As a result, its losses nearly quintupled year-on-year to north of $620,000.Notably, Hometown boasted $1.4 million of cash at the end of 2020, thanks to a share sale last April that generated $2.5 million of proceeds. That's a huge figure given the company estimates it has about 60 shareholders in total.

As a result, Paulsboro looks like a mix of New Jersey shore town with Philadelphia's dense suburban housing.From the sleepy residential street its on, you'd never know that Your Hometown Deli is worth over $100 million.<div type="image" title="Your Hometown Deli (street in Paulsboro, New Jersey)" height="3024" width="4032" msid="82299233" hostid="261"></div>When I got to Your Hometown Deli just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday, they were about to close early - their normal hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., I was told by an employee, but for undisclosed reasons the deli was closing early when I visited.Thankfully, I was still able to get in an order, and I couldn't help but notice the telltale signs of a shop that specializes in cheesesteaks.<div type="image" title="Your Hometown Deli (inside)" height="3024" width="4032" msid="82299235" hostid="261"></div>Anyone from Philly and the surrounding suburbs may have already noticed, but the "hot sandwiches" section starts with some pretty clear indicators: The very first sandwich listed is "plain steak," which is Philadelphian for "cheesesteak without cheese." From there, you've got a smattering of other Philly-area staples, from the standard cheesesteak, to the "pizza steak" (cheesesteak with pizza sauce), and even several varieties of chicken cheesesteak. Having gone to college in Philly (go Owls!) and married a Pennsylvanian, I'm all too familiar with this menu. Any good deli or pizza shop in eastern Pennsylvania or South Jersey has some version of the list in Your Hometown Deli.As is to be expected of a deli with little foot traffic potential, I was the only customer during my whole time there. <div type="image" title="Your Hometown Deli (dining room)" height="2994" width="3992" msid="82299238" hostid="261"></div>Critically, $105 million market cap aside, the cheesesteak was genuinely delicious. At about $12 for the special with fries and a drink, it was a pretty reasonable price for lunch as well.For context: I am an unabashed cheesesteak superfan, and a longtime loyalist to Jim's Steaks in Philly. My lunch at Your Hometown Deli wasn't quite to the level of Jim's (frankly, few cheesesteaks are), but for a deli in a small New Jersey town that seemingly exists as a front, they make a damn fine cheesesteak.<div type="image" title="Your Hometown Deli (cheesesteak)" height="2423" width="3231" msid="82299241" hostid="261"></div>The characteristics of a standard cheesesteak are simple: Chopped, thinly-sliced beef, cheese, and a squishy-but-firm roll. Do you want onions and, if so, raw or fried? Hot or sweet peppers? American, whiz, or provolone cheese? Ketchup? People customize cheesesteaks in a lot of different ways.In Reading, Pennsylvania, where my wife is from, it's standard to get marinara sauce on your sandwich. I think that is crazy, but they probably think I'm crazy for not doing it. At Your Hometown Deli, I got a cheesesteak with American cheese, fried onions, and banana peppers - my go-to cheesesteak order. It was greasy, and cheesy, and exploding with savory umami occasionally cut by the acidic brightness of pickled yellow peppers.It did that amazing thing that happens with good cheesesteaks where the fat and cheese meld and attempt to escape out the bottom, thus turning the last bite into the most flavorful bite.<div type="image" title="Your Hometown Deli (cheesesteak)" height="2994" width="3992" msid="82299245" hostid="261"></div>While it makes a great lunch experience, Your Hometown Deli certainly didn't feel like a $100 million business.The building itself is mostly cinder blocks, and looks more suited for a VFW outpost than a food establishment. There are no golden fountains out front, and the only indication that it's open for business is a flag waiving in the wind.<div type="image" title="Your Hometown Deli" height="2994" width="3992" msid="82299249" hostid="261"></div>In <a href="https://sec.report/Document/0001213900-21-018020/#a_003">its most recent 10-K filing</a>, Your Hometown Deli is described as, "a new 'Delicatessen' concept" which sells, "'home-style' sandwiches, food items, and groceries in a casual and friendly atmosphere." That "concept" is said to be the basis for the company's $105 million market value, but what I experienced was a stereotypical deli with a better-than-average cheesesteak. Got a tip? But, as soon as I boarded my return flight, I realized I couldn't wait to get back home.Though I love <a href="https://www.insider.com/solo-travel-tips-vacations-advice">exploring new cities</a>, I could not imagine another city to fall in love with over and over again. I've lived here for my nearly 23 years of life and there are four reasons I can't imagine another homebase. <h2>There is immense diversity in space and people</h2>While sometimes Los Angeles feels like a small town when I run into secondary school teachers or college professors, the city is <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-that-surprised-brit-visiting-la-for-first-time-2020-2#that-space-translates-to-nearly-everything-else-like-the-food-2">massive</a>, stretching more than 469 square miles and <a href="https://www.welikela.com/how-big-is-los-angeles/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dwarfing other major US cities.</a>In addition, as <a href="https://wallethub.com/edu/most-diverse-cities/12690" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one of America's most diverse cities</a>, Los Angeles is home to people <a href="https://www.discoverlosangeles.com/media/facts-about-la" target="_blank" rel="noopener">from 140 countries who speak 224 different languages</a>. It means each street in LA feels like its own neighborhood with its own distinct feel and rhythm.For example, while the Fairfax district has become a haven for sneakerheads and Instagram-famous eateries, historically it was a Jewish enclave where Eastern European immigrants set up businesses after World War II. Today, the signs of the delis still exist, with the famous Canter's Deli persisting against a tide of change.This is true of other neighborhoods too — even as they change, signs in Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, and other languages remain as a testament to the people who made the pockets of Los Angeles what they are today.<h2>The food is filled with stories</h2>Another benefit of living in such a diverse place is that people have brought recipes from home.There's a stereotype that LA is a green-juice wasteland, but in my experience that's just not true. It's a city fed on <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-restaurants-where-to-eat-in-los-angeles-california">a wide variety of foods</a> from the immigrants that come here. It means I've had my fair share of the Oaxacan mole, sea urchin, doro wat, and more.I only have to jump in my car — it is LA, after all — and drive a few minutes to try something new. And then I get to hear someone's story over some food — the great connector and a key part of what I believe makes Los Angeles a beautiful city. <h2>The climate is second to none</h2><div type="image" title="The flowers in bloom on a hill near Will Rogers Beach in the Pacific Palisades." height="3024" width="4032" msid="102234502" hostid="261" sizebytes="1127792"></div>In Los Angeles, we often gloat about the number of sun-drenched days we have — <a href="https://www.discoverlosangeles.com/media/facts-about-la" target="_blank" rel="noopener">we get almost 300 sunny days a year,</a> and RedFin ranks us as the <a href="https://www.redfin.com/blog/sunniest-cities-in-the-us/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">8th sunniest city</a> in the US. And of course, the city is packed with smaller venues where up-and-coming artists can make a name for themselves. I never need to doubt if a show or artist is coming to the city because the number of stadiums and venues mean they most definitely are.There's simply no shortage of things to do — I can text a friend that I want to go to the beach, or a hike, or (because they're near-ubiquitous) a farmers' market, and find myself there less than an hour later.Los Angeles is recognized worldwide for everything it has to offer — the city will be hosting its third summer Olympics <a href="https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/los-angeles-2028" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in 2028.</a> When the time comes, I'm thrilled more people will get to experience my home city and realize why it's one of the best.

We set out to chart the divisions in America - here's what we found

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image">WawaWawa's hoagies are the convenience store's most popular menu item.</div></div></div>Wawa is one of the only convenience stores on the planet with a cult following.
The Philadelphia-based gas station chain has 1.2 million fans on Facebook and more than 30,000 followers on Twitter. It's ranked as the 40th largest private company by <a href="http://www.forbes.com/companies/wawa/">Forbes</a> with an estimated $9.02 billion in revenue from just 625 stores in six states.
We asked people from Wawa-inhabited towns about why the chain is so popular. Here are the top reasons:
<h3>1. The hoagies </h3>
The hoagie sandwiches, which cost just $4.79, are Wawa's most popular menu item. The dough is from Philadelphia bakery Amaroso and it's baked fresh in the store. You can get a 4-inch Junior, a 6-inch Shorti, or a 10-inch Classic and choose from one of 32 <a href="http://www.wawa.com/WawaWeb/Hoagies.aspx#479classichoagies">original combinations</a> including the Buffalo Breaded Chicken, the Pepperoni Pizza, and the Oven Roasted Turkey. You can also build your own hoagie.
<h3>2. All the other hot and freshly prepared food </h3>
Most people don't associate convenience stores with fresh, good food. Wawa has managed to become an anomaly in that respect. In addition to the famous hoagies, Wawa offers dozens of other freshly prepared menu items, including quesadillas, soups, salads, wraps, and snacks like hot stuffed pretzels and buffalo chicken bites. Wawa also sells a range of desserts, including the oven-baked S'More Pie.
Some of its menu items are also surprisingly sophisticated. "Lobster bisque and prime rib are two surprises on the Wawa menu; Neither is quite expected when one thinks of convenience store food, but there they are," Tessa Kettelberger wrote on the blog <a href="http://m.phillyburbs.com/blogs/reality/top-reasons-why-i-love-wawa-food/article_a2ad87ae-d383-50ad-b5de-c16997e06cf8.html?mode=jqm">PhillyBurbs.com</a>. "Sure, they may not be the same at Wawa as they are at a nice restaurant, but still, I love being able to order more 'sophisticated' foods at Wawa."

<h3>3. The free ATMS </h3>
Wawa doesn't charge for cash withdrawals.
<h3>4. The touch-screen menus at the deli counters for customizing food orders</h3>
 This makes ordering fast and easy, with very little room for error. Wawa was one of the first convenience stores to implement touch-screen menus. 
<h3>5. The service</h3>
<div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image">Wawa</div></div>In a 2005 study on the loyalty of Wawa's fans, Ohio State University professor Neeli Bendapudi found that customers repeatedly cited employee friendliness as a top draw to the convenience store.
"While many convenience store chains have focused on speed of transactions and volume of sales per store, Wawa... [has] made a concerted effort to build customer loyalty through a sense of community," Bendapudi wrote in an article in the <a href="http://hbr.org/2005/05/creating-the-living-brand/ar/1">Harvard Business Review</a>.
<h3>6. The convenience factor</h3>
Every square inch of space in Wawa is specifically engineered get you in and out as quickly as possible. "Starbucks built its cult following by making its stores inviting places to linger for an hour; Wawa stays popular by getting everyone the hell out," Don Steinberg wrote in <a href="http://www.phillymag.com/articles/it-s-a-wawa-world/4/">Philadelphia magazine</a>. "Everything is designed for speed, which translates to turnover, customer contentment and, essentially, profit."
<h3>7. The house-brand foods and drinks</h3>

Wawa has its own dairy farm, which opened in 1903, where it produces its own ice cream and milk. Wawa also has its own branded coffee, iced tea, soda, orange juice and more.
<h3>8. The breakfast</h3>
 Wawa's "Sizzli" is its branded breakfast sandwich, which you can order a dozen different ways on a bagel, croissant, biscuit, or french toast.
<h3>9. The hours</h3>
Most stores stay open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 
<h3>10. It's the place to be </h3>
"I love the fact that almost every time I'm at Wawa, I see someone there I know," writes Kettelberger.
<h3>11. Not everyone has a Wawa</h3>
Not everyone gets to enjoy Wawa. Wawa has roughly 625 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and central Florida. People who grow up around Wawa are proud to call it their hometown convenience store and they yearn for it when they are away.
