Sounds kind of awful. I didn't want to be talking to a little 6-year-old dude, and then suddenly, it's like, 'Right. You hate me. I'm Hook. I'm Hook.'"</p><p>He continued: "So, instead, I just stuck as Hook. And, yeah, a lot of the reactions you see in the film are their reactions to me for the first time, or as the man himself, you know?"</p><p>Law went on to say that he had to bribe the young cast at the end of the movie shoot to show that he is not really mean in real life.</p><p>"They met Jude at the end," <a href="https://www.insider.com/jude-law-jokes-jokes-about-captain-marvel-spoilers-video-2018-11">the "Captain Marvel" star</a> said. "And I did what every adult should do to bribe children. I hired an ice cream van and I drove it on-site and gave out ice cream. 'Peter Pan & Wendy' star Jude Law stayed in character as Hook all the way through filming to appear 'scary and mean' to the child actors: 'The reactions you see in the film' are real

And then she mellowed out when we came back to America," said Barrymore, who recalled being "mortified" at the time. The Muppets learn how to stand up against unfair treatment based on skin — or fur — color. </p><p>The Muppet cast is joined by human "Sesame Street" actors alongside celebrity and musical guests "Black-ish" actor Yara Shahidi, "Hamilton" actor Christopher Jackson, and "Rise Up" singer Andra Day.</p><p>The special includes two new songs: "How Do You Know?" and "Listen, Act, Unite!" — the latter is written and performed by Jackson and features Day.</p><p>A representative for Sesame Workshop said in a press release that the special aims to educate children and families on racism, which it says is an important topic to discuss right now.</p><p>"'Sesame Street' has the ability to entertain children while explaining complex issues like no other program and equips families and caregivers with the support they need to have empathetic conversations," the representative said.</p><p>"We believe that this moment calls for a direct discussion about racism to help children grasp the issues and teach them that they are never too young to be 'upstanders' for themselves, one another, and their communities." </p><div type="image" title="&quot;Sesame Street&quot; first aired in 1969." height="3351" width="4470" msid="78598784" hostid="261"></div><p>Sesame Workshop created <a href="https://www.sesameworkshop.org/what-we-do/racial-justice/watch-and-play-together">online resources</a> to go along with "The Power of We" including a discussion guide on how to talk about racism. </p><p>The special comes after "Sesame Street" <a href="https://www.insider.com/sesame-street-townhall-teach-children-stand-up-to-racism-2020-6">co-hosted a televised town hall</a> with CNN in June called "Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism. A CNN/Sesame Street Town Hall for <keyword id="1862" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="kids">Kids</keyword> and Families."</p><p>"Sesame Street," which first aired on November 10, 1969, has a <a href="https://www.insider.com/sesame-street-controversial-moments-history-2019-11">controversial past</a> and history of tackling complex issues.</p><p>The show's first Black Muppet Roosevelt Franklin was <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/meet-muppets-evicted-sesame-street-1182864">removed from the show</a> in 1975 after viewers complained that he perpetuated negative stereotypes about Black children.</p><p>In 1982, when well-known "Sesame Street" actor Will Lee died of a heart attack, the show wrote his death into an episode called "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxlj4Tk83xQ">Farewell Mr. Hooper.</a>"</p><p>In 2002, the show introduced its <a href="https://www.unaids.org/en/resources/presscentre/featurestories/2009/december/20091217safricasesamstreet">first-ever HIV-positive Muppet</a> named Kami. The 5-year-old Muppet appeared on the South African version of "Sesame Street," "Takalani Sesame," and was created to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in South Africa.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/sesame-street-opioid-addiction-Muppet-reactions-2019-10">In 2019</a>, the show introduced a Muppet named Karli whose mother had to "go away for a while" to deal with an opioid addiction. 'Sesame Street' will air an anti-racism segment for kids and families

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="46161" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Disney">Disney</keyword> added a new advisory message that plays before six <keyword id="406" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Movies">movies</keyword> on its <keyword id="7448675" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="disney-plus">Disney Plus</keyword> <keyword id="572624" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Streaming">streaming</keyword> platform.</li><li>The message warns that the movies contain racial stereotypes that "were wrong then and are wrong now," and that the content perpetuates "negative depictions" of people and cultures.</li><li>Movies that will display the advisory include "Peter Pan," "The Aristocats," "The Jungle Book," "Lady and the Tramp," "Dumbo," and "Swiss Family Robinson." </li><li>The change is part of Disney's "Stories Matter" initiative, which is meant to improve how the company's stories represent all people and communities.</li></ul><p>The Walt Disney Company has faced backlash in recent years for <a href="https://www.insider.com/moments-themes-in-disney-movies-that-havent-aged-well-problematic">scenes in some of its movies that haven't aged well</a>.</p><p>As part of its <a href="https://storiesmatter.thewaltdisneycompany.com/">"Stories Matter" initiative</a>, Disney recently announced that it added a new advisory to some of its films that are available on the Disney Plus streaming platform.</p><p>The advisory message informs viewers that the movie they're about to watch contains racial stereotypes that "were wrong then and are wrong now," and that the content contains scenes that perpetuate "negative depictions" of people and cultures.</p><p>Some Twitter users have shared pictures of the advisory message that shows up on the Disney Plus interface. </p><p>Disney identified six movies available on Disney Plus that are labeled with the new advisory — including "Peter Pan," "The Aristocats," "The Jungle Book," "Lady and the Tramp," "Dumbo," and "Swiss Family Robinson." </p><p>The "Stories Matter" site also explains why those particular movies will feature the new warning by pinpointing the racist caricatures and stereotypes present in some of the films' scenes. </p><div type="image" title="peter pan disney" height="729" width="973" msid="78726232" hostid="261"></div><p>For example, referencing a scene from the 1953 animated movie "Peter Pan," Disney's website states: "The film portrays Native people in a stereotypical manner that reflects neither the diversity of Native peoples nor their authentic cultural traditions."</p><p>"It shows them speaking in an unintelligible language and repeatedly refers to them as 'redskins,' an offensive term. Peter and the Lost Boys engage in dancing, wearing headdresses and other exaggerated tropes, a form of mockery and appropriation of Native peoples' culture and imagery," the site continues.</p><p>In another example, Disney points to a scene from "Dumbo," where a group of crows has a musical number that references Jim Crow laws and perpetuates anti-Black stereotypes.</p><div type="image" title="dumbo crows" height="679" width="907" msid="78726234" hostid="261"></div><p>"The crows and musical number pay homage to racist minstrel shows, where white performers with blackened faces and tattered clothing imitated and ridiculed enslaved Africans on Southern plantations," Disney's website reads.</p><p>The "Stories Matter" explanation continues: "The leader of the group in Dumbo is Jim Crow, which shares the name of laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States. In 'The Song of the Roustabouts,' faceless Black workers toil away to offensive lyrics like 'When we get our pay, we throw our money all away.'"</p><p>In November 2019, <a href="https://variety.com/2019/film/news/disney-plus-outdated-cultural-depictions-dumbo-1203403518/">Disney added a shorter content warning to some of its movies created in the 1940s and '50s, including "Dumbo."</a> The original advisory message read: "This program is presented as originally created. What you need to know in advertising today

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hearst</span></p><p class="caption">Adam Harris, the vice president of data products at Hearst Magazines Digital <keyword id="6354777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="media">Media</keyword>.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Hearst believes it can legitimately challenge Facebook and Google by thinking like Amazon.</strong></li><li><strong>The company says it is uniquely positioned to help marketers get people to make purchases.</strong></li><li><strong>The magazine giant is talking to a slew of advertisers this month touting new shopping ad products and data on 120 million consumers.</strong></li></ul><p>Hearst Magazines is taking the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-google-facebook-show-power-of-ad-duopoly-as-rivals-stumble-2017-7">duopoly</a> head on.</p><p>In fact, the <a href="https://www.hearst.com/magazines">venerable media company</a>, which publishes magazines like Cosmopolitan and Elle, says it not only has more powerful <keyword id="35666" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> data than Facebook in some cases but can also be mentioned in the same breath as the ongoing obsession for everyone in media and advertising: Amazon.</p><p>Specifically, Hearst says it has amassed unique profiles on 120 million digital consumers over the past year. And it's touting this pool of data, which the company says is rich with information on how people shop, along with a slew of new shopping-oriented ad products, in meetings planned with 30 or so agencies and marketers over the next few weeks, the company told Business Insider.</p><p>The message is simple: We are uniquely positioned to help marketers sell products.</p><p>Spearheading the effort is Troy Young, the global president of Hearst Magazines Digital Media, along with Adam Harris, the vice president of data products at Hearst Digital Media, who joined the company from Mashable in May.</p><p>"This is the Amazonification of media," Young said.</p><p>Harris, who has logged stints at ad-tech firms like Collective and PointRoll, said that while Facebook excelled at targeting people using basic demographic information like age and gender, "we know more about people's shopping habits than Facebook."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hearst</span></p><p class="caption">Hearst thinks its readers are ready to shop.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>We've always helped people buy stuff</h2><p>That's bold talk for a company thought of by some as a print dinosaur, given Facebook and Google's dominance - the two companies by some estimates <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/30c81d12-08c8-11e7-97d1-5e720a26771b">devour upward of 75% of every new dollar spent</a> on digital advertising.</p><p>In fact, it's the data aspect of this claim that might get you laughed out of some conference rooms on Madison Avenue, as those two tech giants are seen as winning again and again because they have more data on real people than anybody else - and as a result are the best in the business at helping marketers get people to make purchases.</p><p>But Young argues that magazines like Redbook, Good Housekeeping, and Esquire have long been in the business of telling people what to buy. And more recently, rather than shying away from that fact in its sales strategy for fear of casting doubt on its editorial integrity, Hearst is embracing it.</p><p>A few years ago Hearst even introduced a standalone commerce-oriented site called <a href="https://digiday.com/media/hearst-experimenting-commerce-content/">Best Products</a>. He said when the company started talking about producing content for paying advertisers a few years ago, his public-relations team would warn him never to suggest that editors worked on content for marketers.</p><p>Now things have changed, he said, as the company hires more versatile digital-content producers. "They all want to know how much stuff their work is selling," he said.</p><p>OK, but surely magazine brands don't have the kind of data to prove the efficacy of this content and advertising the same way Facebook and Google can, right?</p><h2>Our data is better than you think</h2><p>Well, not in the same way that people build profiles using their real names, Harris acknowledged. But Hearst's magazines do have a solid number of email addresses from various subscription lists as well as billing info from print subscribers and a growing number of anonymous mobile-device identifiers, he said.</p><p>To help tie all this together, the company has invested in data science and ad technology, Harris said. Plus, over the past year, Hearst's various publications have pushed out editorial content designed to both entertain and furnish these profiles with more shopping info.</p><p>Think <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/quizzes#.ip8m6K3LG">BuzzFeed quizzes</a> centered on sussing out people's shopping inclinations. For example, Cosmo asks "When I need <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> therapy, I'm most likely to buy" followed by various shoe-style choices.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hearst</span></p><p class="caption">Hearst uses fun interactive content to gather data on consumers.</p></div><p></p></div></div>"We needed to be smarter," Harris said. "We're building a database of human connections that we can exploit."</p><p>Plus, Hearst now has seven brands on Snapchat Discover, where people interact with content frequently. Young pointed to a recent poll on Seventeen's Discover channel asking "<a href="http://www.seventeen.com/life/a27471/ideal-celeb-roommate/">Which Celeb Would You Want to be Your College Roommate?</a>" (Zendaya, Dove Cameron, Yara Shahidi, Kylie Jenner).</p><p>Young said that a million people responded in an hour and that more people would see that content than read some of Seventeen magazine in a month. "That's real data!" he said.</p><p>Of course, knowing that some people like <a href="https://zendaya.com/">Zendaya</a> over Kylie Jenner won't tell Hearst which shoes they'll buy. But it can convey something about their style or perhaps their age. That can be appended to other information Hearst has on its consumers.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hearst</span></p><p class="caption">Hearst learns about its readers on Snapchat.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Marketing traditions upended</h2><p>Young believes that the traditional patterns people go through when learning about brands and making decisions on which to buy have collapsed, given the emergence of Amazon, Fresh Direct, and other direct-to-consumer shopping services.</p><p>"The funnel is dead," he said. He's referring to the traditional marketing treatise that people are made aware of ad products with brand advertising (the top of the funnel) then are further convinced with other ads later on - moving them down the funnel, metaphorically speaking, before getting them to pull the trigger on a purchase when ready.</p><p>Facebook, Google, and Amazon are thought to excel at the bottom of the funnel. And that's where Hearst wants to make inroads.</p><p>"I'm not even sure young people care about certain brands that much anymore," Young said. "We know who people are and what you can sell to them. We want to help marketers figure out what is going on."</p><p>Hearst will surely face some skepticism. Even if magazines like Cosmo are known for their influence, people don't typically buy things on those sites. They'll have to prove they can pull all this together from both execution and tracking perspectives.</p><p>"The traditional publishers have a good story around knowing their customers and content," one ad buyer said. "It's how their business was built. Their ability to translate that to a digital offering has been slow."</p><p>"I don't think the concept is crazy per se," this buyer said. "The question is how much scale they have, which can be a challenge when it comes to data matching. I'm not sure it's big or unique enough."</p><p>Still, there's surely an appetite among ad buyers to do something other than spend more on Facebook and Google. That's what Hearst is looking to tap into.</p><p>"There are areas we believe we have more leverage," said Young, who wants Hearst's new data/tech business to be viewed as a platform - like Facebook's and Google's - that can be used to launch new brands. "We need to capture the value of the whole thing, the whole funnel.
