Still, there is no guarantee an agreement will be reached, and talks previously froze before a recent restart, sources told The Journal.</p><p>Xilinx closed Thursday with a market cap of nearly $26 billion, making the proposed deal an enticing proposal for its shareholders. The early Friday rally placed shares at their highest point since July 2019.</p><p>AMD shares sank as much as 3.5%. Xilinx soars 17% on report rival AMD is in talks to buy it for $30 billion

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Spencer Platt / Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Goldman Sachs has formulated a strategy for earnings season that has provided outsized returns for the past two decades.</strong></li><li><strong>It involves the purchase of options straddles that are cheap relative to history, and capture a company's earnings period.</strong></li><li><strong>The firm provides a list of 20 well-positioned companies, including Netflix, Microsoft, Procter &amp; Gamble and Wells Fargo.</strong></li></ul><p><br /><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/earnings-season" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Earnings season</a> is upon us, and if Wall Street forecasts are to be believed, it should be a joyous occasion for stock investors.</p><p>But if you really want to crush it, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/goldman-sachs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Goldman Sachs</a> has a strategy for you - one that's been a true money-maker for more than two decades.</p><p>It centers around buying <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/options" target="_blank" rel="noopener">options</a> straddles, which involves the purchase of both call and put contracts. If a company's stock price moves up dramatically, a trader can use the call option to buy shares at a big discount, while if the price drops far enough, the put option will instead turn a profit.</p><p>And that's just part of it. Goldman isn't recommending any old straddles - it's only interested in those that both capture an earnings period, and are also cheap relative to past moves.</p><p>The strategy goes as follows: if the closest listed at-the-money straddle for a stock is less expensive than it has been historically, buying it five days before earnings and closing it the day after has produced an average return on premium of 24%. That dwarfs the 2% return for the entire universe of stocks.</p><p>As the chart below shows, the price of cheap straddles is even lower than usual heading into this earnings season:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Goldman Sachs</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>With that established, Goldman has gone a step further and identified 20 stocks whose straddles are attractively priced for their upcoming earnings reports. Here are two specific options trades Goldman recommends, followed by a list of the other 18 companies:</p><p><strong>1) Buy IBM (<a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/IBM-Quote">IBM</a>) January $165 straddles</strong> - It captures the company's upcoming earnings report and an additional six trading days, but costs 20 basis points less than the amount the stock has moved over the past eight quarters.</p><p><strong>2) Buy Microsoft (<a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/stock/MSFT-Quote">MSFT</a>) weekly $88 straddles expiring on February 2 </strong>- This allows an investor to position for a possible spike in earnings volatility expectations. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP Photo/Dmitry Lovetsky</span></p><p class="caption">Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei in 2012.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>The Trump administration on Wednesday <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-china-huaweitech/chinas-huawei-70-affiliates-placed-on-u-s-trade-blacklist-idUSKCN1SL2W4">banned</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/huawei-responds-trump-china-tech-national-emergency-ban-2019-5">Huawei</a> from buying parts from US companies without the government's approval.</strong></li><li><strong>While some experts say the ban could have negative implications for US technology companies, including Apple, one analyst thinks the development may be mere "noise."</strong></li><li><strong><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/aapl-stock">Watch Apple trade live</a>.</strong></li></ul><p>The Trump administration's new ban against the Chinese telecommunications company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/huawei-how-allies-are-reacting-to-us-calls-to-avoid-the-tech-firm-2019-2#canada-2">Huawei</a> could have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ban-on-huawei-could-could-hurt-us-tech-giants-apple-2019-5">dire implications</a> for US technology investors, but one analyst says there's no need to panic just yet.</p><p><span>The US Commerce Department said on Wednesday it added Huawei to its <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-china-huaweitech/chinas-huawei-70-affiliates-placed-on-u-s-trade-blacklist-idUSKCN1SL2W4">"Entity List"</a> that prevents the company from purchasing American parts and components without the government's approval first.</span></p><p>Of course, that could hurt the US suppliers that sell their parts to the telecom giant. The ban could also make international technology companies like <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/aapl-stock">Apple</a> particularly vulnerable to retaliatory measures from China.</p><p><span>"A tit-for-tat fight that could be disastrous for any company that sells a lot of goods into China, especially technology-based goods, if they get banned for any reason as part of a Chinese retaliatory move," analyst Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies Inc. told Business Insider's Benjamin Pimentel <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ban-on-huawei-could-could-hurt-us-tech-giants-apple-2019-5">on Wednesday</a>.</span><span></span></p><p>Still, Apple shareholders shouldn't dump their shares because of the ban, said Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. He sees the announcement as just "noise" for now.</p><div title="Page 1"><p><span>"While we expect a lot more sand to be thrown in the sand box between the Beltway and Shanghai until the G-20 talks in late June around these trade tensions, we caution investors on Apple to not jump to conclusions and instead rationally digest the most likely scenario when analyzing the stock," Ives told clients in a note out Thursday.</span></p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ban-on-huawei-could-could-hurt-us-tech-giants-apple-2019-5">Trump's Huawei ban could spark a tit-for-tat fight with Beijing that puts Apple in the crossfire</a></em></p><p><span>At the same time, Apple was already under pressure from increased trade tensions between the US and China, Ives said. He noted the latter represents a critical "growth linchpin region," and will </span><span>make up  20% of all iPhone upgrades over the next 12 to 18 months.</span></p><p><span>"Based on our analysis the way the tariff situation stands today on some lithium batteries and other input materials the cost of making iPhones currently will go up by roughly 2%-3%," Ives said.</span><span></span></p><p><span>"Taking a step back, we ultimately believe there is a low likelihood that Apple and its iPhones feel the brunt of the tariffs given its strategic importance domestically as well as Cook's ability to navigate these issues in the past with Trump and K Street."</span></p><p><span>China on Monday said it would hike tariffs on $60 billion worth of US goods in a retaliatory measure after the US last week raised tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods.</span></p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/news/stock-market-news-us-stocks-to-tank-on-trump-tariffs-in-china-trade-war-2019-5-1028193784">Stocks plunge after China retaliates with duties on $60 billion of US goods</a></em></p><p><span>That trade spat's slammed the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/news/stock-market-news-us-stocks-to-tank-on-trump-tariffs-in-china-trade-war-2019-5-1028193784">US stock market</a> earlier this week, though the major indices have recouped their losses. Apple fell to a two-month low on Monday, though it's seen a 5%. </span></p><p><span>Despite the volatility, Ives maintains his "outperform" rating and $235 price target - 22% above where shares were trading on Thursday.</span><span></span></p><p><span>Others agree the US's Huawei ban may not stand to impact Apple, but that it could undoubtedly <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/amd-stock-price-nvidia-trump-trade-war-tariff-escalation-major-concern-2019-5-1028171160">hurt chipmakers with significant exposure to China</a>.</span></p><p><span>Christopher Rolland, an analyst at the firm Susquehanna, told Markets Insider in an email that the Trump administration's announcement doesn't mean much for Apple. Trump's Huawei ban may have dire implications for Apple - but investors shouldn't 'jump to conclusions' just yet, analyst says

Dovish tailwinds are propelling the market higher, as BoE's chief economist (usually hawkish) said overnight - "interest rates could stay low for longer," reinforcing dovish momentum from Fed's Bullard comments yesterday.   US Futures are up ~1%, led by a 1.4% pop in Nasdaq, despite weaker results from GOOG and AMD weighing.  Most of the upside coming from AAPL and Biotechs, along with Semis like QLGC and XLNX.    EU markets are responding well in heavy volume, with the DAX up 1% but off the best levels of the morning.   The FTSE is lagging a bit as Industrials under some pressure there, but GE's earnings may provide tailwinds for US counterparts today. PIIGS yields have all reversed lower, led by a 75bp reversal in Greek paper, helping the EU fins leap almost 3%.   The DXY is slightly weaker, losing ground against Euro, but gaining on Yen.  The energy complex is acting well, with WTI and Brent up 1.2%+ despite WSJ reporting that Gulf nations including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates plan to oppose any cut to OPEC's oil-production ceiling at next month's meeting.  Despite the global enthusiasm, Industrial metals remain under pressure, while Corn and Soy are acting great this week. Global equities reversed hard around <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_345995863"><span class="aQJ">5am</span></span> when EU inflation (5Y lows) and results from a sloppy Spanish auction were published - Right now US futures are off sharply, NDX losing 1.6% as EBAY and NFLX implode - NDX futures are taking out yesterday's lows, while S&amp;P is testing - Of note, smallcaps are outperforming slightly again.   We've already had 450k S&amp;P futures trading this morning, double yesterday's run rate at this time (and yesterday was a record volume day) - US bank stocks suffered their worst one-day fall in almost two years- a good deal of that pain in the banks as the 3M/5Y yield curve continues to flatten, and it's flattening sharply again this AM.    Over in Europe, the DAX is off 1.8% in double normal volume - so maybe starting to see Euro capitulation taking hold - while PIIGS markets under sharp pressure again, Spain and Italy off 3% - while Greece is slightly outperforming.   Over in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei lost 2.28% as the Yen continues its upward climb, while Shanghai retreated 70bp despite upbeat Chinese bank lending data.   Aussie was the only major global market in the green, propelled by a late day rally in their banks.  <span> <br /></span></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The US 10YY is falling under 2% again, off 13bp as Europeans and Asian grasp for paper, and smaller budget deficits in the US reduce supply at Auctions.     We will look for a turnaround in yields again when European Credit markets close near 12pmET.   HY staged an impressive rally in heavy volume yesterday - HY23 down 50c on the week only.   I hear Mortgage Bonds have been doing very well.    5Y Breakevens took on the infamous "Waterfall Pattern" yesterday, as inflation expectations collapsed - Greece out 1% to bunds.  Another crowded trade getting hit.  The market is hunting out crowded trades and making people PAY - Commodities are under sharp pressure again, with WTI falling 2%+, setting off stops as it breaks $80 to the downside, while Brent falls to another 4Y+ low into contract expiry - .   Industrial metals like Copper are under pressure as well, Copper off 1.5%.  Gold is in the red as well, sparked by profit-taking to meet margin calls elsewhere.    <span> <br /></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Scheduled Catalysts today include Fed's Plosser speaking on the Economic Outlook at <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_345995864"><span class="aQJ">8am</span></span>, Weekly Jobless Claims at <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_345995865"><span class="aQJ">8:30</span></span> - Fed's Lockhart to Speak at 9, Industrial Production at <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_345995866"><span class="aQJ">9:15</span></span> - at 10 we get Philadelphia Fed, NAHB Housing Market Index, and Fed's Kocherlakota speaking on Monetary Policy.  There is a very small POMO scheduled for 11, and Fed's Bullard Speaks on U.S. Demographics at 1.   Notable Earnings today -BAX, BBT, BHI, BX, DAL, DHR, GS, TSM, (pre-market);  AMD, GOOG, QLGC, SLB, SNDK, XLNX (post market).   AAPL is also holding a rollout of its new iPad line today.</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Good Morning!   Yesterday was the 6th consecutive rally in the S&amp;P - The S&amp;P had 4 six-day win streaks in '13.  One week and two weeks later was higher every single time.  The VIX closes close to 13 - we will continue to see pops as people buy "Cheap" protection at the low end of the 12M range - Right now, however, Futures are starting on the back foot as comments from Japan's Kuroda have the ¥ jumping.  The DAX is off 30bp, but volumes remain very light (20% lower than average) as much of EU / UK and New England are on School Holidays.   We do have some Ukraine Stress, with Russia's Micex off 60bp (losses since Putin invaded Crimera are at 8%) as the rhetoric sharpens and the Geneva deal unravels.   Over in Asia, the Nikkei did manage a 1% gain - but most focus was on China's PMI coming in light, hitting Hong Kong for 1% and pressing Emerging Markets lower.   Aussie's market reacted to the Aussie $ hit sharply on a low inflation print - gaining 70bp, but Miners were the laggers again.   Focus in the US on Earnings - as GILD is bid higher pre-market (9% of IBB) - we have BA, BIIB, DAL, DOW, DPS, EMC, GD, NOC, NSC, PG pre-open while AAPL, CTXS, ETFC, FB, LRCX, QCOM, TXN, and XLNX are after the bell.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">US Yields are testing overnight lows, as the 10YY failed to stay upside 200dma yesterday, but remains in 20bp range we have seen for the last 3 months.   We have a record Junk Bond Offering today - so watch how "funding trades" could skew other areas of Credit.  Kuroda saying Japanese inflation above BOJ forecast has the ¥ jumping, and a stronger PMI has the € popping as well.  The falling DXY is a tailwind for commodities, but the Weak China PMI print weighs on Copper - but we do have Gold bouncing from a multi-month low.  WTI is lagging Brent as Russia buoys the European Benchmark - and API data showed a nice build ahead of DOE numbers at 10:30 today.   Catalysts scheduled today includes the AIA's Architecture Billings Index for March - at 9:45 we get Markit US Manufacturing PMI, at 10 we get New Home Sales for March - DOE data is at 10:30, we have a decent size POMO at 11, and 1pm brings the Auction of $35 Bln 5-Year Notes</p>
