<ul><li>The <keyword id="6355833" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Nations" source="Orion">United Nations</keyword> suggest that the global <keyword id="48933" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="population" source="Orion">population</keyword> could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.4 billion in 2100.</li><li>According to the World Population Prospect report, the global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950.</li><li>It took 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion.</li></ul>The world's population is projected to reach 8 billion people on Tuesday, according to the UN estimates, which consider this a milestone in human development. The latest projections by the United Nations suggest that the global population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.4 billion in 2100. The annual World Population Prospect report, released on Monday to coincide with <keyword id="203146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-population-day" source="Orion">World Population Day</keyword>, also notes that the global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950, having fallen to less that one per cent in 2020. While it took the global population 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion, it will take approximately 15 years--until 2037-- for it to reach 9 billion, a sign that the overall growth rate of the global population is slowing. In 2022, the two most populous regions were both in <keyword id="21718" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asia" source="Orion">Asia</keyword>: Eastern and South-Eastern Asia with 2.3 billion people and Central and Southern Asia with 2.1 billion. <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="China" source="Orion">China</keyword> and <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="Orion">India</keyword>, with more than 1.4 billion each, accounted for most of the population in these two regions. More than half of the projected increase in global population up to 2050 will be concentrated in just eight countries: Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania. Disparate growth rates among the world's largest countries will re-order their ranking by size. According to UN estimates, India is projected to surpass China as the world's most populous country during 2023. Population growth is caused in part by declining levels of mortality, as reflected in increased levels of life expectancy at birth. Globally, life expectancy reached 72.8 years in 2019, an increase of almost 9 years since 1990. Further reductions in mortality are projected to result in an average longevity of around 77.2 years globally in 2050. Countries with the highest fertility levels tend to be those with the lowest income per capita. Global population growth has therefore over time become increasingly concentrated among the world's poorest countries, most of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. In these countries, sustained rapid population growth can thwart the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which remain the world's best pathway toward a happy and healthy future. Even though population growth magnifies the environmental impact of economic development, rising per capita incomes are the main driver of unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. The countries with the highest per capita consumption of material resources and emissions of greenhouse gas emissions tend to be those where income per capita is higher, not those where the population is growing rapidly. Meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise, while achieving the SDGs, critically depends on curbing unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, according to UN. Yet, slower population growth over many decades could help to mitigate the further accumulation of environmental damage in the second half of the current century. World population to hit 8 billion people today

New Delhi, July 11 (IANSlife) Family planning is central to gender equality and womens empowerment, and it is a key factor in reducing poverty. Millions of girls and women in India can transform their lives if needs for family planning - to delay, space and limit the number of children that women have - are met. Beyond health, there are many far-reaching, transformational and inter-generational effects of women being able to use contraception and take control of their fertility. At the household level, families are able to invest more of their scarce resources in the health and education of their children. Girls from smaller families are more likely to complete their education and women with fewer children are more able to seek employment, increasing household income and assets, points out Madhu Joshi, Sr. Advisor, Gender Equity and Governance, Centre for Catalyzing Change. Some progress has been made towards improving gender equity so that women have greater involvement in decision-making processes and positions in government. Increasing educational opportunities for girls protects them from premature marriage and childbearing and helps address gender inequalities in economic participation. Family planning empowers women to take charge of their lives whilst also enhancing their contributions to family wellbeing and overall national development, Joshi says. Efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on family planning access and service delivery. Measures have been taken to reach out with non-invasive methods to communities in conjunction with tracking and tracing of people who are at risk of COVID-19. She points out: "The estimates done by FRHS in the month of April 2020 presented three case scenarios based on timings of complete restoration of FP services. In the best case scenario with FP services restoration in the month of May 2020 in full capacity across the nation, it was estimated that as a result of the pandemic, 24.55 million couples would not be able to access contraceptives in 2020. Method wise the loss is estimated at 530,737 sterilizations, 709,088 Inter Uterine Contraceptive Devices (IUCDs), 509,360 doses Injectable contraceptives (IC), 20 million cycles of OCPs, 827,332 ECPs and 342.11 million condoms. "This is likely to result in an additional 1.94 million unintended pregnancies, 555,833 live births, 1.18 million abortions (including 681,883 unsafe abortions) and 1,425 maternal deaths. What is important is that we do not allow the pandemic to reverse the hard earned gains of past decade for increased family planning uptake." Adding: "It becomes imperative for all stakeholders to examine the opportunity loss as a result of COVID19 pandemic and put Family Planning back on track as we deal with the pandemic through strategic engagement; amongst the top priorities is to reach out to most vulnerable populations who may not be able to articulate latent need for contraception  mostly women dealing with loss of livelihoods, facing violence and discrimination; young couples who would not be able to access because of barriers of information and social pressure." We need to undertake concerted efforts to ensure that opportunity loss is reversed and couples who desire contraception can access it free from discrimination and with quality, and are to be able to reverse losses and ensure that decadal gains are not reversed. That multi-pronged efforts are being undertaken by government at all levels to bring FP service delivery on track. On World Population Day, Joshi recommends that "we reinforce, the need to keep listening to voices and support women and men in Choices they make for family planning". Community based distribution of non-invasive contraception be promoted through channels beyond frontline functionaries of the health system. Modifying delivery mechanisms along the lifecycle continuum of care for women and girls and including self-care across the spectrum of services offered, can increase access to care during calm times and crises. Bringing focus on spacing contraception which is non-invasive (condoms, daily and weekly pill) and minimally invasive (injectable) not just to promote choice also to reduce pressure on a burdened health system dealing with rising COVID19 numbers. World Population Day: Bringing back the 'choice, voice debate' on family planning during COVID-19

Today is World’s Population Day and everyone around the world is pouring their wisdom and intellect in how we can control population and what are the reasons behind the surge. 
 This <keyword id="203146" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Population-Day">World Population Day</keyword>’s theme is-‘Investing in Teenage Girls’, which is subject of grave concern. 
 
World over, teenage girls face a number of challenges such as early marriage and motherhood. Many teenage girls are forced to drop out of schools and are marginalised. 
 
To bring these challenges to zilch, UNFPA has been running a series of programmes that aim to end child marriage, curb adolescent pregnancy, and to empower girls to make informed choices about their health and lives. 
 
In 2015 alone, UNFPA programmes helped 11.2 million girls between ages 10 and 19 gain access to sexual and reproductive health services and information.

seems to know the real reason behind India’s population-control issues

Adequately spaced pregnancies can significantly improve maternal and <keyword id="22472928" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="child-health-outcomes" source="keywords">child health outcomes</keyword>, Union Minister Anupriya Patel said on Friday, underlining that this also reduces risks and empowers women to make informed choices about their <keyword id="20548742" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reproductive-health" source="keywords">reproductive health</keyword>. "The government's efforts have resulted in reduction of <keyword id="20741690" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maternal-mortality" source="keywords">maternal mortality</keyword> from over 130 to 97 per one lakh births," the minister of state for health said and also highlighted the efforts taken by states to involve men in <keyword id="19943279" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="family-planning" source="keywords">family planning</keyword>. Patel held a meeting with public health experts as part of a series of programmes to observe the World Population Day. The theme of the meeting was "Reaching the Last Mile for Ensuring Healthy Timing and Spacing between Pregnancies: Issues and Challenges." The minister said the government has always been conscious of these issues. "The launch of initiatives such as the <keyword id="22472929" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pradhan-Mantri-Surakshit-Matritva-Abhiyan" source="keywords">Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan</keyword> (PMSMA), extended PMSMA, identification of high-risk pregnancy in PMSMA, Anemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and the Post-Partum Family Planning Programme (Post-Partum IUCD and Post Abortion IUCD) are some examples of the government's commitment to the cause," she said. Patel also underscored the importance of an effective communication strategy. "The task of achieving Viksit Bharat (developed India) by 2047 cannot be done without empowering our women. Healthy timing and spacing between pregnancies are very important for women's health," she said. Additional Secretary and Mission Director NHM at the health ministry, Aradhana Patnaik, highlighted that India has already achieved a total fertility rate (TFR) of two with 31 states and Union territories achieving the replacement level. There is a need for an effective strategy to bring the TFR under replacement level in the remaining five states, the minister said. Patel said that "we would be able to reach the last mile" by empowering the youth, addressing challenges of equal participation of men and women, increasing couple communication, learning from best practices, taking cues from current and historical trends in family planning data and expanding the contraceptive basket of choices. She also stressed on identifying and mapping regions, districts, and blocks with data of issues such as low uptake of <keyword id="22472930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="family-planning-services" source="keywords">family planning services</keyword>, low demand for modern contraceptives and high unmet needs, and saturating them with services and enhanced social and behaviour change communication.

Uttar Pradesh's proposed new approach to managing its population <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/india/yogi-adityanath-releases-uttar-pradeshs-new-population-policy-for-2021-2030-9796391.html">will span the next decade</a>. Titled the <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/india/uttar-pradesh-govt-to-release-new-population-policy-for-2021-2030-today-9795811.html">"New Population Policy,"</a> the proposed <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/india/no-govt-job-no-subsidies-for-those-with-more-than-two-kids-says-up-govts-draft-population-control-law-9793891.html">measures</a> would reward those who stick to having two kids, and punish those who have more than two.Most drastically, Uttar Pradesh's <a href="https://www.livelaw.in/pdf_upload/up-population-control-bill-draft-396420.pdf">draft bill on population management</a> states that couples with two children who opt for voluntary sterilization would get incentives. If one member of the couple goes under the knife for voluntary sterilization, the family could get a range of benefits including tax rebates, subsidies for home purchases, and receiving cash back on their power and utility bills.At the same time, the proposed Uttar Pradesh policy regulations would bar those who have more than two children from receiving any government subsidies, applying for jobs in the local government, and running for political office in local elections, per the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/explained-what-is-uttar-pradeshs-population-draft-bill/articleshow/84318025.cms">Times of India</a>."Increasing population is the root of major problems including inequality prevailing in the society. The draft bill on population control in Uttar Pradesh is currently open for public consultation <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/up-law-panel-moots-proposals-to-promote-two-child-norm/article35251590.ece">until July 19</a>. From there, the bill will be <a href="https://accountabilityindia.in/blog/the-process-of-lawmaking-in-india/">moved to the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly to be read and debated</a> before it can be written into law. In <a href="https://www.census2011.co.in/census/state/assam.html">Assam</a>, where 36 million people live, the state's chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma <a href="https://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2021/jul/05/assam-to-form-sub-groups-to-contain-its-population-2325548.html">announced</a> on Sunday that a "population stabilization" roadmap will be developed by the state government. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry win $695 award from environmental charity for limiting family to 2 children

New Delhi, July 11 (IANSlife) Highlighting the need to focus on sexual and reproductive health rights of girls and women, a policy paper released by Population Foundation of India (PFI) recommends applying a gender lens - using gender disaggregated data and evidence - to our response to COVID-19 and "increasing investments in family planning as the most cost-effective public health measure". Coming on World Population Day on July 11, the recommendations includes investing in the 3.3 million female frontline health workers who are the face of the Indian public health system and in many parts of the country the only health-care support. Extra efforts are required to strengthen the public health system and increase health budgets to optimise service delivery and health facilities as well as maintain supply chains, the paper notes. Using social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) campaigns to spread information and awareness on COVID-19 and address myths and misconceptions, is another key recommendation. The paper assesses the differential impact of COVID-19 and recommending timely measures to ensure women and girls remain central to COVID-19 response planning and recovery efforts. According to Poonam Muttreja, Executive Director of PFI, "The COVID-19 crisis has placed unprecedented demands on our social services and health care system. Women are increasingly at greater risk of sexual and domestic violence, disruptions to their healthcare services, stock outs of supplies of contraceptives and menstrual hygiene products and mental stress and anxiety. It is critical that we reassess our emergency response policies through a gender lens to improve planning and programming." Evidence from past epidemics as well as the existing body of evidence around the impact of COVID-19 suggests that the disruption of essential health services, including family planning put women and girls at risk of decreased access to services as resources are diverted from routine health services including pre- and post-natal health care, family planning and contraceptive supply, menstrual health and other reproductive health services, PFI said. The limited availability of essential health services, including sexual and reproductive health services will be detrimental in the long run. According to estimates by UNICEF, India would have the highest number of forecast births, at 20 million, in the nine months period dating from when COVID-19 was first declared a pandemic. The Guttmacher institute has projected that a 10 percent decline in use of reversible contraceptive methods in low -and-middle-income countries due to reduced access would result in an additional 49 million women with an unmet need for modern contraceptives and an additional 15 million unintended pregnancies over the course of a year. The world population has reached 7.2 billion, according to data from the <a href="http://www.un.org/en/development/desa/population/publications/pdf/development/pde_wallchart_2013.pdf">United Nations</a>, which celebrates World Population Day today, July 11. The numbers rose from just 2.5 billion in 1950. 
But half of those 7.2 billion people live in only six countries: the United States, Brazil, Pakistan, India, China, and Indonesia, shown above on the map from the <a href="http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/07/11/half-the-worlds-population-live-in-just-6-countries/">Pew Research Center</a>.
China has the world's largest population - 1.36 billion people. Next comes India with 1.28 billion people. The U.S., Brazil, Pakistan, and India combined house about 702 million people.
The U.N. set the theme this year as "investing in young people." Today's 1.8 billion young people will continue to shape the social and economic status of countries. 
"On this World Population Day, I call on all with influence to prioritize youth in development plans, strengthen partnerships with youth-led organizations, and involve young people in all decisions that affect them.
