and with people," she concluded, "and that I can look in the mirror and be like, 'Damn, you're strong, but you're still soft, and I'm proud of you.' You know?"</p><p>Throughout our conversation, conducted via Zoom, the 29-year-old singer-songwriter was consistently warm and disarmingly honest. Even though she had big plans for 2020 — most notably, <a href="https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/9344843/jojo-tour-dates-2020-good-to-know">a tour that's now been postponed</a> — she says she's "really thankful" to have her mom as her quarantine buddy and, of course, for the opportunity to connect and share new music with fans. She even filmed a music video in her friend's front yard.</p><p>"We were able to follow the quarantine guidelines," JoJo told me, referring to the video's director, Zelda Williams. "She wore a mask and shot me for a few hours, and I just channeled my inner Sports Illustrated. I sprayed myself down with tons of sunscreen and lotion and I'm just there doing my thing."</p><p>"It made me feel a little bit normal," she continues, before pausing and chuckling. "I mean, that's really not a normal thing to do. But it was fun to play and to channel that 90's feeling from the song into a visual."</p><h2>JoJo, born Joanna Levesque, was propelled into the spotlight at 13 years old</h2><p>JoJo's debut single, "Leave (Get Out)" — which she initially balked at, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Qpk1cb9C7Q">insisting it was too pop for her taste</a> — was released in 2004. With her powerhouse vocals and the song's irresistible kiss-off lyrics, it shot to the top of Billboard's Pop Songs chart, making JoJo the youngest female solo artist ever with a No. 1 hit. </p><p>With her follow-up single, "Baby It's You," and her second album's lead single, 2006's "Too Little Too Late," JoJo had three top 40 hits before she had even turned 15.</p><p>"I felt a lot of correlation between the way I felt about myself and achievement, or the way I felt about myself and people freaking out over me," she said. "That's a dangerous place to get your self-worth from. I mean, it's not like it was this big, unhealthy thing. It was something very subtle, but pervasive."</p><p>But unrest had already begun quietly brewing at her label. JoJo's perceived achievement, it seemed, was a limited quantity in her teenage years.</p><p>In the years following her sophomore album, she says she turned in "hundreds" of new songs, but none were ever heard. Blackground Records <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Qpk1cb9C7Q">"was no longer a functioning record label,"</a> she says, but still wouldn't release her from her contract. </p><p>When JoJo was 18, she decided to sue. During the <a href="https://www.nylon.com/entertainment/jojo-on-her-new-album-and-growing-up-in-the-music-industry">highly publicized legal battle that followed</a>, she wasn't able to make money by releasing music.</p><p>Although the young icon had already starred in popular movies like "Aquamarine" and "RV," alongside actors like Emma Roberts and Robin Williams, she never seriously considered rerouting to forge a career in Hollywood.</p><p>"I fell into a serious depression when I wasn't able to release music, when I realized that I didn't own my voice, and that I was basically told that I should give up on the dream that I started out when I was a little girl," she told me. "So I didn't pursue acting seriously. I was too sad."</p><p>Finally, her lawyers managed to find a loophole, which released her from her contract after seven years.</p><p>Despite her traumatic, hard-fought battle to break free from the music industry's trappings — from the contract that claimed ownership of her brand, voice, and likeness from an obscenely early age — she still emerged triumphantly, emphatically, as JoJo.</p><p>"I've achieved so much as JoJo, and it just felt like it would've been weird and off-putting and distracting actually if I was [to change my stage name]," she said. "I've worked really f---ing hard to be here. To start from square one with a new name? Nah, I don't think so."</p><h2>'Good to Know,' JoJo's fourth studio album, is the music she's always wanted to make</h2><p>JoJo signed to Atlantic Records in 2014 and released her first album in 10 years, "Mad Love," in 2016. She recently told <a href="https://www.nylon.com/entertainment/jojo-on-her-new-album-and-growing-up-in-the-music-industry">Nylon</a> that she's "proud" of the final product, but the creative process was a struggle: "I felt misunderstood and I didn't feel heard."</p><p>Shortly after its release, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/interscope/posts/welcome-to-the-family-jojo-/10155516905225030/">she left Atlantic and teamed up with Interscope</a> to create her own label imprint, Clover Music.</p><p>"The concern was definitely, 'Do I want to sign another contract?' Because contracts are wack," she told me. "But at the end of the day, labels still have more money than I do. So it's nice to have that partnership and to have all the different departments working together. I believe in collaboration."</p><p><div type="image" title="jojo good to know" height="731" width="731" msid="75494833" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"Good to Know," JoJo's fourth studio album, was released on Friday. After she <a href="https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/8493194/jojo-interview-new-versions-the-high-road-old-albums">re-recorded her first two albums and closed that door</a>, hearing JoJo talk about her new music is like hearing someone talk about their first-ever tropical vacation after they spent years saving up to afford it.</p><p>"It's always nerve-wracking to make something and then share it with people," she says, thoughtfully. "But I'm really focused on delivering for the people who I know love me. I'm not a pizza, and not everybody's going to love me. I can't satisfy everybody."</p><h2>'I was wanting to escape myself at that time'</h2><p>From the very first moment this album takes shape, like an interstellar storm cloud forming in your brain, JoJo says exactly what she means: "Feed me love, sex, and drugs" are the very first words you hear her sing.</p><p>"Bring me more, it ain't enough," she continues in her signature pitch-perfect warble. "Tell me I'm pretty, yeah, I need that / Think I'm too sober, where the weed at? / Pay me attention."</p><p>"Bad Habits" is a shimmering, seductive intro track — but also smirking, almost sinister. Of course, that effect was intentional.</p><p>"That's where I was in the beginning of the album process," JoJo said. "I wouldn't have defined myself as a dark person necessarily, but I was wanting to escape myself at that time. And I was just in this toxic pattern of an on-again-off-again relationship, and dipping out of that and just getting out of my mind. So I think that that line just sums it up, and yeah, it's a bit of a slap in the face."</p><p>Next comes the one-two punch of "So Bad" and "Pedialyte," a pair of buzzy confessionals — about dreaming of sex with an ex-boyfriend and cyclically unhealthy drinking habits, respectively — with hard, thumping beats.</p><p><div type="image" title="JoJo" height="1451" width="1934" msid="75494836" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Later, JoJo agonizes over a relationship that ended poorly on "Think About You," which she describes as the album's most personal track. (I tell her I might use that phrase in future reviews, and she laughs heartily.)</p><p>"The song spilled out because I was going through this thing where I couldn't forgive myself about the way my last relationship ended, and I just had a lot of unresolved feelings," she explained. "So I just was thick in there, in my feelings, and that tempo felt right to me."</p><p>"I actually sent it to the guy who I wrote it about," she tells me later, "so now I'm just going to be in my feels when I perform it."</p><p>I ask her what he thought of it, and she grins sheepishly.</p><p>"He was like, 'It's just really interesting to hear your side of it.'"</p><h2>'Remember when I just kept doing the same thing over and over again? That s--- was crazy'</h2><p>The focused, 11-song tracklist consistently blends raw, diaristic lyrics with catchy, pop-infused melodies.</p><p>Whether it's the softer swoons of "Gold," the sexy self-love anthem "Man," or the heady slow jam "Lonely Hearts," "Good to Know" is the work of an undeniable star and her unabashed self-examination — like a combination of Kehlani's serpentine R&amp;B and Demi Lovato's confessional album "Tell Me You Love Me," with the vocal chops to rival both. </p><p>When I ask whether writing this album was a way to move beyond her potentially questionable habits, or whether it helped her accept her flaws as they are, JoJo chuckles and admits: "I think it's a mix of both."</p><p>"I think it's a way of holding myself accountable," she explains. "I really want to look back at the time in my life and be like, 'Remember when I just kept doing the same thing over and over again? That s--- was crazy. I don't want to do that again. I'm really not interested in it.'"</p><p>"I have distracted myself, I have settled, I have gone against my gut — and I want to find that peace and that comfort, and that confidence in myself," she continues. "With a song like 'Man,' it's something that you act out, bigging yourself up until you really believe it."</p><p>"But then," she concludes breezily, "with just grossly transparent vulnerability — that's just my default mode. I'm recklessly honest in my daily life.
