This development follows a setback earlier this year when <keyword id="20410154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm-Payments-Bank-Limited" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Paytm Payments Bank Limited" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Paytm Payments Bank Limited">Paytm Payments Bank Limited</keyword> (PPBL), an associate company of Paytm, was barred from adding new users to its UPI platform due to regulatory concerns raised by the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI). <h2>Paytm gets permission to onboard new UPI users </h2> In a regulatory filing on Tuesday evening, Paytm disclosed that NPCI granted permission for the company to resume onboarding UPI users, provided it complies with all procedural guidelines and circulars issued by the corporation. “We would like to inform you that vide letter dated October 22, 2024, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has granted approval to the Company to on-board new UPI users, with adherence to all NPCI procedural guidelines and circulars,” Paytm said in the filing. This move is seen as a relief for the company, which has been under scrutiny following the RBI’s intervention in January. The NPCI, which had previously allowed Paytm to operate as a Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP) for UPI transactions, has now reinstated its ability to bring new users onto the platform, albeit with strict conditions. Paytm can continue UPI operations through its partnerships with major banking institutions, including SBI, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and YES Bank. The NPCI’s approval comes after a thorough review of Paytm’s compliance with procedural guidelines, including those pertaining to risk management, app branding, multi-bank participation, and data privacy. The fintech firm has been instructed to adhere to key regulatory frameworks, such as the Payments and Settlement Act of 2007 and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023. This approval follows a request by Paytm’s parent company, <keyword id="20253123" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="One97-Communications" source="keywords">One97 Communications</keyword> Ltd (OCL), in August, seeking permission to resume UPI onboarding. The NPCI’s decision also reflects that Paytm has addressed concerns raised in the RBI’s directive from earlier this year, which had highlighted persistent non-compliance issues with its banking subsidiary, PPBL. On a related note, Paytm reported a strong financial performance for the quarter ending September 2024. The company posted a net profit of ₹928.3 crore, a marked improvement from the ₹290.5 crore loss it recorded during the same period last year. <h2>What had happened? </h2> For the unversed, in January 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) told Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL) to stop accepting deposits and processing UPI top-ups. This decision stemmed from ongoing concerns about the bank’s compliance and serious issues that needed addressing. As a result, Paytm found itself unable to onboard new UPI users, significantly disrupting its growing customer base and raising doubts about its future in the crowded <keyword id="19989657" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments" source="keywords">digital payments</keyword> market. However, things took a turn for the better in March 2024 when the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) gave Paytm the green light to resume UPI transactions. The catch? Paytm could only operate as a Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP), meaning it had to partner with established banks like SBI, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, and YES Bank for its UPI services. At 12:54 a.m, Yes Bank shares had recovered some of the losses to trade at ₹15.75, lower by 4.55%. Meanwhile, the benchmark indices were also under pressure with all sectoral indices in the red. The Sensex and the Nifty were down 0.5% each while the Nifty Bank index fell 0.80%. For context, in March 2020, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had imposed a reconstruction scheme and superseded Yes Bank’s board due to a steady decline in the lender’s financial position, which struggled to raise adequate capital to make provisions for potential non-performing assets. As part of the reconstruction scheme, a consortium of 10 institutional investors led by State Bank of India (SBI) had infused ₹10,000 crore in Yes Bank to bail out the lender. Besides SBI, Axis Bank, IDFC First Bank and ICICI Bank are the other major banks that took part in the bailout. The institutional investors were mandated to hold 75% of their shares bought as part of the rescue plan for three years until March 13, 2023. RBI had also asked SBI to hold at least a 26% stake in Yes Bank till March 2023. As of December 31, SBI held 26.14% stake, IDFC First Bank had 1%, Axis Bank had 1.57% and ICICI Bank held a 2.61% stake in Yes Bank. Meanwhile, LIC held a 4.34% stake in the private-sector lender. In December 2022, Yes Bank concluded the sale of stressed assets to JC Flowers Asset Reconstruction Company on loans worth ₹48,000 crore, which led to a substantial reduction in the bank’s gross non-performing assets. Also, Yes Bank’s financials have been improving since the crisis in 2020. The bank reported a net profit of ₹1,066 crore in FY22 after a net loss of ₹3,462 crore in the previous fiscal year. In fact, FY22 was the first full-year of profit since FY19. In Q3 FY23, Yes Bank said it has recorded a "sustained improvement" in non-performing asset ratios. The gross non-performing asset (GNPA) ratio stood at 2% in the December quarter, as against 14.7% last year. Yes Bank shares tank over 12% as 3-year shareholder lock-in period ends

Just ahead of its mega <keyword id="20008249" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FPO" source="keywords">FPO</keyword> opening to <keyword id="21332860" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-investors" source="keywords">public investors</keyword>, <keyword id="19899016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone-Idea" source="keywords">Vodafone Idea</keyword> (<keyword id="20062540" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vil" source="keywords">VIL</keyword>) has announced closure of its anchor book allocation, raising about Rs 5,400 crore from marquee global as well as domestic investors, according to a statutory filing by the <keyword id="20132985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="telco" source="keywords">telco</keyword>. This could be the third-largest anchor book after One 97 Communications and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC). One 97 Communications and LIC had raised Rs 8,235 crore and Rs 5,627 crore in the anchor round, respectively. In a notification to the exchanges on Wednesday, VIL said it has allotted 490.9 crore shares to 74 funds at Rs 11 apiece, which is also the upper end of the price band. This translated into a transaction size to Rs 5,400 crore. Of the total allocation to <keyword id="21330641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="anchor-investors" source="keywords">anchor investors</keyword>, 79.52 crore stocks, or 16.2 per cent of the total, were allocated to five domestic mutual fund through a total of 11 schemes. Those who were allotted shares include GQG Partners Emerging Markets Equity Fund, Fidelity, UBS Fund Management, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Australian Super, Troo Capital, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup Global Markets Mauritius, and Jupiter Fund Management. Additionally, domestic investors, including Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund, SBI General Insurance and Quant Mutual Fund, were allocated shares in the anchor round. The Rs 18,000-crore FPO of Vodafone Idea will open for public subscription on April 18 and conclude on April 22, marking the biggest FPO in the country. The price band has been set at Rs 10-11 per share. Prior to this, the largest FPO in the Indian market was a Rs 15,000 crore share-sale by YES Bank in 2020. The fundraise would give the ailing telco the firepower to improve its positioning in the Indian telecom market, where it currently trails larger rivals such as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, by a wide margin. The funds will also help VIL shore up finances for the much-delayed <keyword id="20366727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-rollout" source="keywords">5G rollout</keyword> and strengthening 4G services, and payment of vendor dues. On April 6, the VIL Board approved raising Rs 2,075 crore from promoter Aditya Birla Group and increasing its authorised share capital to Rs 1 lakh crore. Earlier this year, Vodafone Idea had outlined plans to raise Rs 45,000 crore through a mix of equity and debt as it looked to match services offered by rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel and arrest an alarming and prolonged subscriber churn. VIL has also been fighting a desperate battle for survival, saddled with debt of Rs 2.1 lakh crore and quarterly losses. According to Trai data, Vodafone Idea continued to bleed on the subscriber front. VIL lost 15.2 lakh wireless subscribers, plunging its mobile subscriber base to 22.15 crore in January, in sharp contrast to subscriber gains by Jio and Airtel.

<ul><li><keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>’s move to raise the CRR on banks’ incremental NDTL will raise cost of funds and impact profitability, say experts.</li><li>Bank Nifty has fallen by 183 points or 0.4% as of 12 pm on Friday, and BSE Banex by 164 points or 0.3%.</li><li>Most private sector banks are trading in the red while a few public sector banks are trading in the green. </li></ul>While the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) monetary policy committee (MPC) kept base rates unchanged the hawkish tone of the governor and an increasing inflation projection — have turned the stock markets jittery. Banks will now have to deal with an increase in incremental cash reserve ratio (ICRR) for scheduled banks. In order to squeeze excess liquidity that has come in from the deposit of ₹2,000 notes into the system, the RBI has levied an ICRR of 10% must be maintained by banks for increase in net demand and time liabilities (NDTL) between May 19 to July 28. “RBI’s decision to raise the CRR on bank’s incremental NDTL between May 19 and July 28 2023 to 10% is negative for banks. This will raise their cost of funds impacting their profitability. However, since banks are experiencing good credit growth and their non-performing assets (NPAs) are declining, they can easily absorb this marginal additional cost,” said Dr V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services. Bank Nifty has been trading in the red since yesterday, and has fallen by 183 points or 0.4% as of 12 pm on Friday. BSE Bankex also fell by 164 points or 0.3% since morning. However, it’s the private banks that are taking a bigger hit with ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank trading in the red, with the exception of <keyword id="45660" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yes-bank" source="Orion">Yes Bank</keyword> and IndusInd. Despite saying that the bank is moving in the ‘right direction’ post the 2020 NPA (non-performing assets) crisis, Morgan Stanley’s target price of ₹20.5 indicates a downside of 7% from the current market price of ₹22.05. “Yes Bank's asset quality has improved, and we see further room for it to surprise on the upside in the next few years given a benign macro cycle,” the firm said, noting that it expects the pre-provisioning operating profit to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of over 50% between FY23-25. However, the brokerage says that these gains are already priced in, which limits the upside potential at current estimations. A further rerating from here on would require “much stronger execution” in terms of funding and high margin retail assets, the brokerage said. “We would like to see a more visible improvement in the earnings, though we do like the trajectory of the bank,” Hemali Dhame, associate vice president, research, Kotak Securities, told Business Insider India. Another reason for caution is the fact that the three-year lock-in period for shares acquired by State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, among other investors, will expire in March 2023. IDFC First Bank on Sunday said it will make an equity investment of Rs 250 crore in beleaguered Yes Bank to acquire 25 crore equity shares. "...duly authorized committee of the Board of Directors of IDFC FIRST Bank Ltd had at its meeting held on March 14, 2020 accorded approval for an equity investment of upto Rs 250 crores comprising upto 25 crore equity shares at a price of Rs 10 each and face value of Rs 2 each, under the proposed Scheme of Reconstruction of Yes Bank Ltd under the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, subject to regulatory and government approval(s), if any," the bank said in a BSE filing. Earlier on Saturday, Federal Bank had committed to investing Rs 300 crore in Yes Bank for subscription of its 30 crore shares. The Centre on Saturday notified the YES Bank Limited Reconstruction Scheme, 2020, a day after the Union Cabinet approved a reconstruction plan proposed by the RBI for bailing out fund-starved Yes Bank. The authorised capital of Yes Bank has been increased to Rs 6,200 crore, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday. As per the reconstruction scheme, moratorium on the troubled lender will be lifted on March 18. Under the plan, state-run SBI will infuse Rs 7,250 crore in the crisis-ridden bank and take 49 per cent equity. As per the rescue plan, ICICI Bank will invest Rs 1,000 crore, mortgage lender HDFC Rs 1,000 crore, Axis Bank Rs 600 crore, Kotak Mahindra Bank Rs 500 crore, Bandhan Bank and Federal Bank Rs 300 crore each. There will be a three year lock-in period for all the investors. However, the lock-in period for SBI would be only for 26 per cent of shareholding. It would be 75 per cent in case of other investors.
