<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2020/12/09/china-big-data-program-targets-xinjiangs-muslims">Human Rights Watch obtained</a> a leaked Chinese government list of 2,000 <keyword id="1172982" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Uighur-Muslims">Uighur Muslims</keyword> detained between 2016 and late 2018 in Aksu, Xinjiang.</li><li>Uighurs on that list were detained for reasons including "switching off their phone repeatedly," "generally acting suspiciously," and being "born after the 1980s," Human Rights Watch said.</li><li>The Aksu used data from the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-ijop-works-china-surveillance-app-for-muslim-uighurs-2019-5">Integrated Joint Operations Platform</a>, <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>'s mass surveillance system that builds profiles of all Xinjiang residents.</li><li>Since 2016, China has detained at least one million Uighurs in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-kept-building-uighur-internment-camps-despite-release-claims-report-2020-9">hundreds of prison camps</a>, which the country euphemistically calls "reeducation centers."</li></ul>China is detaining its Uighur Muslim citizens for reasons including being younger than 40 years old or appearing untrustworthy, leaked documents show.On Wednesday, <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2020/12/09/china-big-data-program-targets-xinjiangs-muslims">Human Rights Watch published</a> details of a dataset showing the reasons why approximately 2,000 people were detained in Aksu prefecture, Xinjiang, between mid-2016 and late 2018.Human Rights Watch said that the list appears to come from a part of Aksu that is mostly Uighur, and the group said it is confident that all the people on the list are Uighurs.Justifications used by officials on the Aksu list to detain the Uighurs included "switching off their phone repeatedly," "generally acting suspiciously," and being "born after the 1980s."One person on the list, identified as Ms. T, was detained for "links to sensitive countries" after she received four calls from a foreign number in March 2017, Human Rights Watch said.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-gives-these-excuses-to-imprison-uighur-ethnic-minority-2018-9">Officials in Xinjiang have previously used obscure and ridiculous justifications</a> to detain and imprison Uighurs, including setting clocks to a different time zone than Beijing's, which China deems an act of rebellion.The Aksu list, which was passed to Human Rights Watch by Radio Free Asia's Uyghur Service in August 2020, "provides further insights into how China's brutal repression of Xinjiang's Turkic Muslims is being turbocharged by technology," said Maya Wang, senior China researcher at Human Rights Watch."The Chinese government owes answers to the families of those on the list: why were they detained, and where are they now?"<div type="image" title="uighur muslims xinjian detainment camp" height="1000" width="2000" msid="79644042" hostid="261"></div>The people on the list comprise a small segment of some millions of Uighurs who have been detained in prison-like camps since 2016.China euphemistically calls the camps "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-calls-xinjiang-uighur-detention-camps-free-vocational-training-2018-10">reeducation centers</a>," and last year claimed without evidence that it had released all "graduates." But according to <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/meghara/inside-xinjiang-detention-camp">multiple</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-kept-building-uighur-internment-camps-despite-release-claims-report-2020-9">reports</a>, China has continued building and expanding those facilities since that claim.Beijing deems the mostly-Muslim Uighur community <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-uighur-detention-camps-cleanse-religion-leaked-documents-nyt-2019-11">a terror threat akin to ISIS</a>, and has worked <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uighur-muslims-made-redecorate-homes-look-more-chinese-report-2020-1">to erase their culture</a> and slash their birth rate <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-xinjiang-hospitals-abort-uighur-pregnancies-killed-newborns-report-2020-8">with forced sterilizations</a>, child quotas, and forced abortions.Xinjiang officials have also collected granular details about Uighurs in a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-ijop-works-china-surveillance-app-for-muslim-uighurs-2019-5">mass data-collection effort called the Integrated Joint Operations Platform</a> (IJOP) since August 2016. The system has information including security and facial-recognition footage, license plate numbers, personal internet history, location, and other personal details.The program collects data on all Xinjiang residents, including non-Uighurs, but Human Rights Watch said that officials used IJOP to flag the 2,000 detainees on the Aksu list.<div type="image" title="KASHGAR, CHINA - JUNE 30, 2020. (Photo by David Liu/Getty Images)" height="3000" width="6000" msid="79644048" hostid="261"></div>According to multiple reports, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/01/china-transferred-detained-uighurs-to-factories-used-by-global-brands-report">some Uighurs detained in Xinjiang have been forced to work for little to no pay</a> in factories and production lines, some of which produce goods for major Western retailers.The US Congress recently voted to pass the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which would see companies banned from using factories showing evidence of forced Uighur labor.Nike, Coca-Cola, and Apple <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/human-rights-groups-battle-against-firms-on-xinjiang-forced-labor-2020-1">reportedly lobbied against the bill</a>, which will now be voted on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/human-rights-groups-battle-against-firms-on-xinjiang-forced-labor-2020-12">by the US Senate.</a>In September, the US government also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-bans-imports-from-xinjiang-in-china-human-rights-abuses-2020-9">banned the import</a> of some clothing, computer, and hair products from Xinjiang.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>People are furious with <keyword id="46161" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Disney">Disney</keyword>'s newly released "<keyword id="3026859" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mulan">Mulan</keyword>" movie, and have called for a boycott of it.</li><li>The movie's credits thank government agencies in <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>'s Xinjang region, where millions of Muslims have been detained, surveilled, and subjected to human-rights abuses for years.</li><li>Reports and watchdogs say people in the region — many of whom are known as Uighurs — are sterilized, made to work for little to no pay, and forced to adopt Chinese culture and deny their own.</li><li>There were already calls to boycott the movie over its star's public support of the Hong Kong police during pro-democracy protests last year.</li><li>Disney has not commented on the backlash.</li></ul>Disney is facing backlash for filming its new "Mulan" remake in China's <keyword id="46500" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Xinjiang">Xinjiang</keyword> region, where authorities have built a 21st-century police state to surveil and detain millions of Muslims.In the movie's final credits, "Mulan" gave "special thanks" to eight government entities in Xinjiang. These included the public security bureau in the city of Turpan, which is <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-54064654">credited with running hundreds of detention camps</a>, and the "publicity department" of the Chinese Communist Party's Xinjiang branch.The credits were noted by social media users, who called for a boycott of the movie.The Xinjiang region is the heartland of the <keyword id="45300" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Uighur">Uighur</keyword> people, a heavily persecuted, mostly-Muslim ethnic group.<h2>'Re-education camps'</h2>The country has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-coronavirus-xinjiang-uighur-squalid-detention-camps-2020-1">detained at least one million Uighurs and other minorities in prison-like camps</a> — which China euphemistically calls "re-education camps" — and has put them <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leaked-documents-how-china-operates-xinjiang-detention-centers-2019-11">under extreme surveillance measures</a>.Journalists and activists have also accused China of using Uighurs for what amounts to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-ppe-exports-uighur-labor-nyt-2020-7?r=US&amp;IR=TIR=T">forced labor, the products of which they say are then used by some of the biggest brands</a> in the US and around the world.Former detainees of the camps have described dire conditions there, as well as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/life-inside-china-internment-camps-for-uighur-minority-in-xinjiang-bbc-report-2018-8">physical and psychological torture</a>. To date, researchers have found <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-uighur-prison-camp-suspected-locations-maps-2019-11?op=1">at least 500 suspected "re-education" camps</a>.And in an a recent <a href="https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/inside-the-sets-mulan-live-action">interview with Architectural Digest, </a>Grant Major, the film's production designer, said his team had spent months in and around Xinjiang.The US put <a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/07/22/2020-15827/addition-of-certain-entities-to-the-entity-list-revision-of-existing-entries-on-the-entity-list">the Turpan Bureau of Public Security on an export-restrictions list</a> in July, describing it as being implicated in "<keyword id="52767" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Human-rights">human rights</keyword> violations and abuses in the implementation of China's campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention, forced labor and high-technology surveillance against" Uighurs and other groups.Disney has neither responded to Business Insider's requests for comment on the backlash, nor issued any public statement about it.<h2>Forced sterilizations, organ-harvesting, cut contacts</h2>Outside the camps, China is also accused of <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/china-is-forcibly-sterilizing-uighur-women-and-giving-them-unwanted-abortions-in-a-mission-to-purge-the-muslim-minority-report-says/ar-BB166lWE">forcibly sterilizing Uighur women</a> and performing abortions on them. (Uyghur is an alternative spelling for "Uighur.""It casts more doubts on whether Mulan is the propaganda masterpiece that Disney works hand in hand with the CCP government to whitewash the cultural genocide and human violations on ethnic minorities in the region."Hollywood studios have in recent years grown heavily reliant on overseas box offices for revenue, with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-movie-censorship-gives-hollywood-advantage-2019-9">China being the most important market</a>.
