Adani Transmission Ltd (<keyword id="447291" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="atl" source="Orion">ATL</keyword>), India's largest private power distribution company and the transmission arm of the diversified <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani Group</keyword>, has submitted its Green House Gases (GHG) emission reduction plans, focussing on Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an international drive for containing global warming. ATL has submitted its detailed plan and targets for GHG emission reduction to SBTi within one year towards its commitment to contribute to contain global warming. As a part of its continued focus on sustainable growth and its net zero journey, ATL committed for the SBTi in October 2021. ATL will act in alignment with the much-needed climate action and devise a strategy to restrict global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius. To meet these targets associated with the SBTi commitment, ATL has rolled out definite strategies. In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, ATL's subsidiary AEML (Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd) has introduced green tariffs, which enables AEML consumers to opt for green energy and receive a Green Power Certificate every month. This initiative is popular with consumers who wish to reduce their carbon footprint. "We take seriously all initiatives focused on contributing to India's climate commitment through resolute climate action," said <keyword id="175186" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="anil-sardana" source="Orion">Anil Sardana</keyword>, MD &amp; CEO, Adani Transmission Ltd. "Submitting targets for the SBTi reiterates our commitment to devising sustainable ways of doing business. It also reinforces India's efforts to reduce climate risk through individual and collective action. A culmination of several smaller actions such as energy efficiency initiatives at sub-stations, de-linking of substations from the grid for auxiliary power while connecting them with solar energy, and introduction of efficient transmission lines aimed at reducing losses, combined with wider actions such as introduction of green tariff at AEML, will significantly contribute towards achieving positive climate action." Signing up for the SBTi is an important step in the context of India's commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement. ATL became a signatory of UN Energy Compact at COP26 held in Glasgow in 2021. Through SBTi, companies are setting science-based emissions reduction targets - across their entire value chain - that are consistent with keeping global warming at 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels. SBTi committed companies get 24 months to submit their targets. ATL, after committing to SBTi in Oct 2021, is one of the few companies to submit the emission reduction targets within one year. SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (<keyword id="1044129" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wri" source="Orion">WRI</keyword>) and the <keyword id="62483" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-wide-fund-for-nature" source="Orion">World Wide Fund for Nature</keyword> (<keyword id="18630" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wwf" source="Orion">WWF</keyword>). <ul><li>The death toll from dog attacks in <keyword id="6357713" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> has risen to seven in the past month and 13 since November 2017.</li><li> A team from <keyword id="18630" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="WWF">WWF</keyword> has confirmed that dogs were behind the attacks. </li><li>The police have deployed drones to track and trap the feral dogs.</li></ul>Early Sunday morning, a young girl named Reena was mauled to death by a pack of feral dogs in <keyword id="6526489" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="maheshpur-chilwara">Maheshpur Chilwara</keyword> village, <keyword id="6369174" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sitapur">Sitapur</keyword> district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The latest death brings the death toll from dog attacks to seven in the past month and 13 since November 2017. While there were rumours that the creatures attacking the kids may be jackals or even wolves, or perhaps even a rare breed of man-eating dogs, a team from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have confirmed that common stray dogs were behind the attacks. 'The study of photographs of children attacked clearly showed that attacks were carried out by the dogs. Had any carnivore like wolf or hyena attacked then a larger mass from the body of the victim would have been eaten up and only bones would have been found,' WWF team members <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/lucknow/dogs-behind-sitapur-attacks-says-wwf/articleshow/64102862.cms">said</a>. However, the reason for the sudden surge in attacks has not been established. According to city magistrate Harsh Deo Pandey, who spoke to the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/up-sitapur-streets-out-of-bounds-for-kids-as-dogs-kill-10-year-old/articleshow/64152369.cms">Times of India</a> (TOI), Reena was out in a mango orchard with three other girls when a pack of dogs attacked them. While the three others managed to escape, the 10-year-old couldn’t. Right after the latest incident the administration ordered that children were not to move out of their homes without adult presence. District magistrate Sheetal Verma told TOI, "Block development officers, gram pradhans, lekhpals, doctors, teachers and kotedars (ration sellers) will set up committees to ensure no child goes out without any elder." The state’s Chief Minister, <keyword id="43254" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yogi-Adityanath">Yogi Adityanath</keyword>, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/lucknow/yogi-visits-sitapur-kin-of-those-killed-in-dog-attack-to-get-2l/articleshow/64131473.cms">visited</a> the district a few days back and apart from offering monetary compensation to the victims and their families, he ordered the administration to find a way stop the attacks. During his visit, he said, “There are 22 villages affected by this menace. We have seen children are particularly targeted by dogs. We are increasing security and will spread awareness among villagers not to let children go out alone. Cannes Lions 2021: On Day 3, India secures 21 shortlists

New Delhi, Dec 4 () India needs to reform its tariff regime to reduce dependence on discoms and bring new electricity procurement models to boost consumption of renewables by commercial and industrial (C&amp;I) consumers, according to an industry expert.
 As per a report by WWF-India, C&amp;I consumers account for 51 per cent of the total electricity consumption in India, which is equivalent to 1,130 TWh per annum.
 "Concerted government action is required to grow penetration of renewable power for these consumers. There are two broad areas of action required. First, we need tariff reform to reduce financial dependence of discoms on C&amp;I consumers. Second, new procurement models need to be enabled," said Bridge to India MD Vinay Rustagi at a CII event here.
 WWF-India report 'Global Corporate Renewable Power Procurement Models: Lessons for India' was also released at the event.
 According to the report, C&amp;I consumers' power demand is met principally by grid power (63 per cent) and onsite captive generation (27 per cent, mostly coal fired).
 Only 4 per cent is met by long-term open access (OA) sources. C&amp;I consumers' share of direct RE (renewable energy) procurement including rooftop solar is estimated at only 3.2 per cent for fiscal 2018.
 However, this 3.2 per cent procurement of clean energy excludes combined supply of renewable and conventional power by discoms.
 Many corporates have been proactive and announced voluntary carbon mitigation targets, along with increasing their renewable power consumption, Ravi Singh, Secretary General and CEO, WWF-India said.
 "Consumption of renewable power cannot only make C&amp;I consumers cost competitive and spur macro-economic growth, but also play a significant role in reducing India's carbon emissions," Singh said.
 As part of a stronger Climate Action Plan, India has committed to increase renewable power capacity target from 175 GW in 2022 to 450 GW by 2030.
 Greater adoption of clean energy by C&amp;I consumers is critical for meeting these national renewable energy and climate change commitments.
 The report also said captive coal-fired capacity in the country is estimated at 52,933 MW and combined share of renewable power in their consumption mix is likely to be only 10.5 per cent.
 With renewable power costs falling rapidly, C&amp;I consumers have a very strong financial incentive to switch to clean energy. They can not only make attractive savings of around 30-60 per cent on grid power, but also reduce carbon emissions and comply with renewable purchase obligations, the report suggests.
 Currently, the avenues available to C&amp;I consumers to procure renewable power are limited to rooftop solar installations, open access solar and wind power, and RECs (renewable energy certificates).
 However, even these options are not freely available because of various policy and market constraints.
 With the growing C&amp;I renewable power market worldwide, many new alternative procurement options have opened up. Virtual power purchase agreements, green tariffs, internationally tradable RECs (I-RECs) have already been successfully tried and tested in many countries.
 There are also proposals to set up dedicated renewable power exchanges and facilitate peer-to-peer (P2P) trading, the report added. KKS ANU

On Earth Day, brands urge you to switch off your lights today to ensure a brighter future tomorrow

<ul><li>We are drinking, eating, and breathing tiny plastics every day. </li><li>Tiny <keyword id="34567" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="plastic">plastic</keyword> particles known as <keyword id="1501683" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="microplastics">microplastics</keyword> are everywhere – including in our drinking-water. </li><li>According to WWF, an average person eats 100,000 microplastics in a year. </li></ul>You’re literally eating 5 gram of plastic in a week — that’s equivalent to the size of a credit card, <a href="https://yourplasticdiet.org">says WWF</a>. Nobody can avoid plastic, it is present in almost all the products we use everyday from toys, electronics, shampoo, cosmetics and countless, even in the food we eat and water we drink. According to WWF, an average person eats 100,000 microplastics in a year. ‘We are drinking, eating, and breathing tiny plastics every day’ UN s<a href="https://news.un.org/en/story/2019/08/1044661">cientists say </a>marine settings, freshwater, food, water and air consists microplastics. Yet, we are unaware of it affects us, as there is little information available on the effect of <keyword id="6489736" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="microplastic">microplastic</keyword>s. As of now, experts believe that microplastic in drinking water poses 'low risk' to humans. They can pass through the body without getting absorbed. "Tiny plastic particles known as microplastics are everywhere – including in our drinking-water but they are not necessarily a risk to human health," <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/microplastic-who-study/">said UN experts said on July 22.</a> UN has <a href="https://news.un.org/en/story/2019/08/1044661">urged further investigation</a> into the matter. Humans produced as much as 400 million tons of plastic in 2015. And, the amounts are only rising annually. <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/microplastic-who-study/">Experts </a>estimate that plastic production will double by 2025, <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/microplastic-who-study/">reported Wired</a>. Globally, people dump 8 million tons of plastic into the oceans and researchers aren't able to trace the 99% of it.  According to a report released by the <keyword id="62483" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="World-Wide-Fund-for-Nature">World Wide Fund for Nature</keyword> (WWF) on Monday, there are all sorts of them in the <keyword id="52569" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="himalayas">Himalayas</keyword> that we haven’t ever heard of or seen: Blue eyed frogs, sneezing monkeys, frogs that look like dead leaves, singing birds and what not! 

	The report named “Hidden Himalayas: Asia’s Wonderland” in fact lists out 211 such species that have been discovered in the Himalayas by different scientists and organizations. The areas where they have been spotted include Bhutan, Nepal, the far north of Myanmar, the southern parts of Tibet, but most of these fascinating creatures are from India.

He nursed the giant bird back to health with home remedies such as a mixture of mustard oil and turmeric applied to the bird's wounds and wrapped with bandages. "In that time, he walked very, very slowly. After a month, we removed the bandage and found that he could stand on his feet," Gurjar told The Times. Although Gurjar expected the bird to fly away once it had healed, the pair instead became inseparable. Sarus will now not leave Gurjar's side. He will eat off of his plate and will fly alongside him as Gurjar takes his scooter for a ride. In his interview with The Times, Gurjar said, "On some days, he flies away but always returns by sunset. Friendship thrives on freedom. He roams around freely, and we never constrain him," he added."I know 100% he will not leave me. If he does, I will feel pain. But I know he won't," he said. <a href="https://www.wwfindia.org/about_wwf/priority_species/threatened_species/sarus_crane/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to WWF India</a>, the Sarus crane can stand nearly six feet tall with a massive wingspan of up to eight feet. It is the tallest flying bird in the world.Cranes are naturally sociable creatures, but friendships like Sarus' and Gurjap's are rare. Cranes across India are threatened by the increase in agricultural land and the subsequent destruction of the natural habitat of wetlands and grassland. As a result, sarus cranes have to forage for food in agricultural fields and can sometimes ingest pesticides, leading to poisonings.

Data from Brazilian satellites have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-losing-3-football-fields-worth-of-rainforest-per-minute-2019-8">indicated</a> that about three football fields' worth of Amazonian trees are falling every minute.<h2>An anchor for weather patterns</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C2015%3Anewsml_GF10000234640&amp;share=true">Bruno Kelly/Reuters</a>A man swims with his kid on the waters of the Parana do Amana river at Vila Nova do Amana community in the Sustainable Development Reserve, in Amazonas state, Brazil, September 22, 2015.</div></div></div>A <a href="https://www.wriorg.s3.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/ending-tropical-deforestation-tropical-forests-climate-change.pdf">2018 report</a> from the World Resources Institute (WRI) found that tropical deforestation disrupts the water cycle so much that it can threaten agriculture halfway around the globe."Tropical forest loss is having a larger impact on the climate than has been commonly understood," the report authors wrote.The Amazon plays a large role in rain patterns because the moisture that its vegetation traps and releases travels as clouds for thousands of miles.<a href="https://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/full/10.1175/JHM406.1">Climate models</a> show that the Amazon's moisture affects rainfall as far away as the US. A new species is discovered in the Amazon every <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2017/08/amazon-brazil-new-species-discovered-spd/">two</a> or <a href="https://www.wwf.org.uk/where-we-work/places/amazon">three</a> days. "Every species in this incredibly biodiverse system represents solutions to a set of biological challenges - any one of which has transformative potential and could generate global human benefits," ecologist Thomas Lovejoy told <a href="https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/feature/2019/05/22/why-the-amazons-biodiversity-is-critical-for-the-globe">the World Bank</a>. "This rich wealth of species brims with promise, awaiting discovery."People have used Amazonian plants to produce <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/rainforests-are-fast-becoming-a-laboratory-for-cancer-drugs">anti-cancer drugs</a> and the first anti-malarial drug, quinine. Thick vines also hold up the structures of the trees whose leaves send water vapor into the atmosphere. And a variety of animals pollinate forest plants, disperse seeds, and nourish the soil with their waste.
