Women are less likely to be shown in public spaces and in paid employment; more likely to be selling domestic products and food to other women as well as responsible for childcare and shopping. Female characters in ads also tend to be thin, unlike men who are portrayed as different body types. These are some of the findings of a study released today by UNICEF and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media (GDI) on Gender Bias and Inclusion In Advertising In India. The study explores how popular Indian advertisements can replace such harmful typecasts with balanced portrayals to inspire girls and boys of their possibilities, unrestrained by gender stereotypes. “Gender socialization is a learned behaviour from childhood," says Dr. <keyword id="6262621" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="yasmin-ali-haque">Yasmin Ali Haque</keyword>, UNICEF India Representative. "Children observe and learn social cues from parents, family, and the society around them, including the advertising they see around themselves. UNICEF is committed towards ensuring gender equity and girls' empowerment, which forms the core of our gender responsive programming. This report will help us challenge biases and advocate more effectively with the Indian advertising community, and across South Asia with all businesses, to support our goal of achieving gender equality for the benefit of all children." Geena Davis, Academy Award Winning Actor, Founder and Chair of the Institute says “Misrepresentation and harmful stereotypes of women in advertising have a significant impact on women - and young girls - and how they view themselves and their value to society. While we do see female representation dominate in Indian ads, they are still marginalized by colorism, hyper-sexualization, and without careers or aspirations outside of the home. The stark inequality evident in portrayals of females in these advertisements must be addressed to ensure an equitable society. This collaborative study with UNICEF and its partners sets the foundation for improvement in India and across the globe.” Conventional gender norms constantly devalue women and girls, making it difficult to secure their rights and reach their full potential. From a declining sex ratio, girls dropping out of schools, marrying before 18 years, and not being supported to work outside the home: these all reflect a significant gap in investments in her future pathways beyond marriage. Media can help shift the narrative and provide diverse and powerful templates to fuel her aspirations and simultaneously shift people's perceptions around her. The research measures over 1,000 television and YouTube advertisements aired across India in 2019. The ads were provided and translated by the International Advertising Association (<keyword id="1546917" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IAA">IAA</keyword>), which is also committed to translating the recommendations into action, beginning with a round-table discussion to be organized by the IAA with leading business representatives. Ayushmann Khurrana becomes UNICEF India's celebrity advocate to end violence against children

New Delhi, July 15 (IANS) Unicef India on Wednesday announced its partnership with SAP India to provide career counselling to young people in the country that will improve their employability skills in a Covid and post-Covid era. Making the announcement on the World Youth Skills Day, Unicef said it is collaborating with YuWaah (Generation Unlimited) under this initiative to provide digital education and occupational skillset to the underserved young people of the country. Focused on improving digital skills and life skills, the collaboration ultimately aims to impact one million young people by the end of 2022. In a video message on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the mantra to remain relevant during the coronavirus pandemic in the country is to "skill, reskill and upskill". Young people living in rural areas are particularly vulnerable when it comes to career and employability opportunities due to limited access to information, training, opportunities or the skills to participate fully in India's modernising technology-driven economy. The national aggregate on learner-computer ratio is reported to be 1:89, suggesting an inequitable access in rural schools. Evidence suggests that technology solutions can be optimized better to address poor learning levels, low retention rates, poor life-skills, and gender inclusion. "The Unicef -YuWaah - SAP India partnership will empower young people to help them harness their creativity, problem-solving and leadership to make a difference in their lives and in their communities," Yasmin Ali Haque, Unicef Representative in India, said in a statement. New Delhi, Jul 13 () UNICEF on Monday announced its partnership with FICCI to jointly develop a campaign to support the most vulnerable populations and children during the ongoing COVID-19 response and its aftermath in India. FICCI and UNICEF will work on an action plan based on the document that is being developed jointly by the International Chamber of Commerce and UNICEF for governments and businesses on the actions they can take to support the post-pandemic recovery. Ogilvy is offering pro bono support in developing the creative narrative for the campaign, according to a statement by UNICEF. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry's (FICCI)-Socio Economic Development Foundation (SEDF) will reach out to its membership base to garner support for the campaign and leverage its resources like cash and core assets to mobilise funds that can be utilised to help generate support for the most vulnerable populations affected due to the COVID disruption. "The partnership will also help avoid potential long-term damage to business operations and employment pipelines, and their most important resource, their personnel, their children and their families," it said. While children are not the face of this pandemic, they are its hidden victims and remain the most vulnerable to the broader impact of the pandemic, the statement noted. "The impact of COVID-19 on children has the potential to be devastating and lifelong. Millions of children will have lost out on crucial cognitive development and learning time, the risk of increasing number of children and young people facing abuse and exploitation is real, and gains made in the measures of health and nutrition status of children is likely to see a decline," said Dr Yasmin Ali Haque, UNICEF Representative in India. Mumbai, Apr 8 () Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) major Hindustan Unilever on Wednesday said it has collaborated with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) for a mass communication campaign to inform and empower the general public against the COVID-19 pandemic.The campaign brings together the marketing expertise and scale of HUL and the technical knowledge of UNICEF to create engaging communication tools that can help people change behaviours and stay safe during the pandemic, the company said in a release here.HUL had recently committed Rs 100 crore in donations to help India fight the coronavirus crisis.In addition to the campaign, it is rolling out many initiatives to ensure citizens across the country have access to essential products such as soaps, sanitisers and other products.The mass media campaign, titled '#BreakTheChain' or #VirusKiKadiTodo' will have simple and powerful 5 and 15 second informative assets to empower general public with prevention strategies to protect themselves against COVID-19.Based on three key themes - social distancing, hand washing and generosity, the campaign will generate these short informative assets across India through television, news portals and prominent social media channels, it added."The need of the hour is simple and effective communication across both urban and rural India to help fight COVID-19 and our partnership with UNICEF aims to do just that. With half the children under five in India being malnourished, the present <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> crisis could further impact <keyword id="810071" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="child-nutrition">child nutrition</keyword> and service delivery across the country that is in the grip of a ferocious second wave, said the UN Children's Fund <keyword id="56000" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UNICEF">UNICEF</keyword>. "With 27 million births and 30 million pregnancies every year, life-saving services to help women give birth are critical in India," said Yasmin Ali Haque, UNICEF Representative in India, on Friday. "However, as health facilities continue to be overwhelmed treating Covid-19 patients, there are reports of pregnant women struggling to find the required support to give birth." She noted that schools across the country remain closed, and remote learning is also disrupted in several states. "This is tearing 247 million children in elementary and secondary education away from these safe spaces, just when they need them most. In addition, many children do not have access to digital learning. Learning loss will therefore continue for children in India. "We're assisting the government to ensure that critical services for the most vulnerable children continue to function across all states. "UNICEF in India has been on-the-ground working tirelessly since the start of the pandemic." The UN official noted that India is in the grip of a ferocious second wave of Covid-19. "In the last 24 hours (till May 7), India bore the burden of 414,188 new daily cases, which is highest daily case count ever recorded by any country in the history of Covid-19 pandemic -- higher than even the count a day earlier (412,262). There were 3,915 deaths due to Covid-19. "UNICEF is very concerned about this deadly daily surge in new cases. This wave is almost four times the size of the first wave and the virus is spreading much faster. On an average there were more than four new cases every second and more than two deaths every minute in last 24 hours. "With the surge in cases, the virus is also affecting more people across age groups, including children and infants." She said, "What is happening in India should raise alarm bells for all of us. The pandemic is far from over. Covid-19 cases are rising at an alarming rate across South Asia, especially in Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Entire health systems could collapse, leading to more tragic loss of life. "Very low levels of vaccination in most South Asian countries (less than 10 per cent in India, Sri Lanka and Nepal) is adding to concern of the virus spiraling even further. Besides South Asia, we are also seeing alarming situations in other parts of the world. "Along with the increase in COVID-19 cases, the impact on children being affected by the virus has also increased. And of course the impact of the outbreak and public health and social measures on children is likely to be aggravated following the second wave. They are living through a tragedy. "Children are losing parents and caregivers to the virus leaving many of them destitute, without parental care." The UN official said, "While there isn't enough data yet, we can see that illegal adoption pleas have surfaced on social media, making these orphans vulnerable to trafficking and abuse. "UNICEF is calling for greater efforts to safeguard these orphans. We need to promote kinship care, family tracing, enhance functionaries and accelerate the sponsorship of destitute families. "This surge is having dire consequences for children whose access to essential health, social, protection and education services is being constrained. "Children are facing mental health issues and are at greater risk of violence, as lockdowns shut them off from their vital support networks. "They are missing out on life-saving routine immunization, critical care and treatment for pneumonia and other diseases." UNICEF has sent critical lifesaving supplies to support India at this difficult time. For example, 3,000 oxygen concentrators, testing kits and other critical equipment in place. It has sent additional critical lifesaving supplies to India, including two million face shields and 200,000 surgical masks. Additionally, 2,000 more oxygen concentrators will arrive by the second half of May with another 2,650 being procured. "We support the regular monitoring of more than 50,000 <keyword id="8764262" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid">Covid</keyword> vaccination centres across 27 states of India," the UN official said. "Covid has shown more than ever we are living in an interconnected world. India is under threat today. We need solidarity to prevent the situation from getting worse in other countries. We are very thankful for the support and compassion from the international community. We need the compassion and contribution to continue until we see the end of the pandemic," she added.
