The brand's entry into the tablet space after a long hiatus indicates how lucrative this segment has eventually become. Xiaomi Pad 5, on paper, is a beast of a tablet for its price with high-end specs and a competitive price tag. But is it really? I have spent 10 days with it and I have an answer to that. <br /><br /><strong>Price &amp; Availability<br /></strong>Xiaomi Pad 5 starts at ₹26,999 for the 6GB RAM &amp; 128GB storage capacity variant. There is another variant with 256GB storage capacity and similar RAM available at ₹28,999. You can buy it from Amazon or Mi’s store.<br /><br /><strong>Design - Feels Premium</strong><br />When I held the Xiaomi Pad 5 for the first time, I was really impressed with the premium feel. A design significantly inspired by Apple’s iPad Air, this latest tablet also sports a sleek frame. The materials used are different though. Xiaomi Pad 5 comes with a metal frame that encompasses a glass front and a plastic back. The tablet feels solid, and the weight distribution is favorable. There are other options like Pearl white and Green, but I find this one to go well with the design. <br /><br />Turning the Xiaomi Pad 5 around introduces us to the camera bump, yes it is protruding, but it won’t bother you that much. Especially once you put a case on it. Other design characteristics include volume rockers which are on the top left if you are holding the tablet in landscape mode and on the right-hand side in portrait mode. There is a power lock and unlock button that is on the left side when you hold it in landscape mode and on the top right when you hold it in portrait mode.<br />    <div type="image" title="The Pad 5 is sleek" msid="91647836" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The Pad 5 is sleek&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> <br /><br />The buttons are tactile and feel robust. On the bottom, you will find the USB Type-C charging port next to the speaker grill.<br /><br />The lack of a fingerprint sensor definitely surprised me on the Xiaomi Pad 5. Since it has a respectable size just like the iPad. What does that mean for security? I talk about it in the latter half of the article. <br /><br />Another drawback is the lack of IP rating, which is disappointing. A major use case for a tablet is for people who like to travel and water resistance and durability becomes paramount in such use cases.<br /><br /><strong>Display<br /></strong>Xiaomi Pad 5 features an 11-inch 2.5K Display. It’s an IPS LCD panel with 1600x2560 pixels resolution. Before I get to the display quality, it’s important to highlight the chunky bezels we see around the panel. These bezels are thick and shiny and it might take some time for you to adjust to them. It’s vibrant, well lit, and produces natural colors while retaining details. I do wish that the black levels were a bit better especially around the corners, but this is expected with an LCD. <br /><br />Like most other LCD panels, apps like Youtube let us set up a video to 4K, which is not true. That being said it’s fun to consume content on the Xiaomi Pad 5 with respect to the screen. Dolby Atmos support also adds a zing to watching movies from different OTT apps. I watched Batman V Superman (2016) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. <br /><br />The display also supports a max refresh rate of 120Hz. It is as fluid as one expects it to be, and the screen becomes a breeze to work around with. Xiaomi does not provide an adaptive refresh rate feature on the Xiaomi Pad 5, this to me is a missed opportunity. I might be knit-picking here but I feel it could have worked wonders on a tablet of this capacity. Yes, 120Hz is great, but an adaptive refresh rate means the screen could switch refresh rates according to the content on display.<br />    <div type="image" title="The bezels around the display are chunky" msid="91647854" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;The bezels around the display are chunky&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br /><br />Unfortunately, Xiaomi fails to provide an efficient set-up on this tablet to compliment the screen. The quad speaker setup might sound hefty on paper but it is a disappointment in day to day usage. The main issue is the level of loudness as the volume gets damped in some situations - like when there’s a full-speed fan running in the same room.<br /><br />When I was watching something by myself I was mostly dependent on my TWS buds, and when it came to watching with others I connected a Bluetooth speaker. <br /><br /><strong>Stylus and Keyboard cover <br /></strong><br />It is with the display that we also get introduced to the first accessory, Xiaomi Smart Pen.<br />It’s sleek, and you can maintain a firm grip on it. There are buttons mounted on it, which have dedicated shortcuts on them. But does it do its job well? Yes, it does. As expected it makes your life easier when it comes to interacting with the display. I mostly used it to make notes, change volume levels, and do a bit of photo editing. Graphic intensive tasks usually require long-term interactions with the display, in this case, the pen starts to struggle. Like missing out on long strokes. The battery life of the stylus is favorable and at 100% capacity, it can last upto 3 days. Fortunately, it can be connected magnetically to the pad itself which also charges it. So, chances are most of the time the stylus will be sufficiently charged.<br /><br />Overall, if you chose to go for Pad 5 then, I would suggest spending another ₹4,999 for the stylus as well. <br /><br />Now that the stylus has been covered it's important to talk about the keyboard cover as well. Made of Good quality leather, the case, just like the device, also feels premium. It snaps right up on the Xiaomi Pad 5 and is easy to take off as well. However, I was struggling a bit when connecting the keyboard section. The magnetic strength hinders the smooth transition we get to see on a device like Samsung Galaxy Tab S8. I had to take out the tablet and attach it dedicatedly with precision quite often in order to use it properly. <br /><br />This gets tiring after a while. I hope Xiaomi fixes this design in the next iteration of the case. The real-time experience of using the keyboard is satisfactory. The keys are tactile and it’s fun typing on them. The keyboard despite being small has a respectable travel distance of 1.2mm. For that matter, this review is written on the Xiaomi Pad 5. Yes, you can’t switch between windows and tabs from the keyboard itself, but then Xiaomi isn’t pitching it like one. This is not meant to replace your laptop, instead, it provides you easy access to general online computing. And, it does manage to succeed in this endeavour. In case you want to occasionally use it like a laptop you can connect a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard with it. This is a more affordable alternative for casual users. <br /><br /><strong>User Experience</strong><br />Xiaomi Pad 5 runs on Android 11 out of the box and pairs up with the Mi UI 12.5 skin. This particular Xiaomi skin has been updated and customized for tablet orientation. For starters, you won’t find an app drawer by default on the device, instead, the apps remain on the home screen. I could set reminders, and even reply to emails from the home screen itself, this was very handy. Of course, there is a split-screen function on board as well. Xiaomi is usually good at executing this, so no wonder it works smoothly on the Xiaomi Pad 5. You can open up to two windows simultaneously which is what a general user would incline towards. But with ample real estate, I feel one could use 3 apps as well. Maybe Xiaomi should consider it with a future update. <br /><br />Just like the iPad, we get to see an app tray on the bottom of the screen as well, which pops up when we swipe upwards from the bottom half. There were times when I was trying to navigate back to the home screen but instead the app tray would pop out. If you want to solve this issue altogether, turn off gestures and use navigation buttons instead.<br /><br />As mentioned previously in this review, Xiaomi Pad 5 does not come with a fingerprint reader, instead, it has a face unlock. Unlike the more fancy IR blasters that we see on other devices, this one works with the front camera. And as it is with generic face unlocking, the problems are similar here. In low lighting conditions or while wearing a mask, the Xiaomi Pad 5 struggles to unlock. For the most part, I had to punch in my numeric pin to get inside. <br /><br /><strong>Xiaomi Pad 5 Performance</strong><br />Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor turns out to be the right chipset for this device. Delivering a fiery performance the SoC works in sync with the OS on board. The Xiaomi Pad 5 boots up without any lag, and you can begin to interact with the device right off the bat.<br /><br />The 6GB RAM onboard is more than sufficient for genric tasks like web browsing or social media. Additionally, it holds up well against heavy tasks too. To test the gaming performance, I played BGMI on the Xiaomi Pad 5 and the performance was satisfactory. There were no frame drops and the game ran smoothly on UHD settings. Yes, the tablet did a bit warm but not unbearably hot. I edited pictures on Adobe Lightroom, and the performance was commendable there as well. <br /><br />The 128GB internal storage variant might be sufficient for most users, however, I would suggest going for the 256GB variant. Since a tablet is used for long and it is your local device for storing media and important documents. In this case, it’s even more important since you do not get a microSD card slot to expand the storage capacity. Something I believe should have been there. <br /><br />But it’s not just the microSD card slot that’s missing. There is also no SIM-card slot on board. It’s a general fact that people don’t make phone calls from their tablets. While it’s true having a SIM card has more than just one application. Primarily a SIM card gives you access to the cellular internet on the go. Xiaomi has managed to clip the wings on the Pad 5 with this move in my opinion. A powerful device of this nature is shackled by the sheer absence of the internet when on the move. I can still connect it with my mobile hotspot or ask for WiFi passwords when I move around. This is a major flaw in my opinion. <br /><br />Xiaomi Pad 5 comes with an 8720 mAh battery. A respectable size for the tablet, it was difficult to kill it. On light days, the Xiaomi Pad 5 would give a mileage of upto 2 days. Of course, the battery dipped to a day if I binge-watched 3 feature films in a single sitting. Do note that the battery performance depends majorly on your usage patterns. Xiaomi Pad 5 supports 22.5W fast charging which takes about 2 hours to charge it completely.<br /><br /><strong>Camera Performance</strong><br />The camera on a tablet has 2 important use cases, video calls, and scanning documents. The Xiaomi Pad 5 is an overachiever in these 2 fields. The main camera is a 13MP shooter, which clicks decent images. Xiaomi is well aware of the first use case I mentioned - scanning documents that’s why we also see a document mode in the camera app. A small add-on with a big real-time impact. I did not have to download third-party apps to scan documents on this one since I could do it from the native camera app. Otherwise, the pictures were soft and undersaturated in most cases.<br />    <div type="image" title="Pad 5 has a dedicated document mode" msid="91648068" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Pad 5 has a dedicated document mode&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br /><br />The main camera can also record 4K videos at 30fps, however, the results are underwhelming, and I doubt users will ever turn to that. <br /><br />The lens module on the back gives an impression that there is a multi-camera set-up, however, the other lens just reads 13MP. That’s a sign of a re-used camera module from some other Xiaomi device. This is a bit miss leading so be careful. <br /><br />The front camera is an 8MP shooter and is good for video calls. Taking selfies for your social media feed should remain your smartphone's job. AI chatbot <keyword id="15681942" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ChatGPT" source="Orion">ChatGPT</keyword> has reached 100 million weekly active users, <keyword id="3169059" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="openai" source="Orion">OpenAI</keyword> CEO Sam Altman has announced, as he released new <keyword id="19409304" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GPT-4-Turbo" source="Orion">GPT-4 Turbo</keyword> model that is more capable, cheaper and supports a 128K context window.<br /><br />Addressing the company's first developer conference here late on Monday, he said that the service, released nearly a year ago, garnered an estimated 100 million monthly users within just two months of launching.<br /><br />Over two million developers use the platform, including more than 92 per cent of Fortune 500 companies, he told the developers.<br /><br />GPT-4 Turbo has a 128k context window so it can fit the equivalent of more than 300 pages of text in a single prompt.<br /><br />"We also optimised its performance so we are able to offer GPT-4 Turbo at a 3x cheaper price for input tokens and a 2x cheaper price for output tokens compared to GPT-4," said the company.<br /><br />In addition to GPT-4 Turbo, the company is also releasing a new version of GPT-3.5 Turbo that supports a 16K context window by default.<br /><br />OpenAI also released Assistants API to help developers build agent-like experiences within their own applications.<br /><br />"An assistant is a purpose-built AI that has specific instructions, leverages extra knowledge, and can call models and tools to perform tasks. The new Assistants API provides new capabilities such as Code Interpreter and Retrieval as well as function calling," said the company.<br /><br />OpenAI is introducing a text-to-speech API that offers six preset voices to choose from and two generative AI model variants.<br /><br />Developers can now generate human-quality speech from text via the text-to-speech API. OpenAI launches GPT-4 Turbo as ChatGPT hits 100 million weekly active users

We now have TVs available at different sizes, price points and of course by different brands offering a multitude of features. While we have seen the segment being taken over by affordable TVs when it comes to more masses, brands like Samsung, Sony and LG are leading the charge on the other end of the spectrum. Philips with its new line of smart TV’s is trying to be an alternative to these obvious choices. But does it? I have spent a month using the Philips 8100 series TV and here is my comprehensive review.<br /><strong><br />Price &amp; Availability</strong><br />The Philips 8100 series 50PUT8115 4K LED smart TV starts at a price ₹39,500 for the 43-inch variant, the 50-inch variant is priced at ₹48,900. There is another 55-inch variant offered at ₹52,490 and a 65-inch variant is priced at ₹89,900. Finally, there is also a 70-inch variant available for ₹1,04,990. The TVs are available on Amazon and selected offline retail stores.<br /><strong><br />Design &amp; Build</strong><br />The <keyword id="7634823" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="philips-tv" source="Orion">Philips TV</keyword> leaves a lot to be desired aesthetically. Sporting an overall black theme, the design is rather traditional and we don't get to see anything extra attempted by the design folks at Philips. Yes, we can pass it off as a minimal design choice but something as simple as a silver trim on the chin would have made it look slightly better.<br />      <div type="image" title="Philips 8100 series sports minimalistic design" msid="92363242" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Philips 8100 series sports minimalistic design&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean the TV looks bad sitting in your home. But if you have a vibrant room, then it might look off with your decor or will look rather bland to be precise.<br /><br />While most TV’s are generally placed in a dedicated space, it’s still expected to sport a sturdy build quality. Although the Philips 8100 series TV is mostly plastic, it still feels sturdy and is easy to move around. The slim profile of the TV also makes it easier for its mobility. <br /><br />The installation process is also quite simple. You can either put it on the stands provided in the box or or use the wall mount to hang it on the wall. <br /><br />Philips provides you with a plethora of connectivity options on the TV. There are 4 HDMI ports, all of which support 4K UHD resolution, 2 USB ports, and a TV antenna port. There is also a digital audio output port, a network port, and an earphone jack. <br /><br />Placed on the back towards the left side, the position of these ports is favorable for cable management as well. I had plugged in my set-top box and Playstation simultaneously and I didn’t find any issue. <br /><br />Philips bundles a remote controller with the TV. Combining both Bluetooth and IR the remote is chunkier than what we see on other smart TVs. The TV has a peak brightness of 400 nits which is fairly impressive on paper. But how’s the performance? Nothing extraordinary. But that doesn’t make it bad. <br /><br />The 4K panel produces vibrant images and the color accuracy is top-notch. The colors look rich, close to the source, and life-like. The images produced are crisp and the black levels are also satisfactory. The TV also supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision which kicks in when you are watching supported content, and yes it does make a difference. <br /><br />While I played Marvel’s Moon Knight on it, Dolby Vision kicked in automatically and enhanced both the visual and audio experience. I could count the grains in the sand while Mark Spector was racing through Egypt. <br /><br />To test its proficiency further I switched to Netlflix and watched Tik Tik Boom. The Andrew Garfield movie is in HDR10+ format, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it as it is supposed to be.<br />      <div type="image" title="TV retains natural colors" msid="92363724" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;TV retains natural colors&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> <br />In my experience so far, I have not come across any banding issue as such. Basically, there was no overlap of RGB color tones. As the case is with black levels in the TV, the light uniformity is also favorable. There were occasional misses on some shades of red, but nothing that would spoil your experience. <br /><br />Viewing angles is a tricky affair on this one. While the image quality stays intact when I am standing at around 30 degrees from the display, it spoils beyond that. To give you a reference - the TV is in my drawing room and my sofa is placed not exactly opposite to it. I had to move my sofa in front of the TV for a better experience. So if its a viewing party with multiple people in the room, some of you might have to sit on the floor. <br /><br />Like most other Smart TVs in this range, there are multiple picture modes on the 8100 series. Namely, there is a standard, vivid, sport, movie, game, and energy-saving mode. <br /><br />Each of them brings upon a dedicated preset which is customizable. The specifications include backlight, brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, and sharpness. While I made sure that I watch content specifically made for each mode, I saw myself coming back to the Vivid option more often. <br /><br />Having these options is great, but a user needs to scout back to the home menu to change the setting which can be annoying. I wish, Philips had added a dedicated button on the controller for this function, as they have for input modes. <br /><br />If you are someone who enjoys console gaming a lot, then with a 60Hz refresh rate the <keyword id="7076592" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="philips-smart-tv" source="Orion">Philips Smart TV</keyword> performs decently well. However, even with the dedicated game mode picture setting, there were glares on the TV that spoiled our experience. <br /><br />The display has been paired together with a dual speaker set-up providing a total audio output of 20W. The audio quality of the TV is fairly good and bassy. With Dolby Atmos support it is further enhanced for better audio detail. The UI is easier on the eyes, and even if you are not familiar with a smart TV set-up, you will learn your way around it quickly. <br /><br />A certified Google OS also means access to a well-rounded library of Google apps like Google movies and even the Playstore. Yes, the TV already comes preloaded with 3rd party OTT apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime, but you can download more. <br /><br />With available storage of 4.5GB, the TV cannot store multiple apps simultaneously. This is underwhelming since the competition like the Redmi TV provides 16GB of internal storage. <br /><br />It also cut shorts the potential of a Google-backed OS. Yes, you might say we use a Fire TV stick, so we don’t want internal storage, but then why do you need a smart TV at all? <br /><br />Fortunately, the apps that you finally retain onboard are managed well. The 1.5GB RAM smoothly handles applications and retains them for longer periods of time. I would switch between Youtube and Prime after a period of 2 hours sometimes and the TV would jump straight to the time code I left my movie on. <br /><br />There are other important Google features onboard like Google voice assistant which can be accessed from the bundled remote. So far, the TV has not missed a single voice command. Take note of this since many TVs suffer from accuracy issues on voice commands, even in the premium segment. <br /><br />You also get Google Chromecast built-in so, if you have to make certain presentations on it, you are good. The connectivity is seamless and it works in a jiffy. <br /><strong><br />Verdict</strong><br />Philips 8100 series smart TV packs in all the desired features that you expect from a product of this caliber, where it lags behind are the price. At ₹48,900 for 50-inch, it is costlier than its counterparts from Xiaomi and TCL, and also lags behind in terms of specs and features. Both companies are up from a year ago when Fitbit sold 2.3 million devices and Apple sold zero. </p><p>The total wearable industry grew almost 200% with sales rising from 7.1 million units to 21 million units. </p><p>Xiaomi, the Chinese startup, saw sales of 3.7 million wearable devices (up from 400,000 in the same period last year) while Garmin, the Swiss outdoor fitness company, saw sales of 900,000, up from 500,000 in the same period. </p><p>Fitbit sells a variety of fitness trackers which cost anywhere between £20 ($30) and £100 ($151). The Apple Watch starts at £299 ($349) and goes all the way up to £13,500 ($17,500). </p><p>Fitbit recently launched its corporate wellness service, which is now used by 70 Fortune 500 companies. The initiative aims to get employees fitter and more productive. The fallout from such a decision could cause Brent crude oil to crash to $25 per barrel, BAML says. Currently, the energy component trades down 0.6% at $48.05 per barrel.</p><p><strong><a href="http://www.zew.de/en/presse/pressearchiv/leichter-rueckgang-der-konjunkturerwartungen/">Germany's ZEW survey fell</a>.</strong> German economic sentiment fell in May. The ZEW survey sank to 6.4 from April's 11.2 print, missing economist expectations of a move up to 12.1. "The strong growth of the German economy in the first quarter of 2016 appears to have surprised the financial market experts," says Professor Achim Wambach, PhD, President of ZEW. "However, they seem not to expect the economic situation to improve at the same pace going forward. Uncertainties regarding developments such as a possible Brexit currently inhibit a more optimistic outlook." The euro is weaker by 0.4% at 1.1179.</p><p><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sterling-jumps-after-orb-poll-shows-remain-taking-a-big-lead-2016-5?r=UK&amp;IR=T">Remain is building a big lead in the Brexit vote</a>. </strong>A new poll conducted by <span>the ORB for the Daily Telegraph showed that </span>55% of people now back staying in the EU<span>, compared to just 42% wanting to leave. The latest results have sent the British pound higher by 0.8% at 1.4603. According to Moody's, "<span>Deutsche Bank's performance over the last several quarters has been weak, and substantial operating headwinds, including continuing low interest rates and macroeconomic uncertainty, will challenge the firm."</span></span></p><p><strong><a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-sony-outlook-idUSKCN0YF0IY">Sony had a rough quarter</a>.</strong> The electronics maker announced an operating profit of <span>300 billion yen ($2.75 billion) for the year ending March, missing the <span>409 billion yen Thomson Reuters estimate</span>. Sony said the disappointing quarter was the result of it being forced to close its<span> sensor plant in <span>Kumamoto</span> after earthquakes rocked the city. Sony says the quarter would've been in-line with estimates if the quakes didn't occur.</span></span></p><p><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/xiaomis-revenues-flat-in-2015-report-2016-5">The hottest startup in China is flatlining</a>.</strong> Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi barely grew in 2015, according to a report from Fortune's Scott Cendrowski. The report shows Xiaomi's revenue allegedly grew just 5% in 2015 to 78 billion yuan ($11.9 billion), missing the 100 billion yuan that analysts were expecting. Additionally, the Fortune report found internet services revenue of $560 million versus $1 billion predicted. A Xiaomi spokesperson told Business Insider, "<span>We are not able to comment on the revenue figure mentioned. What we have shared is that we sold over 70 million smartphones in 2015 despite the shrinking of the overall China smartphone market."</span></p><p><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-production-of-coke-halted-in-venezuela-for-lack-of-sugar-2016-5">Coca Cola production has been halted in Venezuela</a>.</strong> Venezuela's Coca Cola bottler has stopped production due to a sugar shortage, Reuters reports. According to an email sent to Reuters by <span>spokeswoman Kerry Tressler, diet drinks that don't contain sugar are still being produced. Venezuela is in the midst of an economic crisis that has produced food and power shortages amid high inflation.</span></p><p><strong>Stock markets around the world are mixed. </strong>France's CAC (+1.4%) leads the gains in Europe after Japan's Nikkei (-0.9%) trailed in Asia. It is understandable if the internet lingo would have made you believe they are high schoolers and undergrad Beliebers who love to follow trends and post memes. While the truth is most are working, creating those trends and didn’t have a virtual life before college. They are the core spenders in the world and the dream segment of nine out of ten brands. In the last decade justified by the abundance of internet information and acquired wokeness, they went from being the most brand loyal to least brand loyal demographic. One thing though is certain, they demand a certain shareability from every brand they engage with - shared purpose, passion and experience. So how do you market to the generation addicted to buying things yet vary of every advertisement and deal that reaches them? This is where the 4Cs come in:<br /><br />Custom: It’s 2020 and the clutter across is so much that millennials get hooked to anything curated for them, makes them feel unique and extra special (right up there with free shipping and easy returns). Even if it is the packaging of cola, chocolate bars, shoes or headphones. The personalisation though needs to happen in both marketing and operations for it to truly work. <br /><br />So Sainsbury’s will do geotargeting to people around their stores and treat them with coupons on specific products and categories they have previously purchased. Content streaming sites will show different movie posters in accordance to visual preferences. Even news sites are tailoring the position of articles to the relevant interest of returning visitors. If you want to design your favorite sneakers on NikeID and get a personalized video of your favorite athlete with your design and the order confirmation - it is already a reality. These kinds of surgical custom designed products and services are the new normal, irrespective of the category. Any brand that still thinks it can prosper with the millennials by talking to all of them at the same time is basically trying to trend the thousand year old Yoda during baby Yoda’s pinnacle.<br /><br />And you can see it even in brand ambassador choices, luxury carmaker Audi once only signing global HollyWood sweethearts like Hugh Jackman (peak of Wolverine) &amp; Chris Hemsworth (peak of Thor) is now enlisting Stephanie Gilmore, the seven time world surfer champion and Masie Williams, best known from the cult GoT driving their electric models. The millennials want to feel the communication is realistic and made for them.<br /><br />Conscious: In a world that feels on the edge all the time, a sense of shared purpose can be an exceptionally underrated motivator for millennials. They were the first generation coming out of their puberty listening to the desperate warnings of climate change. While stories of dire animal extinction and water wars have been there for two decades, they are finally in a position to do something about it. So when they have to choose between two global sports shoe brands one made from ocean waste, another from regular synthetic materials, the preference shift is automatic. When for baby boomers likeability of the products is paramount, millennials desire corporations they can look upto and pride in the said association. Overnight millennial hashtag takeovers on social media can tell you, an ethically and environmentally careless brand will be bulldozered irrespective of the billion dollar revenues it might have clocked until then. Aerie and Rihanna's profitable lingerie brands rightfully promote body positivity and comfort over being seduction machines. At the same time, the once legendary Victoria’s Secret, still insensitive in gauging the evolution of beauty and inclusion, consequently had to close 50+ stores in North America and even cancel its annual fashion show over declining viewership.<br /><br />Just last year Coke’s bold headline read: 'Don't buy Coca-Cola if you're not going to help us recycle!'. Levis’ claims to have saved 3 billion liters of water till now and their corporate goal this 2020 is to make 80% of denims with their Water&lt;Less™ techniques. Fast fashion giants H&amp;M with their Garment Collecting programme promises to use 100% of clothes gathered and even give gift vouchers in exchange to preserve a more sustainable environment. Do they stand the conscious test of millennials? While Forever 21 went bankrupt last year, H&amp;M as per official statement went on thriving globally with 33 percent increase in India, Poland by 21 percent, in Mexico by 18 percent and in Russia by 12 percent. And while denim brand Diesel filed for bankruptcy last March, Levis’ went public the same month, entered<a href="https://fortune.com/fortune500/2019/levi-strauss/"> Fortune 500</a> and saw an annual revenue growth of over 13.7%. So yes, sustainable stands by brands can be both socially contributive and profitable.<br /><br />Community: Millennials work on two spectrums simultaneously; personalisation and togetherness, much more than any other preceding generation. As much as they would need to feel special, they feel empowered with the knowledge of shared interests. That's why Marvel Universe becomes the global infallible franchise of the decade while Xiaomi (approx. 3% to 30%) and OnePlus (approx. 4% to 40%) enter the pinnacle of their smartphone segments in a highly competitive Indian market in just 4 years. And that’s the beautiful fabric of a strong brand community, it can create viable, long-term fans who not only purchase more but turn into serious advocates impressed with the quality of service and value system. Another reason community building is so imperative for millennial brands is that e-commerce in 2020 is deal driven and opportunist. A pure black Adidas training t-shirt is available on two dozen e-commerce websites from anywhere between 10-70% discount. The alarming bit though is that the same is true for similar competition offerings of Nike, Puma, Reebok and Under Armour. Without an earned community, none of them can survive in such a cannibalistic mass market.<br /><br />In the end we are living in that stage of civilisation where below the layers of custom we all love to be a part of a cult. Gifting that feeling of belongingness is the key to become more than a product, become the shared 'experience' you keep hearing about every now and then. A cafe like Starbucks boosts walk-ins from the stay at home generation with a loyalty program that makes the music playing at the cafe available for download through Spotify, Lyft users collating ride points for in-store purchases and the occasional free Instagram friendly Pumpkin spice. <br /><br />You are a new beer, you need to socialise in strategically designed brunches with the right crowd. You are a tea cafe and you need to do poetry readings and book signings so that a shared community evolves beyond the listed product or service. As long as the word is being positively spread by your homegrown community even before your advertising agencies, you will keep growing 2020 or 2050. <br /><br />Connected: Harnessing the intricate bond between audiences and brands technologically and emotionally. If there is one thing millennials respect as much as black friday deals, it is a brand who is smart and knows where, when and how to reach them real time. And especially since most know (and approve if the overall experience evolves remarkably) they are being tracked 24*7 through IoT hotwords and their internet journey, they expect you to market to them in smarter ways. Precisely why you need to be clever, it is an open book exam and just knowing the definition won’t impress the reviewer anymore. Automation is the expected form of communication and each product should transform into more than what it used to be. Smartphones are mini DSLRs, smartTVs convertible laptops and even players like Dyson have patented headphones that will purify the air around. Connected brand relationships are forged on transparency, value and relevance, are responsive to trends and proactively encourage immersive and memorable experiences.<br /><br />Millennials are habituated to infinite information and reviews at their fingertips. You can’t work in silos with a “great product” anymore, if your competition knows how to trend his pizza bar or sneaker cafe they are the one who will be written about and the hashtags tailor made for. Your marketing via technology needs to be connected at all levels and soon enough you will see your audience gravitating towards you. <br /><br />Upon deep data mining, Vans sees that skateboarders are one of their biggest supporters and decides to host House of Vans pop-up locations at skateparks within major cities like NYC and Chicago. This gave skateboarders a feeling of exclusive belongingness whilst sharing thoughts with like minded people, listening to live music, and shredding. What was step two? Vans then promoted the launch of their new shoe line honoring David Bowie in these pop ups. <br /><br />Millennials are like those misunderstood artists who might come across as aloof in the first go but when stirred with honesty they manifest into the most passionately driven customers.
