Things might have looked like they are changing with OTTs valuing story over the star (unlike films), but writers are yet to get their due — both in terms of pay and credit, says a report by Ormax and Tulsea. As many as 63% in the survey of writers believe they are not being paid fairly, even as 65% said that pay levels have improved in recent years. However, 47% are impacted by lack of timeliness in payments – which is a significant concern. A dominant majority of writers – 91% – believe that a hybrid pay model, consisting of a mix of fixed pay and incentive/bonus, will motivate them to do better work, and lead to higher ownership. However, only 31% have ever been offered a contract of this nature so far. The report ‘The Right Draft’ was conducted among 217 film and series writers in India across Hindi, English and four South Indian languages. “It is well understood that writers are pivotal to the creative process, especially in the era of streaming platforms and in the post-pandemic world, where the audience are more demanding of good stories than ever before. Yet, the writers have struggled to get their due," said Datta Dave, co-founder of Tulsea. It’s not just about money! As many as 53% writers said that they are dissatisfied with the credit they receive for their work. “The dissatisfaction with credit in marketing and promotions is even higher, touching 65-80% of different types of marketing activities,” the report said. However, the value of scripts and screenwriters is different across industries. As many as 90% writers believe theatrical business values stars over scripts, while the view is a lot more balanced for the OTT industry, though still tilted away from scripts and towards stars. A large section of writers believe that they do not have adequate access to mentoring, infrastructure, grievance redressal, and other such industry forms of support. Shailesh Kapoor, founder-CEO, Ormax Media said that the satisfaction levels of Indian writers with their role and place in the industry is an often-ignored topic. “We have always believed that measuring the quantum of a problem is the first step to finding solutions, and this report too aims to do the same, by creating conversations that are more data-led and objective,” he added. However, it also looks like most screenwriters do not intend to do just that. As many as 91% writers said they have considered becoming a director or a producer at some point of time. As many as 26% said that they already made this transition even as they continue to write. But few are going to higher jobs for money. As producers and directors, writers have more creative freedom on the product they create. India is drawing lessons from Ukraine to counter China's military might 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"We will not stop at that (three carriers)," India's defense minister recently said.</li><li>Five or six aircraft carriers would give India a force equal to that of China.</li></ul>India may build a fleet of five to six new aircraft carriers, according to a comment from the country's defense minister that's been widely debated about whether that's a good strategy or if the offhand remark was even serious.The Indian Navy operates two small aircraft carriers. Four more would give India a carrier force on par with China's growing one. And it would not be much smaller — at least in number of vessels — than the US Navy's 11 supercarriers.But whether this ambitious shipbuilding project will happen is another matter. Many Indian experts are convinced it's a bad idea.Exactly what the Indian government is thinking isn't clear. During an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/india/work-on-third-aircraft-carrier-to-start-soon-more-to-follow-says-rajnath-621319">interview</a> with an Indian newspaper regarding plans to construct a third aircraft carrier, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said India would build yet more. "We will not stop at that (three carriers)," he said. "We will make five, six more."Some Indian experts aren't sure the government is even serious about this. The defense minister "seemingly made an off-the-cuff remark that was picked up by the media," Abhijit Singh, a former Indian naval officer and now an analyst at the Observer Research Foundation think tank in New Delhi, told Business Insider. "He was only trying to dispel suggestions that the government is resistant to a proposal for a third aircraft carrier."Nonetheless, there are compelling reasons why India might want a large carrier fleet. India's rival China now has three carriers, including the newly launched 80,000-ton <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-newest-aircraft-carrier-seen-with-aircraft-mock-ups-images-2024-4">Fujian</a>, and may aim for a fleet of six carriers by 2035. China — which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-troops-beat-indian-soldiers-batons-wrapped-in-barbed-wire-2020-6">fought</a> border clashes with India in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/after-himalayan-clash-india-prepares-navy-to-take-on-china-2021-6">Himalayas</a> in 2020 — is beginning to project its power into the <a target="_blank" href="https://warontherocks.com/2024/05/its-still-the-indian-ocean-parsing-sino-indian-naval-competition-where-it-counts/">Indian Ocean</a>, which is India's maritime backyard."It is expected that the Chinese will permanently station one of its CBGs [carrier battle groups] in the Indian Ocean, supported by its various bases in Djibouti (on the western edge of the Indian Ocean), <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rapid-construction-at-cambodia-base-amid-concern-about-china-presence-2021-6">Ream in Cambodia</a> (on the eastern edge of the Indian Ocean), and Gwadar in Pakistan, Hambantota in Sri Lanka, and Kyaukpyu in Myanmar," warned India's <a target="_blank" href="https://swarajyamag.com/defence/countering-chinas-expansion-india-to-build-five-to-six-more-aircraft-carriers-in-future-defence-minister-rajnath-singh">Swarajya</a> magazine.Interestingly, Swarajya magazine also suggested that carriers could project Indian power into the South China Sea, which is China's maritime backyard. Both are <a target="_blank" href="https://interestingengineering.com/lists/ski-jumps-catapults-aircraft-carrier">ski-jump</a> designs that launch the troubled Soviet-era MiG-29K under its own power because it lacks catapults. Despite early speculation that the proposed third carrier would be a 65,000-ton ski-jump design similar to Britain's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uks-flagship-carrier-embarrassing-setback-pulls-out-big-nato-exercise-2024-2">Queen Elizabeth-class</a>, the Indian government appears to be opting for a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsweek.com/india-third-aircraft-carrier-china-indian-pacific-ocean-region-1847935">45,000-ton vessel</a> similar to the Vikrant, and carrying French-made <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/frances-rafale-fighter-jet-popular-dassault-cant-keep-up-2024-3">Rafale fighters</a>.This means that Indian carriers would continue to be less than half the size of the 100,000-ton, nuclear-powered US Nimitz- and Ford-class behemoths, which are equipped with steam or electromagnetic catapults that can launch heavier planes, especially airborne early warning aircraft; China's Fujian also uses an advanced electromagnetic catapult. They would also be less expensive, with the third Indian carrier estimated at around $5 billion, compared to $13 billion for a Ford-class carrier.In fact, some Indian naval experts would prefer a larger carrier equipped with catapults. "Small aircraft carriers, like those India possesses, are increasingly vulnerable and unlikely to play a significant role in future conflicts," Singh, the defense analyst, said. "Unfortunately, the country lacks the funding for a large carrier and can only afford another small flattop. This presents a predicament with no easy solutions."On the other hand, there is a reason why America builds enormously expensive aircraft carriers. Its global interests arguably require the ability to dispatch and maintain floating airfields around the world, often in distant places where airbases aren't available. For India and China, which have a more regional focus, smaller vessels may suffice.For India, carriers are more than floating airfields. They are symbols of national power. Thus regardless of their military utility against a powerful adversary like China, carriers would enable India support other operations, such as humanitarian, peacekeeping and anti-piracy missions."The consensus among India's maritime observers is that the aircraft carrier remains central to maritime strategy, not just for its ability to dominate the littoral but also for its crucial peacetime role," said Abhijit Singh. "In less-than-war situations, the flattop can shift the psychological balance in ways no other naval platform can. It has caught the fancy of millions of people and organisations around the world only after the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020. As far as the mainstream goes, tele migration has been in the public discourse for just over a year now. In a conversation with Business Insider during the <a href="https://fow.businessinsider.in/">Future of Work 2021 event</a>, India's chief economic advisor, <keyword id="7356161" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="K-V-Subramanian" source="Orion">K V Subramanian</keyword> underlined that telemigration pre-pandemic would have been unimaginable. However, things have changed drastically since then. And there’s a good reason behind this. With adequate internet connectivity, millions of employees and organisations have realised that it’s not necessary to have people in offices all year round. A few even found success at film festivals, but no Indian movie could capture the hearts of people across countries – not the way Ang Lee’s movie did. UK-based Gurinder Chadha too made superhit movies like ‘Bend it like Beckham’ and ‘Bride and Prejudice’ about Indians, but they were told from an immigrant Indian perspective. Even when Mumbai stories like Slumdog Millionaire were told, they were told by US-based directors like Danny Boyle. Desi movies were far from achieving any kind of acclaim or success. Chopra was further disheartened when director Anurag Kashyap told her once that <keyword id="20382" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="indian-movies" source="Orion">Indian movies</keyword> were just a comic relief. She never believed that, she shared at Zee5 Global’s panel discussion on ‘Coming of Age of South Asian Entertainment: The Time is Now’ in Mumbai. 2023: The year that changed it all Then Rajamouli’s RRR happened, and its song-and-dance number Natu Natu won an Oscar in 2023. That’s victory for the Indian way of story-telling on-screen that was once made fun of. “RRR changed the way Americans saw <keyword id="35703" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-films" source="Orion">Indian films</keyword>. People in the US were having watch parties for RRR. We were no longer that awkward brown guy with a strange accent. There was a sense of crossover taking place and that got us ambitious,” said Archana Anand, chief business officer of ZEE5 Global. Guneet Monga who also won the Best Documentary Short Film at the Oscars in 2023, believes that the path has been charted, and better things are waiting to happen. “We'll soon have our very own Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. We have the talent and technicians,” she added. The director of Maqbool, Vishal Bharadwaj also chimed in, saying, “At the rate we are going, a Parasite is waiting to happen here. An Indian film that will break all records and make it big all over the world.” Parasite is a South Korean black comedy which created history by becoming the first non-English language movie to win the Best Picture academy award. It swept the awards that year, bagging three more Oscar awards for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. Movies that went as ‘series’ Before the Oscar wins, Indian movies have been breaking through slowly albeit steadily, reminisced the film-makers. The West started looking at Indian movies differently after the iconic movie-maker Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen which released in 1994. He later went on to make a full-fledged international movie Elizabeth, starring Cate Blanchett. “We’ve had AR Rahman’s success with his music in Slumdog Millionaire. I’ve had my own experience with Maqbool going to Toronto. With humility, I want to say that many people are doing doctorates on my Shakespeare trilogy,” said Bhardwaj. Music composer AR Rahman shared an Oscar for his song ‘Jai Ho’ with song writer Gulzar for the movie Slumdog Millionaire. Distribution is key to taking Indian movies to lands afar, believes Monga, adding that streaming services play a role. “Gangs of Wasseypur was the first Indian five-and-half-hour film that was released as an eight-part miniseries in the US,” she told the audience.

Aside from offering the publishing platform like Amazon and Fictionpress.com, Wattpad has created a community for writers. There are forums and contests to engage with peers around the world. Winners of these contests have been known to find publishers. "My Life with the Walter Boys" by Ali Novak, "The Kissing Booth" by Beth Reekles, and "Nothing Left to Lose" by Kristy Moresely, found publishers for the paperback versions through Wattpad, according to a review on another online publishing platform Odyssey. Novak’s work, for instance, had 33 million reads even before it got published, <a href="https://www.amazon.in/Life-Walter-Boys-Ali-Novak/dp/1402297866">according</a> to Amazon. That was the reach of Wattpad in 2014. Wattpad uses machine learning to discover stand-out stories among the over 565 million stories on its platform, the company said in a statement. In 2018, it also tied up with Sony, online streaming service iflix, TV show producers Huayi Brothers Korea and Bavaria Fiction, and the US cable television channel SYFY to turn many of the stories into books, TV shows, films, and digital projects. Our investment will advance Wattpad’s mission, and original storytelling, across the Indian subcontinent, unlocking the creativity of many millions along the way,” Rishi Jaitly, the CEO of Times Bridge, said. Tencent-backed Wattpad has tied up with Times Bridge to woo more Indian writers and readers

A significant percentage of companies in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> believe the advent of 5G will herald a transformative era in the world of work, unlocking a wealth of opportunities for India's tech talent pool, says a report. According to the report by staffing company <keyword id="6381892" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="teamlease-services" source="Orion">TeamLease Services</keyword>, over 80 per cent of respondents believe that IT and banking and <keyword id="6354241" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="financial-services" source="Orion">Financial Services</keyword> will benefit from the 5G technology in terms of job creation and upskilling. The report titled "India's 5G rollout: Revolutionising the People Supply Chain" is based on responses of over 247 companies on the impact of 5G on the ecosystem and employment generation. "With substantial investments, such as the PLI scheme allocating Rs 12,000 crore to the telecom sector, with approximately 25 per cent dedicated to creating new jobs, we are poised for a positive outlook on job creation and upskilling," TeamLease Services CEO - Staffing, Kartik <keyword id="6386349" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narayan" source="Orion">Narayan</keyword> said. This will boost confidence to harness the potential of 5G, creating unprecedented job opportunities, driving innovation and shaping a transformative future, he added. The adoption of 5G will have significant impact on industries such as <keyword id="6356925" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bfsi" source="Orion">BFSI</keyword> (60 per cent), education (48 per cent), gaming (48 per cent) and retail and e-commerce (46 per cent), the report said. On a year-on-year basis, 46 per cent of participants anticipate job creation ranging from 61 per cent to 80 per cent within the first year of 5G implementation. "Telecommunications companies embracing 5G solutions present a promising growth opportunity. As telcos leverage the potential of 5G in network upgradation, migration, IoT/IIoT, mobility, network infrastructure, and network security, we anticipate increased hiring for specialised roles," Narayan said. This advancement creates new opportunities and drives demand for roles such as technical content writers, networking engineers, AI/ML professionals, UX designers, cloud computing engineers, cybersecurity specialists, data science and analytical experts and more, he added. The report, however, noted that the telecom industry is facing a considerable demand-supply gap of 28 per cent, which emphasises the urgent need for comprehensive upskilling and reskilling initiatives. Encouragingly, 88 per cent of employees expressed a preference for upskilling, indicating a strong desire to enhance their existing skill sets, the report said. Additionally, 11.2 per cent of employees showed a preference for reskilling, presenting significant opportunities in the job market for fresh talent, it added. The report also highlighted the impact of 5G on job creation over the next few years, with 41 per cent of respondents expecting an impact of more than 80 per cent on job creation over the next three years of 5G rollout. According to Narayan the impending 5G rollout is expected to lead to an 80 per cent increase in tech-related jobs.
