It’s not a new strain requiring another Greek letter designation, and it hasn't been shown to cause more severe disease compared to other Omicron subvariants. The strikes also crippled backup facilities which could have produced 2.27 million extra barrels per day. Though markets should be well supplied in the short term, it could take months to return to previous production levels, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-saudi-aramco/biggest-oil-price-surge-since-1991-as-locked-and-loaded-u-s-points-finger-at-iran-for-attack-idUSKBN1W10X8">sources close to the matter told Reuters</a>.</p><p>The Saturday attack "effectively eliminates the world's spare capacity," S&amp;P Global Platts global head of market insight Sarah Cottle <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2019/09/16/attack-on-saudi-oil-effectively-eliminates-global-spare-capacity-sp.html">told CNBC</a>.</p><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/exxon-mobil-bp-shell-chevron-surging-after-saudi-arabia-oil-strikes-2019-9-1028525772">US gasoline companies also rose</a> on the news. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/xom-stock">Exxon Mobil</a> rose about 3.3% in early trading, and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/cvx-stock">Chevron</a> jumped 3.4%.</p><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/oil-price">Brent crude oil</a> trades at $66.71 per barrel as of 9:00 a.m. ET Monday, up about 10.8% from the last closing price.
