Kargil, Nov 10 () Ladakh Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal on Tuesday inaugurated four new Reliance Jio mobile towers to the people of Zanskar while assuring them that more such installations would be erected and made functional in the next few months. A dozen towers were sanctioned for the sub-division under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) to provide better service to local residents, an official spokesman said. After inaugurating the mobile towers set up at Pibiting, Padum, Akshow and Abran areas, Namgyal congratulated the people of Zanskar for accessing mobile connectivity through the functioning of the four Jio towers and said the rest of the towers would be erected and made functional in the next few months. He expressed his gratitude to the Centre for according priority to the remotest and most backward areas of Ladakh like Zanskar to be digitised in a very short span of time. The MP also thanked the Union Minister for Telecommunication Ravi Shankar Prasad for sanctioning 54 towers for Ladakh parliamentary constituency under USOF while giving positive consideration to the demand projected by him in Parliament during the last winter session. Leh, Apr 28 () Two members of a family were tested positive for coronavirus in Ladakh, taking the total number of cases in the union territory to 22, a senior government official said on Tuesday. However, 16 of the patients were already cured and discharged from hospitals. "We have received 32 sample reports from NCDC (National Centre for Disease Control), New Delhi and two of them are positive," Commissioner Secretary (Health) Rigzin Samphel told reporters here. He said both the cases are members of the same family hailing from Sankoo village, which was already declared a containment zone last month. "They had returned to Kargil from Delhi on February 29. We have identified 29 contacts of these people and segregated them in high-risk and low-risk categories, besides taking their samples for testing," he said.Samphel said the 11 people in the high-risk category were shifted to isolation wards, while 18 others in the low-risk category were put under home quarantine. Meanwhile, over 230 stranded passengers left Leh in a fleet of 29 vehicles, including four SRTC buses, for their homes in Zanskar sub-division of Kargil district on Tuesday morning. With this, a total of over 850 residents of Zanskar who were left stranded in Leh and Kargil due to the lockdown imposed to curb the COVID-19 spread have reached their homes, the officials said, adding that they were directed to remain in home quarantine for the next 14 days. Welcoming the evacuation of the stranded passengers, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Kargil Feroz Ahmad Khan appealed to Lieutenant Governor Radha Krishna Mathur for facilitating inter-state movement of stranded people of Kargil in different parts of the country and provision of security for bringing these passengers back home.In a letter to the LG Ladakh, Khan stated that in view of the prevailing situation due to COVID-19 and the problems being faced by the residents of Kargil stranded outside UT Ladakh due to the extended lockdown, subsequent cessation of traffic, besides hot climatic conditions, LAHDC Kargil would like to propose that it will make all necessary arrangements for bringing the residents of Kargil back home via surface transportation. "LAHDC (Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council) Kargil also plans to utilise the services of stranded taxis, private vehicles as well as SRTC and disaster management resources for ferrying residents back to their homes while strictly adhering to the standard operation procedures and guidelines issued by authorities with regard to COVID-19 mitigation," he said. Kargil, May 15 () With discharge of two COVID-19 patients including a two-year-old boy, Kargil district has been declared free of the novel coronavirus, officials said.The patients were discharged from the dedicated COVID-19 Hospital Kurbathang here as per the protocol after they tested negative twice, the officials said.Besides these two cured COVID-19 patients, six other suspected cases who tested negative were also discharged, they said.Ladakh had recorded a total of 42 cases, of whom 21 had declared cured earlier and subsequently discharged. With two more patients recovering, 19 active cases are in Leh district and their condition is stable.Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC Kargil, Feroz Ahmad Khan congratulated the people of Kargil, administration, doctors, paramedics, and all frontline warriors for their tireless efforts to make Kargil COVID-19 free and appealed to the people to strictly adhere to the SOPs and guidelines as the threat posed by the disease still exists."With the influx of local residents in thousands, there is increased risk of COVID-19 infection and the responsibility for strictly adhering to preventive measures and adherence to SOPs is of paramount importance and every individual has to play his part," he said.Khan said over 12,000 people including students, who are stranded outside Ladakh, are expected to reach Kargil in the coming days, while thousands have already returned from different parts of the country and abroad in the past two weeks. A total of 73 people tested positive for coronavirus during the past 24 hours, taking the virus count in the region to 7,939, officials said on Monday. Meanwhile, the authorities assured adequate arrangements to meet the challenge posed by the spike in the cases and announced that Ladakh is expected to receive COVID-19 vaccine by February next year. Both the latest fatalities were reported from Leh on Sunday, taking the death toll in Ladakh to 100, the officials said, adding of them, 59 deaths have taken place in Leh and rest 41 in Kargil district. Out of the 73 new cases, the officials said 69 cases were detected in Leh and four in Kargil. The officials said 55 patients were discharged after successful treatment for COVID-19, raising the number of those who have recovered from the infection to 6,911, which is 87 per cent of the total cases. The active cases in the Union territory stand at 928, that is, 820 in Leh and 108 in Kargil, they said. Normal life was disrupted in Leh town on Monday following a call for week-long lockdown given by the civil society group to prevent the spread of the infection. All shops and business establishments, except medical shops, remained closed, while most of the public and private transport remained off the roads in response to the lockdown call. Allaying fears of the public, Commissioner Secretary, Health and Medical Education, Ladakh Rigzin Samphel said all necessary arrangements have been put in place to deal with the pandemic in the coming winter months. "Ladakh is expected to receive COVID-19 vaccines by the month of February next year for which 17 points in Kargil and 15 points in Leh have already been recognised for their storage. "On receiving the vaccines, the medical fraternity and senior citizens would be given preference for receiving the vaccination," he told reporters. About the civil society sponsored lockdown in Leh district, Samphel appreciated the overall cooperation and assistance of the civil society of Ladakh and termed it as an example for others to follow. He also appealed to the general public to follow and adhere to the SOPs issued by the government to contain the spread of coronavirus. The official said all arrangements have been made by the administration to keep the COVID centres winter-ready and functional in the coming months. "The district administrations of Leh and Kargil have made seven COVID care centres fully functional with adequate facilities in Kargil and five in Leh district. The administration has made a 200 bed facility in Kargil hospital and in the coming days, the ICU unit in SNM hospital in Leh will see an increased facility of 120 beds," he said. Samphel said arrangements with regards to heating and oxygen facilities along with complete stocking of medicines have already been made across the region. "Hospitals of Leh and Kargil are fully equipped with sufficient oxygen facilities. Also, an addition of 100 nurses each in Leh and Kargil hospitals will be made available," the officer said. 4. Warwan Valley: The efforts to reach this heavenly valley are worth it as you have to cross the tricky Margan Top (from where the famous Nun Kun peak can be seen on a clear day). Another gem in the unexplored Kashmir, Warwan valley in Kishtwar district situated at an altitude of approx 7000 feet from sea level offers breathtaking vistas of greenery, waterfalls and clear skies. Warwan valley is sandwiched between Kashmir and Ladakh.
