AMD traded as high as $49.25 before falling slightly.</p><p>The Thursday surge follows a winning year for AMD, as the company ended 2019 as <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/best-performing-sp-500-stocks-2019-amd-target-highest-gains-2019-12-1028786555#1-advanced-micro-devices11">the best-performing stock in the S&amp;P 500</a>. The company soared nearly 150% during the year.</p><p>The chipmaker also helped boost the index's information technology sector to its best yearly gain in a decade. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/aapl-stock">Apple</a> led the gain, jumping roughly 88% on the success of its iPhone 11 and growing wearables business. The sector was <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tech-sector-apple-amd-drive-best-yearly-performance-decade-semiconductors-2019-12-1028786391">the best performing in the S&amp;P 500</a> and ended the year up nearly 50%.</p><p>Analysts are already eyeing AMD as the best-positioned semiconductor stock of the new year. Rosenblatt Securities analyst Hans Mosesmann deemed it his top pick in a Tuesday note, citing the "secular importance" of its popularity in both CPU and GPU markets.</p><p>The company is also positioned to benefit from next-generation gaming consoles, its multi-year CPU cycle, and the inability for rivals <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/intc-stock">Intel</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/nvda-stock">Nvidia</a> to copy many of its winning products, Mosesmann wrote.</p><p>Rosenblatt listed <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/mu-stock">Micron</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/xlnx-stock">Xilinx</a> as its second and third picks, respectively.</p><p>The analyst firm reiterated its "buy" rating for the chipmaker and boosted its price target for the stock to $65 from $52. Now, almost ten years later, that contested asset could make IPO history. </li></ul><p><strong>AMD announced a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amd-buys-xilinx-chipmaker-chip-semiconductor-35-billion-intel-2020-10">$35 billion all-stock deal to acquire Xilinx</a></strong>, a maker of programmable chips.  It's the second-largest semiconductor deal in history, behind <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-arm-softbank-acquisition-price-2020-9">Nvidia's planned $40 billion acquisition of ARM</a> that was announced in September. </p><ul><li><strong>Timing wise, the deal presents an interesting contrast</strong>, coming just a week after Intel announced its plans to divest its NAND memory chip business.</li><li><strong>But don't read Intel's spinoff of NAND chips</strong> — a low margin, commodity business — as a sign of Intel and AMD moving in opposite directions. Intel is betting big on programmable chips too: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-closes-altera-deal-2015-12">It acquired Altera</a>, the other big player in the market, five years ago for less than half the price AMD paid for Xilinx.</li><li><strong>FWIW:</strong> There's one notable player left in the programmable chips business: Lattice Semiconductor, a much smaller company that reported better-than-expected Q3 results on Tuesday. </li></ul><p><strong><div type="image" title="Lisa Su, president and CEO of AMD, gives a keynote address during the 2019 CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S., January 9, 2019. REUTERS/Steve Marcus" height="2392" width="3190" msid="78915963" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p><strong>As AMD CEO Lisa Su</strong> told <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/amd-agrees-to-buy-rival-chip-maker-xilinx-for-35-billion-11603794663?mod=hp_lead_pos2">the Wall Street Journal,</a> the acquisition is about size."When you look at where the markets are going in the future, I think scale matters," she said.</p><p>The deal could represent a transformative moment for AMD: After a lifetime of playing the role of a "second source" provider for the Intel x86 microprocessors used by PC makers, AMD now has a chance to level the playing field with its archrival in the critical data center market.</p><p>Of course, at the center of the story is cloud computing, which continues to boom even amid a pandemic. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-earnings-q1-fy21-cloud-teams-xbox-2020-10">Microsoft made that clear in its quarterly earnings this week, </a>reporting that its commercial cloud business grew 31% to $15.2 billion.</p><p><strong>Next up: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-amazon-apple-google-microsoft-twitter-earnings-q3-congress-2020-10">Super Thursday!</a></strong> That's when Apple, <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-amazon-apple-google-microsoft-twitter-earnings-q3-congress-2020-10">Alphabet</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-amazon-apple-google-microsoft-twitter-earnings-q3-congress-2020-10">Facebook</a>, and Twitter will all give their Q3 report cards. We'll be covering all the action on the Business Insider site. </p><h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-plans-to-improve-search-to-become-better-discovery-site-2020-10">Battle of the search boxes</a></h2><p>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/doj-google-antitrust-case-revealed-2020-10">DOJ wants to curtail Google's search dominance</a>, arguing that <keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword>'s deal with Apple (among other things) has unfairly thwarted rival internet search engines like Microsoft's hapless Bing and the ever-plucky DuckDuckGo.</p><p>But there's another search box that's giving Google a run for the money: Amazon's product search. As Eugene Kim reveals in his latest scoop, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-plans-to-improve-search-to-become-better-discovery-site-2020-10">Amazon has big plans for its search bar</a>, where roughly 60% of online shoppers begin their searches. "Instead, this will only serve to limit the US to inferior yet more expensive alternatives, leaving the US lagging behind in 5G deployment, and eventually harming the interests of US companies and consumers."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The company also slammed the US for its "unreasonable restrictions," which it says infringes on Huawei's rights and could lead to serious legal battles down the road.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sources told Bloomberg that Huawei executives believe they are being used as a "bargaining chip" in the ongoing trade war between the US and China. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Earlier this month, top US and Chinese officials met in Washington to negotiate a resolution to the escalating trade war between the two countries. AMD celebrated its 10th anniversary of the AMD plant in the eastern German city of Dresden on Tuesday.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/amd-stock">AMD</a> was soaring Wednesday morning after an analyst initiated coverage and said he sees the chipmaker taking market share in key areas.</strong></li><li><strong>Shares were higher by 8%.</strong></li><li><strong>Watch <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/amd-stock">AMD</a> trade live.</strong></li></ul><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/amd-stock">AMD</a> shares were soaring Wednesday morning, up more than 8%, after analyst said the company has an opportunity to gain share in the<span style="background-color: #ffffff;"> lucrative microprocessor space</span> given its unique position in two key markets. </p><p>Specifically, Nomura Instinet analyst David Wong said the chipmaker can gain ground in both the x86 microprocessor and the standalone graphics-processor markets. Rivals Intel and Nvidia only focus on one of the markets, with Intel on x86 and Nvidia on GPU, he added.</p><p>Wong initiated coverage with a "buy" rating $33 price target - more than 20% higher than Tuesday's close.</p><p>"AMD has managed to lift from its market share lows in all categories of x86 microprocessors and GPUs," Wong wrote. "We think that this share momentum is likely to continue in the future." </p><p>He sees strong growth across a variety of products employing both x86 and GPU microprocessors as customers increasingly adopt electronic devices. Wong also noted that the companies faces near-term headwinds due to smartphone saturation, but that long-term demand remains intact.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nomura</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Wong believes adding market share will lead to strong gains in profitability - despite AMD's patchy earnings history. The company has recorded several quarterly losses over the past few years alongside the volatile chip market.</p><p>"We forecast AMD's reported GAAP EPS will climb through 2019 and rise meaningfully in subsequent years from roughly breakeven in the March 2019 quarter," he wrote. "We believe that at some point in the next few years, AMD will be able to demonstrate EPS power of $2.00 or more."</p><p>Nomura also initiated coverage on Intel with a "buy" citing gains in AI and autonomous driving, while rivals Nvidia and Xilinx were rated as "neutral". </p><p><span data-format="maximumFractionDigits:2" data-animation="" data-jsvalue="20.7500"><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/amd-stock-price-releases-7nm-gaming-gpu-2019-1-1027856561">AMD announced in January strong product upgrades with the launch of Radeon VII</a>, a 7 nanometer GPU.</span><span> The new chip provides twice the memory and significantly higher performance compared to AMD's other graphics cards.</span></p><p><span>In addition, the company scored a huge product win in March when <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/amd-stock-price-ceo-google-stadia-unveiling-hint-about-future-2019-3-1028045987">Google announced it would use AMD chips for Stadia</a>, its new gaming platform. AMD spikes after analyst says it could gain market share in 2 key areas

Yet when Costolo stepped down in June, Twitter had no successor lined up.</p><p class="p1">Instead the company tapped cofounder <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-ceo-dick-costolo-will-step-down-2015-6">Jack Dorsey to serve as interim CEO</a> while it conducted a search for a permanent leader. The board's search committee has now been looking at inside and outside candidates for more than three months, with no indication that a decision is near.</p><p class="p1">Dorsey is considered a frontrunner, but the fact that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jack-dorsey-telling-insiders-will-stay-square-ceo-2015-9">he is also the CEO of digital payment company Square</a>, which is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/square-ipo-in-two-weeks-2015-9">said to be planning an IPO in the coming weeks</a>, has complicated the situation. Meanwhile, the uncertainty has taken a toll on Twitter's shares and on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-morale-problem-2015-8">morale within the company</a>.</p><p class="p1">One reason why investors may be anxious is because <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-share-price-august-3-2015-8">Twitter's stock has taken a beating</a> during its CEO search, down about 30%.</p><p class="p1">That's more the exception than the rule.</p><p class="p1">Only 3 of the 14 companies saw their stock decline during CEO searches. Twitter has now been hunting for a new CEO for more than 100 days - but that isn't unusual

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Viola Group</span></p><p class="caption">Viola Growth partner Natalie Refuah and Dynamic Yield CEO Liad Agmon saw a big exit in March when McDonald's acquired the company for more than $300 million.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>In mid-March, the US chip company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/nvidia">Nvidia</a> announced an eye-popping <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-oracle-inadvertently-helped-nvidia-win-mellanox-away-from-intel-2019-3">$6.9 billion acquisition of Israeli semiconductor company Mellanox</a>, underscoring the buzz around Israeli tech companies.</li><li>Two weeks later a more curious US-Israeli tech deal took place when McDonald's acquired AI company Dynamic Yield for more than $300 million.</li><li>While the highs are getting higher, mid-$100 million exits remain the common exit for Israeli tech startups, according to experts in the space.</li><li>Here's what you need to know about the bustling tech mergers and acquisitions scene in Israel.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Businessinsider.com for more stories.</a></li></ul><p>In late March, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/mcdonalds">McDonald's</a> announced its $300 million-plus acquisition of Dynamic Yield, an Israeli startup that uses algorithms to personalize shopping experiences to the individual. </p><p>The Golden Arches were a surprising new home for the eight-year-old company, which launched as a publisher-focused project at Bessemer Venture Partner's office in Tel Aviv, before picking up speed with retailers like Sephora and Ikea.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mac_desert.JPG">Wikipedia/Gueztoub</a></span></p><p class="caption">McDonald's isn't an obvious tech acquirer, but its recent purchase fit the Israeli exit model to a T.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Fast food chains aren't known for their software-as-a-service offerings, and cheeseburgers aren't even kosher. But at $300 million, Dynamic Yield's sale fit perfectly into the Israeli tech scene's template for a successful outcome.</p><p>"<span style="font-weight: 400;">I call that our bread and butter, in terms of exits," said Adam Fisher, founding partner at Bessemer Israel, which has had 13 exits (acquisitions or other transactions that let VC backers cash in their investments) since launching the firm's Israeli outpost in 2007. "</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Below $100 million, it's hard to make an impact. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Above $500 million - we all aim for that, but it requires a special kind of company."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While founders and investors in Silicon Valley pursue $100 million venture capital rounds at billion-dollar valuations, their peers in Israel - affectionately dubbed the "51st state" - tend to eschew hypergrowth and world-domination for the security of a corporate parent company.</span></p><p>In 2018, there were 61 exits of venture-backed Israeli tech companies, with an average deal size of $81 million, according to consulting firm PwC, which excluded deals valued under $5 million from the study. Fifty-two of those exits were acquisitions, while just nine companies, primarily in biotech, opted to sell shares to the public.</p><p>"When I joined the industry 15 years ago, it was really rare to see a $200 million exit. Nowadays, a $200 million exit is the lower bottom," said Natalie Refuah, an investor with Viola Growth, which led Dynamic Yield's $38 million Series D just months before it got acquired.</p><p>"I do think that this is increasing and probably in the years coming it will be a higher amount," Refuah said. "We are great believers in the billion dollar company."</p><h2>Billion-dollar exits are rare</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Israeli Government Press Office/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">American tech corporations like Google have had a big impact on the Israeli tech ecosystem.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The impact of American corporate M&amp;A on Israel can be charted across the Tel Aviv skyline. Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Google, IBM and Cisco all have large research and development facilities in the city or just outside in Herzliya, an affluent suburb that draws frequent comparison to Silicon Valley's Menlo Park. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/intel">Intel</a>, the chipmaking goliath which opened its first Israeli office in 1974, is the country's largest tech employer. The company's footprint in Israel has increased thanks to a combination of organic growth and acquisitions, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intel-mobileye-acquisition-report-2017-3">its eye-popping 2017 acquisition</a> of autonomous vehicle chip company Mobileye for $15.3 billion.</p><p><span>For Leonard Rosen, CEO of Barclays Israel, it's the big deals that keep things interesting. At the end of February, Rosen and his team closed KLA's $3.4 billion acquisition of the semiconductor company Orobtech, for whom Barclays was the exclusive advisor. </span><span>That deal was delayed</span><span> nearly a year after it was first announced <a href="https://www.calcalistech.com/ctech/articles/0,7340,L-3752777,00.html">due to regulatory holdups in China</a>.</span><span></span><span></span></p><p><span>"A lot of these companies will buy here just so they have a stake to start looking at other companies and earlier stage companies, and keep ahead of the game," said Rosen from his office in Tel Aviv, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-nears-deal-to-acquire-mellanox-technologies-source-2019-3">just hours after news broke</a> about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/nvidia">Nvidia's</a> $6.9 billion acquisition of the publicly-traded chip company Mellanox.</span></p><p><span>It was Nvidia's first big move in the country, and it <a href="https://www.calcalistech.com/ctech/articles/0,7340,L-3759695,00.html">beat out both Intel</a> and Barclay's own <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/11/07/xilinx-working-with-barclays-to-buy-mellanox-possible-december-deal.html">reported client Xilinx</a> in the process.</span></p><p><span>"Competition is really tough in the world, and Israel has an advantage. If you don't have a presence here and your competitor does, you're potentially missing out on technologies that will help you lead," Rosen said.</span></p><h2>Scaling big means leaving Israel<span></span></h2><p>The strong American presence has its pros and cons for the local startup scene. As in Silicon Valley, cohorts of ex-employees tend to leave tech giants where they get their start with a dream to build the next big thing. And more startup exits means more wealthy founders and investors who recirculate that capital into other startups.</p><p>But anecdotally, industry people lament that <a href="https://www.aboutamazon.eu/press-release/amazon-launches-its-new-tel-aviv-office-and-floor28">Amazon's new office in the Sarona Tower</a>, the largest skyscraper in Israel, has driven up wages for talented engineers. </p><p><strong>Read more: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/silicon-valley-bank-survey-half-of-all-startups-expect-to-be-acquired-2019-2">Half of all US startups expect to get acquired, but the number of companies that don't have a plan is growing</a></strong></p><p>And Silicon Valley's appetite for Israeli startups may be nipping growth potential. There were just four acquisitions valued at more than $1 billion in 2018, and all four of those acquisitions were a second-exit for a company that had already gone public or was owned by a strategic acquirer. It's just not very common for an Israeli tech company to get that big.</p><p>Fisher, an early backer in Wix before it had <a href="https://venturebeat.com/2013/11/06/website-builder-wix-raises-127m-in-largest-ever-ipo-for-israeli-firm/">the biggest IPO in Israeli history</a>, thinks founders have good reasons to exit before reaching the acclaimed "unicorn," of $1 billion valuation,  status. While Israel has tons of engineers, most tech companies need to build out sales and marketing teams in the US once they surpass $15 million to $20 million in revenue, he said. Oftentimes, the CEO needs to relocate to California. </p><p>Growing that big takes a lot of work, Fisher said, and a couple hundred million dollars isn't nothing.</p><p>"<span style="font-weight: 400;">As much as capital is flowing into Israel, I think everybody here is cognizant of the fact that that could change over night," Fisher said. "</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">We live in a volatile region of the world, we know that people get skittish all of a sudden. We're highly dependent on foreign capital. And sometimes, a bird in the hand is what you want to go with."</span></p><h2><strong>Talent is key for corporate acquirers</strong></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>JACK GUEZ/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Mellanox CEO Eyal Waldman, center, took his company public before selling to Nvidia for $6.9 billion in March.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>For the corporate acquirers, it's a pretty good setup.</p><p>John Somorjai, executive vice president of corporate development at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/salesforce">Salesforce</a>, said the company has found success building out its research and development operations in Israel. The San Francisco giant has bought four Israeli startups since 2011, including its July 2018 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/salesforce-datorama-acquisition-price-2018-7">acquisition of Datorama for $800 million,</a> one of the biggest deals of the year.</p><p>"What we found is that we're able to hire incredible talent in Israel, and they've made a lot of contributions, specifically to our AI <keyword id="94495" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Innovation">innovation</keyword>," Somorjai said.</p><p>Though Datorama was fairly large, Somorjai said that the sweet spot for most Israeli startups to sell is when they are "sub-scale," before they've built large go-to-market organizations that can tackle global sales. </p><p>Somorjai, who's based in San Francisco, said he travels to Tel Aviv twice a year to meet with employees, founders and venture capitalists, and his team in London makes more frequent trips because of the proximity. Beyond acquisitions, Salesforce has made 12 venture investments in Israeli startups, including Redkix, a small email startup that Facebook bought last summer.</p><h2><span>IPOs are rare</span> but that could change</h2><p><span>Despite the Israeli ecosystem's drive toward exits, the IPO well has been more or less dry over the last few years. </span><span>Just nine Israel tech companies went public in 2018, and of those seven were in the life <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> sector, according to PwC.</span></p><p><span>However, that could all change in the next few months.</span></p><p><span>"In IPO, there's always been heights and downs. And for many years, the IPO was closed for Israeli tech companies," said Refuah. "I hope that it's changing. It looks like there are signs that it's opening but it's yet to be seen."</span></p><p><span>Already, 2019 is starting strong. The cybersecurity company Tufin will kick off the year with an IPO on Thursday, where it will list on the New York Stock Exchange.
