<ul><li><strong>Global investment giant <keyword id="6354544" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kkr" source="Orion">KKR</keyword> has announced it is acquiring <keyword id="40022" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ness" source="Orion">Ness</keyword> Digital Engineering.</strong></li><li><strong>Ness is an end-to-end digital services transformation company.</strong></li><li><strong>The terms of the transaction have not been revealed.</strong></li></ul><keyword id="150061" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kohlberg-kravis-roberts" source="Orion">Kohlberg Kravis Roberts</keyword> (KKR), the popular global investment giant, has announced that it has signed definitive agreements to acquire Ness Digital Engineering from The <keyword id="1855697" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rohatyn-group" source="Orion">Rohatyn Group</keyword>.<br /><br />Ness Digital Engineering is a New Jersey-based end-to-end digital services transformation company. Ness specializes in building digital software products and platforms. The company helps organizations to build and evolve their digital platforms to enter new markets, capture new revenue and gain operational efficiencies.<br /><br />KKR has invested in its Asian Fund IV. Additional terms of the transaction have not been revealed and are subject to customary closing conditions.<br /><br />“Digital transformation and adoption is a critical strategy for businesses of all sizes worldwide. Against this backdrop, KKR believes that Ness is well-positioned for growth, supported by its exceptional, experience-led product engineering heritage,” said Gaurav Trehan, chief executive officer of <keyword id="355108" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kkr-india" source="Orion">KKR India</keyword>.<br /><br />“KKR is pleased to invest in Ness’ capabilities and looks forward to working alongside its talented team to further scale Ness’ digital-first platform, achieve its global ambitions, and better enable its customers to compete in the digital economy,” Trehan added.<br /><br />Ness is not the first technology investment by KKR. The company has already invested in several technology companies like Cloudera, an enterprise-grade hybrid data management software, <keyword id="14926663" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yayoi" source="Orion">Yayoi</keyword>, a software developer, MYOB, an online business management company, and more. The company had also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/how-much-stake-of-reliance-meta-google-kkr-and-others-have-in-jio-platforms/slidelist/92539840.cms">invested</a> $1.5 billion in Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio.<br /><br />“We are thrilled to welcome an investor of KKR’s caliber in Ness. KKR to acquire digital services transformation company Ness Digital Engineering

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Christie's luxury handbag auction is underway, with some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hermes-became-ultimate-status-symbol-2024-2">Hermès bags</a> expected to fetch six figures.</li><li>The auction highlights the high demand and limited supply of Birkins that drives up their value.</li></ul><p>If you're in the market for a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hermes-became-ultimate-status-symbol-2024-2">Hermès</a> bag that doubles as a doll house, you're in luck — as long as you have $100,000 or so to spare.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/christies-auctioneer-auction-house-what-it-takes-art-bidding-career-2019-5">Auction house Christie's</a> launched its latest handbag auction on Thursday, and seven of the lots are expected to fetch prices in the six figures.</p><p>The most expensive bags are variations of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hermes-bag-collectors-birkin-kelly-purse-2024-4">Hermès Birkin</a> — and the estimated prices, all at heavy markups from retail, show the chokehold that the French house's hero product has on the luxury market.</p><p>A new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hermes-birkin-bag-realreal-handbag-expert-so-expensive-2019-6">Birkin bag</a> starts at about $10,000 and can cost well into the six figures depending on material, size, and rarity. Each year, the company's artisans handmake a limited number of the style; in the luxury sector, that scarcity supercharges desire.</p><p>"It's literally economics 101," retail industry expert and consultant Hitha Herzog told Business Insider earlier this year. "When you have short supply and high, high demand and the branding that goes with it — that is what fuels it."</p><p>The brand's Faubourg Birkins are among those in the shortest supply and, thus, the most covetable. The bag's name refers to Hermès' Paris flagship on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where the company has been based since 1880 when it was still primarily a saddlery.</p><p>A Neige Faubourg Birkin 20 boasts the auction's highest estimated price: $120,000 to $180,000. And it could go for much more. Since 2022, Hermès bags sold at Christie's auctions have gone for an average of 141% of the lowest estimated price, Christie's said.</p><p>The rare bag's design is reminiscent of the store's facade, with its three windows and iconic orange awnings. The light gray colorway, which is supposed to convey winter in Paris, is the most valuable of the models, given the amount of exotic alligator skin used in its construction. Last year, the same style sold for just over $280,000 at a Sotheby's auction, and in 2022, another went for more than $300,000.</p><p>The other two Faubourgs available in the Christie's auction, one blue and the other brown, are expected to go for between $100,000 and $150,000. A Birkin with white gold and diamond hardware has the same estimate. Hermès handbags, particularly those in pristine condition (aka new) and rare designs, have always commanded high prices in the resale market due to their exceptional craftsmanship, timeless appeal, and limited availability.</p><p>"They are often reflective of the rarity and desirability of the bags," Nicole Pollard Bayme, the founder of luxury styling firm Lalaluxe, told BI over email. "Hermès Birkin and Kelly bags, especially the Faubourg bag, for example, are iconic symbols of luxury and status, coveted by collectors worldwide."</p><div type="image" title="crocodile Birkin with white gold and diamond hardware" height="2000" width="2000" msid="110617768" hostid="261" sizebytes="247826"></div><p>As the auction demonstrates, luxury handbags — particularly those made by tightly controlled brands like Hermès — are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jane-birkin-bag-status-symbol-best-luxury-investments-2023-7">increasingly worthy investments</a>. The Neige Faubourg retails for about $50,000 and is expected to fetch two to three times that.</p><p>A 2022 Deloitte and Credit Suisse report found that value Birkin and Chanel bags had an average return of 38% and 11.8%, respectively, in 2020. That beats the average return rate of classic cars, watches, and fine art in the same year.</p><p>"Watches and jewelry as well as handbags (especially Chanel handbags) are clearly standing out as stores of value with low volatility (between 2.5% and 5% annually) and low drawdowns," the report's authors wrote.</p><p>For the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hermes-gen-z-resale-birkin-bag-2024-4">resale premium</a>, buyers gain immediate access to the bag of their choosing, something they typically can't get at an Hermès boutique.</p><p>While the "rules" around <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/style/how-to-buy-a-birkin-bag">buying a Birkin</a> directly from Hermès have never been disclosed — the company is currently embroiled in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hermes-lawsuit-birkin-bags-tough-to-buy-sales-practices-2024-3">legal battle</a> around the practice — customers must often cultivate a yearslong spending history with the brand and relationships with sales associates. Even then, buyers don't often get to select a specific bag but are offered the opportunity to snag whichever one their sales associate can get their hands on.</p><p>"Most of our clients don't have the time or patience to play the 'Hermès game,'" Alexis Clarbour, who specializes in reselling <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/signs-hermes-bag-fake-purse-resale-counterfeit-2024-2">luxury handbags at Madison Avenue Couture,</a> told BI earlier this year.</p><div type="image" title="Louis Vuitton 2023 collaboration with artist Yayoi Kusama." height="2000" width="2000" msid="110617770" hostid="261" sizebytes="179900"></div><p>While dozens of Birkins and Kellys (Hermès' other signature style) make up the auction's priciest lots, a couple of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-spot-fake-louis-vuitton-bags-from-employee-2023-12">Louis Vuitton</a> lots are expected to fetch at least $10,000. Both are limited editions from the brand's 2023 collaboration with artist Yayoi Kusama.</p><p>Chanel, Dior, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/loewe-hottest-luxury-fashion-clothing-brand-2023-7">Loewe</a>, and Roger Vivier are also represented among the lots.</p><p>Last summer's handbag auction netted Christie's $4.1 million. Nine bags sold for over $100,000, with the top lot, a Kellywood, going for $176,400.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I traveled to my first Art Basel, an international art fair hosted each summer in Basel, Switzerland.</li><li>I learned it's a destination where experts and novices can thrive, discover, and learn.</li></ul><p>I spent my first afternoon at Art Basel getting lost.</p><p>I wandered through a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/art-basel-hong-kong-best-street-style-2024-4">maze of 122 gallerists showcasing artwork</a> from around the world. I eyed impressive ceramics created by Paloma Varga Weisz, captivating photos shot by Gordon Parks, and striking paintings by Pat Steir. I turned corners that I thought were familiar and discovered new art instead.</p><p>Above me were another 100-plus galleries presenting works. In the building next door, an exhibit the size of three football fields had enough installations for an entire afternoon of viewing. There were film showings throughout the day, a packed schedule of Q&amp;As, and public artworks scattered across the town of Basel, Switzerland.</p><p>Collectively, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/miami-beach-art-basel-what-its-like-to-visit-photos-2023-12">this made up Art Basel</a>, the world's premiere art show, where more than 250 gallerists feature 4,000 artists.</p><div type="image" title="Art Basel." height="3000" width="4500" msid="111172053" hostid="261" sizebytes="2766146"></div><p>Beyond the show's official programming, the Swiss town comes alive each summer for the event. Other art fairs vie for visitors' time. Photo Basel and the Liste Art Fair Basel are hosted on the same weekend. Plus, the town is home to dozens of art museums worth visiting.</p><p>To put it simply, Art Basel is overwhelming.</p><p>It's a hectic week of art, but even as someone outside the art profession, I understood its appeal. Art Basel is my favorite kind of overwhelming — one with endless opportunities to explore.</p><div type="image" title="Art Basel, Basel." height="3000" width="4500" msid="111172046" hostid="261" sizebytes="1741766"></div><h2 id="21296726-814f-42e4-98f5-21d61ee802bd">Before arriving in Basel, the art fair felt vaguely familiar</h2><p id="21296726-814f-42e4-98f5-21d61ee802bd">I can't pinpoint the first time I heard about Art Basel.</p><p>It could've been five years ago when a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vogue.com/article/the-120000-art-basel-banana-explained-maurizio-cattelan">duct-taped banana was listed for $120,000</a>, or it might have been years earlier. Growing up in Florida, I'm sure I heard murmurs about Art Basel Miami, one of the four locations where Art Basel fairs are held each year.</p><p>For a long time, I didn't think the event was for me. I'm not a museum curator or a gallerist, and I don't have millions to spend on artwork. (Art Basel reported that its largest sale this year was made by the gallery David Zwirner. It sold Joan Mitchell's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.artbasel.com/stories/what-has-sold-at-art-basel-in-basel?lang=en">"Sunflowers" for $20 million</a>.)</p><p>Plus, Art Basel is a place to be seen. Celebrities like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.elle.com/culture/celebrities/g46081845/celebrity-gallery-art-basel-miami-beach-2023/">Serena Williams</a> have been spotted, visitors spend afternoons crossing paths with millionaires, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.elle.com/culture/celebrities/g46081845/celebrity-gallery-art-basel-miami-beach-2023/">influencers have been lured to the fairs</a> in recent years.</p><p>I wasn't sure where or if I fit into that lineup, but I arrived in Basel on June 13 to find out.</p><div type="image" title="Nine canvases create Janaina Tschäpe's &quot;To cover the earth with a new mist.&quot;" height="2000" width="3000" msid="111172050" hostid="261" sizebytes="681892"></div><p>As a first-time visitor, understanding how Art Basel works was confusing. After arriving, getting lost, and navigating a disorganized app, I finally began understanding how the massive event works.</p><p>Art Basel is a show with multiple sectors in multiple locations. Some sectors are self-described, like the film or magazine sector. Then, there's the main sector, which fills two floors of a large hall. Here, 250 galleries from around the world showcase art.</p><p>Next door to the main sector, visitors can explore <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/art-basel-unlimited-switzerland-curator-shares-how-exhibit-comes-together-2024-6">Unlimited, a hall dedicated to large-scale installations</a>. And then there's the Parcours sector, involving art installations scattered around the town.</p><p>Essentially, art is everywhere. Unless there's someone or something specific you want to see, wandering was the best approach to take it all in.</p><h2 id="bf062642-050b-408c-865f-b374d5958199">You don't have to be an artist or art buyer to enjoy the event</h2><div type="image" title="Art Basel exhibit" height="1647" width="1206" msid="111172055" hostid="261" sizebytes="349908"></div><p>I assumed I wouldn't know a single artist featured, but I was proven wrong after just a few moments in the Unlimited sector.</p><p>At the front of the hall was a 150-foot-long Keith Haring work titled "Untitled (FDR NY) #5-22." I didn't need a plaque to know the artist; Haring's figures are easily recognizable.</p><p>Another recognizable piece sat catty-corner to Haring's project. I knew an organic shape dotted with black spots must have been created by Yayoi Kusama. I explored her exhibit, Kusama, three years ago at the New York Botanical Garden.</p><p>Throughout the week, I spotted more familiar artists and was introduced to many new ones. Francisco Sierra's full-size conceptual aquarium and Alfredo Jaar's powerful neon messages captivated me.</p><p>Plus, it was clear I wasn't the only visitor wandering the fair as a spectator. During the weekend, the Unlimited hall was filled with crowds watching artist performances on water rights by Seba Calfuqueo and peering into the hundreds of mirrors that made up "Zepelín de Acero" by Julio Le Parc.</p><p>Meanwhile, gallerists were eager to dive into the artwork they displayed, and artists proudly described their inspiration for pieces.</p><div type="image" title="Waterfront walk on Basel." height="3000" width="4500" msid="111172058" hostid="261" sizebytes="1669486"></div><h2 id="56853a9a-2392-4728-9089-c5cfdce44259"><strong>You can't explore Art Basel without exploring the town</strong></h2><p>When you travel across the world for an art show, it's hard not to squeeze in some sightseeing.</p><p>So, in the windows when I wasn't viewing art, I was roaming through the Swiss town. The town is located on the banks of the Rhine River, so I spent a lunch break on the river's edge, eyeing the historical buildings lining the waterfront.</p><p>If it had been warmer, you would've seen me floating down the Rhine with a Wickelfisch, a colorful waterproof bag locals tote during the summer months.</p><p>For those itching for even more art, theaters and popular museums like the Museum Tinguely and Fondation Beyeler present even more work.</p><div type="image" title="Art Basel" height="3000" width="4500" msid="111172047" hostid="261" sizebytes="1468634"></div><p>But my favorite way to experience the town was through Art Basel's Parcours exhibit. Across Basel, a hotel, brewery, church, restaurant, and stores exhibited art.</p><p>I stepped inside a partly abandoned shopping center. Between a closed nail salon and textile store, artist Mandy El-Sayegh covered the floors and walls and transformed two empty store spaces to feature her large-scale paintings.</p><p>Nearby, Eric Hattan used materials he scavenged to build towers and structures that were constantly being changed and transformed during the art show.</p><div type="image" title="Art sculptures scattered over Basel, Switzerland" height="3000" width="4500" msid="111172044" hostid="261" sizebytes="2629090"></div><p>The installations prompted me to walk down random Basel streets and stumble upon what the city offers beyond its top tourist attractions.</p><p>By the end of my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-peninsula-hong-kong-luxury-hotel-tour-2024-4">weekend at Art Basel</a>, I discovered an art fair that — no matter your background — stimulated discussion, encouraged me to reconsider my beliefs, and left me in awe.</p>

Art experts and millionaires head to a Swiss town once a year for its annual Art Basel festival. Here's what it's like to visit as a first-timer.  

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some X users say they're seeing lots of ads for likely fake Louis Vuitton handbags on the platform.</li><li>That's despite an X policy that "prohibits" the sale of counterfeit goods. </li></ul><p>X's ad strategy doesn't seem to be going so great. <br /><br />After Elon Musk told major advertisers to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tells-advertises-get-lost-twitter-dealbook-summit2023-11?r=US&amp;IR=T"><u>"go fuck yourself"</u></a> and "don't advertise" at The New York Times' DealBook summit Wednesday, some X users saying they're seeing lots of ads for Louis Vuitton bags that are probably fakes. </p><p>"X prohibits the sale of or promoting the sale of counterfeit goods on the platform," according to its <a target="_blank" href="https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/counterfeit-goods-policy"><u>counterfeit policy</u></a>. </p><p>But that hasn't stopped scammers from peddling the fake designer bags on its platform. </p><p>"Why is my whole feed full of scammy bag ads???," <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/rimonima/status/1729725251808858275?s=20"><u>one X user questioned</u></a> with a screenshot of some posts with the ad label. "I get so so so so many of this exact ad from different users," <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/afrosabi/status/1729872572165345516?s=20"><u>said</u></a> another user. </p><p>Granted that some of the ads appear to have been taken down, it looks like X is having to play whack-a-mole to remove dozens more popping up in its place. Users have been saying they're seeing them since Wednesday. </p><p>"Twitter had resorted to letting people place ads for their fake Louis Vuitton bags. If one more of these god damn ads shows up on my feed I swear to god," an X user <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/javavvitch/status/1730486354201440524?s=20"><u>posted</u></a> Friday. </p><p>At least one <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/GudduRexz"><u>account</u></a> that <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/andreachorst/status/1729754829440922059?s=20"><u>posted an ad</u></a>, seen by Business Insider, was restricted Wednesday, but by Friday it was reinstated. </p><p>It's not a good look for X's perceived trust and safety on the platform, nor will it help Musk retain or win back big-name advertisers. Ebiquity, which works with 70 of the world's top 100 advertisers, said just two of them <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ebiquity-data-most-advertisers-stopped-spending-x-twitter-2023-10"><u>advertised on X</u></a> in September.</p><p>Coincidentally, Taylor Fisher, head of fashion partnerships at X, <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/tayyfishyy/status/1722813784471880052?s=20"><u>shared a photo</u></a> last month with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-linda-yaccarino-twitter-ceo-nbcuniversal-elon-musk-politics-2023-5">X CEO Linda Yaccarino</a> and Americas chief, Monique Pintarelli, along with the caption: "Spent my birthday with my role models at  and the masterminds behind Louis Vuitton. @XFashion this is just the beginning." </p><p>Is X promoting the sale of counterfeit designer handbags the beginning Fisher speaks of? I think not. So the luxury fashion house is probably none too pleased to see rip-offs on X. </p><p>According to a X business <a target="_blank" href="https://business.twitter.com/en/blog/brands-enhance-interaction-with-twitter-branded-features.html"><u>blog post</u></a>, Louis Vuitton ran an ad campaign for its collaboration with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama in January, but it's unclear if it's an ad partner or big spender.</p><p>LVMH didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's questions on whether it was aware of the ads, or had taken any action.</p><p>X didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.</p>

Hey Elon – what's up with all the scammy ads for Louis Vuitton bags on X?

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I visited Art Basel Miami Beach as it turned 21 this year.</li><li>The world-famous fair is as much about being seen as it is seeing the art.</li></ul><p>The traffic is a nightmare.</p><p>I'm sitting in the back of an Uber on my way to dinner in Wynwood, anxiously refreshing Google Maps to monitor the traffic ahead.</p><p>But it's Thursday night during Miami Art Week, so what should be a 20-minute drive from South Beach takes close to two hours.</p><p>I'm in town for my first Art Basel, even though at this point I haven't yet seen a piece of art besides a print in my hotel lobby. I learn quickly that the chaos isn't confined to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/miami-beach-travel-guide-hotels-activities-restaurants-and-more-2021-10"><u>Miami Beach</u></a> Convention Center, where the world-famous annual festival is being held from December 8-10. The whole city is in party mode.</p><p>Leading up to the fair, invites to events around Miami pour into my inbox: brunches; cocktail hours; celebrity apparel pop-ups at hotels; art installations at design houses like Fendi. It's not clear if these functions are all related to the actual art festival, but that doesn't seem to matter.</p><p>My first event is the opening party for The Art of Hip-Hop's permanent space at Wynwood's Museum of Graffiti, kicking off with its first exhibit, "From the Bronx to the Beach."</p><p>We're greeted by a wall of boomboxes — an instant photo op. Then, there's the exhibit itself, an ode to hip-hop through album art, photography, and fashion. Guests in sequin boots, cutout dresses, and sheer looks meander through the displays, pausing to admire portraits of artists from Drake to Pitbull, or Henry Chalfant's photos of graffiti-covered subway trains in 1970s New York City.</p><div type="image" title="A split image shows a woman wearing a denim jacket in front of a wall of boomboxes (left) and a butterfly mural at Miami's Museum of Graffiti (right)." height="1080" width="1440" msid="106046778" hostid="261" sizebytes="216790"></div><p>Later on, LA Clippers point guard John Wall and rapper Fat Joe appear, the latter of whom performs out back where guests dance in front of a butterfly mural.</p><p>Next, I go to Gramp's, a Wynwood bar known for its drag shows. As I sip on a Rosemary's Baby cocktail, the Miami-famous drag queen Karla Croqueta declares that tonight's show is dedicated to Art Basel. "Thank you, Art Basel," Croqueta says, with more than a hint of sarcasm, before introducing the next act who lights up the stage performing Nicki Minaj's "Moment for Life" in a purple and Barbie-pink catsuit.</p><p>I realize I'm watching some of the best performance art in town.</p><h2><strong>At 21, Art Basel lives to party</strong></h2><p>This year's art fair marks its 21st year in Miami Beach. The prestigious festival originated in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970, where it continues to be held each spring, and eventually expanded into the US market with Miami in 2002. The fair is also held annually in Hong Kong and Paris.</p><p>But what started as Miami's edition of the art fair — meant to bring together the art world's major players — has since become a week-long, citywide party.</p><div type="image" title="Sculptures and paintings in a gallery." height="1500" width="2000" msid="106046780" hostid="261" sizebytes="277254"></div><p>I worry I've come too late, arriving in the middle of the week, but am assured by a Miami resident that all the good parties are on Thursday and Friday. When I tell Miami locals I want to go to the convention center, they're confused — go once if you want to, they say, but it's not really the point anymore.</p><p>They seem to be right. As I brush shoulders with influencers, publicists, and business moguls at functions filled with cocktails and canapes, I wonder where the artists are.</p><h2><strong>The actual fair means business</strong></h2><p>When I finally get to the convention center, I'm swept up in its grandness.</p><p>Inside the cavernous hall, people funnel through several entrances to the festival floor and linger around the various shops and attractions in the lobby. Before I enter, a display of Louis Vuitton purses designed with the architect Frank Gehry, catches my eye. A retail associate tells me casually the items range from $11,400 to $36,500. Welcome to Art Basel.</p><p>On the main floor, I'm surprised to see something I recognize almost immediately: a large flower sculpture covered in oversized dots — Yayoi Kusama's 2018 piece, "Flowers That Speak All About My Heart Given to the Sky." A couple poses for a photo in front of the piece with their toddler, who is fascinated by the sculpture. I spot a number of fairgoers with their kids, which I didn't expect, but there's certainly enough to keep them entertained with 277 galleries bursting with often colorful art.</p><p>I know it'll be impossible to see everything, so I plan to zigzag through the galleries like I would aisles at the grocery store, but that doesn't quite work. Inevitably, something catches my eye and I turn a corner and find myself lost in the maze that is Art Basel. Consulting my floor map, I circle the key galleries I'd read about, determined to at least see what the art world is talking about.</p><p>One piece stays with me: Seung-taek Lee's "Earth Play," an imposing, partially deflated balloon painted to look like the world. The structure is impossible to miss and makes a statement about the fragility of our planet as it sits on the floor, patched with small bits of tape covering up punctures and dents.</p><p>The piece isn't perfect — and that's the point. I read on nearby placards that the Korean artist has spent years toting the piece, from the 1990s, around the world for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.canalprojects.org/programs/the-earth-performance-reenactment"><u>performances</u></a>.</p><p>In some of the art, I search for meaning but soon give up. A beating drum hanging upside-down from the ceiling. An ASMR video of two women clapping their hands on their cheeks. A handbag with long legs. And the most perplexing: a pile of Amazon boxes on the floor. If this is art, it turns out I've been a collector all this time.</p><div type="image" title="Split image shows pieces from an art show: a yellow purse with legs (left) and a giant flower (right)." height="1080" width="1440" msid="106046781" hostid="261" sizebytes="143860"></div><p>I don't see many new political pieces, besides Julie Buffalohead's "Our Bodies Our Choice," an almost 20-foot-wide painting that seems to respond to the<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6"> <u>abortion bans</u></a> that have popped up across the country.</p><p>And while I don't come across any art acknowledging the Israel-Hamas war, the conflict looms over the festival, which cancels an outdoor art walk due to a protest.</p><div type="image" title="A giant inflatable balloon painted to resemble the Earth sits on a gallery floor surrounded by people and other art." height="1334" width="2000" msid="106046782" hostid="261" sizebytes="224832"></div><h2>The festival isn't just about art</h2><p>In most cases, the attendees of Art Basel are just as interesting as the art.</p><p>There's a fairgoer in a pastel fur-style coat who matches the colors of a portrait she's admiring. A Gen Z group poses for a selfie in a reflective sculptural piece. And a gallery staffer consults a couple about a piece of art that I struggle to understand.</p><div type="image" title="A woman wearing a pastel fur-style coat and sequin minidress poses for a photo in front of a painting." height="1500" width="2000" msid="106046783" hostid="261" sizebytes="321558"></div><p>I leave the convention center overwhelmed. Days later, I think back to a certain piece and wonder if there's something I missed. I'm aware that my Art Basel experience as a journalist, some outside observer, isn't the same as others who attended the festival to do very different work.</p><p>At the airport heading home, a woman on the phone tells someone that Art Basel was a success. I assume she's a collector, but find out she's an interior designer who picked up a few millions' worth of pieces for her clients. (That's a lot of money, but it's just a fraction of the cost of<a target="_blank" href="https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-sold-art-basel-miami-beach-2023"> <u>the fair's top-selling piece</u></a>:<a target="_blank" href="https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-6076405"> <u>Philip Guston's "Painter at Night,"</u></a> which went for a reported $20 million.)</p><p>I'm reminded that while Miami throws a big party when Art Basel comes to town, it's also a business meeting and an expensive market. There just happens to be an art fair going on at the same time.</p>

Art Basel gives Miami another excuse to party

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The world may need to wait longer than expected for affordable electric cars. </li><li>Lithium-ion battery packs got more expensive in 2022 after getting cheaper for years. </li></ul><p>Truly affordable electric cars may be even farther away than we all thought. After dropping for years, the price of lithium-ion batteries — a costly and crucial component in electric vehicles — rose in 2022, according to a <a href="https://about.bnef.com/blog/battery-pack-prices-fall-to-an-average-of-132-kwh-but-rising-commodity-prices-start-to-bite/">study from BloombergNEF</a> released Tuesday.  </p><p>The going price for the battery packs used in EVs and energy storage projects jumped to $151 per kilowatt-hour in 2022, a 7% increase over 2021. It's the first year-over-year cost increase BloombergNEF has seen since it started tracking the market for lithium-ion batteries in 2010. </p><div type="image" title="BloombergNEF graph of battery prices over time." height="618" width="1098" msid="96065322" hostid="261"></div><p>As electric cars have graduated from niche to mainstream, battery costs have plummeted. ($1,306/kWh in 2010, according to BloombergNEF.) And those steadily declining prices held the promise that someday EVs would cost roughly the same as combustion-engine cars and trucks. </p><p>But surging prices for the raw materials that go into batteries, among other factors, have delayed that future, BloombergNEF said. </p><p>"We've seen cost inflation for all input costs for batteries," Yayoi Sekine, head of energy storage research at BloombergNEF, told Insider. "It'll definitely translate to higher costs of EVs. We've already seen EV prices go up."</p><p>Lithium, she said, is 5-6 times costlier than it was last year, partially due to booming demand. (Global demand for battery capacity has roughly doubled annually in recent years.) Nickel got 2-3 times pricier amid the war in Ukraine before easing somewhat, she added, since Russia is a key supplier. </p><p>Even as battery-powered rides have grown more popular, their high MSRPs have priced out many buyers. </p><p>Americans paid an <a href="https://mediaroom.kbb.com/2022-11-09-Consumers-Pay-More-for-Both-Non-Luxury-and-Luxury-New-Vehicles-in-October,-According-to-Latest-Kelley-Blue-Book-Average-Transaction-Price-Data#:~:text=Electric%20Vehicle%20Prices,versus%20mainstream%20prices.">average of $64,249 for a new EV in October</a>, according to Kelley Blue Book. The average transaction price for all new cars was just over $48,000. According to a recent Ipsos poll, 59% of Americans <a href="https://www.ipsos.com/en-us/news-polls/improving-infrastructure-may-encourge-electric-vehicle-purchases">won't consider an EV in the next two years</a> due to the high upfront cost.</p><p>Automakers promise that cheaper EVs are coming. Chevrolet plans to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chevy-equinox-ev-range-price-release-date-cheap-electric-suv-2022-9#:~:text=The%20compact%20SUV%20will%20go,be%20in%20the%20luxury%20segment.">launch the Equinox SUV in 2023</a> with a starting price around $30,000, and a model near that price point has long been a goal of Tesla CEO Elon Musk. </p><p>BloombergNEF expects battery prices to rise slightly in 2023 before continuing their downward trend in 2024 as lithium mining and processing ramps up. Average pack prices should drop below $100/kWh — the group's rough threshold for price parity between electric and gas-powered cars — by 2026, two years later than it previously projected. </p>

contemporary art museum in Los Angeles, California, let social media users on Instagram take a deep breath with a view of the Infinity Mirrored Room, an exhibit by artist Yayoi Kusama.</p><p>The <a href="https://twitter.com/HunterMuseum/status/1239909489035423744">Hunter Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee</a>, gave Twitter users a moment of zen in honor of St. Patrick's Day — the painting "Glen Crowds flock to the two most-visited museums on the Mall, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, but for fewer crowds and equally intriguing exhibits, I head to two of my favorites: the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden to capture kitschy, Instagram-worthy shots at the newest <a href="https://hirshhorn.si.edu/exhibitions/one-with-eternity-yayoi-kusama-in-the-hirshhorn-collection/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Yayoi Kusama exhibit</a>, and the National Museum of the American Indian where an immersive storytelling exhibit tells the <a href="https://americanindian.si.edu/explore/exhibitions/item?id=976" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">indigenous story of Raven</a>. <p>Visitors got a glimpse of 19 out of the 200 artworks acquired by oil-rich Abu Dhabi that will be on public display from Wednesday until January.</p>
<p>US architect Frank Gehry designed the Abu Dhabi Guggenheim, which will be larger than its counterparts in New York, Berlin, Bilbao, Las Vegas, and Venice.</p>
<p>The exhibition "Seeing through Light: Selections from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Collection" features artworks by 19 international artists from the 1960s until present day that explore the theme of light.</p>
<p>It showcases works by contemporary artists from the United States, Europe and the Middle East, including Larry Bell, Dan Flavin, Robert Irwin, Douglas Wheeler and Keith Sonnier.</p>
<p>Works by German artist Otto Piene, founder of the Düsseldorf-based experimental artist group ZERO, as well as those by Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama, are among the pieces acquired by the museum.</p>
<p>"This group of artworks illuminates the creative vision of the future museum, offers the first glimpse of what is to come, and represents a significant milestone in the evolution of the new museum," organisers said in a statement posted on the Guggenheim website.</p>
<p>Last month the emirate, aiming to become a leader in the world of fine art, announced it would showcase masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci and Vincent van Gogh, which will be among 300 works dating back to antiquity displayed at the Louvre Abu Dhabi.</p>
<p>The museum -- part of a collaboration that saw Abu Dhabi pay $520 million (415 million euros) just to use the name of Paris' world famous gallery -- is set to open in December next year.</p>
<p>Abu Dhabi is engaged in an ambitious development plan aimed at modernising the emirate and diversifying its economy.</p>
