Former World no. 1 <keyword id="25683" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="venus-williams" source="Orion">Venus Williams</keyword> is gearing for a comeback during the North American hard-court tennis season. Drawing inspiration from her sister <keyword id="19996430" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="serena-williams" source="keywords">Serena Williams</keyword>, she is determined to make a successful return to the sport. <br /><br />In a recent video shared on her YouTube channel, the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion expressed her aspirations to participate in the <keyword id="13862998" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wta-1000" source="Orion">WTA 1000</keyword> events in Indian Wells and Miami, considering them "big goals".<br /><br />"One of my big goals is to play United States, to play in the <keyword id="279394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="miami-open" source="Orion">Miami Open</keyword> and at Indian Wells," Williams said. "I have not played there since 2019 due to injuries. It's a long time... It's a lot of years not to play at home. So that's of course one of my big goals on the horizon, is to be there, prepare to do that. Amongst many goals on the court, too.<br /><br />"My little sister, Serena, told me I'm not allowed to quit, and of course, I would never quit. But it's the mandate. She said no, so I will be back on the court," Venus was quoted by WTA website.<br /><br />In the video, the 43-year-old Williams revealed the challenges she has faced with injuries over the past year and discussed the knee injury that left her hobbling off Centre Court at Wimbledon last summer (she took a fall in the second game of her first-round match against Elina Svitolina) at length for the first time.<br /><br />"I don't talk a lot about my injuries because I hate complaining," she said, but called the cartilage damage she suffered as one of the "craziest" injuries she's tried to play through in her long and storied career.<br /><br />After the early exit at Wimbledon, Williams said the lingering swelling and pain impacted her ability to train and even, sometimes, walk -- in advance of events in Montreal and Cincinnati, as well as the US Open. Despite that, she scored what was then a Top 10 victory over Veronika Kudermetova in Cincinnati, her first Top 10 win in four years.<br /><br />But after that tournament, the swelling in her knee blew up and she was forced to withdraw from the WTA 250 event in Cleveland, where she had intended to play as a wild-card entry.<br /><br />"I felt terrible about that, because when I give my word, I keep it. When I said I was going to Cleveland, I meant it, and the fact I had to withdraw, I felt miserable because that's not me. I do what I say I'm going to do."<br /><br />In an effort to play the US Open, Williams revealed she had a cortisone injection for the first time in her three-decade career, but it did little to help. Her season eventually ended with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Belgian qualifier Greet Minnen in the first round, the heaviest defeat she ever suffered at her home Grand Slam event.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Ukrainian <keyword id="11897437" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tennis" source="Orion">tennis</keyword> player Marta Kostyuk has hit out at the sport's gender pay gap.</li><li>A study last year found that <a href="https://www.money.co.uk/investing/female-sports-investments">female tennis players earn on average 34% less than male players.</a></li></ul><p>The Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk has hit out at the sport's gender pay gap.</p><p>A study last year found that <a href="https://www.money.co.uk/investing/female-sports-investments">elite female tennis players earn on average 34% less than their male counterparts.</a></p><p>On Thursday, the 19-year-old Kostyuk highlighted that gap on Twitter by sharing screenshots of the prize money from two Tour 500 level tournaments – one men's and one women's.</p><p>The figures show that the prize money for winning this year's ATP Halle 500, a men's tournament, is $418,000, while the prize money for winning last year's WTA Berlin 500, a women's tournament, was just $58,000 – an 87% difference.</p><p>"Are we really that bad?" wrote Kostyuk alongside the images.</p><p>Tennis reporter Ben Rothenberg was quick to point out that the prize money for this year's Berlin 500 had risen to $98,000 – cutting the gap between the two tournaments to 77%.</p><p>But he added that Kostyuk was right to point out the difference and that the pay gap between men's and women's tournaments is still "growing considerably."</p><p>At last month's Italian Open in Rome, an Masters 1000 tournament that has both a male and female draw, British reporter Catherine Whitaker highlighted a similar issue.</p><p>She pointed out that women who reached the same stage as men in their respective tournaments would earn significantly less, most notably the winners.</p><p>The winner of the men's tournament, Novak Djokovic, took home $877,000 while the winner of the women's tournament, Iga Swiatek, won only $338,000.</p><p>"Rome prize money next week," she said. "Same points, same status, same stage. The only thing that would make this bearable is if Taylor Swift wrote a song about it."</p><p>While there remains a pay gap between ATP and WTA tournaments of the same level, tennis' four Grand Slams pay men and women equal prize money.</p><p>Pay at the Slams was unequal until Billie Jean King formed the Women's Tennis Association in 1973 and successfully demanded the US Open pay its male and female players the same.</p><p>The Australian Open did the same in 1984 (though it did revert its decision between 1996 and 2000), while the French Open and Wimbledon followed suit in 2006 and 2007 respectively. </p><p>Combined Masters events, such as Indian Wells and the Miami Open, also pay the same to men and women.</p><p>Earlier this year, tennis superstar <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/serena-williams-sports-gender-inequality/">Serena Williams told CBS News</a> that she believed the <keyword id="11893855" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sports" source="Orion">sports</keyword> world was making positive steps towards equality in gender pay, but that such things "take time."</p><p>"You just can't expect things to change overnight," she said. "I like that people are starting to recognize that women do deserve equal pay and they deserve the same that a male gets."</p>

SAR closed both its elementary and high schools on Tuesday.</li><li>This is the first apparent case of community spread of coronavirus in New York - the man didn't travel to China or knowingly interact with anyone who was infected. </li><li>New York has reported two cases of the virus so far, but Gov. The office building is located in the vicinity of Grand Central Terminal, which sees around 750,000 daily commuters.</p><p>The man's firm represents clients throughout New York City and its surrounding areas. The man had recently returned to New York from a trip to Miami before being diagnosed. This is the first apparent case of community spread of coronavirus in New York. The man had not traveled to China and didn't knowingly interact with anyone who was infected with the coronavirus.</p><p>Representatives from the man's law firm declined to comment. </p><h2>A man who resides in Westchester, NY and works in Manhattan was diagnosed with coronavirus</h2><p>The man lives in New Rochelle, a city in Westchester County, New York and commutes daily into Manhattan, sources said. In a Tuesday press conference, Governor Andrew Cuomo said he wasn't sure what method of transportation the man took to work.</p><p>One of the most common methods of transit from New Rochelle to Manhattan is the Metro-North Railroad, which passes through Grand Central Terminal. </p><p>The patient was originally admitted to Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, New York, then transferred to a New York City hospital, Cuomo said during the press conference. He is in serious condition and already had preexisting respiratory problems. </p><h2>The case has prompted 3 school closures in the Bronx and Westchester</h2><p>The man is a married father of four. <a href="https://twitter.com/GloriaPazmino/status/1234906109892317186">Two of the children who have exhibited symptoms</a> and are being <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-to-buy-for-home-quarantine-coronavirus-2020-3">isolated at home</a>, as is the standard protocol, Gloria Pazmino, a NY1 reporter, wrote on Twitter. </p><p>One of the children in isolation attends SAR Academy High School, a private Jewish school in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. SAR sent out a message on Tuesday morning, notifying parents of the coronavirus case and announced that the school had decided to close both its elementary school and high school as a "precautionary measure." The two schools are located on separate campuses in Riverdale. </p><p>In a note to parents, an official at the SAR Academy elementary school said that the school is coordinating with the New York State and New York City Departments of Health.</p><p>"We are following their instructions and recommendations," the official said in the email to parents. </p><p>The school added that it will continue to keep parents updated. As of 2 p.m. on Tuesday, parents hadn't received any other information.</p><p>Two other private Jewish schools in Westchester - Westchester Torah Academy (WTA) in White Plains, New York and Westchester Day School in Mamaroneck, New York - also closed school on Tuesday. WTA notified parents of the closure via email and WhatsApp on Tuesday morning after a number of children in the community had already been picked up by the buses for school. </p><p>"We will be turning the buses around and sending your children back home," school officials wrote in a letter to parents.</p><p>Following news of the diagnosis, members of the Jewish community in Westchester put out calls on social media for people to pray for the man's recovery.</p><h2>The US has more than 100 cases of coronavirus across 15 states</h2><p>The US has reported more than 100 cases of the virus across 15 states so far, though in two of those states - Nebraska and Texas - the infections are only among repatriated citizens. New York's first case was a Manhattan woman who had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-state-confirms-first-coronavirus-case-2020-3/?r=AU&amp;IR=T">recently traveled to Iran</a>.</p><p>On Tuesday, Cuomo said the continued spread of the virus in New York was "inevitable."</p><p>"Most people who get infected won't even know they have it," he said. </p><p>A day earlier, Cuomo said the state health department was partnering with local hospitals to expand testing capacity for the virus. Their goal is to conduct 1,000 test per day, he said - but the current capacity is still limited. The federal government only recently approved New York to test for the virus on Saturday.</p><p>"We're at a couple of hundred tests per day, so you prioritize who can be tested," Cuomo said on Tuesday. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Roger Federer just won the Swiss Indoors title - it was the 10th time he has won the competition.</li><li>It is a far cry from the days he when he was a ball boy in Basel back in 1993.</li><li>And perhaps reflecting on that journey, Federer couldn't help but get teary-eyed and emotional during the trophy celebration and post-match interview.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Roger Federer was reduced to tears during a trophy celebration and post-match interview after he won a record 10th Swiss Indoors title in Basel.</p><p>Federer defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) on Sunday, winning the entire tournament without dropping a set after victories over Peter Gojowczyk, Radu Albot, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.</p><p>Winning the tournament this weekend saw Federer extend his own record in Basel, creating even more distance between himself and the next most prolific competition winner Stefan Edberg, who won the Swiss Indoors trophy three times in the 1980s.</p><p>It is a far cry from 1993, when Federer was a ball boy in Basel.</p><p>And, perhaps reflecting on that journey, Federer failed to hold back the emotion when he had the trophy in his hands and attempted to speak to his home crowd.</p><p>"I would have never thought to win here 10 times, not even one, so it's very special," he said, <a href="https://twitter.com/swiss_tennis/status/1188481209652989960" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Swiss Tennis</a>. Serena Williams named Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson of the Year

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Scott Barbour/Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Both Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams will play in the finals of the Australian Open this weekend, but the main story coming out of Melbourne over the past two weeks has been the controversy surrounding allegations of rampant match-fixing in tennis.  </p><p>On Wednesday, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/28/sports/tennis/australian-open-match-fixing-essay.html?ref=sports&amp;_r=0">the NYT's Ben Rothenberg published</a> a first-person account of a brief and bizarre online correspondence he had with a Russian man who claimed to be part of the shadowy world of tennis gambling and match-fixing. Rothenberg is explicitly skeptical of the man and his claims, but the piece is nevertheless illuminating and deserves to be read in its entirety because it sheds light on the sketchy figures lurking on the fringes of the sport. </p><p>One especially noteworthy section comes when this man tells Rothenberg about the different prices a tennis player might make for throwing a match, or a set, or a point, and so forth. </p><p>From Rothenberg:</p><p class="story-body-text story-content" style="padding-left: 30px;" data-para-count="248" data-total-count="4423">He also claimed to know the rough prices of various fixes on the menu, which I couldn't independently corroborate. Buying a service break at a Futures event cost $300 to $500, he said. A set was $1,000 to $2,000, and a match was $2,000 to $3,000.</p><p class="story-body-text story-content" style="padding-left: 30px;" data-para-count="151" data-total-count="4574">It was more expensive to fix an outcome on the next tier, the Challenger level, with sets and matches running in the $10,000-to-$15,000 range, he said.</p><p class="story-body-text story-content" style="padding-left: 30px;" data-para-count="103" data-total-count="4677">On the ATP and WTA Tours, a single set could cost $25,000. A match was in the neighborhood of $100,000.</p><p class="story-body-text story-content" data-para-count="103" data-total-count="4677">Many of the tournaments in which this man alleged to Rothenberg that match-fixing was taking place were tournaments with very little prize money between players even the most devout tennis fans wouldn't ever recognize. Even Rothenberg, arguably the most well-informed tennis journalist working today, didn't recognize many of the players' names.</p><p class="story-body-text story-content" data-para-count="103" data-total-count="4677">Still, the stench of match-fixing has been strong at the Australian Open.</p><p class="story-body-text story-content" data-para-count="103" data-total-count="4677">Not long after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bombshell-report-finds-evidence-of-widespread-match-fixing-in-tennis-2016-1">BuzzFeed and the BBC published</a> a bombshell report of match-fixing prior to the start of the tournament, the New York Times reported that a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/new-report-of-match-fixing-at-2016-australian-open-2016-1">popular betting website had suspending activity</a> after an unusually large swell of betting activity came in prior to a seemingly random first-round mixed-doubles match of the Australian Open.</p><p>Lleyton Hewitt, the former world no. 1, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lleyton-hewitt-denies-match-fixing-allegations-2016-1">furiously denied</a> allegations that he was among the anonymous players linked to match-fixing by BuzzFeed and the BBC. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/novak-djokovic-was-offered-200000-to-fix-a-tennis-match-2016-1">Djokovic said</a> in a press conference that he was once offered $200,000 to throw a match. <a href="http://edition.cnn.com/2016/01/26/tennis/tennis-match-fixing-anti-corruption/">Tennis officials announced</a> an independent body would investigate allegations. </p><p>Each subsequent report and story that has come out about match-fixing in tennis has resulted in more confusion than clarity on the issue. One problem is that the phrase "professional tennis" blankets hundreds of thousands of matches taking place on many different levels all over the world.</p><p>Match-fixing at a Futures event or ATP Challenger Series tournament might very likely occur with regularity, but is roughly the equivalent of something similar happening in low-level minor league baseball game. This is (obviously) still unethical and illegal, but a lot different than a match in the main draw of Wimbledon. Many players and writers have wondered if the scandal has deserved the attention it's received.</p><p class="story-body-text story-content" data-para-count="103" data-total-count="4677">With point-per-point betting happening across the world, on matches in bottom-tier Futures tournaments where a first-round loser would collect as little as $98, is it any wonder that match-fixing is occurring?
